it was having that speech in front of the real navy seals that caused Biehn to freeze up.. to make matters worse - michael bay lost his shit and started screaming his lines at him off camera like a drill sergeant and Biehn was just repeating them. it was humiliating.

@@jp3813 And was Hummel in control the whole time? They were domestic terrorists, no longer a military unit - Hummel wouldn't have killed them but clearly a good portion of his men were rouge, he couldn't even command them to cease firing.
This movie has somehow been forgotten and it's a travesty! It just is so great, the action, the music, and Connery basically playing Bond himself 30 years later is just an added touch :D
You'll never convince me that The Rock isn't the last official Connery James Bond film. It literally all adds up if you watch the video thst explains it on RUclips from a few years ago. It ALL ADDS UP
How is it forgotten when this has been requested for movie reactions many times? It's even part of the Nicolas Cage 90s action trilogy (Con Air & Face/Off), and is widely considered as Michael Bay's best film.
Fun fact: Nicholas Cage always wanted to work with Sean Connery. Connery agreed to the film because he found out Cage would be in it and he was impressed with Leaving Las Vegas.
I love that part at the end too when Goodspeed says Mason was vaporized, and the other guy says “ poor bastard,” with a wry smile.. I always love those knowing the score moments..
The bar is low, but this is Michael Bay's best by a mile. A masterclass in action moviemaking. Con Air and Face/Off complete the Nic Cage 90s action holy trinity.
This and to a lesser degree Armageddon for me. Michael Bay is about entertainment rather than logic - a true popcorn director. Full-speed sci-fi like Armageddon was something special when it came out. Again, it is a dumb action movie, but it has more heart than other movies (like for example the extremely overrated Mad Max: Fury Road). The Rock is his best well rounded movie. Bad Boys were fine movies, but really nothing we hadn't seen before. Haven't seen 13 Hours yet, so can't comment on that. I guess it is worth a watch? Is it pure eye-candy or does it also have heart?
@@fastertove "but it has more heart than other movies" Armageddon vs Deep Impact. Lotta people might've chose Deep Impact back in the day but after a few years or a decade plus Armageddon does standout more because it was more entertaining.
@@jayeisenhardt1337 I know, I've seen Deep Impact a couple of times back when it was new, but I can't really remember much about it. It didn't leave a lasting impression for some reason, which is a little weird since I'm usually a fan of sci-fi and the space theme - that includes the slow pasted ones like Moon and 2010... Might simply be due to how they marketed the movies here. Or me being a teen at the time.
This is hands down one of the best action films of all time. The way this script flows in the various action beats is near perfect. Sean Connery, Nic Cage, and Ed Harris are great in their roles, not to mention a prime Vanessa Marcil and Michael Biehn. Of course, Hans Zimmer hits the score out of the park.
Love Zimmer but Harry Gregson-Williams and Nick Glennie-Smith helped make it the masterpiece it is. Zimmer did The Peacemaker score not long after this and it was incredibly meh.
One of my favourite films ever. Nicolas Cage at his most restrained, with the possible exception of The Family Man, Connery at his most Connery and Ed Harris being his best self. And that supporting cast, David Morse, Michael Biehn, John C McGinley, Danny Nucci, John Spencer... its just so awesome
I agree with your take on Nicolas Cage. Here he is Stanley, the young Nic Cage version of a man who is normally confident in his line of work. Yet he is vulnerable as he learns he is is going to be a father and is then thrown into the kind of mission he has little experience in. Stanley also shows his decency as he works with the larger than life Mason played by Sean Connery. I think Stanley is one of Cage's most appealing performances as an action hero.
One of the best action movies of the 90s, one of the best ever. Also, one of Nick Cage’s best. This came out when I was in high school and I joined the Air Force shortly after. We would watch this every weekend.
this is Michael Bay's masterpiece Imo, it also seems to be like an epilogue to Sean Connery's portrayal of 007 if you think about it, he was a secret agent working for the Brits got discovered and thrown into jail, anyways its always been a pleasure of mine, this movie is just so fun! Both Nick Cage and Connery have soooo much chemistry together.
