- On 1 July in 1989 IRA terrorists murdered Norman Annett, 56, off duty RUC police Constable, shot at 9pm, as he made a weekend visit to his widowed mother, near Garvagh, Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
Murderers shot Constable Annett`s mother, aged 81, in the abdomen as she intervened, but Mrs Annett managed to crawl to the telephone.
Constable Annett had been attacked in a pub in 1971, on Donegall Road in Belfast. On that occasion a shot narrowly missed his head and grazed his face. It was reported that customers helped stop the earlier attack in the pub.
Constable Annett was a month from retirement and the longest RUC service medal holder.
