You won't understand how awesome this game was those days. The only known RTS was Dune 2. Warcraft had more advanced mechanics (selecting 4 units), much better graphics and music. And that medieval atmosphere... That was something NEW. Are you joking about YES YES MY LORD etc? Having sound card and listening to human voice was a kind of magic those days (mainly in my country)
*Sound card sold seperately.
It sounds monotonous after all those years, but it was so AWESOME back then, indeed. Although sometimes it's better not to ruin the nostalgia with actual gameplay. ;-)
It was the same in any country. Just having your PC play human speech was amazing. I bought this game for $95 when it was brand new, it came with a LOT of floppy discs :)
Dune II has fantastic music, and it also already has digitised voices, though.
@@coldfusionstormgaming1808 Everyone had a Soundblaster 16 or better. Everyone with a gaming setup with the powerful 486 and ems added RAM of a total whooping 32kb.

This game was mind-blowing when I was a child. A friend of mine had a finished basement with a TV and a PC. His older brother had a bedroom down there, too. It was his brother's computer, and he had Warcraft 1 on it, along with Civilization. That was the first time I saw this game. I immediately got the game for myself, and then went on to Warcraft 2 the moment it came out afterwards. I remember going to Walmart with my mom to get it. The rest is history. I'm 38 now.
You see, this 1994 game still has a better gameplay, strategy, and art quality (models & animation) compared to many modern pixel art strategy games (e.g.Kingdom: Two Crowns, Hero's Hour etc.) This timeless masterpiece simply need a rework on the UX & UI.
@@CP-jk3tc check Wargus. It's not a remaster but it brings many modern stuff like high resolution, modern OS support, ...

Back when the games were hard
Yeah but let's not confuse natural difficulty with artificial difficulty.
@@point-five-oh6249 yeah i just tried playing this yesterday and gave up after the first mission because the controls were so fucking terrible. Just felt bad to play.
@@brettjacobson4600 Right, I suppose some of that is due to gamers of today's world being spoiled on easier control mapping, but also, it's a similar difference between games like old school Castlevania and Dark Souls. Castlevania is hard because so much crap can happen to you that you have no control over and there is no real learning curve other than in-game knowledge... i.e. when the mobs can juggle you around. Dark Souls is hard but it is understandably your own fault when you die, i.e. you failed to dodge the boss's signature move and it one-shots you. That's a learning curve.
WC1 is in a similar league where the AI is so janky that it almost doesn't matter what you do because the AI almost always has a counter to you because they are able to control the game much better than you ever could hope for. The AI has maphack, can control their buildings and units much better than you can, and on WC1 in particular, the Human race is quite difficult when you get to the point in the game where the Humans unlock invisibility. The AI shows no mercy and knows when you are vulnerable and exploits that weakness. The AI effectively has infinite resources so it's not like you can turtle up in your base. WC1 is a great example of artificial difficulty where the learning curve flattens off hard when it meets just dumb luck.
lol sure but this was a bit too much. One unit at a time? Starcraft Brood War found the perfect balance with this stuff where it is still hard enough that a pro player will win 100% of the time against a mediocre player, but it’s still somewhat playable for newer players.
Some of the unintuitive aspects of SCBW - no smart cast, no multi building select, cap to unit selection - add to its brilliance as a competitive game. But War1 was a bit too unintuitive/restrictive to be viable as a competitive game. War2 got a hell of a lot closer though which is why people still play it today
@@point-five-oh6249 You can decrease the game speed and when the fastest speed is already pretty fair, you should be able to get away with a lot. Plus, he got away with finishing a campaign first time here in 6 hours here, not save scumming.
Watching him destroy that tower at around 2:42:00 knowing for a full minute beforehand that he was going to forget the mission and destroy the tower was pretty funny.

Loved the atmosphere (graphics, sound, music) in this game; never beaten.
I love WC1 a lot as well, classic feel
Love the dark medieval atmosphere in this game. War2 did'nt have that.
Exactly. Really hoping they'll do a remaster (not remake) someday with loads of extra campaign material.

Very entertaining video. Not only is it a touch of nostalgia, but it's like watching someone play through for the first time. Watching you build roads out, then farms, so you can put a lumber mill next to the woods.
Fun to see someone almost learning the game for the first time.

