I LOVE the Donkey Kong Country music playing in the background! I stopped playing fantasy football 5 or 6 years ago because it was draining. Hours were spent every single week researching players, tendencies and matchups just to make one adjustment to my lineup. The last season I played, I went as casual as possible, basically starting whoever had the higher projected points for the week - and got 2nd. It made me realize how big of a crapshoot the game is overall, which took a lot of the desire away. More importantly, I oftentimes had players from division rivals on my team which always put me in that stupid scenario of "I hope the Packers lose but Aaron Rodgers goes off". It started to make football Sunday chaotic and stressful, rather than fun.
This is my first year doing three leagues. Everything you said is spot on, especially the learning players component of playing fantasy. It helps get names out there across the entire league that casuals players/viewers would not know. The wins are fun but the losses can be brutal.
I played for 15 years or so and made myself stop last year. It was overtaking my enjoyment of just watching football. High level leagues for big money is a lot of work and gets stressful. I may go back someday but I’m good for now.
My story is the same. Almost the exact same, in fact. Only I played for 18 years. And have now been clean for 3. Of course, I use that verbiage (clean) jokingly... mostly. And I say THAT because it, absolutely, was an addiction. I have always been a numbers guy. A stat nerd, so to speak. I have also always loved the lore of sports. Particularly football and baseball. I grew up watching "NFL Films Presents" and adore that part of the game. But, my competitive nature coupled with being a numbers obsessed sports geek, fueled an obsession once I started playing in the more serious high-end leagues. I say high-end as in both money involved, but also rules and strategies. The last 12 years of my F.F. playing was in a keeper league, where one was, essentially, a GM. We had multiple drafts per year (one for out leagues free agents, and one for NFL rookies). I would get less sleep on Monday nights, because I was staying up until midnight to hit that waiver wire... often to stand pat, but also to see what my comp was doing. We had guys getting in trouble at their jobs because they were on their phones on the league pages, instead of working. We had a couple that damn near broke up, because they both played in the league. Their were friendships that were tested and weakened because of questionable trade tactics getting reported and turned down. It was intense. And also insane... once I stepped back to really look at it. To top it off, I was no longer watching the game I love so much for the stories. For the lore, that I grew up loving. I was missing all of that, because I was so intensely invested in the individual performances. I wasn't seeing the forest, for the trees, as the saying goes. I had to self-reflect, realize that I am far too competitive (as are many of friends and colleagues), and a little too obsessive, and step away from it. It was a great decision. I have more time on my hands, and have fallen back in love with the sport itself: the lore, the players, the play-calling. Every season is a story, with each team, hell even games, being the chapters... and I can see that again. And remember the seasons for those storyline rather than the season that the Pleasant Grove Buzz had Peyton Manning the year he broke the passing TD mark, only to fall to the Celtic Wolfpack in the playoffs, whose owner didn't even know who Joe Montana was. Enjoy your time away. And congrats on quitting. I know it's nor the easiest thing to put down, even though it absolutely should be. (Also, sorry for the book. 😏 I just read your comment and could relate...)
Same here, played from 2005-2021. I stopped bc of injuries mainly, just got tired of having a decent team only to lose 3/4 of them every year without fail. Also hated how it became about stats and not about human beings. I'm surprised how much more I enjoy football again, not stressing over fantasy. Just enjoy it for what it is. Another thing I hated is everyone bragging and showing their team. It's like we get it man you have a team.........so does everyone else.
@@rolmodel12. I’m with you. I miss the draft more than anything but I don’t miss staring at my phone all day instead of watching the games. I honestly enjoy watching football more since I quit. It’s nice to just focus on my favorite team and let them drive me crazy now.
@garrusvakarian6322 totally! The draft(s) was the best part of the season. A weekend day, or evening, spent with some old friends, making some new ones (or meeting some interesting folk anyway), having some drinks and talking ball. It would often turn into a bbq/party/event in and of itself. Last season, I was invited back to the draft, as I was the honorary big board person: writing the selections in. I had a blast! Watching people lose their minds, while scrambling to reorganize their draft plans when one of their players was taken, was a LOT more fun as an outsider. Lol. Highly recommend. I didn't even miss being one of the participants.
