Fantastic real-time tutorial! Tracey is a pro who knows how to PROPERLY use the e-file without damaging the natural nail. So the e-file is definitely an advantage here. However, sadly, there are a lot of nail techs out there who do not know how to use the e-file, or who are simply just not careful, and they end up damaging their client's nails. I am a cosmetology student and been this summer working in a salon and done many gel polish nails, my employer has only one bit for the removal, and I struggle to use it without burning or damaging my clients nails, I guess my employer should've trained me about how to do it correctly. We haven't filed polish off at school because we use Shellac there, and that's really easy and fast to soak off

I've been e-filing my sister's and nieces' gel polish off for years and they have no damage to their natural nails - in fact, their nails are stronger than they've ever been. It's frustrating at the spa where I work, because the other nail tech informs clients in front of me that the e-file is dangerous and only bad techs use it. So I feel stuck at work soaking off clients' nails because of all the misinformation my co-worker has spread. I only have a couple of clients who aren't too afraid to give it a try. The spa owner has told me it's my business, I can do what I want as long as I know what I'm doing, but the stigma is still too much for most clients there. Hopefully someday I'll convert some of them to the e-file!

Whatt! An acetone soak is imo wayyy more damaging!
But I do acrygel under the gel color, which I never fully file off, so no danger of touching the natural nail. It also never lifts, I love acrygel.
Or yea, as she said, a base you don't need to remove, like halo rubberbase I hear is quite good.
I use my e-file to remove my own gel polish. I’d much rather remove it that way than soaking it off. It takes a long time. And actually I feel the e-file does a better job.
I'm always trying to teach my clients that the efile will not hurt them because I leave that base coat on their nails just like Traci does. They never believe it until I start to remove and they say "Oh you are very gentle" So that comment right there answers everything, some techs feel they need to grind a fingernail like they are trying to make a dang canoe out of a log. In nails magazine there was an article about pricing and it wasn't what the going price was in the area, it was how much you charge per hour. You are actually charging for your time not the service (with add on's of course) which is where I think this video is going. One service shouldn't be cheaper than another if it takes the same amount of time. Thanks Young Nails for doing this video and pointing out your pricing strategy again. So important, I love it!! I took a 2 day boot camp with Celina Ryder at Light Elegance HQ last year and we were given a chemistry class with the owner/head chemist and he told us to never soak off because it damages the nails. After you soak off you scrape off the sludge, that causes fissures in the nail plate and the melted gel and acetone can get into your bloodstream. We all know someone who “had gel for years and all of a sudden can’t know” and that’s why. I never soaked off, even in school. My handfile did it faster than soaking off did. So now I add a layer of hard gel (acetone won’t penetrate hard gel anyway) and file color off every time. My file never hits the natural nail because of the barrier there.

I love to go in with an efile first to get rid of the topcoat and some of the colour, and then soak off the gel colour completely :)

@@youngnailsinc If I were to choose the method used, I'd go with e-filing, it's faster than soaking the Gel Polish off
I do the opposite. I soak for approximately 10 minutes then use the e file to gently remove the remainder.
I am pretty new to the efile and just do myself and my daughter. My daughter has naturally long nails and I just do gel polish on her. I have been filing off as much as I dare then wrapping. It works well especially if I put her hands on a heating pad. I basically get almost all of the color off one hand then wrap it and move on to the next hand. By the time I’m done filing and wrapping the second hand the first is ready to have everything pop off and be fully prepped.
I started using an E-file recently, I am so happy with the move! Tracey, I use the same cross-cut diamond bit, thanks to you, I am so impressed with how well it gets into the cuticle area without damaging the nail/cuticle.

I usually request a soak off because you really don't know how skilled someone is with an efile especially if you're trying a new salon. Most pictures are of completed work and you can't tell what kind of damage is underneath

Well that depends on the nail type... I have clients who can have Gelpolish for 5weeks shorten it themselves and nothing lifts ever... However people like myself.... I apply it all the same but if i file anything off my free edge so it's not capped anymore my polish will lift within days... Because my nails are very dry and move a lot when wet vs. Dry... So for me to have Gelpolish on for 3+weeks capping is a MUST... Since we don't know with new clients how their nails behave i would always recommend to cap because if it chipsboff after a few days and what tracy did would definitely chip of my nails.... I'd be very pissed for paying 60 for that 🙄

Wipe with alcohol and you'll see the gel is matte looking while the nail is more chalky

Man! It is very difficult to find nail tech who will be willing to put in the time and work on your nails.
See I feel the opposite! I’m a Tech who is very averse to rushing services, but a lot of clients today are hurry, hurry, hurry! AND many will also expect elaborately decorated nails, while you’re rushing. 😒🙄
There is for sure a happy medium between being "rushed" and being efficient and creating quality nails in a timely manor. Most clients now days are in a hurry themselves and don't have time to spend hours in salon, but at the same time want quality nails. That's what we hope to show in this series

And a fine sanding band to “prep”. But yes, I have been using the efile for YEARS. And with proper training it saves time! Hands down!