I miss 1994 too, my cousin helped build this game and I remember getting the demo of this game with only 4 levels and I loved it, so much fun.
have you ever said to him: im stuck Step Cousin, help me out in level 10 Human Campaign.. ;)
It's pity they removed those dungeon exploration missions from WC2 and WC3.
Yeah, they are so good, there are actually a few in Warcraft 3 thank goodness but Warcraft 2 was just water..water....water.....
Really? I'm always disappointed because there's no base/economy RTS in these filler missions.
The most interesting thing I've seen is a third person combat perspective for these missions in SC1 Mass Recall. You can play as Jim or Zerg Kerrigan with special abilities.
When this game came out I loved it. I played it all the time. I mowed yards to buy a copy for my neighbor so we could fight each other.
I play it occasionally today. Dear lord did the controls not age well. The only reason I can get over the annoyances of the controls, is nostalgia lol. That an Grom from dark portal.
It's funny how we didn't know better when this came out.
I'd love an anniversary addition with improved interaction

Sooooo many good memories with this game over 20 years ago. I remember "obtaining" this game on a couple of floppies from my school computer lab, then spending 4 hours with my friends trying to figure out how to unpack the .arj (pre-zip!) files. Then roaming the Orcish swamps with a couple of grunts and summoning elementals...good times!
Don't copy that floppy!
+Bigassboya
Come on, guys!
I LOVE this game. I was 8 at the time and this game gave me shivers. Awesome music as well! Especially for the humans.
First Pc game I ever had when I was 12! Years later I still go back to this game every couple years just for nostalgia.
Yeah, it’s rough to play, but that’s ok. Nostalgia worth it!
Starcraft 1 was after Warcraft 2. You didn't have to manually click everything >
What I still love about the first game was how much darker it was in tone compared to the next two.
I’m not sure I would call this “dark”.
@@diamondmetal3062 Dark doesn't necessarily mean grimdark or edgy. It can mean the atmosphere, the style and the aesthetics as well. For example, Double Dragon 2 is darker compared to Double Dragon 3 or Super Double Dragon.
@@Aivottaja No yeah I understand, it’s just even the atmosphere reminds me of a charming DOS point-and-click adventure, especially with Bill Roper’s hammy voice acting and the chiptune music.
I came here to warm up on Warcraft lore, and so far every single ad is for the Warcraft III Reforged that just got announced.
I feel good. Real good. B)
This is pure nostalgia awesomeness! I really want to play Warcraft 1 again at some point! :)
that abby mission if i remember it back in the day there was a room with wepon racks and u can send those peons there and they would turn into more troops

