- Revisiting the Framus Cobra after 11 years. This is such a weird specimen of an amplifier, but so cool in its own way. Unfortunately they're not making them anymore.

Revisiting the Framus Cobra, 11 years later! Still sounds boss!
Uncle Roger would approve
Killlswitch engage used them back in the day were great amps but broke down alot
THICCCCCCCCCCCCC
fuyoohhhh! :)
You sound boss haiyaaa
Hey Ola, here's a story I hope you read and have a laugh at.
Around the time your original Framus Cobra video came out, I was asked to join a band with someone from a nearby town.
I was told they'd demo tracks and songs already written - and only needed me to learn them.
I got the "demo tracks" and was blown away by the guitar tones and riffs that a random 20 year old had written.
So much so, that I showed them to a friend and he instantly said, "He didn't write them".
I asked him to elaborate so he pulled up your RUclips channel - showed me the original Framus Cobra video and Taurus Stomphead video.
He didn't so much as steal your riffs, but went as far to rip the audio, edit the metadata to show his own name - and was passing it off as his own.
The look on his face when I asked him - "have you heard of Ola Englund?"
I've been a fan of yours ever since.
I wanted to tell you this story when I met you in Dublin with The Haunted - but it was a bit longwinded to start telling outside of a Venue.
Holy shitballs. This is the best tone I've ever heard.
@BalashToth old comment but the Cobra is a monster.
"But if you turn up the mids...... still unusable" literal laugh out loud.
hahah lol
It's true. That switch is AWFUL. I've contemplated rubbing off the "TCH" letters on those switches so it just says NO.
@@bon3d3th You'd fully understand in person hearing the difference between the notch engaged and not. It's completely unnecessary. It's like a neutering switch.
@@bon3d3th Okidoke, dude. 😐👌I got you fine. I actually have the amp so I'm telling you in person you would not run the amp like that. The grind I'm sure would color up the switch so it's usable maybe alone for practice, but it's really not the same hearing what you hear on RUclips compared to what it sounds sitting right in front of you.
Also the amount of low end the mid boost adds on this amp is unlike anything ive ever owned so there's that to..
I remember you did a guitar recording tutorial with this and Matt Damon as your narrator.
And the how record bass guitar at home tutorial. I watch that every couple of months. 🤣
Random pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the vids.
jajajaa please I need that link !!! xD
The “uncle roger” Haiyaa made me laugh 😂
Me2 .... actually he watches his videos
Someone should make Uncle Roger review Ola's tone
@@karstenhammerhansen yea someone tell him 🤣
Insomnium used this for (rhythm?) guitars on "Across the Dark" album.
But as it turned out, their Cobra was broken - it didn't have a limiter and by the end of recordings the amp just melted.
That's... Actually pretty fucking cool. 😂
the idea of an amp fucking melting is metal af
With the Dimebucker and the Tube Screamer engaged... sound is just amazing! A killer tone!
"Playing on the crunch channel that sounds brutal as hell"
-ok, let's switch to the lead channel wich has way more gain !
Yep I felt that one too!
I love Greenbacks so much. Very underappreciated in the metal realm.
10 years ago Ola the beardless swede made some heavy ass sounds man
Can't be that bad if KsE used those to record End of the Heartache. One of my favorite (sounding) metal albums.
Part of the album, apparently the amp shit itself during recording 😂
@@anthonycamillos3719 Facts. They switched to the dragon when this happened
Edit: it was the other way around. for one song only
@@kreepthedestroyer I remember hearing the Dragon was only used on Rose of Sharyn
@@somegingerdude8110 it’s the other way around: dragon on the album with 5150 mixed and Cobra in that specific song since the dragon blew up.
Really? So when did they switch to the mesa roadsters?
This amp (and the dragon) got a bad rep due to the fact that the amps went through a few revisions and the easiest ones to find are the v5 revisions which according to most people are the worst sounding revision of the bunch. I owned a v2 dragon and it was AMAZING. The revisions for Cobra are v1, v2, and v5. The revisions for the Dragon are v1, v2, v3, v4, and v5.
V1 Dragon owner here. Best amp I ever had (and still have). It just killed my amp GAS ten years ago, lol
That’s the majority of amps people don’t like
@@tommilitello198 it is true that there are more V5's than anything else. and they do tend to get the worst rep. If that's what you're saying.
I was lucky enough to use a Cobra in one gig as backline, boosted with a Maxon OD, sounded so fucking TIGHT dude. People don't know what they're talking about. I barely had to dial in anything to get a good tone.
I remember watching a brand new video, made by a yet-to-reveal-his-voice Swedish giant, about this head before buying it just to fulfill my confirmation bias. Then I bought it and it sounded nothing like the video, 'cause I sucked at playing, setting the Amp up and recording. I was super proud of my pro amp in my amateur band, then we disbanded because we sucked hard. Then my music ambition quickly faded before my eyes. Then I lost my life ambitions as well. And here I am after 10+ years with no accomplishment whatsoever but still watching the good old giant swede hitting goal after goal.
