Hey PassBack,
I live in Montréal, Canada, and I definitely felt that your video is excellent at conveying the distinct but similar cultures. Up here, my best friend and I play with and against many crusty French people. In fact, a regular activity we do every week is playing circle at Mont-Royal on Sundays, where this big social event called the Tam-Tams occurs once a week. My best friend and I incorporate a lot of freestyle footbag into circle play (within reason, without overdoing it or hogging too much) and I treat freestyle footbag similarly to how I treat skateboarding - tricks just spice up the circle and get people stoked. Doing solo freestyle reminds me a lot of one of my heroes, Rodney Mullen, so I really like doing it individually as you explained. We don’t know too many actual dedicated freestylers at high levels of skill unfortunately, but circle is exciting in itself. I also want to echo your statement that footbag is a very physical activity - besides skateboarding, a good day of playing is literally the best workout I’ve ever had. Anyone talking trash on that or the utility of the time spent can shut the hell up in my opinion.
Something however that was not covered in your video is footbag net. In Montréal, footbag net is taken VERY seriously - there are very dedicated players who mod their shoes and play it quite frequently every week in the spring, summer and fall. We also have mini footbag net, which is a lot smaller and much more intense and quick. My best friend is actually a known champion of both in Montréal, especially mini net, he wins contests a lot. There are tournaments in Montréal for both of those, usually run by this guy Yves who owns a company called Prokicker.
Anyways, all that to say - I really enjoyed this video, I think you really analyzed and presented the information clearly. Overall, an awesome addition for those who don’t know the difference. I’d be honoured to play circle with you some time if you ever come to Montréal! Rock on

Thank you for your kind words and your very thoughtful comment. Thank you for giving a brief introduction to Footbag Net, as we didn't have time to get into it in this video!
We had originally thought about briefly discussing other divisions of footbag, but ultimately decided to keep this video as a quick intro to freestyle footbag. The team at PassBack are all freestyle players, but personally I'm a fan of watching net, and I usually make a point to watch the final matches at every Worlds. I was actually in Montreal for Worlds 2013, so we may have brushed shoulders, but I haven't visited since; hopefully sometime soon!
Though we will mostly be focused on freestyle, we will definitely have a video to talk about net and other divisions at some point down the line.

I'm 43 and just bought a footbag to keep my reflexes and body healthy. I remember loving kicking the hacky sack in my teenage years in the early 90's. I'm very happy I found this channel. I'm looking forward to learning footbag and teaching my daughter to play as she grows. Thank you for creating this channel.

As a kid, I was naturally good at hacky sack, but needless to say, most people aren't. Which is why I'm glad you said "getting into a rhythm with the whole group." Because a typical hacky sack session with friends is roughly 3-5 kicks and.....boom. It hits the ground. But I swear, every once in a while something weird would happen. We'd be kicking it around like normal, when suddenly a weird calm would come over everyone. No words would be spoken and the hacky sack seemed to sail effortlessly from person to person. In this moment, it felt like you & your friends would NEVER drop it. I used to love that. However, eventually you'd all witness that sack full of beads hit the ground and just like that, the moment was over. Nothing left to do but toss it in the air and start again. Good times.
It's the bending down and picking it up for me every two to 3 kicks between the group for me 😂
I'm been quite prolific at freestyle football over the years and have recently picked up the footbag.
I love it. It's a simple, yet healthy sport activity to bring people in, not to mention physically challenging and socially addictive!
I use to play burns and keyhole load a bowl had circles of 40+ people it was dope back in the day use to play to keep stamina and reflexes up in conjunction with my regular workouts had a little fight club as a teenager it was pretty wild actually 🤣🤪🤘
During school lunch we used to play an elimination game called "kill", which was super fun! That was my gateway to freestyle, but I still enjoy some casual kicking =)
Maaannn I miss those Large Double Circles (two rings of people one smaller one larger around eachother) keeping anywhere from 2-4 Sacks going at the same time...those were the days! (1999-2003)
So cool I just recently got into the world of Footbag after playing “hacky sack” for awhile although I prefer circle play I found I progressed way beyond all my friends abilities to keep the ball up and now feel like playing alone is better for me to progress at freestyle tricks I’m glad you started this channel every video I watch is from 9 years ago and I was afraid the sport would die out before I had a chance to be good enough to play in competition keep up the videos man!