Bob (park ranger) : [while in a cell on Alcatraz] I'm not allowed to carry a gun! Female Tourist : Oh you're not allowed to carry a gun? I got a goddamned gun! If I'd'a known this was gonna happen, I'd'a brought my mother-fuckin' gun! Help!
Best part of this reaction (for me) was at 40:00 (40:04) when Cassie protects Carly, Cassie using her hand to shield Carly from seeing the "Rocket Man" impaled from his fall as she says "Don't look!" and they both go "OHHHH" together in unison with Carly giving us the PIB tag line; "Oh my gosh!". LOL! Loved that so much!
I've always loved how how this movie, without ever saying it, implies that Connery's character in this IS a version of James Bond. It's great that he had so much panache and secret agent "street cred" that just being in the movie implies this whole long great back story for the viewer to lock in to the story. If you've got it, use it I guess? FWIW....
ed harris is really something else, I can't imagine anyone else playing his character, he has such an intensity and purpose, he really gets in character, and of course nick cage and connery are fantastic as usual and have such charisma in everything they do, michael bay has had his moments, definitely his best film
IMHO Sean Connery, Ed Harris and Nicholas Cage were perfectly casted for this great action movie. Please consider checking out "Family Man" with Nick Cage; it's one of my all-time favorite movies!
"Family Man" was a great movie. I own the DVD but have not seen that movie since the Theater I don't think. (I shall watch it) Would love to see you two react to or just watch it and I believe you will enjoy it if you do.
If you want another great but underrated Connery action movie where he has the fun expert/mentor dynamic but with a lady, I highly recommend "Entrapment" with Catherine Zeta Jones💜💜💜
It totally fits the Connery Bond timeline, too! Imagine if the whole shared cinematic universe thing had been big around the end of the 90s, we could’ve seen multiple Bonds joining in to save the world from an epic threat! Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan all at once! Mass hysteria!
@@mightyrobot42 Very true, but we can get around it by saying that only the “Bond” persona was Navy. Mason himself was Army before he joined MI6 and became James Bond (that must’ve rankled a bit, but anything for Queen and Country!). When he got caught, he gave his real name and rank and branch of service. Really starting to stretch the concept there, but it’s fun to play with it!
@@mightyrobot42 It does fit the Connery Bond Timeline quite well. go check the video out from Pentex Productions "The Rock is DEFINITELY a James Bond Movie"
I put this movie at the end of my Bond films. No matter how many Bonds they serve up between now and the when they decide to quit making them, The Rock will always be my send-off to the character. I had heard that Connery told the production co0mpany that he intended to play the character of Mason as an old Bond and it worked magnificently! It is rare when a chracter gets such a colossal send-off.
Whether you're good it or not, Sean Connery is -- hands down -- one of the MOST fun impressions to do. I love that it took y'all hearing about 4 of his dialogue lines to start.
Mid 80s and 90s had some of the best action movies ever made. They had this perfect blend of campy action and seriousness at same time. They knew what they were doing and just made to be just fun and adrenaline rushed. So many good movies to check out if you enjoyed this, Con Air is another Nicholas Cage master piece that I think will love the good guy story. Also The Rock one of the best sound tracks.
Gotta include the early 80s to that era due to the likes of First Blood, Conan the Barbarian, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Road Warrior, Escape from New York, 48 Hrs, Project A, etc...
They got worse when studios pushed for tamer PG-13 action movies so they could get kids and families in the theater as well. Old 80s/90s action movies would always have that one scene with a boob flash. Miss those days lol.
@@evanshall There are a number of great PG-13 action movies: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, GoldenEye, The Fugitive, The Mask of Zorro, The Fifth Element, The Mummy (1999), Master and Commander, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, many Jackie Chan films, etc...
I just remember watching this with my nain (grandmother) she loved Sean Connery and loved Ed Harris as well I remember watching it on vhs as well fun times thank you for reminding me about these times❤
30:57 "That's Indiana Jones style... Yeah, I was thinking Snow White & the 7 Dwarves, but that too." You ladies always have some historical line that I will always remember every time I think of a movie after watching your reactions & I love it.
