I feel similarly about the tampon comment, too. Lots of young people, specifically young girls, are not taught about their bodies, or fed outright misinformation about their development. I remember feeling deeply ashamed, disgusted, and scared by what was happening to my body during puberty, and I consider myself to be very, VERY lucky that I had a family that was both open-minded and informative. Many young people are not so lucky. Girls coming from conservative families are often taught that their bodies functioning as they ought to during a normal stage of development is a sign that they're dirty in some way, and in many cases, are outright told that tampons are inherently sexual (they absolutely aren't!) and that using them makes you "impure" in some way.
Having a beloved RUclipsr confirm this horrifying belief, even jokingly, in addition to making sexual abuse from a family member seem like a joke, is unbelievably dangerous for a kid. Christ alive.
Edit: almost forgot about the subtle homophobia here and there! Not terribly surprising, and certainly not the first piece of children's media be homophobic, but again...yikes. :(

To anyone who might think this wasn’t calculated and intentional:
I was groomed online at the age of 13. It all started with him making innuendos as “jokes” and dropping inappropriate words in conversation; he wouldn’t outright tell me to look at pornography or explain WHAT these words meant, but he repeatedly referenced them and put them out there so they were in my mind. If I asked him what it meant, he’d just respond with “it’s funny because it’s adult and edgy, your parents just don’t want you to know adult humor”. It only escalated from there, and once he had conditioned me, I didn’t question any of his comments and requests because he taught me that it was all “just funny jokes” and that he wouldn’t do any of the awful things he did in seriousness.
Even if it isn’t in the context of “hey kids, go to this website and watch porn!”, it’s STILL a calculated tactic of grooming children. If anything, hiding these references between innocent children’s activities and jokes is a telltale sign that Colleen is trying to normalize these themes to kids. To unaware children reading this book, all the references blend together and they view EVERYTHING in this book as something that’s okay for them to see. This woman is absolutely sick.

Funny, IMHO: When adults pretend to be child characters for an adult audience, and the point of the joke is that children can be annoying and weird (to adults) and/or that they don't understand the adult world. IMHO, the perfect skit in this regard will ideally cause us to sympathize with both the adults and the child simultaneously in different ways.
Unfunny and annoying: Adults acting like kids for a child audience. I hate it because kids love it, and then they end up repeating the most irritating bits ad nauseam.
Unfunny, mean, and cringe: Adults acting like undeniably-neurodivergent-coded kids, where the joke is just that "weirdness" is fundamentally bad.

I'm autistic, and many of her experiences reflected my own because I was often socially unaware and felt like I was living in my own world. I'm now 17 and looking back, I realize that the character Miranda Sings wasn't meant to be relatable, but meant to make fun of me.
Although this isn't as bad as most of her other allegations, I felt like it was important to point out another thing she did that was harmful. While there were people who related to Miranda and found her comforting, everyone else was laughing at her, and people like me were never in on the joke. It really highlights many of my experiences feeling like I'm doing everything right but somehow I'm still "weird" or "offputting" and never in on the joke no matter how hard I tried. Just a pet peeve of mine: I hate when books targeted at children have misspelled words and grammatical errors. Children's books is how I learned to spell both in my native language and English, so I think we should leave that "joke" to the adult audience which already know the proper spelling. Also, I know the market for kids is profitable, however this book is clearly written for people in their 16 (maybe?) and over.

I was born without very strong romani features, my skin is a bit darker than my friends, and most people in my country, and (I am sorry I can't explain it well) my face could pass as a white non mixed, non roma person, but if you look at me more observingly, you can see that I am in fact mixed. In a somewhat cruel irony, the weird racism many European countries have against Roma people leaked into my own country by cultural osmosis, but people got confused and mixed up Roma and Romanians. As a result a bunch of people have negative stereotypes about Romanians that clearly were originally about Roma. Actual Roma are largely ignored, besides in a couple cities where the Roma community is associated with begging. Very strange, if a bit sad that people still hold these prejudices.

I disagree about the teenager part. The way colleen is doing it is in a groomer way, but you also can't treat a 16 year old like they're the same as a 10 year old. In a book, it's appropriate to talk about sex in the context of the characters themselves having conversations about it. So there is a healthy way to approach the topic. In 6th grade my friends were super into Miranda Sings (I didn't watch her but I used the "Miranda Sings voice" to make them laugh, which is horribly unfunny in hindsight) and one day one of them bought Selp-Helf, and brought it to school. We all huddled in the back of the classroom reading through the pages for the first time, and when it got to the menstruation section the owner of the book blushed and slammed the book closed. A couple of the moms found out what we had been reading, and the owner of the book got into huge trouble for reading such an inappropriate book. At the time we saw it as this huge injustice, of adults "not getting it", but looking back on it, yeah we shouldn't have been reading that.