What about the soak off method, they didn’t remove it after 15 min, like they said in the beginning. Seems like a lot leans towards just electric file and wasn’t really a comparison
Right we wanted to demonstrate that you can remove and reapply within the time it would take to soak the other.
This is such a helpful video. I did my first gel polish change this past weekend & learned a lot as I went. I did want to know what is the bit that Traci is using before switching to the medium band? I rewound but couldn't find where it was mentioned.
All i can say is thank you thank you thank you 😊. I always hand filed most then wrapped with acetone gel polish and slick pour removal . NOT ANYMORE! Woohoo… did them today in 23 min and that was 2 designs and rebooking. And her nails were in better condition after efile then soaked! Thank you again. Can’t wait for my new efile to come.

This opened my eyes, I thought E-file was for hard gel only. I was soaking and booking more than 1h!. Just ordered one online to give it a try. I do nails for extra income and go mobile, always trying to be more efficient.
No way, we use the efile for about 99.9% of the service
in nail school i learned that you should use the e file or file the gel polish off the natural nail & use acetone for acrylic or dip powder manicures only!! i agree that filing the gel polish off is much easier than using acetone.

Do i always Need to use a protein bomb if I electric file ? If so which one do you recommend?
So if you file down to the clear gel is it ok to start a new set over that with protein bond and more base coat? I assume no
I mean even hand filing the gel polish is faster than soaking off. Plus soaking my fingers in acetone for so long burns my skin and I can't do anything during the process because my fingers are all there. I only use acetone to remove the oils from my nails before primer.

Some of the walk-in nail salons in and around my town are charging $15-$20 a gel polish services alone. And, coming into this industry. This is a crazy low amount. I see my business a lot like Tracey does. Charge accordantly and to your worth.
I haven’t added only gel polish services to my services because of what other people are charging. I have it with my Manicure services, but seeing and hearing Tracey talk about it. I can see that it can be a real money maker, with it being such a quick service. So will definitely add it in.
And with “time”, a walk-in client asked me how long would it take to do her nails? Overlay. I said 1.5 hours as I’m still training and perfecting my skills. She said she wanted them done in 1 hour tops. I took the challenge and did her full, good looking overlay in 45 minutes. Was over the moon with myself.
What was Tracey charging for overlays and manicure services? I already have my pricing, but I feel as thought I’m not charging the right price to cover all my expenses.

When I go to the salon, I always get lifting of my gel polish. Doesn't matter where I go. I can watch the nail tech like a hawk, making sure the nail bed is clean, cuticles trimmed, etc. etc. It doesn't seem to matter what brand of gel polish either. If there is lifting, would you just soak everything off and start over again?
If using protein bond, and proper prep there is no chance of separating. If there is separating it will need to be removed but we would recommend filing off rather than soaking.

This is covered a lot of questions for me, thank you! The only thing not included here was cuticle removal. I'm slow at that, so I prep the nail first in hopes the efile removed some cuticle for me and then go in with the nippers before polishing. Her cuticles were clean here but do you have any advice for this?
We don't really suggest excessive cuticle work. Of course if there is something hanging or clearly needing attention. Otherwise a quick push back and routine maintenance with the efile is plenty sufficient
Soaking works quickly if you use hand-warming gloves. Set on HIGH, acetone wrap fingers -- and here in OHIO clients appreciate the warming gloves in the winter months!! Also puts a lil extra comfort during a manicure process.

Wow! I charge $25 for a removal and reapplication. That’s minimal gel polish, takes me an hour. Maybe I should start charging more 😢

Michelle Middleton you’re still doing the work to remove it. It’s your time. So yeah I’d still charge for the removal even if you’re doing it with the E-File
I know this is a old post but hopefully someone can answer, when you remove the gel colour with drill and get to base what do we need to do with the base? Do we need to remove the base with a file then start the gel process again eg add base colour etc?
No you can stop at the base.. reapply a thin layer and go back into color. The base will protect the natural nail, hope this helps!!

I’m a cosmetology student and I’m so terrified of the efile at this point because my nails have been damaged so badly from my ex nail tech using it to take it off. I have naturally super strong nails and veryyyy long nails beds, but since she removed it with the drill, they were so thin I could feel water through them when washing my hands and my smile line got super low as the line started to blend in with the pink. Most nail techs don’t know how to use this properly. How can I figure out if a nail tech knows how to use it?

Is it possible to use nail tips with only gel polish as a builder? People have told me to use builder gel but I've never worked with it before and I'm a little scared of it. Also I'm not a nail tech I don't have a license I'm curious just for my own hands.

