Satori Komeiji they're called tsukumogami, objects that come to life when they reach 100 years, and depending on how they have been treated during their lifetime they can be good or evil. The umbrella tsukumogami are called karakasa
***** yep, that's it! I mainly know them from Kogasa from Touhou Project, who is a karakasa... The 14th main game also goes in depth about tsukumogami. But yeah, I knew the 100 year old thing, but not about the "how they were treated", that's really interesting. I LOVE Japanese Folklore.
I'm going to go ahead and assume the whole "Goblin" thing was an awkward translation of "Yokai." (Lit, Ghost, Spirit, etc) Which is basically a word used to refer to most monsters from Japanese folklore. Rocky is a Tanuki, (Raccoon-Dog) which are considered magical in Japan, so thus, he is one. That's why the so called "Goblins" consist of such a wide variety of creatures.

Yeah, Natsume games are known to have bad translation. It's kind of a running gag - Or wanton incompetence, however you wanna look at it.
They do the same thing with Ayakashi, Tengu, and Oni.
"Spirits" or "Monsters" are usually a better translation...but jeez is it inconsistent.

Hm... that's what I thought too. Tanuki are considered Yokai. In fact I saw a lot of Yokai creatures in the game. Yeah, I understand that not a lot of Americans actually know what a Yokai is, but they could have at least did an explanation as to what the heck was going on!

My best childhood memory is me and my brother renting this game over the weekend and hiding in our basement playing it non stop until we finished it. At 9 years old I think this was the first coop gave I had played and may have been one of the first games I ever finished. Miss you bro.

This video is very nearly four years old... But Pocky and Rocky has a bad localization, really awful bad localization. The "Nopino Goblins" is a mistranslation and mis-localization of "Nippon Yōkai" which would be Japanese Spirits/Ghosts/Demons/Apparitions. All of those characters are traditional Yōkai/Ayakashi(they're the same thing) from Japanese folklore. For example the "mushroom head guy" is a Tofu-Kōzzō, a possessed block of tofu that generates a body with spiritual power. Rocky is a Tanuki, which is Japan's very real Raccoon-Dog animal. In this case one of the Yōkai versions of the real animal, since all native animals in Japan have yōkai counterparts. Rocky like all Tanuki-yōkai uses magically infused leaves as a means of casting spells. The most common variant is casting a charm on a leaf, then the Tanuki puts the leaf on it's head and that makes it look like a human, just with a big leaf on their head. The "Gorgonzola Goblins" are a mistranslation and mis-localization of "Gaijin Yōkai", which translates to "Foreign Spirits". These are mythical spirits and monsters from all over the world, primarily Europe and the Middle East. Like Jinn(aka Genies) and the like. Finally Pocky is a miko, or Japanese Shinto Shrine Maiden/Supplementary Priestess, she throws paper purification charms known as shikigami and uses a purification pole as her weapons. This is an example of her acting as what's known as an onmyōji. That is someone who uses onmyōdō to calm the spirits and break curses, basically a Shinto Exorcist, which is one of the duties of a miko.
Hope that helps anyone confused by the lore of this game.

It's kind of funny that a game that's filled up with Japanese mythological references has you turn into an angel when you die. Pocky (aka Sayo) must have been very theologically confused by this, considering she's a miko.
And by Stage 3, you got a Halloween theme stages and the Black Mantle looks like Castlevania Death w/o a skull.

This game holds up very well. Was always a ton of fun, and still is.
This reminded me so much of Touhou. Scroll shoot them up with Japanese folklore elements and crazy difficulty. You should try it, the last one they made (Touhou 14) is lots and lots of fun.

There's also a prequel called Kiki KaiKai, but it was originally released in Japan around 1986-1990 for various systems (including but not limited to: PC Engine/Turbografx-16, Arcade Cabinets, MSX computers, and the Famicom Disk System), with ports to the US coming in compilations like "Taito Legends 2" for PS2 and "Taito Legends: Power Up" for PSP. As far as I'm aware, the most recent port of Kiki KaiKai was to the Switch as part of the Arcade Archives series. Also yes, I know I'm 3 years late, but whatever.

Faizan Ali It's called touhou. It is a very fun, very difficult arcade style shoot-em-up. The reason I say it is arcade like is because it has an extra stage, good graphics, very addicting gameplay, and some of the GREATEST MUSIC TO EVER GRACE PLANET EARTH! I am sure you have heard some of the music, seen some of the charcters, or at least heard of it. Whilst it is very popular in japan, it's surprisingly semi-obscure in the states. Mostly because you need to rely on fan translations. If you can get a copy of one of the games, read one of the Mangas, or watch a bit of the anime, you would like it. But don't just take my word for it, ask some of the fans!

my inner weeb is telling me that this game had a few translation errors back in the day, seeing as the "goblins" are clearly Japanese Yokai, Pocky is a Shrine Maiden and Rocky appears to be a Tanuki
A lot of these enemies are actually based on Japanese folklore, like the living intimate objects and the stretchy neck woman, a lot of women in Japanese folklore end up being demons

At a guess, Nopino Goblin is a strange mistranslation for Yokai, a collection of strange monsters from Japan like the kappa, tanuki and whatever that umbrella thing is called.
This is the funniest intro that has ever been done on either show.