Fantasy is a major way I can stay connected with my dad and other family members now that I’ve moved to Europe. Four years of missing MNF because it’s at 2:30 am, but it’s worth it.
I’m playing fantasy for the first time ever and I’m in two leagues with some friends and I’m bordering on 3-0 and 1st place in my main league and I’m absolutely demolishing my friend in my other league right now. I’m not anticipating this success continuing but I’m certainly going to enjoy it while it lasts.
I had Nick Chubb as a keeper and traded up to get JK Dobbins. Was bummed for my fantasy team when they went down obviously (especially since the rest of my roster is doing really well and I feel like I might actually be able to compete), but was also sad for these players I grew fond of to have to endure such tough injuries. I was so relieved to know that Chubb’s injury wasn’t as bad as originally feared, not because it increases his fantasy outlook, but it gives him a better shot at coming back stronger and staving off what could have been a career ending injury for an awesome player. Become fans of your fantasy players, it makes injuries hurt more, but you also don’t dehumanize them.
The entirety of the NFL has become too much about gambling. I remember watching games with my friends or talking to online buddies and it was about the games. Now it is "Oh my god, I got the under/over on this many yeards/TDs from this player" or "Just score to cover the spread! Stop milking the clock!" or other such nonsense. As you said, teams are in it to win games, not cover your bets or fantasy games and it is just really disappointing to see people who used to really love the game now just care more about individual stats due to monetary interests.
I can’t speak for everyone but I feel that when there’s money involved with fantasy football it takes away a lot of joy and adds a lot of stress, I play fantasy for the love of the game and to stay involved with current players.
Still remember the time my country's soccer league adopted a fantasy football thing (called Cartola) which the local media conglomerate naturally marketed to hell and back. Tried one year, remembered about it for two or three weeks tops then just ignored it and never went back. Still feels like an incredibly foreign concept even if I've tried it similar fantasy things for other sports (including NFL) with similar attention rates.
People who value their team over the health of a playets are some of the most annoying people I encounter on sports Twitter. Was in my first ever championship game last season going into MNF, and I only needed a few more points from Tyler Boyd to win, then Damar Hamlin went down. It was an awful way to end the season, but safety of the player's comes before everything. Unfortunately others on Twitter couldn’t seem to process that
I play in a few leagues every year and if you play long enough, every conceivable outcome for or against you will eventually occur. I don't take outcomes as seriously as I used to. I can draft/acquire players to the best of my knowledge. However, I've accepted that I cannot control the external circumstances (injuries, play-calling) that affect my teams.
Currently reckoning with whether my previous season getting carried by Travis Kelce and Derrick Henry was a fluke. This year I drafted Chubb, Alvin Kamara and Garrett Wilson, so far I'm not having fun.
There are 256 regular season games a year. Not all of them will be nail-biters. Fantasy football gives me a reason to watch a throwaway game like Indianapolis vs Vegas.
Can we just talk about how gambling is so just blasted everywhere now? It is so cancerous to make people think gambling and betting is just a normal thing to do with your money. In terms of fantasy this was my first season of doing it and I just realized it kind of ruins the traditional viewership. Now I'm not rooting for teams to win or lose it just rooting for certain players and even playing against someone that is the opposite wr or rb to your player. It is just so odd but I will admit it is fun but overall imo it ruins the game.
1st year playing fantasy football and drafted Nick Chubb with my second pick...I already haten Fantasy football 😂. Get well soon homie, the NFL isn't the same without you!
Best fantasy memory for me was when I did a fantasy football league with my family one year, and my mom only drafted quarterbacks. Turns out, she got all of the good ones, and the rest of the family had none. This gave her basically all the negotiating leverage for trades.