When prepping the nails for a removal and reapplication, does it matter when you do the prep? I always remove the gel polish first and then do the whole prep and cut the cuticles, and then reapply gel.
That sounds correct
You said that you’re doing a darker color so it doesn’t matter if you see a little bit of the old color on the nail what happens if she wanted a lighter color and you see some little bit of the old Polish what would you do in that case?
You would then completely remove all of the old product since you would know before starting what color your client is choosing.

Tracy says she's using a "soft fine safety bit" with the removal.
Why would course or medium bit be recommended instead?
If your gel polish application is thicker or you have a structured gel manicure underneath, you could use the Safety Bit Coarse to take down the bulk quicker. Just make sure that as soon as you break through the color, you avoid going over that area with the Safety Bit so you don't file the natural nail surface. You can also use the Coarse bit when working over an acrylic or hard gel to take down bulk.

Yes, we clip the extension down with finger nail clippers then file from there

It takes me 30 min but i was filling most the gel off then soaking. So soaking was only about 5 min. Makes no since I mine as well keep filling lol. If we don’t remove the base after a couple times won’t it bulk or lift?? And sometimes as I’m polishing before hand goes in light sometimes polish is pulled back from tip of nail and i did protein bond…why ?
Shouldn't become bulky or lift as long as prep is correct. The left over base really just adds strength overtime. Shrinking from the sides usually indicates the surface is too smooth to hold the gel in place.
Ok thanks. It’s before goes into the light. Just the very tip looks like i need to cap it… does that explain better lol. Oh i used your 150 hand file maybe to rough? It hardly ever happens but boggles me when it does lol
nope not too rough, but know exactly what you mean, the gel pulls away from the edges when its applied. That is an indication the surface of the nail is too smooth as in it needs to be roughed up a little more prior to application so it give the gel something to hold on to.
There should be more product provided for the base.but I’ll still try it.
Hi i’m wondering if you would ever fill gel polish or just file off the color, add base, and new color with top coat?
You could fill it, but you would still want to use Base under the color. Having the Base in between the layers of color may make the color look uneven or having less layers of the color at the cuticle area can also make the color look inconsistent. For the best consistent color results, we do recommend removing at least most of the color and re-applying.
I like color on my tips so filing after you polish would not work for me.
I need to get booked into your efile course, it takes me 1hr to soak and reapply gel polish. I'm in N.Ire when you said $60 I was 😲 . Took me a min to realise you can charge more where you are. I'm £15 for polish.

With maniQ it is not necessary especially since we used protein bond that will eliminate any chipping.

I’m a home user. Since your safety bits are right or left handed, would I have to buy both so that I’ll be able to use it with my left hand to remove on the right (and vice versa) or am I able to use one bit with both hands?
It will work better if you have both, but you can use just one, it just won't cut as well with your non dominant hand. You may find yourself using more pressure which can burn the nail as well.

How often should you replace your bit? I work 5 days a week 5 to 10 clients a day?
Honestly at that rate I'd recommend at least every 2 weeks, it may seem a little expensive but you will be saving time with new bits which will in turn make you more money. 👍🏽
I use cnd shellac and soak them in a cute bowl of acetone for 3 minutes it comes right off. The foils are a waste of time. In this case 3 minutes for soaking is way faster then efiling. I also realize some gel polishes take longer then others to soak off. Gelish and opi take forever and for those brands i efile. Thanks for the cool comparison

Tracey. I agree that gel polish should be considered an enhancement and should be priced accordingly because of the steps required to prep and remove the product. But $60.00? ... You know, gel polish manufacturers did not bring that to the professionals when this product was introduced. They just said what you could charge for it; and how easy it was to remove it. I totally agree on use of the e-file removal

Both the hand file and efile can be used safely if the tech is trained well and using them properly. Additionally, filing by hand or efile, can cause damage if you are using too much pressure or using incorrect angles. It all goes back to using proper techniques.
Why customers at the place I work, many of them say it burns, and their nails are very thin. Why is that ? And it burnt even more with the new file bit.

The nails are not filed to reshape or change the lenght, so its faster. I still file the top and then soak off the rest. I've seen works of other nail techs that file everything and they do serious damage to the natural nail that takes quite a long time to recover.
Of course, all about education and knowing how to properly use your tools. Remember it's not the tools that do the damage it's the fools

it happens sometimes..I used clean cut bit around the cuticle

That will result in lifting, so try to avoid before curing but if it does happen a little touch up with the cross cut bit should take care of it

Why are you not wrapping the free edge?
As long as you apply Protein Bond, you do not need to cap the free edge. Our gel polish will adhere well to the filed surface with Protein Bond. Some people like to cap the edges for a more finished look, but it is not necessary.
Bought a YN kit and your beautiful colored acrylic. My problem is that I want to redo my nails every week 😂 and because I like to use your colored acrylic I’m having to soak off my nails every time I redo them and it’s taking me forever do you have a video on soaking off acrylic.