I probably laughed more at Carly's response than I should have, love the commentary these two contribute. I'll never be able to watch this movie again without laughing at that scene lol
This is in my humble opinion THE best action movie of all time. It has everything - amazing actors, one of the best soundtracks of all time, good pace, just the right amount of humour and tension, and of course great and over the top action scenes.
I was lucky enough to stay on Alcatraz overnight as a Boy Scout back in the early 90s. We stayed on the first floor of Cell Block D, the area where Cage and Connery are kept in the scene at around 34:52. Mine was the 2nd or 3rd cell from the far left corner. I also live about an hour away from San Francisco, and go there to hike whenever I have free time. So whenever they use the city in movies, I always go back and see what details, inaccuracies, etc. I can find. The Rock is one of my favorite 90's action movies, so I've had plenty of opportunities to go through it in detail. About half of that car chase doesn't even take place in San Francisco (those parts are split between Los Angeles and San Pedro), and what does involves some awkward backtracking and going in the opposite directions what what's being described. They were never even once on California Street. I mentioned that in the live chat when this video premiered, and someone made fun of me for analyzing a fictional car chase. So I'll reiterate what I said there: There's a 1968 movie called Bullitt that starred Steve McQueen and featured a famous car chase in San Francisco, and with real driving stunts (and in one case improvised) done by McQueen itself. It was the first car chase of its kind in films, iconic, and set a high standard that most others have only come close to reaching. It may not have been a flashy spectacle like The Rock, but it was far more dangerous, and its continuity holds up when mapped out. The only thing that makes sense in The Rock's car chase is that Connery to drive from cable car explosion at Jones & Pacific Avenues on Russian Hill to the Palace of Fine Arts in only a few minutes. Other notes: Stenson Drive doesn't exist in San Francisco. Jade's house is on West 37th Street in San Pedro. The FBI mobile command center is shown to be situated at a warehouse on Pier 39. In reality, Pier 39 is a heavily developed shopping center and tourist trap in Fisherman's Wharf. Judging by the camera perspective and the layout of San Francisco's piers, those establishing shots were taken on Pier 23, looking southeast (as in, opposite direction from Alcatraz) towards the Bay Bridge. You can see Piers 19, 17, 15, and 9, with the distinctive Pier 7 walkway jutting out a little further than the others in the distance. Given that Pier 19 was converted from a warehouse to a parking garage, it's most likely the place where the command center scenes were really filmed. Also, Pier 17 was recently made the location of the Swiss consulate, and the Exploratorium was relocated to the renovated Pier 15 in 2013. Also, the stadium shown in the missile launch was actually Candlestick Park, which was far south. The Oakland Coliseum is to the east and relatively close to Alcatraz.
While you predicted Connery/bond would be the SAS operative. There is actually some fan theories that this actually was written as Connery was Bond, the timeline of his backstory would even fit with events from the bond films he was in.
Excellent reaction! I just love the two of you together. I'm surprised you didn't recognize Michael Biehn, who played Commander Anderson in this movie as playing Reese in The Terminator who turned out to be John Conner's father of course. The Rock had such great character actors in it. William Forsythe, David Morse, Gregory Sproleder, John C. McGinley, John Spencer, and Tony Todd. I can't wait for your next reaction. I remember watching this in theaters when it first came out, and I knew this film was an iconic movie experience. You can feel the energy in theater the audience enjoying the ride of this film. They don’t make films like this anymore, unless you have a remnant figure from that era like Tom Cruise.

Yes! You finally got to this one! One of my favorites of all time and one of Zimmer's best soundtracks IMO (and that says a lot). So many great lines in this movie and a story that really makes the viewer to challenge their pre-conceptions of who the 'good guys' and 'bad guys' are.
The rock, damn, what a fun action movie. This was in fact THE movie that made me fall in love with Hanz Zimmer music and to think I was just a clueless teenager at the time. I doubt he was even popular at the time and yet that effortless epic journey of a soundtrack immediately gripped me to the core, bedazzled me and stuck within me for all those years, after watching it in the cinemas. I was only made even happier when he has been recognized in the last decade, finally with all his music contributions in movie osts. What an absolute legend. And to think this was 27 years ago. Sean Connery is a literal god here, as he always was. Ed Harris performance was also beyond memorable.
