Can we all agree to make this the go to video! I think this should be mandatory for more than just beginners. There are a lot of people who could benefit from listening to the factual info in this video Thank you Cathy
Thanks for clearing up that "DRYING" coconut soap myth.
Any time!
You and Uncle John are about the most straightforward soapers, many can be pedantic and alarmist when it comes to soap making.. whilst I love them all, I would prefer a no nonsense approach.
Yes! Both of y’all (uncle John and this channel) my faves
I also love Becky's Homestead. Easy and to the point.
@@andycristiana1043Wow, yeah. Becky taught me how to make soap! Thank you for reminding me of her name. I had quite forgotten, as that was 8 long years ago!
@@bellyfulochelly4222 she taught me laundry soap, bath soap, and how to raise chickens 😃 glad I could help.
I love that you spoke up about the "crystallization". As a science major, I know that their claims regarding that is false but they still insist
I knew that about my soap curing time, but still gave it 4 weeks. I bet it is ready sooner. I live in a very dry climate. Maybe instead of 'curing' time we should call it 'evaporation' time. Cure sounds like there are chemical changes still taking place. Great video. Thanks.
That's exactly what happens. Cure doesn't mean just water evaporation. It develops a crystalline structure and undergoes an acidification process too. Soap benefits from all these 3 things. Sadly, she missed talking about acidification (which is the reason why soaps become milder in time).
Thank you. Glad to see someone explain this. So many people don't understand what it takes to make good product.
You bet!
I love it when you talk science!! Soapmaking is as much science as it is art and you show that time after time. Thank you.
Thank you for this! I had long suspected that any recipe can be used for piping, but so many folks suggest that a specific recipe is ideal. I appreciate you demonstrating things like the water evaporation-we've actually found that about 13% of the mass evaporates out of our soaps during a 4-week cure! It's all so fascinating, isn't it? Love the chemistry of it!
thanks for this information. It goes back to what I learned at the beginning of my soaping journey two years ago.
Thank you for this information. I am so glad you have explained it clearly for everyone to understand.
That's why I love you and your channel dear Teach! Time flies but you didn't give up on our education. 🥰🥰🥰 There's no too many knowledges here! We love to learn from you!
Thank you so much. I wish people would understand the basics of this.
Thank you Cathy! I love the way you break things down clear, understandable explanations.
I'm so glad!
Thank you for your informative video. I used soap 2 days after making & I love it.i figured out the frosting on my own, but it's nice to have a professional confirm it.Thank you again.
Thank you, I was really worried to gift a soap before the 4-6 weeks because the LYE might cause harm. Appreciate you 🙏🏼
Love your videos as always Cathy!!!
Your tips and knowledge are always welcomed by all. Will be looking forward to your next reveal. Thanks Cathy!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for explaining these. I so appreciate the clarification.
I’ve been soaping with u for years and you are the best!
Thank you for dispelling the myths. I'm a doctor turned soapcrafter and I have always believed what you said about being able to use the soap immediately after it has saponified. I'm so glad you are using this platform! Please keep educating us!
Excellent tutorial thank you.
Returned to soap making (I make soaps just for myself, friends and family) after my personal stock ended. Using this information makes it clearer and end up with better soaps. Thank you!
Great info. Thanks.
You are so amazing thank you for everything that you do here on your channel forever grateful.
Great information thank You
Thank you. Very informative!
Thank you with the soap frosting tip
Any time!
Well said. Bravo !
Thank you for the information on the soap frosting.
My pleasure!
Thank you so very much. This information is invaluable. You are appreciated.
Thank you so much! I always learn so much from you’re videos!
I was wondering how I would know when my soap is ready to be used. Your weighing method is superb. Thank you so much for that info.
I completely support all of your assumptions. My piping so is the same as my regular soap recipe I just water discount a lot so that it thickens faster and I can get on with piping.
So informative !! I'am a beginner and all this informations are priceless🙂
Thanks for providing this useful information
This is really good, I'm a new-ish soap maker and this has opened my eyes a little more
This is really good information about “evaporations” vs “curing”. Thank you so much 😊 I really appreciated your kindness explaination the truth after hundreds of videos I watched... 🤗🤗
Thank you so much
THANK YOU CATHY!....I am new to cold processing and I see why people love to make their own soap and to start a business....I worked with melt and pour for years and decided it was time to try cold processing. So these tips will come in handy.
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Very helpful! It's always nice to learn facts 👍😊
Love this!
Thank you for posting.
Lovely, thank you.
Thankyou so much ❤️
Thank you Cathy, you are such and inspiration.
Greetings from Costa Rica.
Thanks for this video.
Please make more videos like these
Sure thing!
Thank you for the video, very clear and helpful information.
You are welcome!
Great tips! Will always be subscribed
Ty so much x
Thank you for clarifying all those myths!
Our pleasure!
Thanks for sharing
Thank you
I agree with you ma'am especially on the 4weeks curing time.
I've used 3days old soap and no problem.
especially if you water discount and use sodium lactate, it will get very hard after a few days
Not hardness now.
But well done soap (full saponification).
The soap I talked about was not discounted but well saponified (no extra lye).
