Thanks, Aaron, for another excellent video tip.
And I will strongly second the request to have F360 directly convert mesh to quads.
Please add ability to convert from STL to OBJ w/ Quads right to the Fusion 360 Mesh workspace!
yeeesss!! why they didn't do it yet???
Yesssss
Yeah, it's silly we need to get a subscription to ReCap just to do this simple operation.
Have you guys updated with this yet???
Ahhh thanks mate this is literally the most helpful thing in fusion right now
When I was first learning to model I used Sketchup because I had free access. I used to thing working with mesh files in sketchup was terrible and in some ways it is, however they had two import settings that were particularly useful. One of which was to combine colinear faces. It was great for simple meshes especially those that were boxy. Made them easily editable right out of the gate.
Thanks I'm working on a 3d scan of my torso to make a form fit arm prosthesis for my self, will open source once finished and instructables.
That's actually where a lot of my interest in working with meshes come from. I have a connection with a pretty fantastic prosthetist if you wanna get some guidance. Email me if you're interested. aaron.magnin@autodesk.com
@@adskFusion thank you will do, subject: KISS arm project.
I love this software everyday more. I don't use anymore rhino, maya and solidworks. So happy
Please add a Auto Convert to Solid Button. :)
Isn't that the dream?! Wait to see what we do with the mesh environment in the next couple months...
@@adskFusion Next to reworking the horrific sketch environment, and adding even rudimentary text tools, this would be a game changer. I hope you're successful. That would go along way to making me purchase the software.
@@adskFusion I'm still waiting...
@@reivaxpariswheel6983 they have a mesh to brep converter now
@@kristersaga4091 But it won't work if too many faces, not sure about the limit, but I think around 20K
Summary of methods::
1) 1:54 = Sculpt plane to mesh using pull. Like DRAPING a fabric onto a form
2) 2:21 = Sketch using mesh section then LOFT
and finally
3) 3:55 = Straight CONVERSION of mesh to T-splines via .obj quads file ((now remake is dead you can convert with meshlab/-filters-remesh-tri to quad then obj export)). Because you have not actually added intelligence to the conversion process the imperfections of a mesh will be enlarged if you make your object bigger - you haven't actually described any new curves: it's like analog vs digital, SVG vs jpg, raster vs vector. You also need to check for holes.
Now the big question... when to use each method? In the example he is using a open mesh but most mesh objects are hollow....
Fantastic information. Thank you!
Very nice methods, thanks!
1. Ensure timeline is disabled: click the cog in the bottom right of the window and select Do Not Capture design History.
2. Click Modify > Mesh > Mesh to BRep
3. Re-enable timeline: right click on the component name in the object browser hierarchy then select Capture Design History.
This works for simple meshes, but leaves tons of faces. That said, it was covered in a reboot of this quick tip too! Thanks for sharing!
your video is OK, would prefer slower for beginners, however I can not believe that in XXI century still have to recreate a solid by creating meshes point by point manually.
same lol
Fusion 360 developer folks... please consider including the Remeshing to Quad feature. Not having the quad-remeshing available is a deal breaker that I cannot afford to live with. For this single function alone, I am still staying with Maya's Poly>SubD>NURBS conversion, and then going into Solidworks to do the CAD engineering.
Lookup the youtube video titled: "QUICK TIP: Triangle mesh to quad"
wow these seem like so much work..why is it i can import any stl in a simple program like tinkercad and its a solid I CAN MANIPULATE BUT NOT FUSION 360....
