      @AdellAstare 9 лет назад +2

      Yes, Marjorie Barstow diluted and condensed the Alexander Technique into a weekend experience. It was nothing like the real thing. However, because it was so easy and instant, it became "The Alexander Technique" in the minds of people who had no clue what the real thing is.

    • @raythespian

      AdellAstare Are you aware of this article about Kitty? and her invention of the order "Eyes free to go apart"?...She gave it to me as "My eyes are free to go apart and see from the point of vision"...Then she always followed it with a second order, a most surprising one..."I am free to breathe through my ears"...and likened it to fish breathing through their gills...She said "eventually things open up"...and I think that now, decades later, things are beginning to open up...seeinganew.tripod.com/id7.html

    • @AdellAstare
      @AdellAstare 9 лет назад +3

      raythespian I appreciate the very interesting link. I hadn't heard of that order/direction before, and "eyes free to go apart produced a very benefical direction for me. I did work with Patrick Macdonald, one of the original members of Alexander's class, and for me, his work IS the Alexander Technique. Very precise yet full of heart.

    How does a back lengthen and widen? All this seems like complete nonsense. It’s so vague.

    • @opencurtin
      @opencurtin 6 лет назад +2

      Dreamlicker you think it the AT is about your mind giving your body directions without actually doing , if you think without actually doing that is the AT don’t do then you are not achieving mind body connection, forcing correct posture is doing , it’s not that complex really , after awhile of giving your body directions it will train itself naturally, a teacher is needed to help you with this .

    • @Andreazor
      @Andreazor 6 лет назад +4

      You're describing that's called muscle memory. To just do something without thinking about it because you're trained. This isn't doing anything. There is nothing changing. Nothing is happening. How the hell does a back even widen? Describe that for me, describe how a back physically widens and lengthens. This seems like a lot of New Age bullshit to me.

    • @opencurtin
      @opencurtin 6 лет назад +6

      Dreamlicker yes it is muscle memory you are right spine to lengthen shoulders to open up would be a better direction, hands on from the teacher helps with the directions and muscle memory ... it is vague at times to the beginner but a British government medical board did an extensive study on AT and found it very beneficial for back pain , I think their finding is on you tube it was done around 10 years ago ...
      the head is so heavy on the spine it pulls the whole spine down which causes the spine to compress , you see so many people who hunch young and old especially with smart phones these days , if you look at a child sitting it’s amazing to see how straight they are and how the head floats on top of the spine forward and up ,one of nature’s true wonders !

    • @joemissionary1454
      @joemissionary1454 6 лет назад +9

      Having done Alexander technique for 2 years I can see why this might be confusing. When she is talking about lengthening and widening she is referring to the fascia, not external muscles. The fascia is the inner most layer of muscle that does not respond to force or "doing". It's job is to simply keep us upright without effort. What happens though is through bad use we distort our fascia and end up using our external muscles to force what would otherwise be effortless movements. So the only way to release fascia is either through extreme deep tissue work or with habitual reconditioning. Alexander technique focuses on the habits.

    • @stephenhughes4166
      @stephenhughes4166 5 лет назад +19

      @@Andreazor she's getting him to stop tightening muscles he normally tightens. It sounds like new age bullshit because when you tell people just to let tension go, they don't. They try, but they can't feel where they're tightening the most because they do it too much. They're too used to it to notice. They actually end up tightening different muscles instead of letting the muscles in question go back to their normal length (and since some muscles go side to side: width). So you're hearing a bunch of verbal work-arounds designed to get him to actually stop tightening the muscles. Otherwise it backfires. To answer your first question, a back widens because a teacher helps you stop narrowing it. In one sense, you hit it on the head--nothing much is happening in the muscles. That's the whole point. For most people that's a HUGE change, because they're tense as shit all the time. GETTING it to the point where there's nothing much happening in the muscle other than resting muscle tone--without it backfiring--is the whole point.