Time flies when you're a loser! ❤️
Or stop talking shit about yourself and work on playing again. Don't just sit around wallowing.
That riff is heaven
This is still the coolest sounding amp I've ever heard ten years later.
happy tuesday homie
Fantastic amp. Framus should reconsider to reintroduce it again, maybe with some footprint changes and maybe a smaller version too.
Sounds massive. Even better with the Solar pickups.
Brutal sounding amp dude, very thick and boomy. I’d love to take this amp for a test run.
How the fuck did you just put a pic of Ola in your comment
@@JobForAMaxboy become one of olas members for extra perks, emojis, giveaways, and personal VC chats with him and other members! It’s great man you should try it got a month or two. It’s only 7 or so bucks for the basic membership.
@@JobForAMaxboy Copy and Paste, it`s in the same format as every emoji (PNG)
That's probably my favourite sounding amp out of the ones I've heard you demo, along with the driftwood purple nightmare and mesa John Petrucci sig amp
I’m biased but loved the Soldano hotrod from way back
The Driftwood is badass. Would love to add one to my not-yet-existant collection one day.
Shhhiiiiittt time flies, I still remember watching the old video.
That tone is absolutely mouth watering
Sounds freakin brutal. Best raw non-processed tone I've heard in a while and beats the dual rectifier in my opinion.
Anything beats this overpriced shit. I had displeasure playing one. Every randall and peavey has better gain. What is mesa with no overdrive pedal running before it?
And vids like these are precisely why it gets even harder to obtain these hidden gems!! This is one of my bucket-list amps...sounds phenom!
Aaaaand......a bit of an update : I found one and it came today!! Time to dig in!!
I played my Cobra yesterday. Glad to finally see one back in your hands, Ola. I know you were on the fence with them before but this OG video was the best tone (and wonderfully used with the Feared song) that you've had back then. The Cobra is a monster. Cheers!
Definitely one of the best sounding amps you've tested! Freaking amazing low end that remains nice and tight on the palm mutes. To me that's an ideal metal tone regardless of which guitar is used. The richness of the distortion and how you can hear each string clearly is also amazing. Just superb.
Ola, I bought a Hughes & Kettner Tri-amp MKII after watching your video. It was an absolute nightmare getting it to Australia but so worth it.
I like where greenbacks sit tonewise, cut right through the mix and don't stomp on everything else.
Adam D’s main recording amp along with his 5150 for many years 🤙🏻
I loved the Cobra back then and I gotta say, it still crushes. I genuinely prefer that to a majority of "modern" amps when it's dialled in...
Since this was the only amp I've ever owned it became my workhorse for the past 17 years or so. I always get compliments on the sound and people still don't know the company. Now I just need to profile/capture it so I can put it in my modeler. Thanks for posting/sharing the Cobra!
God that tone is perfect!!!
I've been dying to get ahold of one for years.
@@TakeAHikeMike good luck my man these things are stupid rare and $$$$ but I understand your already aware lol
@@TakeAHikeMike there is actually one on reverb as we speak with matching 4x12 cab for $3K US
OMG! That opening riff was Godly!
This legit in my opinion is one of the best sounds I’ve heard out of your Amps in a whirl dam that thing is a beast!
Metal 10 years later gives me chills , thanks Ola
Hearing Furor Incarnatus stuff in those recent videos makes me so happy.
Sounds amazing! I feel honored to live right next to the company's hometown in Franconia, Germany ;-) It would be great if you do another video of my favourite amp from ENGL - the legendary E646 VICTOR SMOLSKI LTD
I'm originally from Nuremberg. Moved to the US in 2016. I'm not missing anything lol.
I remember back in the day when Framus broke out in the amp world with this and the Dragon. Which one was it that was catching on fire? I can't remember. Maybe the Dragon. Holy s**t, we jad a blast with that back in the wild west days of Harmony Central.
I've had my Framus Cobra since about 2007 and it's an absolute monster.... used it coupled with an Orange Rockverb on the latest album my band recorded and it sounded HUGE.
I remember seeing Lamb of God open for Anthrax at a small venue touring for As the Palaces Burn. They were playing a Cobra and a Rec. I was in front of Marks Cobra. Very brutal amp.
I have a Cobra and was thinking about selling it as I haven't played it in a long time. Got it setup to take some pictures and to test it out to be sure it was working. As soon as I hit the first chord, it sounded so good I don't think I can sell it as I know I would regret it.
it sounds so huge. every note and chord super crushing
Would love to hear this Amp with different Cabs. This is THE Metalcore Amp of the 00s
Love the 5150 head in the back ground love to get on
One of the first videos I saw that got me hooked on your channel.
Thanks Uncle Ola.
Congratulations on 10 years brother
Wow, what timing! I'm borrowing a Framus Cobra from a friend soon to capture with my Quad Cortex. I remember these being popular ala Killswitch Engage if I remember correctly. KSE has always had killer tone, so pretty excited to chug it.
