Big Fan OLA, pardon my ignorance but i have learned most of black album songs, and with confidence for the laste 10 or so years i can say they are in E standard tuning all in that said, your rig sounds amazing
When I was a kid, this was the album that introduced me to the world of metal. Before that I mainly listened to pop music and whatever my mom was into. This album changed that.
I've always tried to figure out what role the MP1 played in their rig back then. I think you can definitely hear it in some of the lead playing on the album, but I'm still not sure what James was doing with it.
@@Jez3134 I think people overestimated the bands in studio when it comes to fiddling for the sound. More often than not, the engineers will propose some changes, amps etc, after a lot of trial and error, and it's likely that the band simply can't remember or simply never really knew what has been used. A studio when it comes to track guitars is really messy. Best modern example is Kurt Ballou. Many unknown and modded amp, a gazillion pedals laying around. Always get a killer sound on albums, but track after track, no one can follow up what's going on.
@ If Lars had two sets of Snare on that Album, using the Pan for certain parts and not all songs, it could have had some dynamic to it, because it sounds good in some parts but overstays it's welcome fast... Even Slipknot that literally used a Trash Can didn't overuse it. Could have made it a Snare with a kick pedal. All ideas can work, but usually a good idea to use it sparingly
If you watch the Year and a Half In The Life of Metallica documentary they show building a big tent of foam around the speaker cab in the studio. Isn't Sad But True the only song in D, the rest being in E?
Dude, that's closer than I've ever heard anyone else get to that epic tone. I'm going to try and use this info to get as close as possible with Amplitube 5. I picked up the Mesa Boogie 2 pack recently which includes the infamous Mark IIC+, so I'm really stoked to attempt to see what I can get out of it. The closest I have to the JCM800 is an older JCM900 clone ("British Tube Lead 2") which isn't great, but I do have Marshall's licensed "JCM Slash" head which is also an older modeler but sounds way better (based on the '87 Silver Jubilee 2555). Neither are perfect, but I'm sure that I'll end up with a pretty cool tone in the end. Thanks for this Ola! 🤘
Hey yo Ola!!!!! Man, I would love to see you do a demo and throw back to one of my favorite amps I own!!! The Ampeg VH-140C!! Made famous by so many early death metal bands. Cool! It’d be fab to re-record the black album with the ”..And justice for all”-sound on everything to see how it sounds Or maybe the ”ride the lightning”-sound.
To my ears the guitars are way less scooped on the album. Bob Rock was all about bringing in the complex midrange to the whole mix while still being chunky. Where it was scooped was more precise and less of a huge smiley face.
Yep, as a Metallica nerd this tone is not that close to be honest. It's good, but not quite there. The whole setup was quite complex with all the outboard gear they used
@@comand0Metalero1 It was in the ballpark, but too harsh on the high end for me. The album tone has a smooth blend with the bass and not so much presence & treble.
Bob Rock has gone on the record talking about how the structure of the room mattered a lot, including building wooden boxes and constantly moving mics. And yes the layering was crucial. James said they added a separate rhythm track called "the thickener"
Now get ready to see the already crazy 2C+ prices skyrocket ... I own an original 1984 C+ and yes it does sound phenomenal but so do the mark III and IV. Also, for the Master of Puppets rhythm stuff, no marshall amps were used. All 2C+
The slaving a Marshall thing is a myth, Fleming himself says so in the Puppetz book and in the forums. He says it may have been for a couple of solos, if that 👍
100%..... his exact quote was: “It is only on some solos we use the JCM 800 as poweramp. Most guitars are with the Boogie powerstage!” And as for the Marshall connection with the Black album tone, it’s a cab running a Jose modded Marshall blended along with the Mark IIC/IV action through the multiple mikes into the single track that is “the tone”, nothing to do with the power section.
Problem is it never happened.... It was a rumour in the late 1990’s that the setup mentioned was “responsible” for the Master of Puppets tone. Flemming has himself debunked this since. The “slave” was only for the odd lead that Kirk was playing and never for James’ rhythm sound. I’m guessing Ola carried the misinformation over to the Black album because there’s a mention of a Marshall being used for mids, but again, this had nothing to do with the power section, it was a single track blended with the IIC+ and IV heads/ cabs to put a little mid range into the final “tone”. It was Bob Rock’s “Jose modded” JCM run as a regular amp track.
@@Justice_Hammer ok ok ! thank you very for this precious reply ! morality : stay carefull with information. I was curious about this information and just wanted to test it. So it was a mix of two mark amp in stereo into "marshall" cabs. about the marshall, I tested marshall amp + screamer and I sound close to some kirk solo. I is an alternative to mark/triaxis + screamer for solo. thanks and excuse my English
@@christopherblair6636 Kirks sound from this era was a blend of an ADA MP1 preamp (similar looking to a Triaxis), other Marshalls and his own Mark IIC+. I believe the mix of how much of each would vary slightly based on the song or the solo sound they were chasing. The ADA was a big part of his Justice/ Black era sound, but I’m not sure there’s one single definitive sound for Kirk.
