When I was in the US Army SF, before going to VN, I made a sheath combat knife to take with me. I did not use a file for the blade, but went to a machine shop supply house and bought a piece of 1% carbon tool steel and shaped it, including hollow grinding the cutting edges... I also used stacked leather for the handle, but used brass for the guard and the hilt. Worked great and I carried it daily for my 16-1/2 month tour over there. I need to do a little restoration of the leather as it has shrunk a bit. I still have it, but keep it in my safe. I will pass it down to my heirs eventually.
@@wyomingwright I like the aluminum look for this utility knife. The pommel reminds me of my PAL 36, with the exception that the pommel on the 36 is not threaded. It is pined perpendicular to handle the all the way through capturing the stick tang Thank for the video, nice knife.
That's a beautiful result. It's amazing how much the style of knife can change just by making a different handle. I also got myself that model of blade. But used a nicely seasoned piece of cherry wood. And made the handle more nordic. No metal, so it's not unpleasant to hold in the winter. It's fascinating to see how yours looks more like a hunting knife with that short handle.
Fun video and of course we want to watch the sheath under construction. Did the same thing about 14 years ago but after a one summer I redid it got rid of the aluminum, replaced it with some stainless scrap from the shop. Just got tired of having gray hands and fingers. and gray all over everything including gloves .
I'm going to give it a go my self, I have made a few knifes in the past but lost the passion for it but after seeing this you have inspired me to give it a go. Cheers n thanks good job btw looks great
Nice modification of the Mora, I really like the stacked leather look. I bought an inexpensive old WW II era PAL knife on EBay with rotted leather. Took it with me to a knife grind in and restaked the leather, sanded and polished the blade. Came out better than I could have imagined. I’m going to another grind in this coming June and want to do something similar except that I’m going to grind down the stacked leather about a 1/16” below the guard and the pommel edges and then do an 8 strand braid with brown and brandy toned leather strips. Enjoying your videos. Donald.
Thanks for doing this! I'd assume a traditional Mora would have a stacked birch handle, but stacked leather has been my favorite since I was a kid many many years ago. GOOD JOB!!
Next time you do a stacked leather handle, cut your pieces, punch the holes and then soak them in water. Then get a long 1/4-20 carriage bolt with some large fender washers. Put a washer on the bolt then place all the pieces on the bolt. Then place the second washer and nut on the bolt and tighten as hard as you can (water will start to seep out). Sit the stack somewhere warm and dry for a few days. Youll need to keep tightening the bolt periodically. Then use as normal. By wetting, compressing and drying you lessen the chance the leather washers will shrink and seperate down the road
@wyomingwright and when get to your final finish grits, start sanding in one direction only. You can do the "shoe-shine" method just only to the left or right. I usually go up to 400grit, that'll leave a beautiful burnish. Then you can dye if you want. I usually seal mine by melting in same wax mix (50/50 beeswax and parafin) I use on my leather edges.
Very nice. In restoration of vintage Estwing tools, I've always wanted to do a stacked leather gripped knife. Maybe ill come across an old one that needs TLC .
My thought for finishing the leather handle would be, instead of wax, use thin CA glue, let it soak into the leather to properly protect it from the elements and then fine sand it to a nice finish. But, regardless of that, this was an awesome build!
I like the overall idea. This is my first time seeing this configuration on a Mora & it does not disappoint. It appears to be s tad blocky from what I can see.
It could be a little longer. I think that’s what you’re seeing. It feels really good in the hand. It’s sort of a hybrid between a traditional puukko handle and a more modern coke bottle shape.
Great job! It looks great and has inspired me to make one myself. One question, when stacking the leather pieces, did you keep the smooth side facing in the same direction for each one or did you alternate their orientation 1,3,5....2,4,6...?
I kept them facing flesh side toward the guard. That way I knew I’d be twisting the pommel against the smooth side and I had less resistance while tightening it down really tight.
Yes I should have put a little more work into the gaurd. Gaurd fit-up is by far the most tedious part of through-tang knife construction, but also probably the most important. I will do better on the next one!
Your leather soaked up the aluminum dust That’s why you got the gray color you got Took me a lot of stacked leather handles to get the hang of it But, I enjoyed the video and a you did a great job! Two Thumbs up!
A stacked leather washer handle is so classic cool. Has eye appeal whether it's on a knife or hatchet. It one of those things that just seems good and proper.
It's a very nice-looking handle, but the blade/ricasso to guard fit up could have been a whole lot better. A bit of extra filing could have seated it a bit better.
Yep. I kinda reached a point where I had exceeded my margins on the side and I didn’t quit have the tools to get the precision on the ends of the slot without making it worse on the sides. I’ll do better next time.
Стою ты больстер не подогнал , чтобы клинок чуть в него входил? Это же явное ослабление конструкции ножа , при нагрузке лезвие сломается в месте перехода его в концевик. Жаль будет потерять такой красивый нож из за такой мелочи.
While the stacked leather is nice...a Scandinavian versions are made using stacked birch bark. But you probably knew this. This is a nice video. Keep on keeping on.
Ah, it makes sense. Truly, you did a beautiful job. Keep it up. It wasn't until after my post that I realized that I like leather on different shaped blades, but I like the lighter shade of the paper birch on mora blades. Also, I like horn on some blades and wood on others. It was enlightening to realize what I was doing subconsciously. I apologize. I do like your work. And I repeat...Keep on keeping on. All the best
What was the tool you used at 6:30 ? Brand or link would be appreciated! I have my Dad's stacked leather knife from way back. He was in the military in the 50's.
That turned out great! It is a lovely feeling handle. I actually just made the same kind of handle for another type of knife. Very satisfiying. I liked the music at the end, was that an actual language?
It's probably Mongol or some other Turkic language. The type of vibrating throat chant you hear is typical of Mongolia, Northern China, Tibet and Southern Russia (I wouldn't be surprised if it's common also in one of the various X-tan countries too). You may want to check The Hu, Hanggai, some dude called Vazorig Vanchig or something like that and (if you're more into metal) Tengger Cavalry, which is how I learned about this type of music, lol. P.S: that pukko-ed Mora ended up looking awesome!
Love drilling and aiming for the hand holding the tiny aluminum part with ruff cornes. What could possibly go wrong? Almost thumbs down 👎 But nice handle building Thanks
Great job,but that only improves the looks. Moras already come with the best handles I had on any knife! They are super gripy suler comfortable and their ergos work better for bushcraft tasks, compared to any knife Ive tried!. I prefer the handles if my Bushcraft Black or Robust,to any 400,500$ knife I own. They just work better.
Knives and sharpening is kind of like politics and religion, but for those who know, a wise man from mississippi once said " the best way to do things, is the way you like to do it" stick with what works Dave
Very beatiful knife, thanks for the watch. Also love the Altai music.

