Amp & Cab Switcher fun today!
Definitely #2with#3 is my favorite Ola! Now play Whole Lotta Love...pretty please with lots of cherries on top!!!🍒🤘❤
So it's basically a real life Neural DSP plugin.
Waiting impatiently on the JP-2C Will It Chug!?! Video! Or review video? May I suggest since it's a Mark II C+, trying to get a Master of Puppets tone from it? Cheers!
Ola: thank you for going the distance for setting up this. This is probably a huge eye opener for most as I did not know how much a difference a cab could make! Thank you - you little PENIS friend.
@@michaelbertrand13 Ola has already done metallica tone with I'm pretty sure the C++ (spoiler alert) it's probably in my top 3 favorite amps and sounds insane!
Moral of the story, it’s better to have 4 cabs & 1 head that 4 heads & 1 cab.
yeeeep
Better have a really large room for that lol
Nah, just get the Mesa cab and 4 amps. That Engl really sounds like nothing else.
Word
True. Cab is visibly more important than amp.
Was seriously waiting for the moment when he says, "OK, enough is enough, ALL ON!!!!"
Yes! I'm not alone
Is that even possible?
I was waiting for that also lol.

Why would you waste so much time doing this when the video clearly states what amps and cabs are being used!
Like someone is really going to just go to a specific time to hear a certain cab and amp combo! They want to hear the comparison of the amps, wich is the point of the video!!
🤷🤷🤷🤷🤦🤦🤦🤦
@@ZYGTropicals I visit these comparisons regularly and constructed these time stamps in this format because they're more effective and efficient to use when comparing amp/cab combinations. Use the pre-constructed ones if it works for you.
@@ZYGTropicals because people (like myself included) that are in the market for a new amp/cabinet wanna hear the instant back to back comparisons. This guy is a hero and deserves more likes lol

Lol i like how he talks about the Mesa cab's sound and then realizes it was the ENGL XD
Ola Engloops
Believe me or not... since Gibson bought Mesa, more people will realize what a great brand ENGL is 😉 In my opinion one of the most satisfying brands when it comes to allrounder amps. Crystal Clean, punshy Crunsh, classic Rock, classic Heavy Metal, brutal modern Metal tones. 😃
@@MarcoBlumMusic I didn't have a chance to test a mesa or an engl but i love engl tones and i want an engl amp as my first real amp or tube amp, i definitely have the same toughts

What an awesome video, well played Sir
But no DSL 20hr ;)
I bought an EVH amp because of you! Your videos are amazing!
Benjamin Redman pls get vérified
When he thought he had the mesa cab engaged when it was actually the ENGL cab was proof of bias lol kinda funny to me
He spoke correctly just didnt have the right cabinet selected and he switches to the mesa cab as a result and the sound gets waaaay better.
@@BigTyronie ...I wouldn't say "waaaay" better. The Mesa is the best sounding of the 4, but the Engl was a close second. The Marshall and Fortin cabs were "waaaay" off, finishing a very distant third and fourth.
@@UKSportsFan Agreed . Initially I liked the Engl waaaaay better. THe Mesa and the Engl are neck and neck for me. Depending what head I'm using. If you don't have them next to each other each one is killer. 🤘🤘🤘
This is the Ola back in the days. Thats why we're hooked up to him
Marshall through Mesa cab was my absolute favourite.
Similar to the setup I used for over a decade. I concur.
Seriously 😳 That combo made me lean forward and go WTF?! Pleasant surprise!
Yup, it was my least favorite until it was played through the Mesa...
100 percent
Yep, me too. I use a Marshall el34 50/50 in stereo through modded Marshall and Mesa cabs, generally prefer the Marshall in my setup but it is using V30s and the Mesa is not
Great video. The Marshall into Engl cab totally blew me away. Didn't know Marshall could sound so nasty gritty and modern.
The fundamental thing that is proven in this video and not everyone considers: switching cabs with same amp makes a lot more difference than switching amps with same cab.
YES!
