I absolutely hate that anytime these ships get any kind of love they get nerfed right back down to mediocrity or worse shortly after. People complaining about these ships being too strong legitimately have skill issues. (I'm not even good, pretty trash actually) The fact is capital killers need to exist. Taking away the ares damage is just not a good choice. Should they be maneuverable? only slightly Should they be thicc? yes Should they be fast? yes-ish they should be built to come in fast, deal a bunch of damage to large easy targets, then straight line away. Any smaller ship should fly circles around it and not get hit.
The problem is that to a novice player who can't dodge, any powerful ship feels cheap. This is made worse in Molasses Modes where your dodging options are limited because you have to always dodge in the opposite direction of the speedwalls.
Big guns should hurt if you get caught in front of them. There shouldn’t be any two ways about it. Will it suck to get caught on the receiving end, of course, but that by no means says they should get nerfed just to appease the feeling of the meta lite fighter lovers. When the “cap ship killer” can barely do the job it’s designed for, it isn’t balanced right. Should it be able to solo an Idris, no but it still shouldn’t feel like a mosquito buzzing around it needing a dozen just to do enough damage to be felt. To me the ion can’t even put out enough damage to drop a Connie shield let alone a capital. It is all but useless in its current state for sure
yeah, Aries as rolling tanks is where they should be. Bespoke heavy capital class single gun mount. Sounds like a main battle talk to me. So fly like a tank not a high performance formula 1 race car.
Honestly the charge feature can go away and they just have a low fire rate with alot of dps having it fire like the other m series cannons rn it's like a black powder cannon cool does alot of damage but takes too long to prep to be viable
It would be much cooler if I dont have to click and rape my mouse button to constantly fire smaller shots for chip dmg. Would be much cooler if it fires automatically when you hold the mouse and maybe have another mouse button to charge shots
The ion might be useful as a support ship in a multi-ship battle. It sits back taking shots at otherwise engaged targets. Up until armor prevents smaller sized rounds from penetrating, the ion is a paper weight
They are trying to create a battlefield dynamic that encourages flying as members in a fleet. 1 ion and 2 inferno would be a squadron within a fleet capable of soft killing large targets very quickly if focusing fire on crucial components after the ion neutralizes its shield It isnt either or, its how many ions do you need for the infernos to swoop in and shred.
I love the Inferno, for me it is Star Citizen's A-10 Wart Hog The only thing I would add is two under wing bomb mount points so we can also drop bombs with it 😀
If they leave them the way they are now. Only way to save them would to either upsize shield and give it more maneuverability. Or give them inferno no debuff to shooting shields that are a sizes less the size the gun and give ion a charge damage increase of 5x or 10x but make it so it slows you down or something.
All I remember seeing about either was they were there to pester cap ships by hitting weak points. Even the ion commercial showed it targeting subsystems. This I'm all fine with, but ion just isn't fun with the charge mechanic only
I've always have felt the Ion is better. You would expect the inferno to just chew through ships, but it almost feels like CIG has some hidden nerf in the code that only applies damage from 1 out of 3 hits, idk. With that said, they both need work. great vidi
The ion looks so unsatisfying to use, such a big laser cannon just for the blasts to look the same as a S2. There needs to me more effects from it leaving the barrel plus the barrel retracting into the ship a little like how the an94 or the baretta 50 cal do.
I was enjoying the Ion in 3.21-3.22, now it absolutely sucks. I wish they had the 3.22 gun and the new one available and let the user choose, like any other ship.
To be fair, the idea of any, single heavy fighter being realistically able to destroy a capital ship is absurd anyway. They should be able to take out the likes of a Connie or Corsair sized ship, for sure, but the whole point of the bigger ships is they trade off agility and other things to also be much harder to blow up.
Going against capital ships its expected you would be using multiple Ares. As well as other bombers like Eclipse or Tali. Once all the features are in the game I doubt even a lone Tali will kill something like an Idris, much less a Javelin. The term cap ship killer is just to designate what its primary targets are not that a single fighter or bomber is supposed to kill one solo.
The fact that 4 singe3's does half the damage of the ion, is telling. With a similar charge mechanic. Now you should be asking how many ships can fit 4 singe3's? Advantages of using singe3's: They don't overheat. They currently don't need any capacitor. They can be fit onto any number of ships including the F7A, which means you can get close damage on a similarly manuverable ship. The the Aries just cant kill anything. Which is why they are so low in the Tiers right now.
Inferno should have a cannon or ion should have a Laser-repeater. Instead of comparing them you choose what to take into a close combat dominated engagement system. A sniper rifle or a machinepistol. easy choice.
a freelancer was totally invincible against my inferno in 3.23. so i melted it right after i ran out of ammunition after shooting it for about 5 mins straight with 99% accuracy. could have been lag or low server fps. still melted it tho.
Oh man that’s just some super high intense dogfighting, glad to see the model has been reduced to sit around 50m and just dump as much dmg as you can with no struggle
I have had both Ares for a few years. They have both come and gone in the meta a couple times it feels like now. The Inferno has always been satisfying, even when they nerf it. The Ion looses my interest, even before this update. I melted the Ion and plan on keeping the Inferno. The Inferno isn't as good for sure, but I still enjoy the gatling.

Poor ION, it got some love with a small aim assist then its size 7 REPEATER got turned into a mass driver with a IQ of 75. Yet again out of the 2 the Inferno is the superior one, while the ION gets a participation trophy.
the whole bit about shields having a % of damage absorption + S3 shields now having 100k hp each + updated big ships health has made both Ares painfully mediocre in their role, the Inferno still has dogshit spread, meaning you need to be in the 250-500m of a S3 sized ship to be actually able to target the components, the firerate still is slow, and the ammo count shoulda have gone up instead of down, even if you play as its best, by kiting the target, waiting for it to enter NAV mod to disable their shields, dumping the missiles to luckily destroy one or two components (20 missiles required) and then finishing it with the main gun, still takes a ton of time, and thats focusing 100% of your capabilities to the main target, the escort is gonna rain fire on you while everything is happening Then the Ion got a massive nerf, sure the charge shot is nice, but the cap is basically in shambles now and the DPS is incredibily low, sure it can pop shields fasters, but you are shooting like 1 shot per 2-3 seconds, which is kinda insane, and on top of everything, they move and fly like a brick, and their components are so exposed that now a single fighter pass on your tap can permantly disable your shields, because S2 shields now suck major balls. I swear someone at CIG has a hateboner for this ship.
Ion now one shots Gladius.. And I say: Its not enough! Make it stronger! Try to hit a charge shot with 7FPS server.. and then it rewards u only with 6k dmg? common make it at least 30k
I said it once, I'll say it again.... The Ares Starfighters were released before their time. They have little to no experience on the pecking order of ship combat and how some ships will absolutely trump others if you don't play your cards right. The crazy thing about it is, fighters should be their weakness. But because players fly them wrong, they get popped like grapes... I hope that one day they stop trying to pamper players bad skills with nerfs to these two ships and just let a spade be a spade... Learn to fight against them or die. That's how it should be.

The Ares were my favorite ships when they came out and i purchased both. Every patch they get worse. 1 step forward and 2 back every single time. Their damage does not match the very limited role they are getting pushed further and further into. The ION dps is horrible for how finiky the canon is and how much it sucks at everything other than shooting big targets. I can gear my f8 or vanguard to do the same dps as both Ares but they can also do other roles. I still have both Ares in hopes they actually make them good but also ccus to other ships in case they dont. Most disappointing ship in yhe game.
