Elly, Thank you so much for all of your soap making tutorials! My wife and I have always wanted to make soap. Your videos made it look so easy we gave it a try. Our first batch was very slow to trace but turned out perfect! We just made another batch yesterday. That batch was also very slow to trace but also turned out perfect as well. We added ground oatmeal and it stayed perfectly suspended in the soap. Our first batch is six weeks old and it is wonderful!! It lathers up really nice and is very luxurious! We're sold on making our own soap, thanks to you!
Rick, which recipe did you and your wife make that lathered really well? I have been wanting to make soap for some time, so I just bought my equipment and I want to get started. I too want to add dry ingredients for texture.

Hello from No. California, Elly! You are a great teacher and I have been enjoying your videos. I just took out my very first loaf of sour dough bread from the oven. @@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you again! Your good luck wishes worked very well. My Castile soap is a little more greenish and not as white as yours, supposedly because of my darker and not so light olive oil. Maybe thats why, when i put the soap out of the mold it seemed more wet than in your video after 48 hours. Do you think the difference of the olive oil may be the reason for that, because i was very precise with the grams? It was still hard enough though and i believe in the next weeks it will get harder and harder. I´m looking forward to see more videos of yours. I think you are a splendid teacher!

So here I am, a 60 year old man who has always gotten bath soap by looking for the brand labeled "soap". Then I happened to buy some plain home made coconut soap at a farmer's stand while on vacation and wow, I never knew how clean I could feel when there's no goo, oils, scents, herbs or vegetables added. Can't go back to that stand. Then tried some so called pure soap brands that really aren't and are mostly air, and your vids have got me ready to make my own now! Hopefully, the neighbors won't have to call in FEMA, ha.
I really enjoyed watching the soap being made. Its kind of stress relieving. I wil try it. Hope it comes out like yours. Thanks for the demonstration. That was exhilarating.
Soap making is so satisfying. I made the most lovely soap from a mistake. I had to mill it an rework it but is just lovely. I made a lot, took me years to use it all!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thanks for your reply! I was wondering if that turmeric soap stains counter tops? Once I spilled some turmeric on a night gown and never got that stain out. Watching you made me think soaps would be a nice Christmas gift for a few people on my list. My Grannie, who passed in ‘82 made soap the traditional way, saving her fats from cooking until she had enough. When I was about 10-12 she showed me how she made it. I remember her saying you stir the lye and water until “it is as hot as a three dollar bill”, it was a funny comment, and out of the ordinary for her. Lol I had to ask my mom what it meant. Many years later my Grandma told of her soap making business when she was young. People would bring their fat after having an animal processed, and she and her mother would render down the fat, then make soap and return it to the customer. We have it pretty easy! I haven’t made any in a long time, but I think I might make a batch with my dad when I go see him next. He loves homemade soap. And what is not to love?
Such wonderful memories, and a great story there Carole, thank you! As far as I know tumeric in soap doesn't stain anything - I've used it in soap without issue :) Happy soap making with your Dad, how special for you both xx
Your way to explain thing is just wonderful you inspire me to start my own business. I hope that i will. Please excuse my English i making my first steps in it .good luck for you and thank you for all the video
Thank you. Yes, you can easily make soap from home and sell your soaps as a small business. Some countries have regulations about selling soap, but you would need to check that where you live.
Hello! New Subscriber and I cannot wait to see and learn from more of your videos! I’ve always wanted to make soap for me as well as others and it always intimidated me. I enjoyed your video and cannot wait to get started! TFS
Fantastic - welcome to my channel! Glad to hear my videos have been helpful. I've been making a few bread related videos lately, time for some more on soap! Thanks again for your comment and kind feedback. I really appreciate it!
