If this build is related to the 500,000 km Troopy. Then it is a very expensive build. Paul and his team don't come cheap. I'm currently planing a build for a new double cab. And currently the cost is well over R200, 000 and there is more to come. My build is not for a Cape to Cairo need. I'm mostly in caravan camp sites. So needs are limited.

Best comment. Salesmen posing as teachers. Always remember this is about creating content. And perhaps more so about creating a culture of more. I’m on troopy #6 and have done some more elaborate ‘builds’. My current one is definitely the simplest and I would say the most versatile, not to mention lightest. I’d also put it up against any of these mega builds on a trip for liveability and usability at a fraction of the cost.

Listening to this reminds me of my Patrol build (still ongoing). My first priority was that I could easily access my electric skateboard and it had its own box so it was never buried. I had this plan of opening the side door behind the drivers door and pulling it out. I made the box it was positioned on an angle to match the door opening even made the box end on an angle to match. I decided I was ready to test it out one weekend. My vision all along was pulling up on a beach at low tide and getting it out with its pneumatic wheels, and having a spin. Problem was when I thought about testing it, it was going to be in Surfers Paradise with parallel parking and I wouldn’t be able to pull it without being on the street. I ended up making it accessible from the rear and remade it before ever testing it out. My point is real world living does involve suburbia and has to be taken into account.

Andrew I’m excited for you. I really like how you and Paul put so much thinking into the build. Your enthusiasm is so contagious I can’t wait to start my new build. I’m in the process of selling my Inkunzi overlander. I’ll be building my new Inkunzi as soon as my 2.8GD Auto arrives.
Some comments and ideas that came to mind while listening to you and Paul.
Water, heating and purification. I’m currently using a Hansen heater that allows both LPG and shore power use. It gives me additional 14lt of water carrying capacity but it is space hungry so would like to see what other options Paul has.
Water purification. I’d love to hear Paul’s ideas on this. I currently carry a hand operated ceramic purifier. It’s small and can only handle small quantities. One of my challenges is filtering before running the water into the tanks. I recently filled from a water point that was pumping directly from the Orange River. Unfortunately it brought a lot of silt with it which is near impossible to get out without removing the tanks. A basic filter would have helped. For this reason I carry 2x 20lt water Jerry cans solely for drinking. I find it easier to manage cross contamination.
Fuel. With my Single Cab LC79 Inkunzi I only ever needed additional fuel when driving to the banks of the Kunene through the Marienfluss. I only needed 2x 20lt on the roof which was great. Jerry Cans are cheap enough so I give it away when empty. I reduce the drag and the money I save on fuel more than pays for the cans.
Cooking. I use gas but have been thinking of getting a single induction cooker plus a single gas burner. For this I’m going to need a 3Kw inverter instead of the 1,2Kw. Like you I’m a Travel Buddy kind of guy BUT if I go with the 3Kw inverter I’m replacing the Travel Buddy with an air fryer. I’m also bolting down the Nespresso. It’s a nuisance to keep taking it from the bag.
Power. I’m going from 1x 100ah to 2x 100ah. I run the Cerbo GX simply because it interfaces with the tank levels and with the Mopeka Pro sensors I can even monitor my LPG as I only have 2x 3kg on board. I have 3x Badger solar panels glued to the roof. Normally they fit 2 at the factory but I don’t like running out of power.
I’m a short guy so getting my RV5 onto the roof is a challenge. I fitted a roller onto the back of the roof rack. Now I lay it on the roller and just slide it onto the roof rack. Fortunately I don’t use it much.
On the two spare wheel debate, I’m firmly in the one spare camp. I carry a tyre pliers wherever I go. I have only needed three spares ever. On the this trip I lost 2 tyres, fortunately I was able to buy a second hand tyre at a remote garage. I had a puncture on the second hand spare towards the end of the trip which I repaired on the road. In the event that I feel I want the insurance I carry an extra carcass.
Comfort. I really love your last build for that chill area you speak of. I have been thinking of getting a Ram laptop table. It can pack away easily taking up minimal space and you can adjust it exactly to your needs. Have you considered it? That mozzie net is a must, great idea.
I never thought that a basin would be a thing but now that I have 2 collapsible basins in a dedicated space with a dedicated water outlet I don’t know how I managed without it.
The main reason I don’t want 2 spares is for weight saving. So in that vain I would love to see the development of a winch carrier that fits behind the standard bumper. A bush bar adds a lot of weight that I rather do without.
Storage. On my previous Alu Innovations camper I used the space reserved for the second spare wheel to mount a cupboard onto the back. It housed my gas cylinder, tyre pump and a few other pesky items.
Good luck with the build. I don’t need to say enjoy it because you will no matter what I say 😃

Andrew, I must say. I really hate the idea of having to put up and pull down an Oztent RV4 tent from the roof of the troopy. We're about the same age, and I too have a work related back injury that I've had to retire from. But of course, this is Andrews build, not mine. The 30 second tent, or whatever it is, is just that. Then you have to prepare bedding and everything else that goes in it, which takes time. You'll also be sleeping on the ground which if you have a bad back (Arthritic) is a terrible idea. You could use the cushions from the troopy to sleep on but would recommend having the bottoms fitted with PVC to help prevent condensation coming through; Otherwise you'll be doubling up on mattresses which is bulky. Apart from the RTT which I love because of my back, we are now using single swags that have PVC bottoms on quick set up stretchers, ( I think by memory it was the OZtrail
Easy Fold Single Stretcher). My wife who has a double hip replacement finds it really comfy, now that really says something. All you really need is the 270 degree awning, two easy quick fold out stretchers, two swags that fit the stretchers and use the mattresses from inside the troopy with sleeping bags. It's lightweight and it's comfortable, what more can you ask for. Keep you back safe.

The basic interior build cost is around R350k. I have had this very build done. This cost excludes fridge, water heater, BCDC and inverter. The quality of the work is high and built to last. You are paying for a very well designed interior based on experience. I replaced an existing interior that was made with chipboard which was falling apart. I actually consider this very good value as I don’t have a workshop, tools or experience in fabrication.

Andrew, as a content creator I can understand your needs for a certain layout for a troopie, but as a normal person doing overlanding there is much different needs to maximize space usage thus you should more concentrate on the general public's needs than your own needs. People want to see how they can improve their rigs for normal use rather than your custom needs, it would be more helpful to the general overlander to assist in building his rig. You build rigs for a YT content creator but it means zero to 99% of your audience, they do not have your needs, they want practical overlanding and camping solutions. Put out more content that the public need not what you need

99% of what I say in almost all of my videos can be applied to any vehicle. They all have engines, gearboxes, bodies, doors and need to carry fuel and water and food. Very few things are peculiar to the Troopcarrier. I am also telling a story. To make it interesting, I have to choose something to challenge me. Or it soon gets very, very dull and no one will watch it. Overland-Workshop has insights, instruction and information that applies to all types of vehicle and all types of overland travel.