This reaction is a great example of how a non-critically-acclaimed, non-award-winning FAN-FAVORITE can stand the test of time! The Rock is more than an action movie, it's a CLASSIC! AND SHOUT OUT TO FUZION FRENZY!!!
Loved Cage's character in this movie. "I meant it at the time" = hilarious. "It wasn't mine" :) Womack was so mad: "You wrecked half the city" I'm dying laughing.
This along with being an excellent movie, in my humble opinion has to be a top 3 all time duo reaction from you two throughout the entire movie. I so enjoyed watching and listening to you. Just two memorable examples off the top of my head. Cassie, ”Indiana Jones style” Carly “I was thinking Snow White and the 7 dwarfs but that too.” Then at the end when that man is skewered and you both look away but not long enough and you quickly cover her eyes telling her not to look. That was such a loving thing to do. This is from someone who cannot talk while being filmed and hates having her picture taken, you two are phenomenal on camera. Oh, I did a search you were correct, Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Despite being 66 years old at the time, Sean Connery did a good number of his own stunts in this movie. Including the scene where he and Nic Cage swam underwater with flames burning above them. In his youth Connery had been both a boxer and an aspiring bodybuilder and over the years, he kept in excellent shape.
Hope you recognized the guy playing the Navy SEAL commander. It's Michael Biehn, who played Kyle Reese in the Terminator (and Corporal Hicks in Aliens). He was a popular choice to play military characters in the late-80s and 90s. He's played a Navy SEAL in several other films, as well.
Sean Connery giving us his last "Bond" like performance, Nick Cage "rocks" , it . . The rest of the cast, director, soundtrack killed it. "IT was so well put together. . " yes Cassie, yes. . .

I think my favorite Sean Connery movie is still The Last Crusade with Harrison Ford. It had a good blend of humor and intelligence, adventure and emotion. The Hunt For Red October was also quite good and Connery was good in everything, like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Michael Bein was in this as the head of the seal team, sees like he always gets killed. He was in the first Terminator with Sara Connor and also the second Aliens movie with Sig Weaver and lately he was killed by the Mandalorian. @@jp3813 Thats not a negative. They're marines there to do a job and his men's lives would have been a risk even in surrender, and he didn't order them to start shooting either.
@@Lakrimoz I believe the military code is that surrender is allowed if certain death is the only alternative. Hummel was all about protecting soldiers' lives even during their theft of the rockets. Hence, he informed Anderson that none of his men have to die.
It ALL ADDS UP
@@brianmcmaster5112 That video explanation is SO GOOD. I'm with you 100%.
Ur so right
How is it forgotten when this has been requested for movie reactions many times? It's even part of the Nicolas Cage 90s action trilogy (Con Air & Face/Off), and is widely considered as Michael Bay's best film.
because it's a shit movie that makes no sense on any level. only the most braindead people would think this movie is good.
Fun fact: Nicholas Cage always wanted to work with Sean Connery. Connery agreed to the film because he found out Cage would be in it and he was impressed with Leaving Las Vegas.
Funt fact. Arnold turned down Cages role
@@SmokeyJonez24Arnold as a chemical geeky? Really?
I love that part at the end too when Goodspeed says Mason was vaporized, and the other guy says “ poor bastard,” with a wry smile.. I always love those knowing the score moments..
The bar is low, but this is Michael Bay's best by a mile. A masterclass in action moviemaking. Con Air and Face/Off complete the Nic Cage 90s action holy trinity.
I would argue 13 Hours is. By a mile.
Bad Boys for me
This and to a lesser degree Armageddon for me.
Of course, Hans Zimmer hits the score out of the park.
bay is the king of goofy action romps
Indeed
you said it brother
Love Zimmer but Harry Gregson-Williams and Nick Glennie-Smith helped make it the masterpiece it is. Zimmer did The Peacemaker score not long after this and it was incredibly meh.
+1 for Demolition Man! its such a fun movie and its crazy how well it has aged given today's culture...freakin EPIC
Don't tell them about the three seashells.
And Commando next….
Add another vote. Demolition Man is a great movie.
Yes i saw it on tv
Every time I watch it I wish Wesley Snipes would do movies again
"DONT LOOK!" - haha such a big sister move. Quality
In addition, Tony Todd, aka the Candyman.