@@Justice_Hammer thank you so much again, I copy past your comment for my personnal notes. Yes the gear would vary in each songs. I have a last question for you (you seems to know a lot :) ), other era, do you know what gear Kirk use "live" in the late 90s (example s&m) for lead ? Is it simply rectifier preamp into a rectifier amp? (+screamer? + slight delay) or there is something I miss. James gear is pretty well documented but for Kirk it is a bit difficult
@@christopherblair6636 As far as the screamer it was usually a TS-9. The majority of effects came from a TC Electronics G-Major for things like delay and modulations (live rack). Rigs around this period had an amp switcher switching between a Marshall JMP-1 midi preamp, a Mesa Triaxis, and a Mesa Dual Recto Rack Preamp. I’m guessing certain preamps were used for certain lead tones throughout the show. Later versions of this rack setup have been used with only the Recto Preamps excluding the other two, but kept the same G Major. Each had a Dunlop Crybaby rack wah system.
The best. The greatest. The most masterful metal album ever created. As close to perfection in recording and writing and vocals in metal that has ever been captured. Of all time. In every single possible way. Compare every recording to this as this album is THE bar. I’m grateful that this album exists it shows what is/was possible and I wish more albums were pursued this way. I wish Metallica had pushed even farther after this in perfection. Either way, the best metal album ever. Period.
It wasn't all scooped. It's actually a pretty flat tone. The Boogie is naturally scooped, and they did take out some mids in it, but added them back in with the Marshall. That's why the tone has that grind in the mids that's not very Boogie, and lacks the high end fizz of s Boogie.
Love this! One of the most difficult to replicate tones ever. The next video should be how to get the black album snare sound/drum sound next using VST's or real drums.
Anyone who says this album is not metal doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean it's not thrash anymore, but it's still metal. AJFA was no thrash album aswell.

all in that said, your rig sounds amazing
Sad but true being the exception was D standard. Bob Rock wanted them to experiment more.
The also tuned up to F standard on a couple songs.
@@TheCadegoodspeed45 …no.
@@fenixrizn8368 Dont tread on me = Eb and The god that failed = Eb.. Sad but true = D standard. I also cut my chops to this album :)
i love the tone in that album , sounds so sick
I'd love any Meshuggah album tone video, but Catch 33 is my favorite
When I was a kid, this was the album that introduced me to the world of metal. Before that I mainly listened to pop music and whatever my mom was into. This album changed that.
Quick remark: out of the 12 Songs on the record, only 2 are not in E standard. This one (D) and The God That Failed (Eb).
Damn! That black album tone works for everything. You had a really beefy sound. Nice video 🤘
ADA MP1 was surely definitively for rythm or leads. The distortion in this thing, with all the existing mods, is GLORIOUS.
I've always tried to figure out what role the MP1 played in their rig back then. I think you can definitely hear it in some of the lead playing on the album, but I'm still not sure what James was doing with it.
Yeah, had to be just for layers or overdubs/textures. James has talked a lot about how the Black Album was exclusively the JC120 for cleans.
The MP1 was in Kirks rack so was mainly for leads
*Opening up a video with* "Sad But True" *is what* Ola *makes a badass content creator.*
Im shocked at the fact that you played Enter Sandman riff incorrectly...
Thanks man awsome layout of black album tone.ROCK ON!!!
It Reminded me to the tone Nickelback used on their song "because of you" , very sick tone!
Ola always delivers quality content!
I don't care what anyone says the black album is a masterpiece. Their tone is legendary on this album.. you nailed it too 👏
The snare on that Album is absolutely beast.
@@birdsteak9267 legit
The snare sounds like a slap, but a slap i do enjoy compared to the frying pan in st.anger lol
All ideas can work, but usually a good idea to use it sparingly
the 'THE ONE' IR is the best one so far. thanks for that. cheers!
If you watch the Year and a Half In The Life of Metallica documentary they show building a big tent of foam around the speaker cab in the studio. Isn't Sad But True the only song in D, the rest being in E?
I thought they only did that for the bass since the strings getting plucked was being picked up by the mics
James’ “Tent Of Doom”…🤘🏻
The God That Failed is in Eb
I know it’s a solid state amp and would probably turn the nose up and the purists but damn it’s a killer amp!! Cheers from the US!! Peace
+1, work with this amp, Ola! I love the distortion from the VH-140C. You can tweak it for lower gains too but it shreds when the gain is cranked! Quite receptive to boosting with an overdrive as well.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz I agree. This amp has fallen out of popularity over time but it is indeed a one of a kind legendary amp. I’m lucky enough to own one that I bought almost 30 years ago and I love it still!!!
sweet tone. well done Ola
Great content, everything is truly amazing, I just I hope you reconsider your choice to film at 60p. I really enjoy more the more cinematic 24p. Great job as always 🤘🤘🤘
Finally somebody got it right. Of course should have known it would be Ola "king of the tones" Englund
A Metallica video that ends with a Dimebag riff. Perfectly sums up that era. Pantera took over at that point in time and Metallica was never the same.