I'm 33 years old and I've never played fantasy football. The worst was one of my former roommates, who on Sunday mornings would watch the fantasy football show, rather than the actual football analysis show.
I stopped playing fantasy years ago and a lot of my friends still play. Whenever I hear people discussing fantasy it’s the most mind numbing, boring topic of discussion. That’s why I hate fantasy, I just like watching games but I don’t like watching with certain people who will drone on about their fantasy teams.
I think I've had like 2 fantasy teams ever. One was waaaay back in the early days of Yahoo fantasy leagues and I happened to pick up Randy Moss and Randall Cunningham during their Very Special Year. Without even trying I won that league. I think I tried one more time a few years later and realized how much I hated keep an eye on injury news, guessing who might get the most touches, etc, and never bothered again.
I enjoy fantasy football but every couple years I quit and so I can watch the games without constantly obsessing over it. If you get too into it you completely forget about everything else related to football. Every single piece of data you get is a dopamine hit or loss related to its fantasy implications I don't know how the house so many people have like five or six different fantasy teams. I could never do more than one without it feeling incredibly overwhelming
We had a running gag between a few people in my league after the first 3 years. I had wanted a hand in drafting my players and I’m very meticulous in drafting players and free agency and all that. But the year we started was after week 1 so it auto drafted and I got to do all my reconstruction through free agency. Year 2 my flight was delayed and by the time I could set the players I wanted to draft, I was too busy boarding. The year after that my flight landed and was delayed again, due to the fact another plane was parked at our gate and I didn’t have service on the tarmac. These days I’m normally in town for the draft but it was a funny three first years
My favorite fantasy moment was Peyton's last year, I was playing against him in the championship. Watching my lead slowly disappear as he marches down the field... he completes a pass to give my opponent a tiny lead over me.... and then throws a game-sealing pick on the next play
Just draft your favorite team as your fantasy team. It works great and makes it totally effortless to watch and enjoy football! And it works great! Source: I drafted the Dolphins in my first ever fantasy league and I’m 3-0! I scored 181.66 points this week! My team name is OnlyFins and watching football is even more fun because now I know more about the Dolphins depth chart.
A few weeks ago ....i lost 116.08 to 116.0O...0. 8 freekin points!!! turns out i had the jets defense and they gave me O points vs Dallas...O(zero)FREEKIN POINTS from the "daunting" jets defense...im 0-3 now smh.
I decided against fantasy this year and get to enjoy Sundays in a much better way. I actually have time to enjoy the team aspect rather than stressing over who’s on the wire what’s my IR looking like. But respects to everyone who toughs it out year after year
I did fantasy football for about 8 years. Just can’t be bothered to care about it anymore. I don’t care who each teams 2nd string player at each position is, I don’t care about the waiver wire, I don’t care about bye weeks. I just care about watching good football and hopefully seeing my hometown team win each week. Fantasy football becomes a chore the second you join a league with people who care about it more than you do
I played fantasy football for 8 years and won 0 money. And yet I still won 3 league titles and played it for pure competition solely. Bragging rights in my league had a personal value and pride you can’t put a price on. I stopped because I felt the best way to end playing FF was to go out on top.
2 favorite fantasy football memories In 2017 or 2018 I was in the Super Bowl, in the morning I set my lineup and literally had 6 players from the chiefs vs Seahawks game, went to work, passed out from my long day of work and woke up to being back to back champion Then my all time favorite memory was the 2021 season, I started 1-5 and was just so busy with my girlfriend who was pregnant I didn’t really pay all to much attention to fantasy that year, but some how I scratched and clawed my way into the playoffs and the weekend my son was born I won the wild card game
last year I drafted jefferson at 1.1 and mahomes in round 3. adding dak off the wire, trading mahomes for etienne, and drafting Lamb in the 2nd saved my season. Lamb started putting up massive games as soon as JJ went out. Then JJ came back for the fantasy playoffs and I won the chip
My favorite memory is when I was down big and I thought there was zero chance of coming back but since my league has extra points for big plays the Hopkins Hail Mary against Buffalo won me the game and something I’ll never forget.