I don’t find it like that. First few weeks very harsh, at 4 weeks still not that great. There’s one point that soap starts to lather magically before or after 6 weeks. Sometimes it takes 8 weeks. It depends on the formula. Sometimes chemists don’t know it all. I mean have you seen what Kevin Dunn considered the best soap?! Or balanced soap? Unusable soap for me if I follow his advice. I do agree on piping soap. I knew that before and many people know you can just use regular recipe.
Thank you so very much!
Thank you! Wry helpful and interesting. I’m now to soaping so this is so helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much 😊greetings from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 🌷
Thank you for this clarifications.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, as a new soaper trying to get accurate facts can be confusing. All of your points confirmed my suspicions, I just haven't had that information confirmed for certain until now
I love your videos!
Great video
So helpful thank you
So glad!
Thanx
Thank you for such a good video. I am new at all this and you really have helped a lot. What recipe is this one please? Need to try this one!! Please keep up with you awesome videos!!
Can you do a tutorial on adding fragrances and essential oils!!? Please 🙏
Is there a place to find more about irritants and curing?
Can you do a video about preservatives in soap ? Since the cure time drys out the water is it necessary? I’ve been seeing mixed reviews. Thanks love the video new subscriber
Can you use melt and pour soap for frosting?
So the curing time for cold process is for water loss only? I've heard that it takes 4-6 weeks for all of the lye to neutralize in CP soap so it wont be so harsh. But in CP soap the lye has neutralized after 24 hours?
Excellent!! Thank you for sharing! If you follow her and view her videos you will learn much about soaping.
This is how soap is made!
What a wonderfully informative video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Soaping101 is my “go to” source for all my soaping questions and concerns.
Mine as well. She is my teacher.😁
Yep I have always used my soaps by the 3rd and 4th day and no problem
Thank you so much, I have one question we must add the superfat for soap recipe Or it included already when we make the batch?
You will need to adjust your recipe to a 20% superstar. Most lye calculators have an option for this.
How long does your bar last in the shower?
My mom used to call it Lysol is when you just make the soap and you can actually use it because it clears your skin pretty good according to her
Shout out idol
Mam please post your video with subtitle
I made a few batches of CP soap. I'm a beginner. Even after curing more than 6 weeks when I take the soap it is wet like. Could you please help. I'm in India. Is it coz of humidity?
Is it okay to decorate the top of CP soap with whole cloves?
Most of my soaps are 100% coconut oil, but my customers love them due to the abundant lather. Yet they never complain about dry skin. If do, it's because of particular additives not suitable with their skin. I also usually sell my soaps 2 weeks after the making date. I do water discount.
I just started making 100% Coconut oil soap with 20% superfat. I love it.
Is water discount the same as superfat?
@@ginalyneusantos2285 no. You can check other Soaping101 video on Superfat.
Ma'am then, after making the soap, don't have to wait 4-5 weeks to use it. Can we use the soap immediately after making it?
Don’t ask stupid Question. She is not an expert.
Pls..some peoples added salt food with d .water befor lay is this useful or what .the added 3% for 1 kg
I let mine dry 6 weeks because if I wrap it and it's still shrinking, I have to tighten the wrap
Thanks sis. The coconut oil thing is same thing with using only palm kernel oil which is cheaper here in Nigeria. Thanks so much for the clarifications
Please i need translation
I can't wait until I can get a bar cutter
You are always the best mentor for me. But, I want to include that most customers dont understand lye.. Goodbye chemistry and hello false advertising (cursing lye as evil) 😖😭
Why is the video glitchy?
Please can you put the translation usage in the video? Speak Spanish
Myths: 1. Pyrex is safe
2. Acidification doesn't exist
3. Curing means water evaporation.
If you're going to cite Kevin Dunn, include the source. Or was this said over the phone? I doubt he ever said that there is no proof that soaps experience a drop in pH and that a longer cure time doesn't indeed make the soap milder. After the saponification process and during the cure time, the atmospheric carbon dioxide naturally present in the air reacts with any excess alkalinity in the soap. As soap is cured, it becomes less alkaline in the process, which is called soap acidification. Soaps that are less alkaline are much gentler on the skin, so yes, the notion that soaps become gentler over time is most certainly true. Crystallisation also doesn't finish at 4 weeks mark, it is an ongoing process and soap benefits from it because this change in structure makes it harder (so it's not just water evaporation), more lasting (again, different than having less water in it but they are correlated) and have a better lather.
My exact words: "I asked two experts in the industry if there was scientific backing behind it (the crystalline structure change). Jackie Thompson and Dr Kevin Dunn said unfortunately there is not". End of sentence. If you have a scientific abstract then please share it with the soapmaking industry on your social media platform.
@@soaping101 Stated : Myth 1 buster 'soap needs to cure 4-6wks before use'. If that's the statement, then it is right to say so..... cause it is referring to reaction between Lye and the oils has completed? Perhaps the focus should be on WHY soap gets 'better' with curing... eg high olive oil soap is different after curing. I am really curious. Thus, perhaps another video is needed for 'why (some) soaps are better after curing', it is definitely more than just water loss & harder bar. We can really 'see' color changes and different lather texture, which I believe is more than difference in water (which seems the direction of this discussion is heading)
No subtitles for the deaf????
