"Easier" isn't quite the right description, but deffintely very different. So all the time spent on in depth counters to counters to counters in grappling is largely wasted when time would have been better spent mastering a single escape/sweep. If you've ever grappled with good MMA guys they typically have a much smaller library of grappling techniques that they have drilled the shit out of.
@@mattyc7 Karo Parisyan published a book on Judo For MMA, and he absolutely pushes for drilling the crap out of a small number of techniques instead of trying to cast a wide net. When he first started training BJJ submissions for MMA, his coach had him do nothing but triangle chokes for weeks on end. They'd start him standing, on his back, on the other guy's back, etc etc and say, "Find the triangle from here." Better to know a thousand ways to apply one technique than a thousand techniques only applied one way.
Toney hadn't been a 'world class athlete' in about 10 years before he fought Couture, and even in his middleweight prime he was known for drinking coca cola between rounds in sparring and eating burgers in training, bizarre choice, the fat mess who fought Couture wasn't world class athlete Toney

Being an MMA fighter fighting in Japan in the late 90s & early 2000s must have been wild. You had a 50/50 shot of either facing a pro wrestler strongarmed into it by Antonio Inoki with only basic catch wrestling, or a juiced up psychopath who’d take your head off and then stomp it in. It was a simpler time, a better time.

An Olympic Judo Gold medalist (In Atlanta in 1996) who did great in MMA is Pawel Nastula. Well, his record isn't exactly spotless but PRIDE threw him to the lions immediately. His first MMA bout was against Rodrigo Nogueira, who was the number 2 HW at the time, only second to Fedor. And Nastula did surprisingly well, it was one of the first events I'd watched live, and the Polish Judoka really got me hooked. After losing that first fight against Big Nog, since he put on a vailliant effort PRIDE rewarded him by having him fight former UFC HW champ Josh Barnett, and then Sambo world champion Aleksander Emelianenko. Poor Nastula was outmatched, but still did his best in those fights; he especially did good against Barnett, considering the insane difference in experience. Gaber had some decent offense at first but had no defense, which left him open for a punch from Fujita resulting in a RD.1 KO loss.