I will always be haunted by my fantasy season last year. I went undefeated until the championship game, where I lost by 2 points. For some reason I didn't walk away after that, its got a stranglehold on us all
My feelings on FF can be summarized by a line from the old Joe's Dinner commercial/skit from NFL, "So Jeff Garcia throws for 300 yards in a losing effort and suddenly you're the big winner?"
i lose week 1 134.9-135.9 because darren waller sat out the 4th quarter, i lose week 2 because i bench daniel jones and he goes for 30, going to lose week 3 because i start daniel jones
I played fantasy football once d and some of the reasons you listed is why I stopped. I find it hard for me to enjoy football and focus on what actually matters
It's far more luck than skill today. You have to get lucky because everyone is specialized now. You never know when your RB/WR might have 3 carries for 10 yards or 20 carries for 180 yards. You can't just drop and pickup players nonstop every week. I had Nick Chubb this year and had Christian McCaffrey when he was the consensus #1 pick only for both both to end up lost for that year.
I went into week 15 last year with the bye week and had Kyler, Hurts, Taylor, and Pollard all healthy. All of them got hurt by week 17 and I got blown out in the championship for a second year in a row in my dynasty league
I did fantasy football just once. My fantasy team started out rough, but I was able to win the league at the end. I haven’t done fantasy football since, just because I’m content with having won the league in my only time doing fantasy. I don’t feel the need to come back to it since I’m proud of what I accomplished.
Similar thing here. I played twice, won once. And while it was fun, it was also time consuming and I don’t have the time to follow every detail of the game.
Very glad I found this video on the day my team has 3 40+ point scorers(one picked up an hour before game time to replace Saquan) and 14 point Defense from my favorite team
I’ve been a perennial cellular dweller in fantasy football when I played, I was usually 5-9 or 4-10, or 6-8. That’s my hobby of choice is CAW where you create wrestlers and make a show out of it.
I'm a huge stats nerd. I'm a huge football fan. You would think I'd be huge into fantasy football, but I'm not. I just want to watch the games and enjoy football rather than worry about specific players doing well.
I have two problems with fantasy football, which is why I am not into it: 1. I would be biased toward players from the Packers, my favorite team. 2. I would have to root for players from other teams. Some of whom might be on a team I hate. For instance, my first choice at receiver would be Justin Jefferson, who plays for the Vikings (whom I hate with a passion!). And I would have to root for him to have a great game. But if he has a great game, chances are the Vikings are going to win and no way in hell am I going to root for that to happen!
I typically stick to the free NFL fantasy leagues since they're a lot more fun without needing about stakes while still getting dopamine from doing well
This is great take. I personally never got that invested into watching ball, always liked playing more and maybe rooting for a team. Fantasy is great in the ways it’s brought people together but shouldn’t not be taken too hard because those people who dm athletes are just throwing salt on an athlete who already had a shit day. TLDR: if you aren’t playing, it’s not that deep bro
I used to make fantasy content but moved on for several reasons. One of the reasons I gave it up is because I saw the dark mentality of some (not all) of the viewers in the comments of my videos. If a player got hurt, their first thought isn't "damn hope he gets better." It's "LET'S GO IT'S (insert backup player's name) SZN!" There were a lot worse comments thrown out there, and for someone who works closely with players now, I didn't want to be around people that view players as robots. Even for fantasy creators out there, comments are terrible. People treat them like they work in customer service, demanding you help them with their team, and if you get a prediction wrong, they become Karens and complain about how much you suck With that said, I love fantasy, love researching it, and play with my friends. But it has negatively impacted the mentality of some football fans
I’ve lead my leagues in points scored for 2 years but missed the playoffs both years because I versed a top 2 team every week for actually 2 years, I didn’t think this was possible
Fantasy football can be so awesome when your guys go off, but man is it painful when injuries happen to your star players and losing. Anyone who says fantasy football is easy are either liars or play in a cupcake league
Best fantasy memory for me is in our league, one of the guys drafted Andrew Luck literally 10 minutes before his retirement announcement. Most hilarious thing we have ever had and still talk about to this day.

