New to soap making? This is important!
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Suleman Anwer yes I have and now that’s all me and my family use!! It super fun and amazing!!! Now I’m gardening and trying to grow my own food!!
That sounds like a lot of fun too! I think I'm going to go shop for supplies this week!
Patricia Kinney Me too Patricia. I Started last year with the gardening. I do the no dig, deep mulch, permaculture methods. On the soap making; I am now reviewing my books, and rewatching all of Elly’s wonderful videos and assembling my tools and materials and am going to start with the soap making. I have always loved soap so I am afraid this will be a new obsession. lol. Song
Elly, Thank you so much for all of your soap making tutorials! My wife and I have always wanted to make soap. Your videos made it look so easy we gave it a try. Our first batch was very slow to trace but turned out perfect! We just made another batch yesterday. That batch was also very slow to trace but also turned out perfect as well. We added ground oatmeal and it stayed perfectly suspended in the soap. Our first batch is six weeks old and it is wonderful!! It lathers up really nice and is very luxurious! We're sold on making our own soap, thanks to you!
That's wonderful Rick! Thanks for such great feedback!
Rick, which recipe did you and your wife make that lathered really well? I have been wanting to make soap for some time, so I just bought my equipment and I want to get started. I too want to add dry ingredients for texture.
Your very knowledgeable and have a calming way of teaching. Thank you. Hope I can make some soap in the near future.
Thank you, I have no doubt that you can :)
Hey Elly I have decided to call today 'My Elly Day' just taken my first sour dough loaf out of the oven ... wow hurry up and cool. First Elly Starter, First complete sour dough loaf. Having a coffee before I go to the shed and make my First Elly Day Beginner Soap. Thank you so much for making a difference in my life and I'm sure many, many others. Debs from WA
Wow Debs! Oh my, you made my day 🤗
Thank you so much for this video. I've watched several but you are the first person to go over everything so thoroughly before making the soap. After watching this I'm ready to get the equipment and make my first batch of soap, safely! Thank you again. Kathy.
Thank you Katherine, I'm glad you found it helpful. I have a beginner soap recipe video too if you're interested (see below). I also have a video that shows how to formulate and calculate your own soap recipes which you might be interested once you get going with it all. Best of luck!

🛑 IMPORTANT: This video is intended for general information purposes only. It is not a comprehensive video on lye safety (I'm doing one of those asap!). Sodium hydroxide (and other lye types) in granular form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling. As a hobby soap maker, you are responsible for the safety of yourself and others around you when you make soap.
Please watch this excellent lye safety video from Royalty Soaps before you proceed with making your own soap!

Thank you Elly, I'm looking forward to the next instalment. You have an uncommon talent for demystifying daunting subjects. :-)
Oh thank you. That's one of the best compliments I've received :)
Thank you, thank you thank you! Taking a class tomorrow, but the knowledge and practical instruction is great! Much appreciated.
You're welcome! Enjoy the class.
The cat knocking LOL that was funny - Im going to make my own soap soon!
Oh yes! I forgot about that little moment :)
Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks, Elly
Thanks Michael, I hope to get it done asap! I'll be filming tomorrow and hopefully not too long in editing.
I love this video! It is so much better of an introduction than the generic "you start by buying soap" videos. Thank you for this one!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
I really consider that using so much safety equipment for ingredients to eventually apply finished product on skin.
Hello from No. California, Elly! You are a great teacher and I have been enjoying your videos. I just took out my very first loaf of sour dough bread from the oven. I followed your videos from making the starter through to baking the bread and the loaf came out far exceeding my expectations. I am looking
forward to your soap making series. Thanks for sharing your brain!
Thank you Marsha, that's great news! Congratulations on your first loaf of sourdough, I'm sure it will be the first of many :)
Thank you also for your kind words. I hope to have my beginner soap recipe video up soon. I hope you enjoy it! My videos are a bit long but I like to take all of the guess work out of it for people. Thanks again, Elly
What a great video...thanks, I'm new but watching lots of different people making soap...it's nice to get so many ideas.
Thank you so much for this video you make everything so simple and easy.
Thank you! Probably won’t make soap but I found your videos so calming and I just love listening to you talk :) (came for the sourdoughs). Your explanations are great and clear, and I know if I am to pick up soap making (I use bar soaps already so this is great) I’ll have no problem with your videos!
Thank you Cynthia, that's great feedback. I really appreciate it :)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
i wanted to make my own soap and you cleared every thing about basic things needed for soap making in detail . 👏👏👏👏👏