This right here!!!
de acuerdo
word- cab makes the biggest difference in tone. I realized that after getting crap tones from my Orange PPC 412 cab and using an Uberkab with different speakers. I would like to try Celestion Redback speakers in the Orange cab to see if that fixes things.
Mesa cab sounded the best
JCM into Mesa is my jam, fam
Not a fan of the Engl cab at all, but the Engl head through the Mesa was MASSIVE.
Same here, Engl head with Mesa cab sounds killer
This demostration was incredible, it answered alot questions I still had about all these amp heads and cabs and how they would sound switched around, but I'm SORRY, the Engl head and Mesa cab combination is most powerful complete balanced sound I've ever heard. This just answered my question thanks Ola.
The ENGL cab seems to have a harsher high end but also sometimes a weird "woobly" sort of noise around 100-250 hz I feel like. The Mesa does sound great all around though, here at least.
That was my favorite combo, too, but *also* the boosted JCM800 through the Mesa cab toward the end.
@@InGrindWeCrust2010 the boosted JCM with the mesa cab sounded amazing! Much better mids than the mesa head imo.
Most people don't realize the cab makes far greater sound difference, than simply using another high-gain amp ever can.
Same applies to the room. But that's not an easy task switching rooms )
The cabiney is more important than the head? I always thought it was the other way around! My Peavey all tube Valveking stack sounds like shit compaired to my buddy's solid state Randall, you're telling me if I were to swap the cab (and not the head) it would sound better?
@@wingnutmcspazatron3957 how loud are you running your VK? And what's the wattage? And what is your friend running?
Lol no no it doesn't 🤣
@@wingnutmcspazatron3957 More than likely.
Understand that your amp will sit there and hum without the speakers.
A really good cab and some properly chosen speakers will 100% change your sound for the better.
Marshall into Mesa cab sounded incredible... Great job Ola.
Man, I actually LOVED the sound of that ENGL cab, so fuckin' gnarly!
My favourite combo was the Engl amp with the Mesa cab. I have hardly seen any videos with different cabs like this which actually make a difference with distortion.
Omg engl amp and mesa cab is my dream now
And all this without wearing any shoes. What a legend.
Man, one more time the tests prove that the cabinet is really 90% of the guitar tone! God bless the IRs
Tone starts in the fingers .
I know that, but considering the same fingers, same guitar, same cables and switching amps and cabs, it is clear on the video that cab makes the most difference in the tone.
Sort of shocking, guess I have not had the luxury of anything even remotely approaching this level of A/B/C/D testing
The guitar is all about playability. A guitar that plays well will almost always sound good. Tone starts at the pickup. Your pickups, bridge mass and matrial and scale length and string material are 99% of you guitar tone. Your amplifier head is %70 of your overall sound with the cab accounting for %25 and everything else including overall guitar specs accounting for just %5
@@Giby321 all the greats say it's in the fingers. What does BB King SRV or Jimi know.? 😆 Educated yourself .
Hi Ola! I would like to see an Orange 4x12 against that Mesa Boogie Cabinet
+1

Every head sounds kick ass through the MESA cab.
I think that every head sounded their best through the MESA cab, but the ENGL sounded like crap to me. Strange, because I usually love their sound...shrug.
Agree! but the ENGL in the Engl cab is the total chunk-fest to me. Maybe its because volume is slightly higher also? Concerning the placement the Mesa cab is probably in best spot acoustically
Best money spent in my life
agree definitely best cab of the four. If I bought a new amp, I'd get the Mesa cab without a thought. I do like the Uberkab that sounds great but not in video.
you are absolutely right, although I like the Marshall Head n the Mesa cab together
Nicely done! That JCM800 kicks ass with a boost up front, man.
The Engl head with the Mesa cab sounds like pure aggression!
The Engl and Fortin cabs sounded like they were underwater though which I'm not a fan of
@@glenh2752 I would say the speakers are the #1 factor.
I have two 2x12 custom cabs 3/4 birch ply 18” deep. One with Chinese V30’s the other two I sourced through Mesa and are UK made V30’s.
The Mesa sourced Celestion V30’s are just that much bigger sounding.