So weird because I've seen the circles but people doing tricks when its passed to them and then passing it on, almost like a dance circle. The two definitely meld together in a lot of ways.

My friends and I would play a hybrid form where we would take turns doing tricks but also aimed to keep it in the air and have everyone get a turn before it fell.
Sounds like a fun variation of circle kicking =)
Nothing against the other way but I just found it more fun to have a bit of a hybrid of the excitement of keeping it up with the person and doing tricks.

We kicked around the 2 types pictured here and a smaller version with pea sized beads inside and a thick weave. Durable and fun.
My friends and I started in 7th grade. Everyone had old school hacky sacks, some smaller and some giant about as large as a tomato. I realized hacks go off like a shotgun when you hit it aka could really go in any direction. So it can teach you more of a control aspect In my opinion. We're as a footbag has more control naturally, when it gets hit all the material inside will go in one direction for more of a flowed feel. I'm a footbag player now since after highschool. Also shoes have always been a big thing in my old group. I had moccasins and my friend who played everyday had Converse high tops. "You know the ones that kinda look like clown shoes" . He use to do this move, where he would stand one foot on the end of his other foot and pop it up easily pretty high. Lastly we played this game called "Sack" where if you dropped it in the circle or passed it bad or even flat out missed, you had to take five steps from the circle turn around so your back is facing everyone and the last guy to successfully hit the bag gets to wing it at who ever is out the circle and turned. Lol everyone got better needless to say
@@J.C... lol ya the old hacks haven't changed much. I started with a Sand Master, had sand or dirt fill. I highly recommend this one for trying to get back in it. It has good pop and is good for a group or solo. When you start to pick it back up I'd switch so something with a metal fill. I use a Kraken from pandemonium I think there called. It's mostly for solo play and on the heavier side, so I go from stall to stall instead of just striking it with my foot. Also The Bomb bags aren't so bad either, I kick one called the ultimate bomb it's not bad at all. However the guy who is in charge of the place is a huge tool.
Use to play the same thing except we called it burns because that shit would burn with some heat on it 🤣we also had a smoking game called keyhole loada bowl where when someone would key hole it between there legs they would have to take a full milky rip 🤣🙃🤘

What's the best footbag? Dirtbags? Or the crocheted footbags? I always used crocheted due to them standing up better than suede or another material.
From my experience on the video where I tried a bunch of branded bags, the best ones are probably Bomb or Dragonfly, but the Dirtbags were pretty good as well.
The best footbags you can get are made by professional stitchers, but those are a little more expensive and usually sold directly from the individual.

That is my shirt from the 2019 World Championships! I don't know if you can get this specific one anymore (you could try asking Wiktor D on Facebook), but usually every event has a special shirt that you can get :)
What is stalling?
Yupp really do have to have a great deal of stamina, always laughed to myself over people who never tried it before saying they could do it with ease and once they actually gave it a go they just sucked n couldn't even hit it twice, some never tried again n some went on to being pretty damn good after realizing that it takes a lot of grace, stamina, creativity and over all focus to keep it going either by urself or in a large circle.

Thanks! Sounds like a game I used to play called "Kill"? It was a last man standing/elimination kind of game where you had to hit someone with the hack, then they had to save it before it hit the ground.

But I play hacky sack by myself. I don't think the social part is the key differentiator between the 2. One is about keeping it in the air and the other is more about creative stalls.