So nice of you, thank you.
Learning so much from your videos. Excellent explanations.
Great video very detailed and informative. Love the cat part too!!
Thank you Elly, for sharing your knowlede.
Thank you, you're most welcome.
Hi Elly,
I am getting more confident with making soap and sourdough!!
** many thanks to you!!
I am planning on my next batch of soap to measure out my water in a canning jar,...tare, then spoon straight from the container of NaOH with a dry plastic spoon then stir.
This seems to me that will be safe enough and reduce the chance for trace NaOH to sprinkle around and stick into a separate container.
Loving my new hobbies!!
~~thank you again for all you share!!!
Thank you Connie, I'm so glad you're enjoying my channel and feeling confident with everything! You can absolutely add your lye directly to the water, but I've never chanced it. I am really flexible with sourdough baking, but completely opposite with soap! I prefer to be absolutely sure I've got the exact amount before I add it to the water. I'm a bit fussy about it though, you do what works for you :)
Thankyou Elly,am blessed to watch and learn all alot about soap from you and your videos
Thank you Scovia! I'm pleased they are helpful for you.
Yay! Another video! Thanks!

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I may contact you in the future with questions.
No problem.
I didn't want you to stop ❤❤❤❤ anyway thank you for sharing dear... hoping to learn more from you❤❤
Thank you so much. That was really informative and very likable down to earth. I will start tomorrow with your Castile Soap recipe made with olive oil. Lots of greetings from Germany.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Good luck with your castile soap.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you again! Your good luck wishes worked very well. My Castile soap is a little more greenish and not as white as yours, supposedly because of my darker and not so light olive oil. Maybe thats why, when i put the soap out of the mold it seemed more wet than in your video after 48 hours. Do you think the difference of the olive oil may be the reason for that, because i was very precise with the grams? It was still hard enough though and i believe in the next weeks it will get harder and harder. I´m looking forward to see more videos of yours. I think you are a splendid teacher!
Thanks a lot for this very useful class.
So nice of you
Thank you for this!!
you're welcome!
Soap making is so satisfying. I made the most lovely soap from a mistake. I had to mill it an rework it but is just lovely. I made a lot, took me years to use it all!
I completely agree Carole! Handmade soap is the best. I seem to love it more and more as the years go on :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thanks for your reply! I was wondering if that turmeric soap stains counter tops? Once I spilled some turmeric on a night gown and never got that stain out. Watching you made me think soaps would be a nice Christmas gift for a few people on my list. My Grannie, who passed in ‘82 made soap the traditional way, saving her fats from cooking until she had enough. When I was about 10-12 she showed me how she made it. I remember her saying you stir the lye and water until “it is as hot as a three dollar bill”, it was a funny comment, and out of the ordinary for her. Lol I had to ask my mom what it meant. Many years later my Grandma told of her soap making business when she was young. People would bring their fat after having an animal processed, and she and her mother would render down the fat, then make soap and return it to the customer. We have it pretty easy! I haven’t made any in a long time, but I think I might make a batch with my dad when I go see him next. He loves homemade soap. And what is not to love?
Such wonderful memories, and a great story there Carole, thank you! As far as I know tumeric in soap doesn't stain anything - I've used it in soap without issue :)
Happy soap making with your Dad, how special for you both xx
Ugh such a helpful video ty :)
Thank you.
I like your tutorings,
Everything u do is clear.
I would like to know whether I can get started with making soap from home as a business too
Thank you. Yes, you can easily make soap from home and sell your soaps as a small business. Some countries have regulations about selling soap, but you would need to check that where you live.
Thank You Very Much Mam,
I'm really looking forward to making Soap... I appreciate 🙏🏾 much Love from Nigeria 🇳🇬 😘😘
Thank you! Nice to hear from you.
Thank you luv your videos
So here I am, a 60 year old man who has always gotten bath soap by looking for the brand labeled "soap". Then I happened to buy some plain home made coconut soap at a farmer's stand while on vacation and wow, I never knew how clean I could feel when there's no goo, oils, scents, herbs or vegetables added. Can't go back to that stand. Then tried some so called pure soap brands that really aren't and are mostly air, and your vids have got me ready to make my own now! Hopefully, the neighbors won't have to call in FEMA, ha.
That's great! I'm very happy to hear your story! All the best with it. I'm sure you'll find it very satisfying :)
Your great 🤗cant wait to get started ..thanks
Oh thank you, I appreciate your feedback! Glad you enjoyed it :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I've watched almost all of them😂🤯😎
Thank you ☺️🙏
Nice information, Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so very much for the crafters choice tip! I am happy now. Let me know if you can get the soap out eaisier please.Thank you.
Thanks Connie, you're welcome. Yes, those moulds get A LOT easier after a few uses. My soap pops out easily now, thank god!
Your way to explain thing is just wonderful you inspire me to start my own business. I hope that i will. Please excuse my English i making my first steps in it .good luck for you and thank you for all the video
You're very welcome! Thank you for your feedback. Best of luck with your soap business.
love this! east video ever.
Thank you!
very useful
thank you
You are welcome
Hi Elly, thank you for making this video. Haven't made my first batch yet but hopefully today!
Question. I have a porcelain kitchen sink, is it safe to clean up my utensil s and stuff in the sink?
Hello, and thank you! To be honest, I'm not sure how to advise you regarding your sink. I would like to think that it's pretty tough, given it's purpose after all, but it might be a good idea to do a bit more further research. One way to reduce any risk would be to leave your soapy utensils and bowl/bucket for a day until the remaining batter turns to soap, that way it won't be caustic, won't do any harm and you will have plenty of suds to wash up with! Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer.
Elly, I love your videos! I've spent the whole week watching them and getting very excited to try soap making. You had mentioned that you need to use stainless steel bowls to mix ingredients and not aluminum ones, but can you use a loaf-size mold made of aluminum? Also, are there any materials that you can reuse for regular food after using them for making soap (e.g., stick mixer, bowls, rubber spatulas, etc.)? If they can be reused for mixing food afterwards, then this would cut down on the cost of all the soap making supplies needed to get started just in case a person doesn't want to do it anymore. Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all you do to help us newbies!
Hi Sondra, great questions, yes you can reuse a lot of things for soap making as long as they're cleaned properly. I discuss this in this video if you'd like to learn more about it ruclips.net/video/VkgUjjqa-8s/видео.html
Also you can use any kind of material for a soap mould, but anything made of timber or metal would need to be lined first. This video shows a good method to do that: ruclips.net/video/7vU68RqnFEI/видео.html
Thanks just watched, would like to see the 🐈. Very informative. I will subscribe as only just started making soap but only with melt and pour. And seeing what I like best. Which I find is a good way to start. Looks like I'm going to busy watching your videos. Thanks from Shropshire in UK.
Thanks so much Aliki, I like your approach, I'm the same. Lots of research is important for soap making. My cat makes brief appearances in some of my other videos :)
Hello Elly, i'm really glad i found you! You really motivated me to just try and do it even with the scary parts (caustic soada)!
My Big question is, could you do a shampoo bar tutorial? Thank you for the Videos! Greetings from switzerland
Hi Manon, yes I did one a while back, but the method is a bit unusual. You can find that one here ruclips.net/video/Bh92IqTDfAA/видео.html
After making the soap and the video, I think my preferred method to make it is cold process. Check it out and see what you think :)
Brilliant video. Love that the cat needed to come in! haha! Will sit and watch your next one now :)
Cant seem to find your facebook page though xx