I respect people that play fantasy just for the love of the game. The gambling aspect has brought the worst out of sports talk content.
Every single time a team scores a garbage time TD or FG the discourse is: “Vegas called”
"sports gambling has ruined sports" could be a video in and of itself
It's led to more sports fans that don't have a team. You could legitimately make an argument that the legalization of gambling in the US has contributed to the rise in male loneliness.

@@BenDover91187 Same. Fantasy was making watching football not fun for me. Been nice just being a fan of the game again.
Did not expect dark souls music in a football video
I’m playing fantasy for the first time ever and I’m in two leagues with some friends and I’m bordering on 3-0 and 1st place in my main league and I’m absolutely demolishing my friend in my other league right now. I’m not anticipating this success continuing but I’m certainly going to enjoy it while it lasts.
4:58 WHO TF GETS DRUNK AT APPLEBEES?!?!?!?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Donkey Kong music, football talk, and buddy keeping in touch cause of fantasy…. You understand me so well
The entirety of the NFL has become too much about gambling.
Adding the underwater Donkey Kong music to the last part of the video was tactical genius. Put me exponentially more in my feels
Mr Set the Edge, thank you for making this video, Arthur Smith would be proud
My first year of fantasy football I had 7 running backs get season ending injuries, and on the last week I was starting a 33 year old Ahmad Bradshaw
I came for your perspective, stayed for the Donkey Kong sound track in the background!!
Every single piece of data you get is a dopamine hit or loss related to its fantasy implications
I don't know how the house so many people have like five or six different fantasy teams.
These days I’m normally in town for the draft but it was a funny three first years
GET IN! I had Set The Edge in my team, hope he posts next week too!
Never had any interest in playing fantasy and will likely leave this earth having never played.
A few weeks ago ....i lost 116.08 to 116.0O...0. 8 freekin points!!! turns out i had the jets defense and they gave me O points vs Dallas...O(zero)FREEKIN POINTS from the "daunting" jets defense...im 0-3 now smh.
I still cannot believe I drafted Jefferson first to see him injured after just a handful of games.
Oh and I had Nick Chubb
I legit can't have a reasonable discussion about the Falcons because everyone is mad due to them picking up London and Pitts for their leagues.
Logan!!! Your alive! Great video as always man 😁 proud patron
Fantasy football becomes a chore the second you join a league with people who care about it more than you do
Always a great day when you upload
Finally someone says it. I’ve been saying fantasy is bad and bad for the game since the Yahoo Sports fantasy days.
Nice song choice for the last few mins when you were talking about how fantasy football is actually cool.
quit fantasy after like 10 years best decision ever
I played fantasy football for 8 years and won 0 money. And yet I still won 3 league titles and played it for pure competition solely.
Bragging rights in my league had a personal value and pride you can’t put a price on.
I stopped because I felt the best way to end playing FF was to go out on top.
Favorite player you used on your teams if anyone?
2 favorite fantasy football memories
In 2017 or 2018 I was in the Super Bowl, in the morning I set my lineup and literally had 6 players from the chiefs vs Seahawks game, went to work, passed out from my long day of work and woke up to being back to back champion
Then my all time favorite memory was the 2021 season, I started 1-5 and was just so busy with my girlfriend who was pregnant I didn’t really pay all to much attention to fantasy that year, but some how I scratched and clawed my way into the playoffs and the weekend my son was born I won the wild card game
last year I drafted jefferson at 1.1 and mahomes in round 3. adding dak off the wire, trading mahomes for etienne, and drafting Lamb in the 2nd saved my season.
