  • How To Troubleshoot a front derailleur on your own. I am going to go through troubleshooting the front derailleur. This will be specific to issues regarding upshifting, starting from the smallest chainring in the front onward to the biggest ring on the outside. There will be two potential problems I will address in this video. Too much slack in the front derailleur cable and the high limit screw to tight or screwed down too far into the derailleur. Hope this helps.

I struggled for hours trying to sort a new front derailleur because my other was damaged. Doesn't matter what videos I watched I still couldn't sort. It just wouldn't move up or down properly. Watched this short video and sorted it in less than 10 minutes. Biggest problem was cable tension. All other videos pull with pliers which tends to make it too tight - fingers are fine. Just then a matter of unscrewing the H screw a little and bingo. So easy to follow and understand!

This may have given me the answer I needed. Pulled out my 30 year old Schwinn Mirada Sport that I bought in high school and haven't ridden since before the pandemic (so fall 2019 at the latest I last rode) and the front shifter is frozen on the middle ring.
The Shimano 100 GS mechanism may also be gummed up but I did see some slack in the front shift cable and I do remember trying to fix this earlier by messing with the limit screws as at that time, I only had two of the three front gears. Rear shifter is working on all seven gears (although it wants to jump gears at seemingly random times).
Thanks for a few things to try before I resort to bringing it in for service.

Everything shifts okay but I kept thinking that I better tighten it, but I also kept thinking that if it works OK then why touch it? Hmm! Well, you saved me a lot of hassle because you say it's okay it to be a bit loose. I am usually a lazy bum, usually, I don't want to comment but after watching your video I got up. Today I was totally lost why the hell my chain is not moving to big gear, it is always staying in the smallest gear. even pushing the cable hard. Now I am pretty sure it is the limit screw, I almost gave up on this problem, Now after watching your video I can't wait till daylight shows up tomorrow and start working on it again.

Very helpful to me as I bought a Schwinn Aluminum Comp 27.5 mountain bike at Walmart that was poorly put together and set up. The biggest problem was the front chain ring would not go from smallest chain ring to middle chain ring but it would go to the largest chain ring then down to middle chain ring. Been a while since I adjusted derailleur's on a bike and this was a big help. Took me some time and I had to start over from initial set up. The front derailleur wasn't even in the proper parallel position to the chainrings. Once I got that set up properly it was a matter of taking the slack out of the cable and fine tuning the cable tension. Then I noticed the rear derailleur was not shifting properly and had to fine tune that with cable tension, which took less time. Lots of stationary testing then a test ride and all seems good now.

Hi, very good information but my problem is going from big to middle. It doesn't stop in middle goes to small. What do I need to adjust?

Hmm, mY be a shifter issue. Verify it is a 3 speed shifter. Some shimanos can switch between 2 and 3 chainrings.

@@BikeTeacher normal operation is it can go from big to middle to small. I have bike on trainer, this just occurred where it is going from big to small, when I shift down.

Thank you for putting out this video. Understanding how derailleurs work helped me understand what the problem was on my bike. This video clearly explained a lot.

I was having a weird problem on my road bike. When shifting from the small chainring to the big, it struggled, and would often then drop the chain into the inside of the small chainring. Super weird. After some fiddle-farting around, I figured out the front derailleur needed to be moved up vertically a hair. Just added the comment because I didn’t see anyone with a similar problem online anywhere, or how to fix it.

Nice! That is weird and uncommon but still a legit problem. Thanks!

Hi. Good vid. Just a thought to cover the adjustment of gear two. Limit screws are easy for adjusting rings 1 and 3, but adjusting for number 2 can be a real bugger. You can set up 1 and 3 ok, but then it racks all the way to 1, skipping number two. The 2nd ring is all about tension adjustment and you do not have much adjustment on the barrel, often requiring experimentation with tension, undoing and redoing the cable tension nut.

Thank you! I just bought a used Trayl for very cheap. I knew it had couple issues and this will probably help the most relevant one of shifting out of big ring 1
