Generally speaking the skin color palette is used for more cartoonish kind of approach, like manga style drawing. But even tho, using the same skin palette limits you a lot. I'm recently moving from standard cel shading, to a mixture of cel shading and painting. So while I still use linearts, I try my best to mix it with detailed painting. But still keeping it simple ofc!
So there is nothing wrong with using a color preset, but if you want to do more like digital painting like Boro does, you should forget about color presets and do what Boro teaches us in this video.

Really liked how you went through the logic of how to actually think about the materials and, therefore, render the skin, especially in darker skin colors... It would be great to watch another BoroSchool where you paint the same character with different skin colors (human colors or scifi, idk) and lighting setups.

I love this tutorial, my dude! I had been struggling with trying to figure out how to adjust the different hues for different parts of the body and the logic behind these chanes. You helped me make my humans look more alive and less like porcelain dolls, thank you :D!
Also, if I may add from my own well of knowledge, someone with vitiligo (the condition where patches of skin lose pigment) will also be thinner and thus have higher contrast, have more subsurface scattering and become more red and pink when agitated, areas that are more pink like lips will still be more pink than the rest of the body, but nowhere near as saturated as with skin with melanin, it will burn in the sun and not tan (since tanning is when cells produce more melanin to help withe the extra sun exposure and skin effected by vitiligo won't have melanin) and not have as much green from hair because most hair will grow out as white (also without pigment), though a few strands might be lucky and produce some pigment. Any kind of birthmark effected by vitiligo will become a very desaturated orange and scar tissue seems to have a more pale purple than scar tissue on normal skin. I'm only going based on my own experience since I have vitiligo. Sorry if my interpretations are imperfect, but again, this is based on my own observations with my own condition.

The circles where they show you the colors the artist used are more or less used for Comic style art. Plus, comic creators use those simple colors because it's efficient. When drawing a comic you want your characters to look human but not realistic. That's because you don't have time. You have to draw 100 panels a week and the reader will probably just end up skimming through them in one minute, so why waste your precious time adding so many meticulous details to them?
Same thing with anime, everything is focused on efficiency and ease.
Anyways, I learned a lot from this video! Thanks!

Thanks for doing this! This is the sort of content artists should learn when thinking about painting flesh tones. I learned in school this way , but now I do tend to start with three simple distinct tones - light , midtone , & shadow. What I do from there is mix in other colors to each tonal area to mimic the look of living flesh, while not deviating from the tonal plan. I would actually recommend new painters to start simply , creating form first & then analyzing & improving color skills. It's better to keep painting , rather than not doing it because you feel your knowledge is incomplete , so new painters should not be discouraged!

I think it has to do with skin types a lot. Most pale/ivory skin has a lot of yellow, purple/blues and greens in them from shade to light source. Skinny people show more bone, veins (purple/blueish) and that's why too. People with pink/rosy skin have a lot of purples and reds. Maybe browns idk

This is the hardest part about painting skin. I love painting people in dark and moody lighting, but the problem is its difficult to take photographs in that light so many photographs use fake lighting which is not the effect I want, so its hard to find references. The skin tones look different and I don't know how different light sources affect the skin in different directions. I just play around with it until it looks right.

I loved exploring the intricacies of black and dark brown skins. You know how as a child you grab the white crayon to draw white skin, but eventually learn that white skin is more of a salmon/red/tan color? I was still in that mode when it came to darker skins. Black skin can be surprisingly purple. I think that the blue sky may greatly affect the ambient highlighting to make that happen. If you get ultra-black skin, it can get very unsaturated, too. Dark skinned individuals from India can have a very high saturation compared to shite or ultra-black skinned people also. So much to learn.

Christmas? Spending time with family? Naaah, there is a new Borodante's video! Btw I see a connection between this tutorial and your comment below Marco Bucci new video ;) (Stalker much... maybe not really, I like his "10 min to better painting" series).
I find it a little confusing when you painted that concrete candle with only one transition (in brightness), as if forgetting about all the "different light sources" thing. I mean I know what you're talking about, but I know your painting technique (at least your way of thinking about light and colors) for so long now and even though I learned a lot of new things today, I had a base of that knowledge. And I think that it could be confusing when someone is watching you painting skin "ok, so the shadowy areas of skin should be less saturated, because of the color of sky light" and then in your example you goes "just lower the brightness of color of the object". It is true in only white light and you didn't say that it works everywhere when the object is not translucent, but you could be more clear there.
But overall your video is very useful, I'm probably gonna watch it again and again every time I feel I need a better understanding of skin rendering. I still can't paint it right, but now I have an idea why (I didn't know where and how to put less saturated, darker colors of the skin, I knew it had to appear on the shadowy side but what with the more saturated darker colors?). I'm gonna try it out next time. Thanks, Borodante, really, you're my best (and kinda only...) teacher.

Very nice skin tone tutorial. Just a silly point though, you kinda got the candle a bit wrong. Candles that are lit show far more translucency near the top, and especially around the top edges where the material is thin, so even though it is a cylindrical shape, there is as much variation from the top to the middle, as there is from left to right. It's the same as when you have back lighting on ears and fingers but I'm 1000% sure you are familiar with that. I'm just saying for context.
