I hope you do a follow up on this project after the leather starts to burnish and show it’s true beauty.

I used upholstery leather and trimmed the leather just shy of wide enough to wrap all the way around. When I stitched, I pulled tight to nearly close the gap. The thinner leather stretched and hugged every contour of the steering wheel.
Also, on the places you can't stitch because of the steering column pillars, go ahead and add stitching on the show side. Gives a more finished look in my opinion.
Been on steering wheel for 7-8 years, and starting to show wear. I like your method of the french seam. I just overlapped mine, and never liked the look of it.

I would like to do this on my car. I’m also a leather crafter. You should do a follow up on how it looks now!

Beautiful work! Really adds a lot to the wheel. I love how you seamed both ends to make the loop, very neat. Most steering wheel wraps are black leather, but I much prefer this tanned look. 👍 I imagine it will darken a little with use.

After a couple months of use, it has darkened substantially. It's fun to watch the leather change with use

Burning the ends of the thread is super weak and will be the first place where the cover starts coming apart especially after the grunt struggle Walmart parking lot maneuvers. The best way to secure the end of a stitch thread is to simply tie a multiple not & should last even the said Walmart maneuver.

I can’t wait for this Mississippi summer to end-I’m gonna do this to my car!

Never seen that type of knife used to skive. But it worked. Nice.

Hey, Im actually looking to do this.
whats the difference of doing a baseball stitch or doing a stich where you have thread already going through the holes that you would tie together, like a diamond stitch.
and would you be manually putting this thread in ( the thread that would line the holes), or could you do that with a sewing machine?

I used to wrap dashboards and gear shifters with leather. Your process looks barbaric, but in a good way. I like the rustic look.

Thanks, it like 5-6 oz veg tan, so it’s a little thick for this application. But it feels great in the hand

I would treat the leather with Neets Foot oil too protect it.

How much stitching material should I order for a similar size wheel?

I use Maine Thread Company. I’d just get one of their braided waxed spools for $11. I think you’ll only use 6 ft or so for this project but then you’ll have plenty left for more leather projects!

About to do this to my 07 prius I just bought. The 14 inch steering wheel is a joke to find one for. Thanks!

Obnoxious color cover tan ? Could have went with the better & more eye appealing color and that is the super generic one color interior blk. Especially on a thing like this the appliance car or wait that's another Japanese car that makes appliances with wheels which I'm definitely not saying here I'm not giving them any free advertising but they used to make a super neat car called the mrtwo. Meaning mid rear engine run about.

Definitely the super wrong super amateur way of measuring a cercumfrence of a confirmed loose nut behind the wheel, The only properly universally known method of measuring said width of said wheel is simply measuring across the thing and that's the width, the other measurement is the thickness of the thing & that's stupidly easy to simply wrap a string & take a measurement usually for car's like this 4 to 4 & and half thickness and 15 inch across.