ENGL into MESA cab for me. I've been waiting for these types of videos from you, I could watch hours of this.
This is how you do a Demonstration. Pure & Simple and not those who just play a thousand notes a second to show off..
Seriously man, not over produced and straight forward ... Thx DUDE!!
I'm sold on the MARSHALL head with the MESA cabinet 😃👍🏻🤟
This video really showcases the importance’s of Speaker Cabs when it comes to tone.
Cabs make a massive difference to your tone, and a lot of people, especially players new to tube amps, don’t realise the importance cabs make on bringing the best sound out of a tube head.
Excellent video Ola.
It’s crazy how much the cab makes a difference to the overall tone. Wow
maybe because it converts all the voltage to moving air.
I was surprised that when I went from a cheapish 2x12 to a Zilla 2x12, with the exact same speaker, that there was such a big change in the sound. Cabs seem to make the biggest difference in sound.
That's why the industry puts the emphasis on IRs.
@@setra23 Agreed. I went from a Marshall 4x12 to a Mesa 4x12 and have a Diezel 4x12 too. All with V30s and all massively different sounding.
@@InTheSh8 I read this and was like "what's a Dumkin"? 🤣 quickly realized it was Drumkit. 🤪
The ENGL cab with the Marshall and Mesa sounded huge. That and the Mesa cab were my favorites.
This is so awesome. Thank you for doing the research we all needed
Sick comparison! I'm blown away by the Marshall; wasn't expecting it to sound that good. Great to see/hear how much impact a cab has.
ENGL for me. Had the best bass response while remaining articulate. ENGL head through the Mesa was damn good sounding.
HELL YES
Day is never complete without Ola 🤘🏼
This is an excellent video. Ola is constantly pushing what it means to demonstrate gear on RUclips. What a fucking legend
Awesome compare and contrast between the amps and cabinets. Thanks for uploading and sharing.
I like the Engle amp with the Mesa cab most! Killer!
JCM through the Mesa cab gets my vote.
Why does the Fortin sound like someone calling collect to play their demo on a voicemail machine from 1992?
Just me perhaps...
Fortin is overrated in my opinion.
It's because the Mic is so far away from the Fortin Cab....he has it sitting right in front of the Mesa cab
Totally. Extremely versatile
@@craigharrison5406 Yep even placement of the room mic would change the tone drastically. Even where the amp is placed in the room can change the sound. Sounds bouncing back off walls can cause cancellations.
u sure it wasnt the ENGL cab? that was the one for me
It's hard to beat a boogie setup. I bought my MKIV in 1995 and it is still my favorite amp. However, I did buy the Engl Powerball II and it is badass as well through my boogie cab. Great video and we all appreciate you making these!
THIS is the content I've been waiting for! Thanks Ola!!!
im so happy, last night i was playing, with headphones on. the wife came through and said, 'will u stop chugging' i can hear ur doing the chug. The chug is alive people. spread the word. bring the chug to the masses.
The Recto half-stack, still the undisputed king of brutality. The ENGL head in the Recto cab was sweet af. The rest was just different but not better.
Rectifiers are way to flubby !!!
Way better options nowadays!!!
Even the JP mk2c+ is better than a rectifier!
A fully modded rectifier sounds pretty bad ass, but theirs so many better choices nowadays!
A 5150III is light years better!!! Super tight and doesn’t even need to be pushed like a Rectifier does.
Thanks Ola! Great Demo and awesome playin!😎
Awesome video! Ola you are so down to earth in your videos I enjoy watching them all. I have been trying to find a showdown video between the Traditional Mesa 4x12 and the Oversized 4x12. With that KHE, you could do the ultimate comparison. I also like how you played the same riff every time you switched the combinations, really shows the differences in sound. Keep up the great work.
Boosted Marshal sounds sick, kinda balanced EQ-wise when compared to other amplifiers.