Are you looking to do this for a 3d print? If so you'd have better luck with Netfabb
it's really bad there is no automated tool for this... My object is 60mm height, meaning if i slide it into 5 mm i need to do 20 slice manually :(
hi guys! I have an issue. I have a dashboard scan as a mesh. when I try to pull the flat plane to the dash it creates a blanked under tension, not filling into the "valleys"
how can I resolve this? I tried a finer grid but it somehow wont work
Just add the ability to work with stls pls. everytime i use recap photo to convert to quads it just fails. Makes it impossible to work with STLs
I scan huge mining vehicles and dont have time to diddle fuck around with all of the thousands of features within the scan, yet all details are needed. I just want a tool that can let me make surfaces fast that dont need to be manifold. I cant afford to spend anymore than a week on one scan. Do you recommend any ANY software available that can just crunch the mesh into a surface so I can then use in Solidworks or any other software. Thanks
Hello fiend i m tryin to convert stl file to g code solid body but my 3d design a wheel rim after i convert missing the center. You know how i can fix that?
how come the sculpt tool doesnt appear on my workspace ?
ReMake is saving the file as a STL instead of OBJ with Quads. Further more I don't have the option to enter the sculpt environment after importing my file....
does the free version of fusion 360 support these functions?
im very new to the program however have been using solidworks for a couple of years and understand the basics. My question is if there is any way to replicate a line kind of like a convert to entities tool? i hate having to trace over my stretches cause i feel like i haven't done it properly.
I’ve been trying this for several days now with no luck. Followed step by step. But once I have my mesh outlined. I can’t then go in to trace the outline In sketch. Basically starting at 3:00 onwards. Please help!
Thx so much
Mine says "Enable the Mesh Workspace Preview in Preferences>Preview to try our new mesh editing workspace." it says to go to preferences and enable mesh workspace but it already is. Not sure why it wont let me.
Thank you!
Mega gut danke du bist der beste !
Yeah I don't get how there's no convert to solid. I mean I'd put it Into mesh mixer and make it a solid but when I bring it back won't it just be another brep?
Is there a limit to how dense a geometry can be for t-splines convert to work?
The coolest video i saw todah
Aaron Magnin waiting ❤
Hi, I'm assuming you can modify each sketch @3:15 before using the loft function?
thanks
i have obj file will you convert to surfaces
You're awesome
what the literal fuck I'm like 2.5 minutes in and I had no clue you could do all this. I would just reduce, convert to body, and deal with the fact that it was an absolute mess and just do the best I could, eventually giving up and having to redesign the entire thing as a body lmao
This must be for professional version software. I don't have any of these tools bummer.
I don't think I can convert a mesh into solid on the educational version. Is this true? Can someone help!?
Good information. Thanks. I did have to listen several times. Hard to understand what you're saying.
Anyone else having trouble understanding what he is saying between 3:56 and 4:00? trying to catch the method he talks about but it sounds like gibberish.
He says 'Autodesk Remake, formerly Memento'. remake.autodesk.com/about
Remake is no longer supported on OS X, which leaves Mac users SOL. You can't run Remake in a VM either.
Replayed same section a few times..AdidasReenbank or AuditAssgreenbay.
LOL!
RUclips captions suggests "...odder than screaming..."
what about a tri mesh to Tspline?
YES!!! AN ENGLISH SPEAKER!!!!
when I do the first step in this video I get an error message saying to open the preferences and open a different program?
Make sure to see the updated version:

Hopefully that clears up the issue for you.
I love 360
Hello, I'm trying to use the mesh section technic but it turns out that due to a faulty stl (don't ask why nor to repair it because it would make it worse) the mesh sections aren't closed. How can I edit and close them?
Sorry, forget it, Found it….
What is the last method they told in the video
Wow!
this would be one of the most informative videos on this topic I have found yet if I could understand it all. bad mic or mouth too close with real quick speech but its very hard to catch every word clearly
lots of people cant get remake to run on there puters... I'm one of them.... what are other programs that can convert to obj quad mesh??
its a fully updated win7 .... and all the other programs run fine... its really odd...
3D Max has obj quads... not working in fusion, I might need to play with the export settings... if anyone has those... like umm... the fusion guys??.... please post....
Did anyone ever figure this out?
