    A Trident console huh? I got chills just from the sheer connection to the past right there. Queen, Bowie, T.Rex Lou Reed, Rush and a ton of others recorded at Trident Studios in England and they quickly went on to develop recording consoles as well...obviously to feed their obsession. That deck is part of arguably some of the best rock history ever! Ziggy Stardust, the first 3 Queen albums...man! Sorry to geek out like that

    Andrews channel really helped me find some order in the chaos of my studio. It’s a small bedroom that at this point is full of gear. Seeing how he and dozens of other people solved storage problems and over tidiness issues with affordable options really helped. Getting my room under control, not so much from an acoustic treatment standpoint but in a functionally workable type of thing was a game changer for me.

    I grew up in console/tape machine studios and it’s nice to hear modern guys appreciate what that provides vs. the process of click and drag and staring at a screen. Down for dumping to hard drive as you’ll retain your high end on the multitude of mix passes. But tracking and mixing with a console is where it’s at. As Brett said, the tactile nature of it is everything and you’re not so micro focused on a parameter.😊

    • @bertfransman9864
      @bertfransman9864 Год назад +1

      I think there are other arguments to be made for digital. Tracking through a console anytime you can, but when you include client budget & timeframe, mixing in the analogue domain is just so hard to justify. Recalls are impossible or you need a console that has total recall (I don't have to explain how expensive & time consuming that is). I understand how having 64 channels of SSL EQ & compression for mixing was quite something in the past, but with the plugins & crazy good outboard that we have these days it makes a whole less sense.
      Don't get me wrong, as someone who grew up mixing live on consoles like the Midas XL3, I feel I have to work harder to get a great sound even on the highest end digital desk. There something about analogue desks that's absolute magic. But lord do I love saving a show by the press of a button, running CAT6 instead of a 150 pounds of copper, patching in a matrix instead of a huge splitter on stage via coms...
      Or in the studio sitting down in my chair and have my complete mix from months ago up in about 3 minutes. And I don't have to do 4 days of maintenance every month on a mammoth console that eats power like a small condo complex.
      The absolute majority of engineers these days work hybrid, best of both worlds is the only way forward.

    Guys, way overthinking the gear. Don't forget the whole point is about writing a good song. A good song sounds good on 4 track Tascam cassette. I mic up. Throw a couple 57s on a Marshall. As long as it sounds good, coming in, that's all that matters. I think the last time I uploaded a track on RUclips was over a year ago, on a portastudio lol. There's absolutely no point upload anyting music wise on RUclips in 2023. A giant waste of time. Beato has it covered. I've tracked in many real studios, like "Deep Purple" recorded last before we tracked. This is somebody's home studio. Faders and some outboard gear doesn't change anything. Us humans think it's cool to look at, so it must sound better 😉 After all that at the end of this video, your writing MIDI on PreSonus. Probably sounds as good as the console. Try some blind fold A/B shootouts. Outboard gear & console VS Any high end DAW. It's a crazy game to play. I did it yesterday. I had my friends mind in a blender for the entire day. He thought he knew it all.

    My contribution to your studio is my experience with Roc-n-Soc - they have options (including a square seat, which I have, and it's awesome) you can select with a checkbox to configure anything from a straight up throne to an office chair complete with casters, foot ring, and backs with piston height adjustment in several fabric types. Check your boxes, pay about a couple hundred bucks, and in a few weeks your built to order chair arrives - I've had mine for about 15 years and it's just now getting ready for a piston change (I've been saying that for like 5 years lol) and the fabric is nearly perfect on top with just some of the piping on the edge worn a bit.
    I'm not an affiliate but I wish I was. It's the type of tool you literally buy once; I see a lot of their configurations in a LOT of the best studio videos, which also affirms not just the quality but the comfort since a lot of places won't care about the cost of something they're gonna buy a few of, once. But they're so much less cost than any other seating option and with the configurability you can fill all your needs and spend half what you were on "specialty" furniture that fits the "role".
    Honestly I can't believe it's lasted this long and I use it for hours a day for everything from playing guitar to computer work and it's super comfy for all of it (why it gets constantly used). Can't say enough about the product...it's done right at a very fair price.

    The comment about artists making music at home, is exactly why the "industry" is trying to force everyone into going Atmos. I don't hate Atmos. I llve it actually. But it needs to be an option, not the only way of doing things. They are forcing people because artists creating at home don't need the "industry". Make them do something that is too insanely expensive for every weekend warrior to afford the materials/products to do it, and it will be cheaper to have the "industries" big studios do it.

Is it a couple apps on a laptop or phone with 4 good mics or what? What's the cheap modern approach to recording like Joni MItchell, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Nirvana?

    This space was potentially an acoustic nightmare. It's square at 19 x 19 ft. And the peaked ceiling would focus sound in a weird way. It shouldn't work, but it does. I guess the FabricWall on the
    ceiling works. Short of DI-ing everything into your DAW; which you can't do with drums, you have to acoustically treat your room. Most of us DIY which ends up looking like "walls with acne". Rhett's
    comment that when you mix on a DAW with a mouse you end up "mixing with your eyes, not your ears" is unfortunately true.

    Howdy Rhett and Andrew,
    Totally awesome use of wasted space. Don’t forget you also have 20’ x 20’ below that can be used for orchestral works or tributes to those who have gone to that other band.
    BTW - Probably best to just bite the bullet and use pre-drilled wood as your coffee and other pourable liquids station top above your amp shelf. One-half to one full inch holes gets the job done right if in a hurry for your liquid amp screams.

  • @jimc2384
    @jimc2384 Год назад

    Rhett, as a console owner (I bought a used Neve 5088 during the pandemic)- some things to consider... regardless of whether a console is new or old- if a channel goes down, look for a console that is serviceable per channel. I love the trident stuff but if you go that route- get the Trident 88- not the 68. The 68 is only serviceable in banks of 8. That means if one channel goes down, you have to take the other seven down to repair it. Not the case with the 88 series. Its an important purchase - so do it right. Other consoles I would recommend. The Neve 5088. You can start with 8 channels and expand, the Api 1608 and the Iron age audioworks console. Also- make sure you invest your money with a proven company thats going to be around for a long time. Hope that it helps.

He definitely has a great studio and I am a HUGE proponent of having a control surface. I went through a couple different ones before I finally settled on the UF8 when it came out and I will never go back to any other one. It is BY FAR the best control surface out there. Used in conjunction with my SSL Big Six, it definitely gives me the hybrid studio setup where I barely have to use the mouse at all and the fact that you can link multiple UF8s together is a plus.
