    Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we have a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the etrailer Class III two-inch hitch receiver. Now the Subaru Crosstrek is a very versatile vehicle. You can go a lot of places in 'em. The one issue with them is the back of the vehicle's not very large, so you're not gonna have a whole lot of room for storage especially if you're trying to get something like a bike to and from the trail head. It's gonna be very difficult and really messy if you're coming back from the trail to slide that bike in the back of your car.
    That's where a hitch receiver's gonna come into play. With this hitch, you're gonna be able to tow small trailers as long as you pair your hitch with some wiring, which we have on our website haul cargo baskets, you can put a bike rack on here just many different options. Having a hitch receiver on the back of your Crosstrek is gonna make it that much more versatile. This particular owner of this vehicle is using it to haul a four-bike rack to and from the trail because they just purchased this new vehicle and their old vehicle, they had a hitch on it already so they wanted a new one so they could do the same thing with their new Crosstrek. The weight capacities of this hitch are going to be 525 pounds of max tongue weight.
    That is the pressure put down on the inside of the receiver tube, which shouldn't be a problem because you're only gonna be able to pull lighter duty trailers. Cargo carriers typically will have a 500 pound weight capacity depending on which one you could pick up. As far as the gross trailer weight rating that it's rated to pull is going to be 3,500 pounds. That is the weight of the trailer plus the load included. So you want to be sure to check that before you hook up to your Crosstrek.
    You'll also want to check what's your Crosstrek, your year, make, model, and the submodel. That is very important. Be sure to check what it is ready to pull. And you want to go with the lowest component between the vehicle and the hitch. This hitch is gonna feature a 5/8 inch hitch pin hole, which is a standard for two-inch hitch receivers.
    It does not come with a pin and clip, but chances are if you pick up an accessory from us it will come with one. If it does not, we have several locking and non-locking hitch pins on our website. It'll also come with these loop style safety chain loops where it's gonna fit many different sides of safety chains. You can see here we can even fit two on there at the same time, more than large enough to be able to fit whatever style safety chain that you have. Now when it comes to ground clearance, we'll give you a couple measurements. We are at 14 inches of ground clearance. That is a good amount of ground clearance. Typically we recommend a rise in the shank of whatever accessory you have. If you have, if it's 12 inches, so be two inches higher, you should have no problems. Most accessories will have at least a two-inch rise. If you look into a converted inch and a quarter accessory that has a two inch adapter, those will typically have a higher, a higher raise in a shank. So you should be okay with whatever accessory you want to add. And as far as the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper, it's gonna be about flush with these fins which I really like, because when you're walking at the back of your car not many people walk this close to the back of the car. But if you were, the hitch is, you're not gonna have to worry about hitting your shin on the hitch or when you're loading stuff in and out of the back of the car. As long as you don't have an accessory, you should be fine. When it comes to the installation, this installation is not bad at all. I'd say the hardest part is probably drilling out an access hole. You'll have to remove two rubber plugs and then on the forward-most access hole that we're using, we'll have to drill it out in enough space to be able to run the hardware up through it, 'cause that's how we're gonna have to drop 'em down. But other than that, it's just lifting the hitch up into place. You don't have to lower any spare tire or the exhaust or anything like that. So with that being said, let's go ahead and show you how we did it. To begin our installation we'll need to be underneath our car and you'll see a couple of rubber plugs here. We're gonna need to remove the rearmost one and the forward-most one. It'll take a flat-head screwdriver or a trim panel tool like we've got here and you just wanna pry those ou

    Just installed on my 2024 Wilderness. I was able to do it by myself but was a bit of a challenge😂 - Helpful hint, on the driver’s side I enlarged the hole closest to the rear because the other one sit right above the exhaust pipe. You cannot get a drill in there. I used a floor jack to help balance the weight of the hitch while lining up the fish wired bolts. Threaded one bolt loosely on each side. After getting those two bolts threaded it’s a piece of cake.

      I noticed on instructions it say to put spacers on front holes. Now I don't have enough thread. I noticed in video he didn't put them in. Which is it?

    Hitch clearance should measured to the bottom of the hitch

    Is there a plan to design a hitch that is specific to the 3rd generation Crosstrek? Since this one is from 2nd generation, it doesn’t exactly sits flush with the bumper, which doesn’t look as clean as oem hitch.

    Thanks for the video. I find it odd that drilling the access hole is still required for the 2024 Crosstrek. The Outback not only has insertion receptors for the hitch arms into the frame, but also allows for a bumper cut out for more seamless integration.

    I just bought a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness and want the ability for 3500 tow capacity or a hitch rack if I’m not pulling a trailer.
    I’ve looked on Subaru for parts but I don’t see a Class III trailer hitch. Is this the specific part I need??
    I’m so new to car parts and I’m having a hard time finding the right things that I need to install to utilize the car fully!

    Is there a specific size of step bit required?

    • @etrailer

      You'll need to enlarge the hole to 1 inch diameter to get the spacer into the vehicle frame.

    I read that the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a max tongue capacity of 150lb. Would you still recommend putting up to 525lb on ?

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  14 дней назад

      No, I wouldn't. Even though the hitch has a higher tongue weight capacity, you'll still need to abide by the capacity of the vehicle if it's less than the capacity of the hitch. Having a hitch with a higher capacity than the vehicle isn't a unique situation. The hitch companies routinely build the hitches to be stronger than they need to be.

    Just got my hitch in the mail and before I get to installing I had a quick question. Do I need to put the extra spacer between the hitch and car in the rear opening same as in previous models (I have the 2024). I noticed in this video you do not put them in.

      According to the hitch manufacturer, some models of the Crosstrek have frame members that aren't perfectly flat. If your vehicle is like that, you'll use the spacers. If the mounting flange of the hitch sits perfectly flat against the frame members, the spacers aren't needed.

    Do i need to put outer spacers on front holes? My instructions said to do so, now i dont have enough threads on bolts

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  2 месяца назад

      The instructions state to use the spacers 'as necessary'. If the mounting flange of the hitch sits flat against the frame member, the spacers aren't needed. You will also want to make sure that the carriage bolt is correctly seated in the spacer that is fished up into the frame. Be sure that the square shoulder of the bolt is sitting in the square hole of the spacer. You might need to rotate the bolt slightly to get it to drop fully in place. Hope that helps!

      @etrailer Oh ok, I'll check to make sure bolts are seated all the way. As far as it seating flat on frame, it doesn't, there's a raised lip that makes it come up, so spacer is needed, but thanks for tip, I'll double check

      The linked install instructions state that the spacers are used 'as necessary'. They're not needed on all Crosstrek model years. Hope that helps!