It's a very good point, and one that I realized (and was kicking myself for) after we published the video.
In retrospect, I wish I would have explained the difference between solo hacky sack and freestyle footbag (keeping the bag in the air vs. doing tricks) and *then* drilled down to the difference in group play (collectively keeping the bag in the air vs. taking turns doing tricks).
Yea its all good. I'm more old-school. I like keeping it in the air and throwing a few jesters in the chain. I'll try footbagging but i find stalls are also largely influenced by shoe type. It's cool but me is old skool :)

Takraw is similar to footbag net, both are very cool! A couple major footbag events have hosted takraw events, and a couple of players play both. We'll talk about footbag net at some point, but we're all freestylers on this channel, so that's our focus.

Im kinda sure hacksack is just the name of a game you play with a footbag. Its a foot bag regardless if it's made of fo swade, stich, or yarn.. its a foot bag... and if you aint freestyle you might just be playing hackysack with a footbag.
So like frisbee is like ultimate?
I think that's probably a good analogy. I'm not in the Ultimate community, so I don't really know the culture, but from the outside, it seems similar enough: brand name for the more well-known and casual activity, and a generic name for the more niche and serious activity.
@@PassBack a lot of people call it frisbee because of the brand name I just figured out that it really is just called disc wich is crazy to think because nobody calls it that.

5:24 wow, no stoner comments? shocked. that's what always got associated to hacky sack in my area. but the colorful balls always looked so cool and i was impressed with the skill. i tried a time or two but the ball just flew away. (i didn't own it, just messed with it real quick.) they might have been over-stuffed.
I'd have to rewatch to remind myself of what I said, but I probably wanted to avoid talking about drugs at all. Weed is also so much more normalized now than it was 20 years ago (when hacky sack was much more common) so I don't even know if it's a relevant comment anymore.
I just started practicing footbag this past week. It's interesting that whamo owns the generic trademark frisbee as well. I am an ultimate frisbee player so the stereotyping of the skills is also similar. The elitist mentality can be seen in competitive ultimate, turning off some new players.

I've noticed what you described in footbag as well; established players can sometimes be a little overzealous when it comes to newcomers, which can turn them off. Something to discuss more in another video, but for now, enjoy the journey, and let us know if we can help with anything!

Sure, that's an ok 1-sentence summary! It goes a bit deeper with cultural differences and how the two are played, but I've used similar descriptions in the past when people have asked me the difference.

I have kicked a bag for 25 years and just now discovered this "sport" but honestly it's a dance where is the game aspect? I guess if your a severe introvert hungry for validation this could seem fun but honestly your the opposite of hackysack players.
As we discussed in this video, while hacky sack and freestyle footbag are related, they are quite distinct and have very different "goals;" freestyle footbag players are not trying to be hacky sack players, and vice versa, so I'm not sure the points you're trying to make by saying that we "took the spirit of hacky sack and killed it" or that we're the "opposite of hacky sack players." Freestyle footbag is not for everyone, and you're certainly allowed to not enjoy it, but to boil it down to "if your a severe introvert hungry for validation this could seem fun" is a pretty misguided view. Circle play in freestyle footbag *is* very cooperative and fun, but expressed in a different way than circle play in hacky sack (which we'll talk about in more detail in the future).
I share your view entirely. Hacky Sack was killed by some individualistic "players" here in Switzerland. The spirit or the team kicking the bag together has completely disappeared. But maybe the real reason why it got killed is the fact that the team spirit in sports has decreased because some pretended it to be communistic and didnt support it anymore. In society today, every attempt of bringing people together in order to share something is either called pathetic or communistic

I think when I was a teenager I would've thought more along these lines, but as an older person (ie: 30), I don't see much point in being so strict with a definition. To me, if something is athletic and takes skill or practice, then it's sport enough for me, and the rest is just details.

The concept existed in history and other cultures prior to Hacky Sack's conception in the US. John Stallberger and Mike Marshall called what they were doing "hack the sack," which they later trademarked as "hacky sack" and sold to Wham-O.

