Royal Thunder: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Lars Gotrich | May 30, 2017 - Mlny Parsonz's bluesy belt has been the grounding force of Royal Thunder's stirring hard-rock for almost a decade now, and on the band's third album, Wick, the songs all knot and unravel with psychedelic power. True to its name, volume and a small army of effects pedals play a large role in Royal Thunder. But what happens when we ask the Atlanta band to unplug that... thunder?
From the first note, you could hear Parsonz's sandpaper soul blasting down the hallways of NPR. Both "Anchor" and "April Showers" are slow-burners, built up from the complex guitar interplay of Josh Weaver and Will Fiore; the acoustic treatments here turn them into proggy blues hollers. The band closes with the emotionally wracked "Plans," featuring just Fiore and Parsonz. The performance is absolutely raw - Parsonz screams and beats her chest as her voice cracks, drawing power from a desperate vulnerability.

I find it totally criminal that Royal Thunder aren't massive! I make everyone I know sit and listen to their albums whenever I get the chance. There is so much to love about this band.
My deepest respect and thankfulness to the people who do the sound in tiny desk. Is always on point, amazing!
The sound is really amazing. Some of my favorite bands have better sound here then they do on their albums!
She is killer in concert, needs to be a headliner. Seriously.
If you like her, check out Two Minutes to Late Night with Royal Thunder. They do three covers (Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball, Kesha - Bastards and Motorhead (oh my god) - Ace of Spades) and she is absolutely insanely good in each one. *It's way more metal, fair warning*
Gwarsenio Hall approves this message
True Dat! I would never have heard of Royal Thunder if it wasn't for 2 Minutes to Late Night. Love all of the 2MTLN covers.
They also covered Cher's Believe together. It's amazing.
Its weird seeing her without a sharpie mustache LOL
Mlny Parsons sends chills down my spine, "You were never really innocent
But you were given the gun..."
She’s incredible
Can't understand the dislikes. I don't think she is screaming too loud, and I absolutely LOVED her raw voice.
Thank you
she's a powerhouse, not screaming thats singing, clean power
God her voice is amazing, this band needs to much more credit
I like their album sound but I'm more amazed how well it translates into an acoustic set. It really shows off that great songwriting underneath the distortion.
Good point. I've always believed that the stripped down version of a band shows their true talent. This was AMAZING.
Mel's voice gives me chills. Holy smokes, such power.
That was one of the most heartfelt, visceral performances I've seen in a long time. Loved these guys for awhile. This just reaffirmed that. Mlny is a siren, and wails with the best of them!
Best modern rock voice. If you disagree you're wrong.
Absolutely truth
I think it's rare to find an artist where not only can you hear where they are singing from, but also see it. Her voice expresses a particular message, a digested truth, but you can see the raw emotion rippling across her skin, only held back by the eccentric armor she chooses to wear. The things most of us fear to feel writhe like snakes in her chest.
lol
I agree deeply with this ❤️ saw them live last week and it was incredible. Such awesome people.
Saw them in a small room of about 20 people a few weeks ago. Amazing show.
James Walker I saw them a couple weeks ago at a small club. It was the night before they joined the CKY tour. Maybe 20 people in the room. It was fucking amazing. I'll never forget my " private show"
They were all very cool and easy to talk to after the show.
Man what an energy from this girl and the music so simple but so good
Absolutely incredible band in the studio and live. Really nice people too.
Everything about this woman is perfect. Such a powerful yet intimate voice, you can feel every word. One of my favourite songs ever is Royal Thunders' Time Machine. If you don't know it, please look it up right now. I guarantee you'll not regret it.
She brings the THUNDER! It's not just a clever name.
never heard of this band. but NPR did it again and intropduced me to some awesome new music. thanks NPR. these guys remind me of an early pearl jam.
I've loved this band for a good 7 years, awesome to see them do one of these
i fell in love with Mlny Parsonz last week when these guys did a an interview explaining what kind of gear they play. shes an amazing personality. never got around to listening to them then this comes XD
I've watched this so many times.
This is way off topic, but I could picture them being pirates
Their album CVI is perfect pirate ship music
Best tiny desk concert ever!!!! They killed it!!!!
The best. Saw them in reno nevada. Everyone one of the band members were top notch. Music makers. Love it
My good friend Jordan showed me this and it's incredible I'm enjoying this and relate
Really wonderful show thank you !
xx
Please get vulfpeck on here, they will kill this concert
I guaranteed they do their a capella version of back pocket
greate voice great band
Her voice speaks deeply to my soul
You can feel everything she is singing! I've got goosebumps on my goosebumps!
This band is Phenomenal live, like this subdued take, thanks NPR!
Yep better than the ppl they open for more often than not!!
O my god what a killer freakin Voice!
AMAZING VOCALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet. This is what I needed. Thank you.
I long ROYAL THUNDER. I can't wait to see them Sunday at dc9!!!!
she can belt very powerful in higher layers like Cornell. Very rare. love the guitar work also.