Thanks Ellie!
The best explanation on soap making I have encountered.
You shared knowledge freely. I love your calm persona. Thank you.
#newsubscriber
Thank you so much!
thank you so much, I use frozen moringa powder cubes, can it be counted as water when mixed with sodium hydroxide?
Thank you for this clear explanation :-) is it OK to use containers and utensils and the hand blender that I also use for food? Or do I need to get separate tools for soap making?
You can use the same containers and tools for cooking, just clean them thoroughly! Especially your stick blender. It's only soap, after all.
You may want to check out this video about washing up after soap making ruclips.net/video/Pn3yfUw28OA/видео.html
Elly, I love following your recipes, from Soap to Sourdough. You make everything so clear and concise. Is there anyway you can make a video about oil portions/ratios? For example, I read that coconut oil should only be used at less than 30% in recipes [unless we're making your 100& coconut oil soap of course :)]. I would love to learn more about this from you, especially in regards to cocoa butter!
Thanks Vivian, I will be doing more videos along these lines in future, but in the mean time, this is a great oil chart that can help :) www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/
Thanks Elly! Very helpful. I’m going to get some of these tools before I get started. I am curious that if I buy a silicone mold, what is the best way of determining my volume so that I can make adjustments when I begin with one of your recipes? Should I pour oil into it and then measure the weight or what would you suggest? Thanks for helping me in this regard. 😀
I pour in water rather than oil, into a cavity and weigh that. Much easier to clean up! Then multiply that by the number of cavities and you have your capacity. Have fun!
Elly please please make a swirl colored soap.....I can’t wait. :)
I hope to soon Merle! :)
Okay I found it Elly, The answer to the question regarding the type of sodium hydroxide, it is in this video (silly me :-) . Love your video's.
I think I just answered you! :)
Well appreciated ♥️
Thank you :)
I love learning from you Elly. Could you please tell me whether it is a must to have a kitchen scale that reads decimals?
Thank you Crista, yes, a digital scale is very important for soap making to ensure that your ingredients are weighed correctly and your soap is safe to use!
Elly can I use kitchen tools for soap making provided I wash equipment throughly before putting back in the kitchen. Or do you advise separate soap making equipment?
Made my first ever soap last week from your recipe and tutorial. It came out so good just gotta see what it will be like in 4 weeks. Well 3 now. Yeah having fun learning and building my skills. Thank you so much for making me look like I know what I’m doing. Lol xxx
Great video, very well presented, If I may. vinegar will heip to neutrilize any spills of the lye solution.
No, any spilled lye should be wiped off quickly ensuring you're wearing gloves, then clean the surface with water multiple times.
Thank you for sharing :)