Absolutely no ill-intent or insult intended, but every-time that you mention foot-bag being similar to skateboarding it makes my eye twitch. Outside of the comparison regarding they both involve one person and doing tricks there’s absolutely nothing in common. In my opinion the most truthful answer if looking for another sport comparable to foot-bag is people that Yo-yo competitively. Again no offense but I’ve never sprained my ankle foot-bagging over a 10stair gap or arrested for foot-bagging in a public area ya know?
Hey, none taken, and appreciate the comment. This was an early video on the channel, and if I were to remake it/make a similar video in the future, I'd definitely phrase things differently & make different comparisons. Sometimes things make sense at the time, but in a few months you wish you could go back and rewrite them!
While I do think that footbag and skateboarding have more in common than just those surface-level aspects (like culture and mindset kind of things), it probably isn't obvious unless you're really into footbag, which makes it a not great comparison. I know plenty of footbag players who do/used to skate, or people from a primarily skate background say that footbag culture reminds them of skate culture, so I do think there is *something* there. But again, if it needs this much explanation, and it only makes sense to people already in the culture, it's not really worth putting in the video :)
And yeah, I wouldn't call footbag a "dangerous" sport in any way, and I can't say I know any footbag players who've been arrested for playing in public. We do sprain tons of ankles though ;) There is also a sub-category of the sport where people do tricks with obstacles like stairs and ledges (last combo here: ruclips.net/video/F_dH4Ra6O3k/видео.html), but definitely not taking regular slams.

When I was in high school my coach of my weight lifting team literally he also coach baseball and soccer you said we could do anything for cardio and I wanted to do foot bag he proceeds to tell me how I'm wasting my life kicking a ball I'm like buddy you're a coach for soccer team it's all you guys do is kick balls I don't need to hear it

I literally picked this up to keep my legs strong and stable for skateboarding… Im 31 and haven’t been on a board seriously since elementary/early middle school… And let me tell you the skateboarding/longboarding comparison was horrible!!! Most skaters do not respect longboarders it is not the same at all lmao you obviously don’t know anything about the skating scene but do some research before you use a reference like that again lmao
The longboard/skateboard comparison was primarily about two well-known activities that are related but distinct (similar objects, similar basic use of the body, but very different expressions + goals). I still think it's a fine comparison, but you tell me if you think otherwise.
The specific part that you're referring to I admittedly could've made clearer, but I was thinking more about public perception of the two rather than one culture's opinion of the other.
I've encountered countless people over the years who, after I give them the brief version of this video, will try to tell me that I'm wrong, that I'm really playing hacky sack, and basically outright reject the concept that there's a separate sport of footbag; it has to be "all hacky sack and nothing else" in their mind.
Of the friends I've had that either longboard or skateboard (and the brief time that I skateboarded), I've never heard of something like that happening to them (where a passerby will try to tell them that they're not really doing what they think they're doing) but tell me if I've misconceived that idea.
Either way, thanks for the criticism; the fact that anyone is paying attention enough to have a criticism like yours I take as a positive. And yes, footbag is excellent exercise, we'll talk about that more in depth in a future video.

I believe it; definitely some of that animosity between cultures in our sport as well. The wording was ambiguous for sure, I'm always trying to find the balance between succinct and too-wordy, and it looks like I leaned too hard on succinct in this case.

Maybe back in the 80s the difference was closer to naming, but currently there is a big enough difference in culture & playstyle that the coke/soda metaphor doesn't really apply.
I've never used a drink comparison before, but off the top of my head, it's closer to something like hot coffee and iced coffee; both are coffee, and obviously related, but they have different appeals and audiences. You might like both, but if you order a hot coffee and get an iced coffee, you'd be pretty confused!

the comparison to skateboarding is offensive to skateboarders; i suggest you compare it to rollerblading going forward (Bladers, being at the bottom of the totem pole, are much less likely to take offense).

Frisbee Golf and Disc Golf have a similar problem. Cheers to wham-o for popularizing sports equipment disguised as toys, and people like you who legitimize the sport.