such a great game, I played it through the half but lost my save file yesterday. Came here to finish it. I am gonna play the second game now!
Thanks so much for this! I loved this game but I'll never play it again. Controls way too frustration for me in my old age. I enjoyed watching you deal with the frustration while I enjoyed reliving it, especially the music.
It's fun once you get the "feel" of how it wants you to play :) Glad you enjoyed it
this was my second RTS after dune 2, gd times ... but compared to today's controls slightly painful to revisit xD
I remember Dad owned me with those Daemons when we 1v1'd, little 6 year old me got very upset!
~~
The spear orc vs ogre fight was hilarious!
Warcraft 2 was the game that really fascinated me back in '96 but I hadn't played W1. I decided to play if a few days ago and it was a lot of fun to play and finish, even though the mechanics are quite demanding. It was getting difficult at times so I searched for a youtube video for solutions. I actually watched pretty much all of the video, you are so funny and thanks for doing this video!
I laughed so hard at the part where you said "I'm fairly confident I can take pretty much whatever the AI throws at me" and then get all troops killed. I had just done that before watching the video and I noticed it's really hard not to get all attackers smashed.
And there was the part where the daemons were wreaking havoc in the enemy base; then "speaking of havoc" the enemy had just sent some to allied base and was actually wreaking havoc :)
SuperPopandau glad you enjoyed it ^^
wtiiwarcraft I also made a donation and I want to congratulate you on your fitness progam, it's something I want to get into as well, just haven't managed to gather the motivation yet...
SuperPopandau Octavian?~ Regarding the fitness, just try. There is no failure, only learning how to succeed ^^ I have been on and off fitness/diet for over 10 years and each time I "failed" it taught me something new that I took into the next experience
wtiiwarcraft Yes, you got me :) That's a very interesting outlook, I like that a lot! Thanks for the tip!
SuperPopandau you're welcome
Oh god, those orc peons chopping at the same tree...
+tohopes With a big enough tree it's possible :) My mother's new husband once owned a sawmill. With big enough trees it can be welcome to have more than once person, especially if you don't have chainsaws.
AtotehZ
Oh, certainly. But in this game, if multiple peons chop the same tree, as they often do, only one will get wood from it and for the other it will have been a complete waste of effort.
tohopes I wasn't aware of that :) I think I was 6 years old when I played it back when it came out.
Pretty realistic though, even though it's probably not intended.
AtotehZ
It's not realistic though, because the peons don't actually help each other; two peons don't chop the tree twice as fast. Each peon counts a set number of chops and then takes the tree down.
It's all I see, over and over, watching this guy play : )
time?
Wish they remade this game with improved controls. I was raised with Warcraft 2 and I simply can't get past the awful control scheme of the first one.
Hahaha, and I wish they had done an AI rework for Warcraft 2 xD
TrojanPiece
Part of its charm was the frustration of having your units stuck at a tree, or a peon trapped after building a lumber mill... I don't think that fixing it will result on the same game
Charm? What charm? No ways. The charm of them is being simply warcraft 1 and warcraft 2. If you do an AI rework, it will not change the fact that it's warcraft 1 and 2. It will only be awesomer. Changing a game and losing it's charm is what warcraft 3 is.
*****
The worst bit tome was not being able to move more than 4 units at a time. You sum: being attacked by 30 units at a time from different sides of the base, not being able to move more than 4 units at a time, units getting stuck on buildings or ignoring the enemy, and a scroll that takes forever to go where you want....
And yeah, you have a nearly impossible game because of the interface
All these old RTS games have been re made as Starcraft 2 custom maps
Great childhood memories of this game. Played it loads with a friend on 2 pcs connected with an LPT (printer) cable. I remember that we made some LARP weapons and bashed at each other pretending to be orcs and humans as well. Good times.
Doesn't count if at least someone didn't end up impaled and someone consumed another persons blood.
hahahaha
8:35:53 human and orc have the same level of abilities at the same time, as soon as the warlock get the second level of abilities (poison cloud) the conjurer get their as well (rain of fire), same goes for cleric with necrolyte. so as soon as you see your opponent use a demon or water elemental you can get your summon too.
2:47:49: Briefly scroll past a tableau of a huge peon snarl blocking the bridge to the only gold mine. "Everything looks fine here. Keep up the good work!"
2:48:00: "Sure wish I had enough money to make this upgrade."
2:48:58: "Hey, what the hell?"
Ahah, nice jokes :D
Wut? Russell from the old videos of AxP :O
Warcraft 1 today was released by GOG for $5.99.
I had been watching Age of Empires 2 on Twitch. Did not realize that Warcraft was basically the same gameplay style without upgrades and with powerful summoning magic - the way unites capable of building structures also gather and return resources to buildings is the main similarity when compared to games like Command and Conquer where there are units whose sole job is basically collect from puddles for a resource that turns into money or energy.
I remember playing this, was my fav back in the day
The lack of voice actors was strong
Heh, that utterance reminds me of Skyrim.
+MrJazZ Not as strong as the lack of disk space.
Skyrim has many voice actors? Wasn't it like 80? The issue is, the games so big and there are so many characters. It also allows mods to be implemented very easily.
Dodgy Dingoz skyrim isnt from 80s

He's saying Skyrim has like 80 voice actors, not the fact Skyrim came out in 80s.