For some reason I didn't walk away after that, its got a stranglehold on us all
Congratulations you’re the 2007 New England Patriots 🎉
@@BigWood21 I have greater empathy for that team after last year
My feelings on FF can be summarized by a line from the old Joe's Dinner commercial/skit from NFL, "So Jeff Garcia throws for 300 yards in a losing effort and suddenly you're the big winner?"
My brother, a diehard Dolphins fan, was mad when Mostert scored and happy when Stevenson scored last week. All because of fantasy matchups.
I play fantasy and I agree, I say I will get out of it the next year and end up doing it again. It is very addictive.
Love the Donkey Kong Country music in the background. Great vid.
The key to fantasy football is to have as much fun as possible while simultaneously putting your team in the best position to win each week.
i lose week 1 134.9-135.9 because darren waller sat out the 4th quarter, i lose week 2 because i bench daniel jones and he goes for 30, going to lose week 3 because i start daniel jones
I had Nick Chubb this year and had Christian McCaffrey when he was the consensus #1 pick only for both both to end up lost for that year.
i completely agree. I hate it, it is highly luck baised, it is infuriating.
But it has expanded my knowledge of the game drastically. I love it.
I went into week 15 last year with the bye week and had Kyler, Hurts, Taylor, and Pollard all healthy. All of them got hurt by week 17 and I got blown out in the championship for a second year in a row in my dynasty league
That Donkey kong OST in the background, I see you STE with your love of gaming.
Donkey Kong Country 2 music put me at ease. Great video 🔥
5:27 this is genuinely the hardest I’ve laughed from a football video ever lmao.
We don't talk about Chubb
I'm a huge stats nerd. I'm a huge football fan. You would think I'd be huge into fantasy football, but I'm not. I just want to watch the games and enjoy football rather than worry about specific players doing well.
I will never not enjoy donkey Kong soundtrack in the background. Nice video mate
My favorite fantasy moment happened this year in our draft, one of my boys couldn’t make it so the CPU auto drafted him 8 QB’s in a row😂😂
I have two problems with fantasy football, which is why I am not into it:
I typically stick to the free NFL fantasy leagues since they're a lot more fun without needing about stakes while still getting dopamine from doing well
I just went 15-0 to lose in the first round tonight so I enjoyed watching your video. Now I am going to go cry.
As a Nick Chubb and Johnathan Taylor owner, I fucking hate fantasy
I used to make fantasy content but moved on for several reasons. One of the reasons I gave it up is because I saw the dark mentality of some (not all) of the viewers in the comments of my videos. If a player got hurt, their first thought isn't "damn hope he gets better." It's "LET'S GO IT'S (insert backup player's name) SZN!" There were a lot worse comments thrown out there, and for someone who works closely with players now, I didn't want to be around people that view players as robots. Even for fantasy creators out there, comments are terrible. People treat them like they work in customer service, demanding you help them with their team, and if you get a prediction wrong, they become Karens and complain about how much you suck
With that said, I love fantasy, love researching it, and play with my friends. But it has negatively impacted the mentality of some football fans
I’ve lead my leagues in points scored for 2 years but missed the playoffs both years because I versed a top 2 team every week for actually 2 years, I didn’t think this was possible
I don’t play fantasy football because I just like watching football 🤷♂️
3:51 100% true, this is why I hate playing this BS.
3:31 - In all seriousness, Kyle Pitts hasn't gotten enough targets to justify the *FOURTH OVERALL PICK.*
I do it to slam dunk on my buddies but it just gets more and more sad with every injury
The fact that fantasy football is so unpredictable and chaotic is what makes it the best choice for a fantasy league
Fantasy football can be so awesome when your guys go off, but man is it painful when injuries happen to your star players and losing. Anyone who says fantasy football is easy are either liars or play in a cupcake league
Such a great video. I’m driving while typing this. Had to .
The satisfaction of winning purely based off wire waiver pickups that make up my team now instead of who I drafted XD
Every damn time.
Thanks Mostert.
