  • NEED SOME INSPIRATION FOR THIS SEASONS FLYING DESTINATIONS? Look no further here you will find my comprehensive list of some of the most outstanding grass strips here in southern England.
Just because my channel name is Short Field doesn't mean I don't visit longer strips and this time I've got 10 stunning hidden gems for you and being that bit longer anyone can and MUST visit this year.
With full airstrip details and approach videos you can get a feel for the area and strip layout before you visit.
    This time we visit:
    2:17 Ranksborough Farm
    4:02 Blooms Farm
    5:45 West Tisted
    6:48 Ringstead
    8:21 Shackelwell
    9:41 Draycot
    11:24 The Firs Farm
    12:39 Brimpton
    13:55 Farway Common
    15:55 Saltby
Also if you are into Microsoft flight simulator they're all on there (even if not listed) and it's great fun trying to land on them in the sim, so, why not give them a go?
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of North Weald EGSX about 12 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is know under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
    #backcountryflying #generalaviation #pilotlife
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Thank you so much.

Definitely some abbreviations we don’t use here in the video. Eg sep single engine piston?

    • @ShortField
      @ShortField  Год назад +8

Hey Glenn, I actually forget to include the abbreviations at the beginning so really sorry, SEP you are correct, Single Engine Piston, PPR is Prior Permission Required most of the airfields in the UK require you to call up first and we use PPR to indicate that. MATZ is Military Military Aerodrome Traffic Zone same as ATZ or Aerodrome Traffic Zone at a civvy airfield except the dimensions are different. I think that's all there is in this video but I'll pin your comment for others. Thanks buddy.

Brilliant video. I'm a PPL student, coming to the end of my training, and these strips are really tempting. While some of your videos make me think "nah, not in this lifetime", this one gives me faith that not all farm strips are likely to result in unpleasant outcomes for an inexperienced pilot! 😂

Love these top ten videos Terry, thank you.👍✌️😊😊
Some of the grass strips I flew into with dad were very basic and very hairy - and that was pre internet days and some didn't even have a windsock - all very seat of the pants🤔😄😄👍✌️😳
I like the look of Rutland, my ancient ancestors held sway there for awhile😄, I wouldn't mind exploring there one day🤔✌️👍😊
I know Draycott well, dad was based there for several years and was friends with Fred (the original owner) when his boss used to fly in there (mid to late 1960s). Used to be a very basic but fun set up - a few stories to tell😄 There's a farm strip across the road too. Back in the day from Draycott to Thruxton all MATZ and "not above 1000'-1500' '' We used to fly from Lechlade too in a similar vein - Eg three or so fields from RAF (USAF) Fairford.
At Draycott there used to be a X Wind Rwy (although I've never used it). And yes that dip caught a fair few out - especially those that needed all of the rwy Eg twins etc.😳😄😄 We landed back one day to see funny marks in the crops, someone had ground looped a taildragger 😳 We landed back another time and in broad daylight a crop glyph of the Tree of Life had appeared within 1.5 hours, it was massive! ⚡😱👽🛸

+1 for West Tisted. Just one other advisory though: there is a microlight strip 3.4 km to the NE (Colemore Common), which puts it 700m to the left of the extended centerline of 23. The Angel pub is nice and about a 1 mile walk.

For the sake of complete accuracy, you don't need to be talking to the controller to enter a MATZ, although it is definitely advised. You only NEED to be talking to them if you enter the ATZ.

    • @ShortField

I would always request penetration (oooh arhh) when crossing a MATZ regardless, I don't fancy my chances against a Typhoon. It may not be mandatory but it is certainly courteous and good airmanship. Thanks for the watch and comment Richard.