That squeal at 4:14 was *chef’s kiss*
Loved it back then ....still love it! GG
If you could get hold of one in the future I'd love to see the Laboga Mr Hector back on the channel
With sooo much chunk in those chonks that MTM was loving it to👌🤘🤘
The cobra still has a heavy bite love it Ola
I've never really loved the tone this has in other demos but here it sounds insanely massive! Love it! Maybe it needs the matching cab with greenbacks to really shine.
There was a reason why that video was popular. For quite a while when I dial my tones/choose a impulse response I though of this amp. In my opnion Ola did justice only for 2 amps, one was his Mesa rectifier, and then this. Those boutique amps, the bogners, the diezels, they are great end game amps and get the jobs done. But none of them produces such a distorted tone. It is just the embodiment of the word brutal in metal music.
Nice fucking video!
An interesting thing about this amp is how the loop mix influences the sound even if you have nothing plugged there. It makes a biiiig difference in the tone.
Yep I keep mine at 12 0clock.
@@djdanger9812 oh mann, i remember this quirk - always loved that!
Delivers some proper dope angst
Ahhh the amp the broke my heart. Mine kept blowing up mid gig and/or mid rehearsal. Loved the tone, no pedals necessary. After years of modified JCM800s, then 5150s,the Cobra just answered all my prayers. Except reliability! Next, ENGL Powerball which was totally reliable thankfully. Still miss Cobra despite the pain it caused
I've been hanging out for this! Awesome video
This and a peavey 5150/6505 Parkway Drive tone ' Horizons'
2 things: I’m offended that your channel asked me if I was a first time commentator. Lastly, I love that you just start the demo and give us an organic experience with it. You could have re-recorded with TS off and then cut the part with the Solar on the neck pickup etc. I wish I wasn’t so critical on myself when recording videos for RUclips.
the original is one of my favourite tones you ever got. just crushing
Nice man, absolutely love it when you play anything from Furor Incarnatus. Still one of my favourite albums of yours.
I always end up using the Crunch channel boosted for rhythms - it’s just so much more chunky than the lead channel. Severely underrated amp!
I'd love to see your take on the Dragon.
I just wanna say that the cleans are as awesome as the dirty tones!
Framus Cobra is BRUTAAAAAL!
I love this revisiting videos 🤘🏻
@Ola Englund This is the beast
I fucking lov this series Ola!! I've been here since the very beginning and it's so cool to see how far you have come. Revisiting your old tests bring back cool memories and mean feared riffs!
F****ng great sound,thanks for the video Ola,cheers from Bulagaria🤘🍺!!!
The Framus Cobra is an amp that Adam D from Killswitch Engage has used countless times in the studio, and is super underrated.
Thanks for revisiting your amp demos. My favorite back in the day was your demo of the Mesa Boogie Mark IV.
Me too
Arrrgghhh the Framus is a beast!!!
Enjoyed it, Ola
I remember seeing Unearth in their early days (just after Sting of Conscience came out) and they used those live. They sounded awesome...
I adored my Cobra, and regret selling it every day. Haven't seen one for sale at a decent price for YEARS. Having the matching cab makes all the difference. Great video. PS - I enjoyed the first Cobra video that you did a decade ago too!
Seeing that video now I remember that video, I think that was where I discovered you.
"dimebagging shit all over" hahaha love it! Greetings from Florida Ola, you da man!
Damn I’m loving the tone of this amp
There’s a module for the RM100 modeled after this amp I’m considering it now lol
that intro riff was kickass
Sounds really good
It chugs! 😎🔥🎸
This Intro is sick🔥🔥🔥
Was a beast with the tube screamer
i love that you still have that ibanez fuiyoooooh
So rad! Burly tone! 💪🏽💪🏽
This is my new favorite video series of yours.
Jesus, I remember when the original video came out 10/11 years ago..!
That's just some angery sound there. Almost scary. Solid 6/10!
Edit: did anyone else get a black eye from listening? Frickin' brutal!
Dang only a 6? What you consider a 9?
Love when Ola does the stank face.
I know this is from a year ago but this amp is one of the best tone wise amps I've heard on this channel.
Some one was selling a Framus full stack where I lived for $3,000, but I just didn't have to cash to purshase it and plus I don't really have anymore room in my house for more amps. Of course it sold fast! Rock on! \m/
Damn, I remember when everybody wanting to get in the business for cheaper was looking at Framus Dragon or Cobra. The Framus 2x12" cabs were the cheapest V30 cabs at the time. I think this one actually sounds better without tubescreamer. It's clearer. The distortion doesn't become too much.
I always liked your Mesa/Boogie Mark 5:25 shoot. One of the best sounding amplifiers too. I wouldn't complain if you revisited that one, still a super solid in production amp.
Their cabs were pretty inexpensive, but heads not so much. I remember that Dragon cost nearly 2000€
haha yes! The video that sold me on my favourite amp.
That riff at 4:05 is BONKERS. Such clean pinch harmonics. absolutely killer.
I vote Hughes and Kettner Triamp MKII for your next revisit!
Damn that sounded fantastic
That chug is incredible! What a sound!🤘🏻😈😎
Love the video work in this clip! :)
Awesome!