I really have to say, that I prefer the ENGL cabinet. Somehow it has a "deeper" sound than the others. Best combination in my opinion was the Marshall head with the ENGL cabinet. What an awesome video anyways, just high quality content:)
Also I would like to hear the Orange amp into different cabinets
Marshall through the ENGL cab... my choice too bud. And I thought I’d prefer the Roadster through the Mesa cab 😂
I think the ENGL was too much for me; but I think the best sounds were Marshall + Mesa cab, and Marshall + ENGL cab, and right behind Mesa + Mesa, and Mesa + ENGL cab.
I think the ENGL cab gives you the extra punch, and of course the sound in the room would be totally different, but I think my favorite was Marshall + Mesa cab :)
Careful what you playback through. I played this through my excellent car stereo system. Mesa Cabinet was slightly better than Engl cabinet with a bit more headroom. Both cabinets sound good though.
Yes Engl amps are good but I prefer the ability to have less compression which is really impossible to dial out of an Engl. I would bet adding compression to the Mesa would surprise people. Too me the Mesa is more versatile. The Engl gets that certain sound without the need of pedals though. I can see where people prefer it. But if you play a multitude of genres, it is hard to beat a Mesa Roadster or Roadking II. The Mesa Badlander is great for modern Metal though.
@@christebo7305 I used my audio technica headphones, but you are right. The audio device changes the sound of course:)
We need more of these videos Ola! While digital modelers and plug-ins are definitely improving each year (I am overwhelmed with option paralysis by having so many digital toys) these kind of videos are authentic as F***! Thanks
This is easily in the top 5 helpful videos you have in your vast library of video content, every music store that sells amp should have this Amp Cab switcher. IMO the Engl XXL cab sounded the best for sweet metal riffage
A blend of the Marshall and Mesa heads would crush in any mix.
That's what Metallica's Black album was. Believe Mark iii and Marshall jcm800
@@gabrielabers5119And Master of Puppets
So much GAS for the marshall sound lately. The 800 is a legend for a reason.
This was such a Rad video. Thanks Ola.
Great explanation... never saw such way of amp & cab comparison !
I’d love to hear a 5150 through those 4 cabs. Also, a Mark series Mesa.
I liked JCM800 the most. Best amp to my ears.
This is, I think, the f*ing best amp and cab comparo I've seen. I wouldn't have thought that, even with the same speakers, how different the cabnets would sound... and how the same the amp heads did! I learned something today boys... re-thinking some gear here... Metal!!!
Brilliant! Awesome Ola! 🤘🤘
My own theory is that while yes, 80% of the sound comes from the cabinet I think the cabinet is a filter that you get used to hearing a guitar sound through. I think that's why once you find a cab or impulse you really like anything can sound amazing through it and then every other cab or impulse just sounds wrong in comparison. I theorise that the cabinet you end up having the most real life experience with is the one you get used to and thus keep coming back to it. I think that's why a lot of metal guys love Mesa cab's so much, most of us buy one pretty early on and just get used to it. For me I used and Orange for most of my founding years and everything; to me, just sounds 'right' through and Orange cab or impulse.
I'll used an analogy of colour grading and film. The cabinet is like the colour grade that sets the mood of the scene while the amp head is more like the actors in the film. The actors can change their emotions and actions scene to scene, but the colour grading always invokes the same mood where-ever it is used.
Great analogy.
I think that you are right although I thought that the ear has no memory per se. Thoughts?
Great theory. For some reason I always gravitate to a Marshal B cab. It was the first cab that caught my ear. And anything I play through it sounds like “my tone” if that makes sense.
@@nitromeda Well, the brain certainly can remember sounds? Think right now of like, the sound of a shower running, and you'll hear it clearly in your mind.
@@bobtheatog Makes perfect sense. The same experience I have with Orange
Awesome new gear. Congrats. That Marshall head with engl cab sounded awesome. You definitely showed why Mesa is one of the go to cabs for metal with about any head combination.
Great video! I just got my KHE a few weeks ago and it’s incredible.
Never really hear people using alnico speakers for metal. That Marshall sounded KILLER
I'd love to see some Orange Cab with a Mesa or Engl Amp. Sounds massive!
I run a mess boogie mark IV with an orange 4x12 and trust me when I say it’s a pantie dropper. Chuck an overdrive in there and it is absolute heaven.