Hi Elly. I finally got my lye (no fragrance or essential oils, colourants other than natural colours yet). I made my first batch with filtered water (as my water smells sulfuric in the spring). I can still smell it in the first batch even with the filtered water. The soap itself turned out fine. I coloured some of it with spirulina, it worked out fine. i can send pictures if you like. Not sure how though except through email.
Sounds really good Chris! You can send photos via my facebook or instagram accounts if you like. I am a bit slow to reply though, I get a lot of messages! Congrats on your soap :)
Wowahhhhh I'm learning whenever I want and I learned what's needed to produce soap. I have doubt mam what's the shelf life of the soap. How to preserve the soap. What component is used to protect the shelf life. Whether we are using normal water or distilled water.
Hello Ms Elly your soap making skills are enormous and the way make is spic n span, very pleasing way of making soap in a simple manner, appreciate if you could add little more detail on weight of the ingredients would sure help us a lot. you are just awesome Ms Elly god bless you....Thank you
Thank you, all of my soap recipe videos have full details in the description box of each video. Here is my playlist page - you can see them all there: ruclips.net/channel/UCqsvmrjWY7fPcKqWHnYVTMAplaylists
Just subscribed. Your video is the most detailed, informative video I've seen on this subject. Thanks for making what seemed like a very problematic process look so easy to try. Thanks so much. Now going to watch the rest of your soap making tutorials. Margaret
Thank you Crista, yes, a digital scale is very important for soap making to ensure that your ingredients are weighed correctly and your soap is safe to use!
Good question! I've never used one so I'm not sure. Maybe you could use a deeper bowl so the beaters are fully submerged under the soap batter? The other thing would be just to mix the soap to a light trace (just starting to thicken), then stop mixing and try to tap out the bubbles. If you tap the bowl on your counter, if the soap mixture isn't too thick the bubbles would surface. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about the bubbles, they don't hurt the soap in any way :)
Elly, is it necessary to wrap the moulds up in towels to keep the heat on? What if it's left uncovered while it solidifies in moulds? I'd really appreciate :) you're great I love your tutorials 💕💕💕
Hi there, no, technically it doesn't need to be wrapped up, but you will get a much more even texture if it is. What happens is that the soap goes through a 'gel phase' and goes translucent when it saponifies. If it's not kept warm enough, it won't gel all the way through and you'll get uneven colour. You can see an exact demonstration of a 'partial gel' and what it looks like in this video (I didn't wrap the soap well enough) ruclips.net/video/Kc7duzDEa6Y/видео.html
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you very much 😊😊😊 I've wrap all my soaps up but sometimes I get some soap mass left over and I pour it in small cavity moulds and leave it unwrapped. That small leftover soap feels a little "softer" and creamy to touch. I wondered if it's safe CHEMICALLY... if the soda neutralized properly. Lots of hugs here from me - Yvonne 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Hello Elly, i'm really glad i found you! You really motivated me to just try and do it even with the scary parts (caustic soada)! My Big question is, could you do a shampoo bar tutorial? Thank you for the Videos! Greetings from switzerland
Hi Manon, yes I did one a while back, but the method is a bit unusual. You can find that one here ruclips.net/video/Bh92IqTDfAA/видео.html After making the soap and the video, I think my preferred method to make it is cold process. Check it out and see what you think :)
Thanks just watched, would like to see the 🐈. Very informative. I will subscribe as only just started making soap but only with melt and pour. And seeing what I like best. Which I find is a good way to start. Looks like I'm going to busy watching your videos. Thanks from Shropshire in UK.
Thanks so much Aliki, I like your approach, I'm the same. Lots of research is important for soap making. My cat makes brief appearances in some of my other videos :)
Thanks Elly! Very helpful. I’m going to get some of these tools before I get started. I am curious that if I buy a silicone mold, what is the best way of determining my volume so that I can make adjustments when I begin with one of your recipes? Should I pour oil into it and then measure the weight or what would you suggest? Thanks for helping me in this regard. 😀
I pour in water rather than oil, into a cavity and weigh that. Much easier to clean up! Then multiply that by the number of cavities and you have your capacity. Have fun!
Thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about the facebook mix up. I've merged my pages now, you can find me here: facebook.com/ellyseveryday/
Elly, I love following your recipes, from Soap to Sourdough. You make everything so clear and concise. Is there anyway you can make a video about oil portions/ratios? For example, I read that coconut oil should only be used at less than 30% in recipes [unless we're making your 100& coconut oil soap of course :)]. I would love to learn more about this from you, especially in regards to cocoa butter!
Thanks Vivian, I will be doing more videos along these lines in future, but in the mean time, this is a great oil chart that can help :) www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/
Hi Elly, thank you for making this video. Haven't made my first batch yet but hopefully today! Question. I have a porcelain kitchen sink, is it safe to clean up my utensil s and stuff in the sink?
Hello, and thank you! To be honest, I'm not sure how to advise you regarding your sink. I would like to think that it's pretty tough, given it's purpose after all, but it might be a good idea to do a bit more further research. One way to reduce any risk would be to leave your soapy utensils and bowl/bucket for a day until the remaining batter turns to soap, that way it won't be caustic, won't do any harm and you will have plenty of suds to wash up with! Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer.
It really depends on the recipe, and the oil (some are stronger than others), but I generally use essentail oils at a rate of 3-5% of the total soap oil batch for each recipe. This video will help to explain that more thoroughly :) ruclips.net/video/AqKxin0q1bM/видео.html
Hello Elly. Thank you for your videos. Just wondering where do you usually buy acostic soda? A friend of mine told me that i shouldnt get it at supermarkets as its supposed for cleaning of sink pipes.
Are you in Australia? Here I buy mine from Coles, Woolworths or Bunnings. In most supermarkets you can get both caustic soda and drain cleaner, which looks similar but has additional ingredients. Caustic soda can also be used to clear drains, just to confuse things! As long as the product you are buying says 'caustic soda' and it should say somewhere on the label either 98 or 99% sodium hydroxide, that's the one you want.
You don't know how long it took me to find you! I've tried following other videos and even signed up for a webinar where I was completely LOST! Thank you. One question, where can we get the measuring cups you have? I see plenty on Amazon but not sure they are the right kind and can withstand heat. Thank you!
Elly, thank you so so much for all your help...you have a wonderful teachimg style and so easy to follow. i am so chuffed i made my first soap a couple of days ago and it saponified and turned out!! I was thrilled. Everything i know i have learnt from you!!, I just have two questions, please you could help me.? On one of the bars..i made 4 individual little bars to try...in the corner it had a little bit that was like jelly and not solid like the rest. What might have caused that do you think?, The other question is about fragrance...i still haven't quite understood how to work out how much fragrance you use and in what form...i bought some rose absolut to try but its in a tiny bottle and comes out drop by drop...what form do you buy your frangrance in and how do you work out how much to use? Do you have a "Fragrance video"? Lol x
Thank you Annie, that's lovely feedback. The little gelly part is probably an area where your soap heated up quite a lot during the saponification/gel phase. It's no issue, just cosmetic. I am planning a soap fragrancing video soon, so that should help, but in the mean time I tend to fragrance my soap anywhere between 2-4% of the total oil batch for essentail oils, and about 1-2% for fragrance oils because they tend to be stronger. It really depends on the oils you're using. Many essential oil suppliers will recommend how much to use in soap. The general rule is that for a product to be skin safe for EO's 3% is the maximum. You can get away with more in soap because it's a wash off product. Hope that helps a bit. You can search for more info on this, it's out there :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you so much for the lead info...i will look out for the video...in the meantime we have just had another practise, using a different oil mix and with rose and Marjoram. Thank you for all your help x
It depends on the recipe, but yeh, it could take a while. Heat acellerates trace, so use warm oils and warm/hot lye solution and that will speed things up.