And today, metallica is still killing it and pantera was never the same lol chill, love em both, gonna go see lamb of god and the new version of Pantera in August 🤘
@@healthywealthy4620I saw the same show and L.O.G. we're way better than that coverband Pantera.
@davidmurray6176 hell na lol I saw lamb of god back in 2006 which was brutal, but they played mostly new songs this time, didn't even play 11th hour, only like 1 song from as the palaces burn.
@@davidmurray6176 I'd rather hear Pantera with no original members than land of knobs.
Ops prob a phil fan over Dime lmao..Tallica "never the same" is some casual shit to say.
James juiced out the heaviness of d standard tuning to the fullest!
Cool!
It’d be fab to re-record the black album with the ”..And justice for all”-sound
on everything to see how it sounds
Or maybe the ”ride the lightning”-sound.
The demo versions have a pretty justice-y sound
Awesome video Ola, thanks for sharing the content!
The whole setup was quite complex with all the outboard gear they used
@@comand0Metalero1 it sounded reasonably close without the fx loop MXR EQ, I thought. But the recording techniques can make all the difference.
@@comand0Metalero1 It was in the ballpark, but too harsh on the high end for me. The album tone has a smooth blend with the bass and not so much presence & treble.
@@Syklonus That’s called mastering.
Yeah Bob Rock filled out the mids with a Marshall.
Bob Rock has gone on the record talking about how the structure of the room mattered a lot, including building wooden boxes and constantly moving mics. And yes the layering was crucial. James said they added a separate rhythm track called "the thickener"
What song did u play on 9:00? It sound fucking brutal, nice video ola!!
The Flood
Ola nails it here !! I saw this tour and the Metallica guns n roses stadium tour !!!!!!
Awesome!!
Damn!! been waiting for this for so long!!!
Now get ready to see the already crazy 2C+ prices skyrocket ... I own an original 1984 C+ and yes it does sound phenomenal but so do the mark III and IV. Also, for the Master of Puppets rhythm stuff, no marshall amps were used. All 2C+
Id rather get a JP head. It’s cheaper new than a used 2C+ lol
Imagine buying gear cause ola did one video about something lol.
@@Ottophil i imagine most consumers would watch other videos. Not everyone can try out specific gear at their local music store.
Through the never was one riff I didn't expect to hear, great video.
No matter what, Ola always has to play a Pantera riff at some point
11:01
Great vid Ola! Still one of the greatest tones ever, and you nailed it!
what song is he playing at 7:03?
The Haunted - Trespass
@@3amir126 far out
same question here
Really sounds great Ola your videos and guitar playing kick some ass!!
Vaya, es realmente asombroso!!!! Podrías recrear el tono de una banda llamada Persefone, es realmente grandiosa!!! Saludos desde México!!!
Ola: You are *THE RIFFMASTER* !!!! (When you played alone in the beginning).
You play those riffs so effortlessly, but they sound excellent!
riffmaster ? he wrote those riffs or what ?
The slaving a Marshall thing is a myth, Fleming himself says so in the Puppetz book and in the forums. He says it may have been for a couple of solos, if that 👍
100%..... his exact quote was:
“It is only on some solos we use the JCM 800 as poweramp. Most guitars are with the Boogie powerstage!”
And as for the Marshall connection with the Black album tone, it’s a cab running a Jose modded Marshall blended along with the Mark IIC/IV action through the multiple mikes into the single track that is “the tone”, nothing to do with the power section.
thank you !! especially for the explanation of the mesa preamp into the marshall amp!!
Period.
Havent tuned in, in a while. Set looks great.
Love those old Boogie amps. Friend of mine still has a combo from the 80's. Thing was LAF!!
I’ve got an early 90s mark IV put a tube screamer in front of that and it’s the best tone you’ll ever hear
There's NEVER a too Scooped tone . just need body under it like you have , And it sounds amazing slaved out. Nice job Ola
It wasn't all scooped. It's actually a pretty flat tone. The Boogie is naturally scooped, and they did take out some mids in it, but added them back in with the Marshall. That's why the tone has that grind in the mids that's not very Boogie, and lacks the high end fizz of s Boogie.
Anthrax Sound of white noise
Love this! One of the most difficult to replicate tones ever. The next video should be how to get the black album snare sound/drum sound next using VST's or real drums.
The only to get those drums is to literally be in the same room they were in
Anyone who says this album is not metal doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean it's not thrash anymore, but it's still metal. AJFA was no thrash album aswell.
Trespass sounds amazing no matter what tone you come up with or use, LOVE that song so much
