Ah this is the kind of thing that was really lacking when I was beginning, not knowing where to start, or what to start from. This kind of handholding approach you see more often in actually paid classes with a huge time alloted to it, and people starting out don't even know that it exists most of the time. A lot of channels talk about fundamentals on a high level, but don't dig in what it means to do them on a moment-to-moment basis for the markmaking process. I'm sure this is gonna be a godsend for a lot of people, so accessible on youtube. I apreciate all the effort put into the rhetoric, pacing and clarity as you go. nothing is left to be misinterpreted, but the foundation is there for everything to be expanded upon, for all skill levels. Amazing stuff Marco.

Tip for anyone trying this method out: don't forget to make the background layer light gray. A stark white bg will produce some unfortunate results in the color step since white + a color in the color layer equals white. That means your shading in the shadow layer will get color but the gaps will not.

As a self learner for many years, I can tell you that, this approach is the most effective and time-saving method for illustration! A lot of professional artists have kept it secret to the other learner. I read many issues of ImagineFX magazines, and no one really share this kind of approach, instead they just blur away the details and useful information. I am now really glad to learn this method finally properly, and it help me paint a great deal faster and keep my works consistent. Thank you, Marco, truly this is the most important tips for all the beginning artists on RUclips so far.

If you press "H" on the keyboard, the canvas will flip horizontally, but it's just a visual flip, not a transformative one. The advantage being you can flip back and forth very quickly, and you can still work as normal while flipped. *I think H is the default key. That's what mine is mapped to. In any case, the functionality is there.

This is EXACTLY what i was looking for!
It's so comprehensive with all the breakdowns and stages.
All the other tutorials are either too scatterbrained, talk about basics but obscure how to actually do things, or just talk about basics but assume you're on their level and that you're an art student or something. You can tell they don't actually care enough.

In CSP, if you go to View -> Rotate/Flip, there's an option to flip the canvas without it actually flipping any pixels. It just shows you the canvas flipped. This is more useful, because since it doesn't actually flip any pixels for real, it's instant, no matter how big or how painted on the canvas is.

Watching this is a nice refresher for the digital painting classes I took on art school. Luckily, my teachers are all working professionals and taught use about this and how clone layers and clipping masks save literal hours of time, because it breaks everything down into manageable chunks and it makes it easier to iterate and edit when a client/art director wants something changed. Judging by the comments and tutorial videos, it seems like this isn't shared for free a lot on RUclips.

Timestamp for layers, for those like me, who did not have any idea what the different layer TYPES are supposed to do.
0:50 Line art; Type: Multiply | Multiply layer highlights the richly dark line art.
1:26 Shadow; Type: Multiply | Again, the multiply type highlights the darkness of the shadow.
7:30 Ambient occlusion; Type: Multiply| Ambient occlusion refers to the deepest pockets/areas of shadows. No ambient light can find their way here.
8:49 Flat colours; Type: Colour mode | VERY IMPORTANT, in the colour mode layer type, it doesn't matter how dark or light your colour is (up and down the colour box). Only HUE and SATURATION matter here.
10:25 Lights; Type: Overlay | Overlay layer affects both light and dark, as well as colour!
15:53 Highlights, Type: Screen | This type of layer is the opposite of multiply, it highlights the lightness! Everything painted on here goes lighter.
5:20 TWO shadow types: cast and form!
14:34 Use tone curves to adjust dynamic range of layers.
There are other layers but these are the most basic, and for self-reference, I'm limiting my attention to these first. Also, thank you for pointing out that there are two kinds of shadow; CAST and FORM! This is one of the most important revelation for me!

Sadly a cannot press more than one like... It's such a great video man, thank you so much! I have always had troubles with coloring, now I'm sure it will be fine. Hope you will make more videos about digital coloring in the future

This is probably one of the most helpful videos on rendering paintings I've watched so far! Appreciate the content, but was wondering how do you make the brush for the hard-soft and flipped hard-soft for shadowing? It seems super useful for shading on the edge of surfaces without using the lasso tool.

Mind i share some of my tips in Clipstudio Mr. Marco. On 1:29 There's another technique/method i found beginners who are having hard times when it comes to color values on grayscale is they can try on adding the flat colors, hair, skin and clothe, just make sure to not over saturate them or else it won't look good and then create a correction layer for hue and saturation above that and drop their saturation to "0" to turn all the colors black/white/grey, or use the layer color (ctrl+B) and change the color to black, then create a new layer which you can work on as their shading. From there you can On/Off that correction layer when you're done shading. The rest is fixing shadow/lighting colors and paint over for corrections.

Marco Bucci 2 years ago: Here's why I don't separate grayscale from color.
Marco Bucci now: Here's how I separate grayscale from color.
I'm not calling you out, just think it would be interesting to hear why your workflow changed so significantly.

I don't think it has changed instead it is intended for the video. Breaking down every step makes it more clear and easy to understand, after all it is beginners friendly

@@neruck true, it's quite apparent that he doesn't work like this usually. In a professional setting, it's way faster to block in both the value and color at the same time

i dont think the point of this video was to show his specific workflow, just a workflow that makes things easier on people who might be new to painting and have major difficulty with colour and value right off the bat