Even Steve Harris with what one line that is made to stick.
Private McCoy: I'll take pleasure in guttin' you, boy!
Nick Cage was crushing it in the 90s, this, Con Air, Face/Off, all great action movies.
General hummel is one of the most sympathetic villains in an action film.
Ehh I’m a vet and he went a little off the deep end lol
@@SushiBandit28 Agreed. Even if he didn't intend to kill anyone he recruited a squad of psychos who would have.
this is Michael Bay's masterpiece Imo, it also seems to be like an epilogue to Sean Connery's portrayal of 007 if you think about it, he was a secret agent working for the Brits got discovered and thrown into jail, anyways its always been a pleasure of mine, this movie is just so fun! Both Nick Cage and Connery have soooo much chemistry together.
Hans Zimmer score is just outstanding. Great movie. One of my all time favourite

I noticed that too, it was sweet seeing her protect her sister on instinct.
The sweetest and cutest thing.
I was just gonna comment this lol. Highly amusing :D
For sure, makes wish there were more women like this in the world 🥰🥰
Absolutely! It was truly delightful to watch.
Sean Connery saying " Welcome to the Rock" was one of my favorite movie memories!!
Looks like he f**ked us captain."
"I knew it, that son of a b***h jumped ship."
"Welcome to the Rock!"
IMHO Sean Connery, Ed Harris and Nicholas Cage were perfectly casted for this great action movie.
Please consider checking out "Family Man" with Nick Cage; it's one of my all-time favorite movies!
👏Cassie and Carly would love that movie! Hope they haven't already seen it....
Michael Biehn too.
"Family Man" was a great movie. I own the DVD but have not seen that movie since the Theater I don't think. (I shall watch it) Would love to see you two react to or just watch it and I believe you will enjoy it if you do.
And Wild at Heart….
Raising Arizona
If you want another great but underrated Connery action movie where he has the fun expert/mentor dynamic but with a lady, I highly recommend "Entrapment" with Catherine Zeta Jones💜💜💜
Love "Entrapment" - what a great film!
And let's not forget " Hunt for Red October"!
I think the girls would love 'Entrapment'.
Entrapment is great. Catherine was in her prime then
I see now why this is seen as a lost/secret Bond film. Watching it that way, even if unintended at the time, makes this an even more enjoyable film.
It was intended slyly
It totally fits the Connery Bond timeline, too! Imagine if the whole shared cinematic universe thing had been big around the end of the 90s, we could’ve seen multiple Bonds joining in to save the world from an epic threat! Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan all at once! Mass hysteria!
@@Daveyboy100880 Doesn't quite fit the Bond timeline. James Bond was a commander in the Royal Navy, but Mason is explicitly stated to be Army.
30:57 "Indiana Johnes style" - "Yeah, I was thinking more like Snow White and the seven dwarfs, but that too." 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I put this movie at the end of my Bond films.
This IS the film that made me a fan of Nic Cage and Ed Harris. Perfect casting!
If you like Ed Harris, his role in Just Cause shows another side.

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed your Sean Connery journey since the Hunt for Red October 🥰

Not sure if anyone commented or you guys noticed, but the SEAL team commander was played by Michael Biehn, aka: Johnny Ringo from Tombstone.
Great reaction ladies! Sean Connery is an icon! Steven Speilberg once said there was no other actor who could ever have played Indiana Jones' Dad! 😁

I watched this in the big theater when I was 20...it was intense!
Bought it on VHS a year later...👍
Yes! You finally got to this one! One of my favorites of all time and one of Zimmer's best soundtracks IMO (and that says a lot). So many great lines in this movie and a story that really makes the viewer to challenge their pre-conceptions of who the 'good guys' and 'bad guys' are.
This and Crimson Tide, which also was scored by Zimmer.
I dunno why but cage and Connery seem like such an unlikely pairing but in this movie they just work so well together it’s amazing
He has made some awesome things. Just a shame he sometimes goes on autopilot.

Finally people are getting around to this movie 🍿 🎥 one of the best movies ever made. I saw this in theatres back in ‘96