Good job on the knife.
And the music was cool too
Just a beautiful piece! Artful synergy between form and function. A+!
*I will make it for my workshop* 👍👌
Your throat singing voice is amazing wow!
This is a work of art. Thanks for the inspiration. Diving into one of these soon.
Great music!
Beautiful job. I've always been partial to stacked leather handles. Well done, cowboy.
Thank you very much!
Hello my Friend, very well done 😊 the Morakniv Factory should see this Impressing Video ...all the best greetings from Germany ,stay Calm . Klaus

Well done. Beautiful knife and great video.
Nicely done! I like the way you shaped the handle. Not big on the background noise/music!😂
Great modification! I´d love to have my tools to mod some of my Moras... Thanks for sharing.
Nice project and the knife turned out great. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice, well done!!! This inspired me to redo the handle on my Mora.
I like the Clipper/Companion handle shape you chose.
Very nice, and made with fairly basic tools.
For the rest of us, you can buy pre cut leather washers for handle making from most knife making supply shops for a inexpensive price.

Can't beat stacked leather? 🤔 Stacked birch bark will give you a run for your money, though.
Also, its easier to collect, because birch doesn't run!
True enough. Although, if it doesn’t run, how can it give me a run for my money? 🙂
1:35 You have the grinder guard removed & it is being used upside down, throwing bits of metal upwards towards the user. I'm out.'
