Its really interesting, i once heard a friend of mine from Wuhan who constantly emphasize that every restaurants has a slightly different way of making hot dry noodles( Wuhan style noodles called 热干面), so Wuhanese always argue about which restaurant makes the best hot dry noodle in the city, but in the end everyone just loves the noodles made by the restaurants closest to their home. Also, any restaurant making expensive hot dry noodles are considered tourist traps and not suggested by the locals, so i think you guys actually find a good one!

@@alanshannon3884 Wuhan could be named as Breakfast Capital of China. Just ask around and go to breakfast street where there're tons of vendors selling 100s of cheap breakfast of all kinds. They call them breakfast, yet many of them are actually sold throughout the day, such as Hot Dry Noodle. Alongside Hot Dry Noodle you just ate, one of the most iconic Wuhan breakfast items is called Dou Pi ( literally means tofu skin). It's a combination of small beef chops, fried glutinous rice, small pieces of bamboo tips and other pickles, covered with crispy bean-egg skin... Oh man, that is otherworldly tasty. It's almost unique, in a sense that you can't find it anywhere in the world, even other Chinese cities. Go try it.

Marco Polo and other traders most likely brought noodles and dumplings recipes back to Italy. When I was in rural Shanxi 20 years ago, I had the same reaction (despite being Chinese), the bowl of noodles was exactly spaghetti - tomato cuts + minced meat sauce. Makes sense if you look at entire Europe and only Italy eats "noodles" while most of East Asia consumes it for the longest time.

Also, Baoshan Street and its adjacent area is one heck of a historical portion of the history of working class Wuhanese life--the Hanzheng St a few blocks down, literally "Wuhan Main St", was the most prosperous wholesale market and one of the most pivotal reason why Wuhan remained a focal point of trade. The prices for food therefore reflect the kind of people that made Wuhan what it is historically (a trading post awash with workers and small vendors).

Obviously that was a restaurant not a street vendor. Noodle is a common food staple in China, eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's often served in full scale restaurants even the most upscale ones. Noodle is not considered a street food in China. If you consider noodle is just a street food then you're also saying spaghetti is also a street food, as we can see this style of noodle is where Italian spaghetti originated; you can go ask Marco Polo, he also said pizza and ice cream came from China!

It kind of irked me how a dish in Chinese is Italian Bolognese to them. Not everything has to be understood from a western culinary perspective. Chinese food has way long history than Italian food. It's almost insulting to say that a Chinese noodle dish looks like Italian, why not say Italian Bolognese looks like this dish. Who knows what Marco Polo has taken over to Italy from China if I want to compare it this way. I think an Italian would feel just as insulted if one were to say pasta looks like a copy of Chinese noodles.

You eat things like baozi, various noodles, beef patties, chicken patties, and so on in China. More like a snack, or something usually only eaten for breakfast.

I know you guys were just trying out stuff and didn't know what to expect. just know it's not unusual for people to order side dishes in addition to some carbohydrate filler. for example even if someone gets fried rice which could be eaten by itself, getting a side of boiled/stir-fried vegs is not atypical. it's a good way to try out different side dishes otherwise you'd just be eating one bowl type meals in china lol ;)

If you want to get the tiny bits in the bowl, put the bowl close to your mouth and use the chopsticks to shovel the bits into your mouth. No spoon necessary!

5yuan to us$, add decimal = 0.5, add 50% = 0.75 (little under), but as sales tax is included and not tipping, a very good deal for two people.