I didn't want you to stop ❤❤❤❤ anyway thank you for sharing dear... hoping to learn more from you❤❤
Am in love with Soap making, cnt wait to start. That's Great
Thank you so much for your soap making videos! I am learning. God bless you!
That's great! I'm very happy to hear your story! All the best with it. I'm sure you'll find it very satisfying :)
Glad I found you. From one creator to another thumbs up and subscribed. Nice content!
Thank you Jen!
I really enjoyed watching the soap being made. Its kind of stress relieving. I wil try it. Hope it comes out like yours. Thanks for the demonstration. That was exhilarating.
Thank you so much :)
Soap making is so satisfying. I made the most lovely soap from a mistake. I had to mill it an rework it but is just lovely. I made a lot, took me years to use it all!
I completely agree Carole! Handmade soap is the best. I seem to love it more and more as the years go on :)
As far as I know tumeric in soap doesn't stain anything - I've used it in soap without issue :)
Happy soap making with your Dad, how special for you both xx
Thank you so much for sharing your what you have learned and your experiences.

Thank you! Nice to hear from you.
Great video, very well presented, If I may. vinegar will heip to neutrilize any spills of the lye solution.
No, any spilled lye should be wiped off quickly ensuring you're wearing gloves, then clean the surface with water multiple times.
Your great 🤗cant wait to get started ..thanks

Thanks so much...great way to explain for beginners
Thank you, I appreciate your feedback :)
I like your tutorings,
Everything u do is clear.
I would like to know whether I can get started with making soap from home as a business too
Thank you. Yes, you can easily make soap from home and sell your soaps as a small business. Some countries have regulations about selling soap, but you would need to check that where you live.
Simply superb ma'am, really u r great teacher for beginners.
Thank you so much.
That was so well explained! Great video!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful :)
You are the best Elly's thank you for all these info, very motivating & I am so excited to do one :) will send you pics for sure thank you
Wonderful!
Thank you Elly😊

Thank you for this very important information.
Thanks much for this video...very helpful!
You're welcome, glad you liked it.
Okay I found it Elly, The answer to the question regarding the type of sodium hydroxide, it is in this video (silly me :-) . Love your video's.
I think I just answered you! :)

No problem.
Thank you!
This is truly helpful. God Bless You :)
You're welcome! So happy to hear that :)
I love learning from you Elly. Could you please tell me whether it is a must to have a kitchen scale that reads decimals?
Thank you Crista, yes, a digital scale is very important for soap making to ensure that your ingredients are weighed correctly and your soap is safe to use!
Thank you for your clear explanation and I have a question, can I use the normal eggs blender instead?
Yes, you can, it will just take a little longer :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you for your answer, but does it cause too much bubbles in the mixture, and if yes then how can I solve it?
Good question! I've never used one so I'm not sure. Maybe you could use a deeper bowl so the beaters are fully submerged under the soap batter? The other thing would be just to mix the soap to a light trace (just starting to thicken), then stop mixing and try to tap out the bubbles. If you tap the bowl on your counter, if the soap mixture isn't too thick the bubbles would surface. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about the bubbles, they don't hurt the soap in any way :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you so much for your tips!! I am really excited now :D
Yay! Another video! Thanks!
Hehe thanks Michael!
Thanks Yvonne, yes the ungelled soap will be safe to use, it just hasn't had the benefit of as much heat in the process :)
You can find that one here ruclips.net/video/Bh92IqTDfAA/видео.html
After making the soap and the video, I think my preferred method to make it is cold process. Check it out and see what you think :)
Elly please please make a swirl colored soap.....I can’t wait. :)
I hope to soon Merle! :)
Thanks a lot for this very useful class.
So nice of you
Thanks just watched, would like to see the 🐈.
Have fun!
Thank You so much for this recipes and basic understanding..
Could you please cover topic: How to make Crystal Clear Soap Base?
Thank you. I've never made a clear soap base. I only make cold and hot processed soaps :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Sure Thank You..

How much essential oil ? I loved this video . Thank you .
Thank you very much. I will check out these stores you mentioned.
I love all your recipes 🙌🏼
You don't know how long it took me to find you! I've tried following other videos and even signed up for a webinar where I was completely LOST! Thank you. One question, where can we get the measuring cups you have? I see plenty on Amazon but not sure they are the right kind and can withstand heat. Thank you!
Thank you Amelia! Any polypropylene, No. 5 plastic containers are fine for soap making :)
Elly, thank you so so much for all your help...you have a wonderful teachimg style and so easy to follow. i am so chuffed i made my first soap a couple of days ago and it saponified and turned out!! I was thrilled. Everything i know i have learnt from you!!,
I just have two questions, please you could help me.?
On one of the bars..i made 4 individual little bars to try...in the corner it had a little bit that was like jelly and not solid like the rest. What might have caused that do you think?,
The other question is about fragrance...i still haven't quite understood how to work out how much fragrance you use and in what form...i bought some rose absolut to try but its in a tiny bottle and comes out drop by drop...what form do you buy your frangrance in and how do you work out how much to use?
Thank you for all your help x
can you use this recipe for facial cleansers also ? like a liquid base instead of a bar ?
No, I'm afraid liquid soap making is a different process altogether.
So I'm able to use whisk but I have to stir for an hour right? Thank u for your info!
It depends on the recipe, but yeh, it could take a while. Heat acellerates trace, so use warm oils and warm/hot lye solution and that will speed things up.
