In this video I'm going over one of my favourite projects! A chainmail hackysack. This is a great gift for friends and a top seller at festivals! I made it from 16g 1/4" rings, and if you want to add some colour you can use some anodized aluminum as an accent.
Ha I had a friend of mine make me 2 chainmail hacky sacks back in 2005. They work great in cold weather where boots are necessary. I still have them. They get heavy on the feet after a few kicks. Lol

great idea for a hacky sack... back in high school my friends and i played hacky sack during lunch time and before soccer practice. we bought a 230+ hacky sack's because they would wear and tear, get kick on the roof, or school staff would confiscate them, most of the time it was wear and tear
uriel cano good times before school with gigantic hacky sac circles. This chain hacky sack might last longer but your shoes might not haha

I am just getting into chain mail, and this project was a fantastic first project for me
great instructional video however I would make the part where you stitch up the triangles at the end a little more clearer for those who have never worked with chainmaille before
how do you weave the triangles together?

When it comes to connecting the triangles, there a little bit of "Step one, draw two circles -- step two, draw the rest of the fucking owl" going on.

I would like to try that sometime. I am also looking for a way to make a hacky sack made out of paracord. I can't find any way to though. I go through hacky sacks like crazy. I play a lot! I need something that is good for palying and that will last me a while.

So watching this again with another video using colored rings the ball you made has no actual center ring but instead the center ring is the top ring of one of the triangles is what it now looks like to me. is that correct?
Is there a way to do this without staffing rags inside
Like solid chain in the center, or just hollow? Because I’m sure you could remove the rags before closing the top
I found this and made a bunch of balls but if i connect the triangles with the center ring i get a point and its not as flexible as yours looks. are you using SWG or AWG or maybe BWG? in my version I made just 1 alteration to make it more flexible with the triangles and it seems to work even if its a little different. I took about 30 balls with me to the 2019 Chain Link Up for other maillers to give them a look over and they said they looked excellent even if I prefer them a bit more firm if not filled with BB's instead of fabric.

I always wondered about this idea. Rust and broken chains here and there are the inevitable outcome. I'm considering an alternative as of late though.
It's held up decently - a few minutes to fix it here and there. Stainless steel would be a good material for durability.
you could rivet it, or just smolder the ends of rings together, which is easier, and you'll basically get a ball with a capabilities of an actual historical chainmail armor, capable of surviving sword blows, stabs, even hammer blows somewhat, and of course it will pretty much sustain any fall. And yeah, with stainless steel or something similar, rust won't be a problem either.

What exactly did you use to stuff the hacky sack?
Video was easy to follow along until the end. To fast and not close enough. Have no idea what you did to close up the bottom?

Yea. Try not to speed it up. It’s ok if a tutorial goes for 15 minutes. The triangles don’t make sense I’m stuck at 4/3/2/2. Not sure what’s happening since it’s sped up and pausing doesn’t help

I would have liked the video to be longer. Some things go way too fast. I had to re-do the pyramides a few times

How do I turn on the slow seen setting? I tried pauzing it about 1000 times but that didn't help.
I ended up creating my own way of closing the triangles since this was not gone over very well. It worked out, but I agree that the triangles were the trickiest part and closing them should have been gone over in detail.
How many links do I need?
The two that I have are different widths and do not have anything inside. Having material inside of them will make them super bouncy. Leaving them empty makes them work more like a dirt bag.
Then again, most people are watching this for chainmail practice, not new hacky sack ideas. 😆

I wanted to make this and take it to school because it's exactly what I'm looking for as a fidget toy and to make it more moldable I'll fill it with beads, but I realized teachers will see it as a weapon and people are gonna steal it and throw it-
Where did you get the rings
You can buy steel wire from an hardware store, a dowel and a pair of wire cutters for under $25, then tightly spin the wire around the dowel you got to the preferred circumference. After you've spun around your wire, you can slide off the complete spring and cut the end of it one by one with the wire cutters for thousands of rings!
i feel dumb I didn't even think of use in the pyramids for the top of my helmets

do you weld the rings?
No. If you weld them it can't move and will break.
I think he means whether or not the individual links themselves are welded closed, which is plenty logical and will increase the longevity.

Took me two days to figure out how to finish this because the end of the video is so hard to follow. You did no explaining other then "weave them like so" and did the worst job of showing how to do it. Your hands are shakey, blocking the shot, and you move the piece off camera. You do this part too fast and don't give a good view of what's happening.
Luckily I figured out my own way of finishing the piece.