As a person working with kids in an Elementary school, who has had tons of abuse/neglect/questionable training. The book as you describe up until the 18-minute mark is mostly pre-grooming types of behavior which include vaguely inappropriate comments or topics, and engaging in "naughty" topics to see if the receiver is open to questionable ideas or behaviors. This is how a predator finds out which child is vulnerable. It is, in fact, something that I as a Paraeducator have been taught to watch out for as a pattern in the other adults with whom I work. Predators do end up in many positions associated with children so they can have access to their prey. It is incredibly disturbing to see this book being put out by a major company. I am aware of some of the controversy surrounding the author and this makes me think the author is definitely a danger to vulnerable children and young adults. Honestly. I didn't even start the video. I try to stay FAAARRRRR away from these topics because I lived too close to them. This kind of stuff went on in my house, it went on in my close extended family, my parents have stories about crap like that going on over GENERATIONS on one side of my family, and even today as an adult we've had an uncle AND another cousin (unrelated to the afore mentioned lot) go to jail for such things.
I've had family sleepovers where at 10 I would wear a belt and jeans to bed to be "less easy access" not realizing that my cousin next to me had actually been a victim already. I KNEW what was going on, and IDK how I made it out of that shit untouched.
This Coleen shit has been a roller coaster ride and the best thing she could have done for herself is NOT put out that stupid apology song. At first I was like "Ok, she was inappropriately talking about personal issues to children. Creepy for sure... over the line potentially... hmm..." then I find out about Miranda Sings and I was like "Gosh I hope this isn't one of those youtubers that sings in cartoon character impressions? :C ", then I started learning about the character and was like "..... so this is obviously an adult channel right? This is dark humor aimed at adults? And parents just weren't paying attention to--" BUT NO IT'S FOR KIDS?!?!? DID NOBODY LOOK AT IT BEFORE GREEN LIGHTING IT?!?! I've only seen couple second clips and I won't watch any more than that. Even if it were adult aimed dark-humor I've got a low tolerance but knowing that crap was being MARKETED TO KIDS. No. It takes me to a dark place I don't want to be... and that's just me being close to it... not actually a victim of it...

The dog story is messed up yet I can see how a child in that situation could not comprehend that the dog would be put down, unless she she wanted the dog dead and did this to kill him, it is something that is a horrible thing, yes, but I don't see how that incident = her killing animals as a child, let alone it being a pattern. It just to me seems like an outrageous story that may have been traumatic that she tells as a way to perhaps process the past. It might be intentional because she does have so much intent behind plenty of her allegations, or I may also be projecting my own trauma/similar ppl I know, etc. ETC.
Either way this book his horrific and is like a horrible art project that should receive an F and the student being sent to the school psychologist, that goes for every freaking educational environment/age. What's the dissertation of this project? If she was truly processing her own trauma, no one is owed to share that with anyone, yet it's bizarre to me for her to be this explicitly open and if she is influenced by her own or family trauma, I see how hard it would be to be transparent about that influence with the public and keep a relationship with her family, yet does she ever almost go there? Say this comes from a dark time in my life, etc. ETC.??? What is the influence for her Characater? Does she ever say that publicly or in exposed DMs???

I feel like someone was wildly inappropriate with her as a child and she has no concept of age appropriate behavior or boundaries between kids and adults. It’s no excuse, but just possibly a look into how this behavior repeats, and sometimes the victim turns around to perpetuate the same stuff on someone else.

I was reading another comment that pointed out that a lot of the stuff in the book (wetting your pants past a certain age, the thing about how to deal with blood in your poop, the creepy uncle jokes, etc) is very reminiscent of sexual abuse. Considering her upbringing in purity culture, it wouldn't surprise me if she perhaps has some unresolved trauma.

Idk, but I don't trust someone who is obsessed with "purity", sex is natural and should be talked about in a HEALTHY and EDUCATIONAL way.

The uncle jokes are the most disturbing and problematic part to me for SO many reasons. Listen, I love dark and crude humor. I really do. But you CANNOT mess around with that stuff when it comes to children who don’t get that it’s supposed to be a joke. Most child sexual abuse cases involve a family member. What if a child reading this book is experiencing something similar at home? This book makes jokes out of it, diminishes it, and NORMALIZES this behavior. That must be so incredibly confusing for children who have been abused in this way and it’s so fucking bizarre to me that children are the target audience of this book.

The uncle jokes are absolutely abhorrent. I feel like the only way a kid would get the 'jokes' would be if they'd lived it, at which point they're seeing their experience- that they might not even fully understand- laughed at and mocked.

When you think about all the gross and inappropriate jokes in the context of the uncle jokes, it just gets really sad becaise the over arching joke is that miranda or someone she knows is being abused by the uncle. This situation would cause problems like wettinf your pants past the age you would expect. It gets darker with joke like tampon joke where that part is only for exit with talking about how to deal with blood in your poop. Which could be something someone who has physical trauma from rape could experince. Like the overarching story that is being suggested in Miranda's life is REALLY DARK. and i just dont think thats something that kids should be exposed to through satire of a girl trying to make sense of her familial sexual trauma in purity culture.

Kids section of book stores and Netflix, even! but when you look just BARELY beneath the surface, just give it barely a second glance, its horrific and even terrifying. Its normalizing disgusting and horrible things. Its teaching kids horrible things, and worse, grooming them. And people took far, far too long to notice their children were being harmed, all because it was packaged in bright colors.
