    Nicely done! Saw cut aluminum rings, quite the extravagance...
    Went to a Ren Fair about a month ago with my older two boys. A friend of my oldest son had made himself a long sleeve Hauberk (for LARP'ing) out of 1/4" diameter, 18ga machine cut aluminum rings (also from the Ring Lord). He's a welder by trade and he TIG spot welded every single ring shut! He said he'd been to too many LARPing events were people would have aluminum mail that was falling apart, so when he was making his Hauberk, he'd weave X number of rings, then TIG them all closed before he'd do more weaving.
    A crap ton of work, but in the end it was a light, great looking and relatively durable bit of kit. I did ask him why he didn't just buy one of those riveted aluminum shirts that are made in India or Pakistan and are sold all over the Internet. He replied that he just wanted the satisfaction of making his own, but mostly he wanted to be able to tailor it to his body. Being 6' 5" tall and a muscular build, I could see his point.
    Anyway... Nice job on your shirt. Lots of work for sure, I've only ever made a few coifs (one from split rings) and tailored a cheap butted steel ring shirt. Couldn't imagine doing an entire shirt.
    Great to see young people carrying on with this...

    My combat mail is made from steel, and it weighs out at 38lbs from 8 gauge wire. I love seeing stuff like this, i build combat armor, and its awesome to see others make armor. Even being aluminum, i could see this stopping an arrow, or a knife or sword tip. Maybe not for long, but it looks functional. Awesome work.

    A while ago I began experimenting with riveted flat ring chain mail and stumbled upon the problem with the armpits having zero mobility. It was only until after this video that I found out about the it cut into the armpit section and thanks to you I was able to modify my half hauberk to give me almost full mobility of the arms. Thanks for the video as it was extremely helpful.

    One question I do have for people is what they tend to wear underneath chainmail. Do you go with a gambeson of some sort or just a regular light shirt? And does that affect the sizing in a super noticeable way? Thanks!

    • @laurendoescosplay
      @laurendoescosplay  Год назад +1

      I'm not personally a fan of gambesons because I find them too bulky and hot so I usually just wear some sort of lightweight linen shirt or something. if you do plan on wearing a thicker layer you definitely need to size your shirt to whatever layer you wear underneath!

    Does the direction of the chainmail matter in terms of making it? I've been making mind with the more horizontal pattern in mind but yours is vertical. Is it just personal preference or is it better to do it in the longer "vertical" way yours is?

    • @laurendoescosplay
      @laurendoescosplay  8 месяцев назад

      it really depends on the project! the direction for the hauberk I would say is technically "correct" to have them hanging vertically on the body and horizontally on the arms. But I've done other projects and switched up the direction, so I think it comes down to personal preference and the look that you're trying to achieve :)

    • @laurendoescosplay
      @laurendoescosplay  4 дня назад

  • @seankrake4776
    @seankrake4776 Год назад

    Something you didn’t discuss in this video was expansions and contractions. It looks like you used them to tailor the midsection. These aren’t terribly difficult to use, and can make a really nice product.
    Also many people prefer to use sleeve that are oriented the other direction. This requires a 45 degree joint at the front and back.

      Hi! I haven't actually tried it yet (haven't gotten that far in the project) but studying 8:21 on the left side, it looks almost like they use 3-in-1s as opposed to 4-in-1s? The one corner of each unit is missing, creating that almost stair like pattern down. Maybe you build out the straps until you want to start the v-neck and creep inwards using that method? Just theorizing.