I'm liking the Mesa cab. I'd like to hear that cab with an EVH Stealth Head!😳🤘🤘🤘
Awesome comparison, I was wondering about how the fortin amp sounded against other amps and this really helped
The Mesa cabinet rocks. Goes very well with the Marshall and Engl head, too.
0:03 When you forget why you came to the room...
Suggestion: Mesa Roadster vs Mesa Badlander 🤟
Would be more interesting to see the Road King against the Badlander.
The RK has 4 6L6s and 2 EL-34s and you can assign 2 6L6, 4 6L6, 2 EL-34 and 4 6L6+2 EL-34 per channel.
So it would be easy to compare it to the Badlanders since they ship with EL-34s.
You can throw in EL-34s in the Roadster but you can’t have both types at the same time.
The roadster with the Mesa is an effin monster!.. Love the Engl sound as well...
Amazing video my good man this video really shows you what a huge difference in tone the cap makes
I think all the amplifiers sound better through the Mesa cabinet. Especially the Marshall amp. I was just wondering how Marshall cabinet would sound like with the original speakers. Thank you Ola for great content and great channel!!
Late comment here, but I agree with you that every amp sounded best through the Mesa cab. The Marshall kinda surprised me the most 😊
This is awesome, it's like the little guy who lives inside my Helix who switches my amps and cabs/IRs while I create presets, only recreated to be (above average) human sized!
very cool. i run a jcm 800 2203 with os mesa cab with green backs on top and v30's on the bottom. love it
Really cool video and comparisons. Thanks for your efforts! Its hard to choose a flavor, they all have a characteristic I can appreciate.
Mesa sounds so deep and perfectly balanced
This is an interesting video, and my favourite cabinet was the mesa. But my experience is, that in a band context, with drums and bass beside you, everything can be different. Frequencies that you like, when playing an amp alone, can be the frequencies, that get lost when the bass is playing. And frequencies, that are too agressive, when playing alone, can be the ones that keep your guitar sound from drowning in band context....... Never ending story
Awesome. What exactly is your point? Should I not et the Mesa?
I think the Marshall and the Engl both sound awesome through the Mesa cab. Cool demo. Thanks
This is the best amp and cabinet comparison video I've ever seen👌
The Engl head through the Mesa cab sounds amazing!
Now Ola needs and Orange PPC412-C and a and an EVH 5150 III Stealth
The Mesa setup just does it for me. It sounds so good.
Very helpful video, thanks for doing this! Personal favorite - Fortin into the Mesa cab. When it's all said and done, the cab and speakers seem to have the most influence over the sound.
this school lesson became a lot more fun suddenly :)
Everybody on this peninsula would hate me if I had that set up.
ENGL Savage 60 through the Mesa Cab has that punchy Metal Tone with clear and yet saturated gain that I love. I play through a Peavey XXX Head going into a Vintage Handwired 1960A Marshall Cab in the studio, and I love that tone of American combined with British. Perfect Metal Tone in my eyes. Awesome Video Ola! Hell Yeah Man!🤘🏻🤘🏻
That Engl with the Mesa cab was awesome
That engl sound so good god damn i really want one. I hate being broke
Same here. That's why I use modelers and IRs. The same sound (in a mix) on a budget + you don't have to drag these backbreaking gear around.
I think this is the first time I've seen a comparison like this, and I now see why the Mesa cabs are so hyped. It's so much beefier than all the others.
I have a Recto 4x12 (V30) and it makes any head sound deep and dark.
It matches perfectly with the DSL20.
cause the mic is sitting in front of it 😭

Love my KHE 4x2 ACS. I cannot imagine going back to doing it the old school way. Also, Markus is THE MAN!
Oh yeaaah! JCM800 through the Mesa cab us pure awesome. Also the Engl through Mesa cab has a wicked grit.
All four amps sounded killer in the Mesa Cab. I liked every amp in the Engl cab better than the Engl in the Engl. I think the Fortin into the Mesa or the Marshall into the Engl was my favorite!
Are you serious!?! The Fortin was by far the worst sounding amp out of them all!!!