Pure unadulterated raw power 🤘🏼
Beautiful voice. Saludos desde Argentina
Thanks to internet that I hear this beautiful voice and powerful music. From Belarus))
I love her singing voice as well as he speaking voice. She always sounds good even when just speaking normally. Very memorable.
So good ! This show has brought me so much, thank you. honestly
Awesome Tiny desk, you guys kick ass Royal Thunder !
Can't help feeling that if you blend Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin, and add a dash of Bonnie Raitt, you get the singular gut-wrenching haunting power of Mlny Parsonz. Top it off with a crisp, balanced undiluted rock essence and you've landed yourself a pretty terrific and woefully undervalued setup. Wishing them all the very best. Many thanks for these fine few joyful minutes, Royal Thunder!
MOST UNDERRATED VOICE IN ROCK MUSIC SINCE EVER!
OMG .....that is what good music sounds!!
That girl is a treasure
Dude this is amazing! A true powerhouse performance ;) \M/
Great voice
Easily the best version of Plans, never really stood out to me on the record but man what a powerful song
“Plans” is the best song in the universe. I respectfully disagree. I can’t listen to it often as it’s heavy. Album version is awesome.
Fantastic in every way.
That third song tho, damn
When I was a little boy, my mother sang Janis Joplin songs to me, and I'll never forget it. And MLNY is Janis' reincarnation.
I love how fucking awkward and natural she looks.
To be fair she's usually behind a huge bass guitar and a microphone stand, haha. I imagine it's awkward just standing there.
My boss told me he was friends with the lead singer. I think this is really cool.
Love this!!! So cool ..
Ustedes son fantásticos que buena música hacen
Tremenda voz, de las mejores, con sentimiento, entregando todo en la canción.... Genial!
this lady has a voice! she has the soulful voice of Janis Joplin.
folkcore
IT's weird to me; they usually use the standard electronic instruments which make them sound definitely metal. This sound is awesome too.
2:23 If I wasn’t seeing it as well as hearing it, I’d have believed that was a vocal comp. Amazing stamina and tone, especially with no rock instrumentation to hide behind.
i like the shrek vest
i choked
dude xD
Janis would be proud this is so cool!
And this is why the world doesnt need autotune. Fantastic
Wow! What a voice!!!
Mlny power! Great singer
She makes my soul want to burst out of my chest and punch the first person it lays eyes on, just because it's freaked out from it's electrified royal awakening! Royal Thunder crushes souls. i love it
These guys are awesome, really digging their sound. Love Tiny Desk for discovering new killer acoustic bands
It's not an acoustic band😂
I like how she looks like a rock n roll version of Emma Stone
Dang she can belt it out it's like an ink convention Great Band
Lol I never thought I'd see this in my life hahaha. I'm a huuuuuge fan, since their first album dropped. I love this band and I love that they're getting this kind of exposure. I was surprised NPR is showcasing heavier bands now, but I love it ❤❤❤
Her voice is a beautiful blend of Pink and Janis Joplin
Pink wishes!!!@
and shes rocking that shrek vest, the levels of badassery are massive!
George R. R. Martin on the Guitar
No wonder he takes this long to push out books, when he's on tour
PLANS whoa!!!
Please get Manchester orchestra on here
Reupload? Whatever. I liked it again because RT rules.
Killer
vulfpeck would be killer

Awe man good ole Atlantan days at the Thunderbox and the Nigredo Lair with bands like Subrig Destroyer, Nigredo, Big Jesus, Oh Brother and of course Royal Thunder. Mel actually did a song with Nigredo at the Earl I think, and it’s on RUclips and the Sound is named Song of a Dying Planet and it builds up softly and and then it goes really hard.
Equal parts Robert Plant and Janis Joplin, with a splash of P.J.Harvey...
Why so many unlikes?
probs a handful of people that expect Royal Thunder to be much heavier. this is like wicked root of americana digging...like young Walker Evans portraits from the dust bowl type americana shit, but performed by people who can hang with a band like Cave In.
GIVE US CHANCE!
This. Is. Fucking. Amazing.
For plans, anyone know what key/tuning this is?
Dang. Found out about these folk from a rig rundown video maybe two days ago. Really interesting to hear them without the roaring gain. Thanks NPR, yer weirdly timely as well as all the other good stuff.
Janis Joplin reincarnated right here
Click the "thumbs up" below if you think we need a Francis and the Lights TDC!!
Mlny Parsonz is what you get if Janis Joplin had fronted Black Sabbath instead of Ozzy Osbourne.
Fucking power
Acoustic player is on a different level than us all
Name of song?
보컬 분이 개그우먼 김신영 닮으셨네요
I feel like Janis Joplin has been reincarnated.
She is a female Jack Black
Great music but I really do fear for her voice.
angry much?
that meatloaf?
Good instrumental and very good music, the only problem is that she's screaming too loud.
that is also called soul
I understand. Thanks for clarifying. I prefer screaming with more taste.
Tornike Sharia This is a rock band performing an acoustic set, and she's actually singing really well not even screaming at all.Go listen to their music and you'll see why she is singing the way she is. I think it's fantastic.
That's pure vocal power