WTF we are in 2018?? and you cant just start working with stl files in a professional cad program????? DID WE JUST COME OUT OF A CAVE??? CRAP CRAP CRAP
I love you
All was going well until it was time to thicken....in which your tutorial stops there. This was a great tutorial but it also sounds like you already knew thicken was going to be a problem. So how can I get this into a body?
If you can't thicken due to minimum radius of curvature, surfacing techniques will likely need to be applied. Try an offset, then close it off so it can be turned into a solid.
I have 2 meshes I need to merge. an ideas?
Aaron Magnin I figured it out, I insterted two meshes in the normal model mode, so I couldn’t even select both of them to merge. I just had to insert the second one in mesh mode. Thanks anyways
Why is everyone I searched here on youtube has that EDIT option to reduce the facets and I can’t find this damn edit button!!! I am losing my mind!!!
NVM I figured it out...
Just what I needed but I had a hard time following the speaker.
Sorry to hear! An updated version was made recently...hopefully its easier to follow (although same presenter).

wish tis was automated.
Looks like all these features were removed
So you basically cannot just import a stl file into Fusion and do cam operation on it?
james shelton support for toolpathing stls was added to Fusion last month. or possibly the month before that
Hello Scott,
I saw the update release and tried to just import a stl file that I've used in another program. It wasn't straight forward as I thought, I was told I had to go through these steps to make it work. So basically from what i've seen and been told by The Fusion people it's not just load a stl and apply your tool paths
james shelton well.. I haven't tried it, but that's exactly how it's meant to work. so if Fusion people are telling you that you need to convert it, that isn't true. however, it's quite possible that there's still a face count limitation.
I used a stl file in this highly used software, I don't want to name out of respect. And I could simply go to town, when i tried this in 360 it's not so straightforward.
I want to make this work, but it seems there's alot of steps to do a import of the stl file
james shelton if you want. you can email it to *****@cadpro.co.nz and I'll take a look for you?
ReMake no longer work, another tool that sustitute ReMake?
seems like a very tedious operation fora a simple mesh
Can you speak faster for those of us trying to learn this, I was almost able to keep up and get something from this video.
Sorry Dave! Brad has mastered the proper pace.
don't work :(
Help, Remake No longer works to be able to create Quads!
Your voice is eerily similar to Storm Clouds Gathering. His name is also Aaron. Weird.
why would anybody ever code the arbitrary 10,000 facet limit for mesh to brep functions. PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT LEVEL PC'S!!
Thanks for the feedback, but may I suggest you try to convert a mesh with 9999 faces and let me know how it goes? Yeah, the conversion will succeed, but the performance going forward will be seriously hindered. The good news: we have some fantastics mesh tools coming that should help.
Now you can quad remesh quickly and for free Instant Meshes (github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes).
boss
Hope you also saw the remake of this video. Added some more info and clarified some things.
Outdated but very good tutorial. Unfortunately, the narrator talks like he’s got mesh in his mouth: much of what he says is not understandable.
Not easy to follow for a beginner.
This wasn't neccissarily intended for a beginner...but we would like to know where you got hung up. Did you also see the "reboot" version of this? This one is a tad dated at this time.
athispointiwantadda---- andimreadytoturntheseintoa--- man just slow it down a bit I think you said you were going to last vid.
Slower is for sure better - Please speak slower and make more pauses.
UI has changed in the meantime anyways, so this is partially outdated
Too hard to understand voice
Why? Too fast?
this tutorial is useless, i KNOW there is an easier way, hell, im just trying to convert a STL with simple edges, and flat sides so i can add to already made bodies with my minimal modifications, you are basically redrawing the STL in this vid, it totally missed the whole point of why i searched for help on what MUST be a simple operation.
Maybe this method will be better for you: ruclips.net/video/yO6hboYWnfM/видео.html
Did the other suggestion help?
Aaron: toooo fast. Not EVERYBODY on the Earth can speak/listen to/understand english...
WOW!
Make sure to see the updated version too! Our mesh handling abilities are definitely a strong point of the package.
