Completely agree that the lack of fancy features makes the mod. It really solidifies the sense that you're playing the original historic game, just with a better display.
I love HL:A but it doesn’t feel like half life made by valve, it feels like an insanely detailed fan game. Boneworks is to VR games what half life is to flatscreen games.
@@JourneyToTheSky Thats a pretty good way to put it, Boneworks is clunky and the physics is buggy, but it pushed VR way more than HL Alyx did, while a more polished game was way more limited in its interactivity
I spend like 20 hours playing HL Alyx (which is the best VR game by far) start to finish and after that, 200 hours playing all the excellent free story mods made by incredibly talented and dedicated fans who create all this for free for their fellow fans! And there are still more coming out every day. Can't wait for HL Levitation!
One of the most important things for a VR game is atmosphere and despite being so old and looking "bad" (in comparison to modern games) HL1 still has boatloads of atmosphere; thats likely why its so good in VR.
There's also a version that runs natively on the Quest, and at least from what I percieved playing the scale issues aren't AS bad, though yeah it definitely feels off lol.
I've played through HLA 4 times now lmao. Once on easy just for the story and it was my second game in VR. 2nd time with a couple mods, 3rd on a harder mode, and a 4th with more mods after there was more stuff out. Same with HL2, SMOD was so cool back when it came out. Can't wait to play the VR mod that's coming out later this year.
Half life 1's replay ability most likely stems from its naturally nostalgia feel for a lot of HL veterans that still stick around. In fact its one of the few that its quality stems a lot of nostalgia based quality now.
I never really understood people who play in VR but then just stand in one spot and use buttons and joysticks to turn around and crouch. My whole life I dreamed of being inside a game, physically ducking into cover, being able to crawl out of it to land a shot I never would be able to in a flat game. So when I got my VR set, you bet that's what I did. If one has severe motion sickness or is too unfit to move around like that, I get that. That's fair. But I've seen way too many people not even give that a try. They treat VR like a glorified arcade machine with a lightgun.
I completely side with you. When I went through Alyx, during Combine encounters, I would find a nearby optimal spot to hide behind and lean out to attack, only virtually moving from my spot when I absolutely needed to, and it was a super thrilling change of pace, not too dissimilar to the joys of landing a mere kickflip off of a ledge in Skate versus landing a high combo in THPS. Seeing people just stand there, sticking their gun hand out and dodging around impending Combine attacks with the joystick like they were playing Doom had me sad that they were circumventing the intended fun for the least intensive, "most optimal strategy". VR is all about the physical involvement; letting the tactile buttons control the game instead of your own movements just defeats the purpose of being immersed in the first place.
See I wish I could play like this, but unfortunately, my playspace does not allow for it due to how small it is, which sucks I do however, physically crouch
cord twisting, fatigue, and hitting things in your room are all things that make this approach risky for your expensive equipment and general experience of the game there are times where leaning out, turning, or crouching is the optimal choice but sometimes pressing a button is much more convenient
Well yeah I treat it like a glorified arcade with a light gun because that's exactly what I wanted out of VR. I'm still waiting for Namco to port time crisis or Sega with house of the dead.
I admit, I installed HL:VR on my Quest because it pretty much can't handle anything else. And I was blown away by the sound and aesthetic and immersion I got, from a game that looks works than Jedi Outcast.

Half Life 1 isn't a source game, though. Unless you're playing the Source port of HL1, but you can't with this mod - you'd have to play it through Garry's Mod.
Half life's expansions run natively on lambda/the quest port, and H3vr has faithfully realized versions of tf2 weapons built for VR, as well as a custom mod community that introduced things like a cp_steel and 2fort map for take and hold!
I played it a second time for the damn gnome achievement, but the experience is just so smooth and so good, like in all HL games, that I can totally see myself coming back to it.