I tried playing this just last night. It was so clunky and awkward, I gave up and switched to W2. Night and day difference. I'm glad you made this, because I'm not sure I can be arsed to go back and play W1 ever again. Maybe someday, but sheesh.
I know that this is years later, but Warcraft Orcs and Humans also Warcraft 2 Battle.net edition is now on sale for GOG around $15. I do love this game, since I had grew up with it.
It's hard to describe how mind blowing this game was at the time.
And hooooly crap was it primitive compared to modern RTS. No drag select. Could only select 4 units at a time, and you had to hold down "Ctrl" to click on each one one at a time. Units had no AI. They all just stood in one spot unless manually ordered to do something. You couldn't build more town halls; once your starting mine ran out your workers had to go ALL the way to other mines. The best strategy was to just spam wizards to keep summoning elementals/demons.
+fahbs agreed!
+fahbs it actually has drag select. Alt or Ctrl key does that
+fahbs I have never played this game, only part 2 and 3 *:`-(*
No, no it did not.
Holy crap, I just realized that right now this game is as old as Pong was in 1994.
Yes, it did. It DOES have drag select.
so you play as Ogrim Doomhammer in the orc campaign? since you are warchief and decide to resume the dark portal stuff with guldan.
And as Lothar in Human
FYI the game out on both floppy disk and CD-ROM. I remember because we had the floppy disk version on our computer. It played pretty much exactly the same as the CD-ROM version with only a few mostly cosmetic differences. The CGI opening wasn't animated (it was presented in still images instead), and there was no voice during the campaign briefings or ending. There was also no 3d map at the start either. One grinding difference however was the lag was even worse when their were large amount of units moving about at the same time.
I loved how he built the lumber mill near the trees. Cute.
yes! yes! yes my lord yes my lo lo lo lord sounds like they trying to remix
Yes, my lord.
This game is actually pretty easy once you get it. Basically, take the chokepoints with melee tanking and ranged units behind, and hold them until you can get ultimate summons, then attack with the summons nonstop (leaving some casters with full mana in your base for defend with them as well) and gg
Gotta love that wood choping sound!
So this is where those weird mag'har buildings on outland came from.
heh
They should bring this game to 3DS lol. Would look right at home on the bottom touch screen, and given the screen is quite small, I'm sure the game would look great.
It should available on my toaster then as well.
Got to view it a bit late. That's the only Warcraft I finished (both campaigns) and when I did I used a mixture of units in formations with melee at front protecting the archers (and knights to kill catapults before they get near) a few catapults to deal with concentrations of casters or enemy archers, then I would move the line forward, provoke the enemy to charge into it and when I had summoning spells also use either great number of scorpions or about 6 elementals. I used a lot less peasants and preserved my troops better. But ok, spamming a single type of unit also worked, and it was fun to watch.
longest video i ever watched, enjoyed every second of it

damn memories.. then onto warcraft 2/3, diablo 1/2, starcraft, World of Warcraft.. this was when any game Blizzard released was a guaranteed mega hit.. they just couldn't lose, their games were awesome. Now I don't know what happened maybe they just got too corporatized but its not the same Blizzard anymore.
they got too greedy and instead of setting trends they now follow them. The fact they bought the maker of Candy Crush Saga and moved to micro transaction games (IE pay2win / Facebook games) pretty much sums up the direction they have chosen to travel.

That's why I love Warcraft 1. Youngins go into it with their "gonna do it quick and easy" mentality, and then they get schooled by a 20 year old AI lol. I love it everytime. Still love the 3d map and the briefings.

Funnily enough, this was the first game that had box selection for units :) The 4 selection limit was actually a design decision, rather than an unintentional limitation - they thought it would make the gameplay more tactical/strategic, rather than just selecting all the units and mass assaulting everything. For the same reason they kept 9 for WC2 and 12 for SC.
i played warcraft 1 and 2 and loved it...everything after that didnt have the same feeling
skip to about 16:40 for cringe of the year moment, but other than that thank you so much for this. I've just seen the Warcraft movie and wanted to play the game. The controls just killed me in a second, because I've never played such an old RPG, so I let you play it and I can see the story. Thanks! :D
hehe :)
It's fascinating to see and hear how much Warcraft 1 resembles Warcraft 2, with the latter being very dear to me. I never played WC 1, which, after having seen this video, seems to be more rudimentary, mostly with regard to graphics, but the elements and the atmosphere are very similar. When I played WC 3, I was quite disappointed because much of the good old WC 2 atmosphere was gone. I wonder what WC 3 could have been like if it had been as close to WC 2 as WC 1 is, with better graphics and some slight improvements.
They don't want to make games as good and timeless as this, because they think then people won't buy new games.
123TauruZ321 Warcraft 3 is timeless
This could perhaps be the longest legit video on youtube.
:) Memories :) Thanks for this upload...
I love this warcraft III: Reforge
No one loves warcraft III: Reforged.
clearly you were too young when Warcraft come out... Warcraft use the same style of control system as Dune, that you need to lay foundation/road before you can expand your building space, and you need to assign unit with clear order instand of right click (BTW, Starcraft uses right click as move/attack command). You have to know and been play those old games to understand that this annoy system was the standard RTS control back at that days...
You are lucky that you have not yet running into those old RTS games that you can only give command to 1 unit at a time...
