In a "60 Minutes" interview with Katie Couric, Grammy Award-winning singer Norah Jones talks about her musical style and the unique sound of her voice.
I love how honest she is. She doesn’t seem to have any sort of ego which is so refreshing. The way she says that she doesn’t have the kind of voice that can sing all sorts of octaves and high notes, but she’s OK with that she knows her lane and she sticks to it. I just love her so much.
She started that singing tone and style... then almost every goddamn up-and-coming female singer tries to emulate it. It's getting ridiculous. It's not even their natural singing styles!
Twoclaw actually that was common from older singers. Listen to Brenda Lee for example. It's just from the 70s onward the focus became on range. Then now a lot of females try to do that soft tone w a slight British phrasing.
Hard to say that I "like" the interview...I didn't really appreciate Katie's questions, and to me her comments seemed more like they were critical of Norah's style. I just think she could have chosen her words better. Norah's voice is so beautiful and unique, which Katie pointed out the "uniqueness" of it, but made it seem almost like a bad thing. Huh. Oh well. To each their own.
It’s not simple music it’s beautiful music full of colours and moods .. It’s like the colours of a rainbow telling different stories.. It’s mesmerising.
It's so refreshing to hear a singer that focusses onsubtlety, nuance and tone and that sings the tune without wanting to bore us silly with off their vocal licks...
Norah is a very very simple woman, I love her songs and her too! She is humorous too, what I find the best in her is her facial sadness that depicts me her deep thoughts in something.. I dont know in what!. But I love her, just as she is... Not to marry, not to have, not to anything else...just like a wish to have a moon on the sky... I know, I cant have it! ... and I woul'nt either... Great songs Norah. Malik
This is quite the nostalgia trip. But I must also express how annoying it is seeing multiple people go on about her father. She's not his daughter, OK. He was HER father. She's 45 and I daresay already, she's been a bigger influence generally, in the music industry. Without her, say goodbye to most of the other singer/songwriters who suddenly found greater success because labels were more willing to give them a shot. They can thank Norah selling near 17 million albums in her first year, for that. She opened the door for SO MANY OTHERS. And, she's BETTER than most all of them too. She's been a part of at least 3 or 4 major side bands and collaborated with several hundred other great [and a few not so great] musicians in her 23 year career. Her music has featured in many high profile films, and she's even done a spot of acting herself. And she's won far more awards and accolades than the 9 grammies from her first 2 years. To round all this up, she's ONE HECK of a musician, and far more than just her fathers daughter, and it's high time the IDIOTS who keep bringing that up, accepted it, and stopped insulting what Norah has accomplished.
Hey, did anybody else notice that Katie has a more raspy voice that Norah? So does Katie know from experience about smoking and drinking Scotch? But really folks, Katie is smart, so the producers must be forcing her to "dumb down" her interview. It is such a shame, 'cuse I was left hungering for the answers to smarter questions! I am fascinated with Norah and would really like to know so much more. Norah is so impressive in so many ways. All the best for Norah Jones!
Norah is a double edged sword. She made this style of signing popular, for her it was authentic and very lovely, it’s her true unique voice. Then the indie girls started popping out the hedges trying to sound like this and they all sound like nails on a chalkboard
I just almost pissed myself laughing when the interviewer said "when they do all the virbato..." 10 to 1 she didnt know what the frog she was talking about until a day before the interview, when the producer explained, or something. Or maybe she has used her 'virbator' a bit toot much right before the show. Whatta mistaka to maka..
Her talent, style and feeling is amazing. Playing Flute for years. it would be simply amazing to colaborate with her on something... just for pure enjoyment.
oh my. Couric sucks in this interview!!! She is trying to seem like she knows music -- while she's sitting in front of the one of the most NATURAL musicians working today. how could she be so damned patronizing to Norah!! Norah showed great restraint. 'Norah's voice, 'not clear'??? what the hell is she smoking. Norah can produce a 'clear' phrase like nobody's business!!!
Katie Couric is so bad in this interview it's offensive. She botched it big time, but since Norah Jones is perfect, I'm not surprised with how well she dealt with those stupid questions.
I want to say to nsra1933, you are a disgrace to this country using that kind of language. It occurs to me that when people need to revert to vulgarity, they are probably not very well spoken, or they would be better able to express their feelings in a more intelligent way. Katie Couric, along with Nora Jones are two women all American girls can look up to as role models. Can't say the same for nsra1933.
at 2:07 she sounds and looks somewhat like julia roberts. i think norah jones is the most gifted singer and the most talented. she has such a great voice and shes not raspy at all....
Funny. She sure fucked with Comes Love. It's on RUclips, check it out. I'm a big fan of Miss Holliday and Miss Mitchell, but Miss Jones nailed it, and there's not a note she sings that's on the sheet music.
"if a martian landed and wanted to know what your lyrics are like what would you say" Your music is so unimportant seeing you dont sing anything that is with true importance.
glad to see others were not happy with this interview, I thought it was rotten, on Norahs stile that katie should have been more complimentary it sounded like a vague insult to me. I think most people agree Norahs stile is unique as in superb.
The interviewer wanted her to mock contestants of AGT, but Jones is too classy. She also knows that it takes a lot of skill to be doing all the melisma as it is called, albeit it can overdone often times. She admits that she isn't capable of doing it herself, which takes a lot of insight into own skillset.
Oh, I think your wrong about that. She "could" if she ever really "wanted" to. But then she's savvy enough to know that the natural voice that she was lucky enough to be born with, is better than what most others could ever hope to accomplish through years, sometimes decades of practice. And It's not like Norah has not HONED her natural talent, because she has. [Listen to her today in 2024, and hear just how much overall control and strength and depth there is in her voice]
@@Requiemslove Could what, if you don't mind me asking? She says; "I can't do all that stuff, because I don't have that kind of voice". I think she is particularly referring to melismas and trills. Some voices have more of a knack for moving about in an agile sense, than other voices.
@@ragnarkisten Specifically that she could if she wanted to, learn to sing that way. Of course your right, she say's those words, but I'm unconvinced about the reason she does. The over-riding impression I always had about Norah Jones from back in those days, was how she always seemed embarrassed about her talent. As if she felt that she had too much, more than she had a right to. So, rather than explain that she doesn't "need" to sing like that, she would rather say that she can't, that it's beyond her, that she doesn't have that kind of voice, that she is in fact, human. As for why I think she could learn to sing that way if she wanted to, it's because she's hardly what you would call a "typical" talent. She set a world record in 2003 that would last for the better part of a decade, when her debut album achieved near 17 million record sales. I don't know about you, but I would rather not doubt the abilities of a musician such as that, and I have absolutely no problem in expressing my personal belief that Norah Jones could accomplish anything she sets her mind to, in the world of music.
Wow, Norah handled that fiasco with grace and class. How many times did she save the interview from being a catastrophe?Have seen Norah in other interviews and she is always funny and interesting. She seems to be as beautiful and real as her music .
Go onto her official website. Check out Norah's "playing along with" podcasts. Only, she's the one doing the interviewing, but she answers what her guests [most of whom are also musicians] asked her.
so pretty. and even her speaking voice is like honey.
Norah, makes me smile incessantly. She's beautiful anyway, and her classiness just doubles her attractiveness.
I love how honest she is. She doesn’t seem to have any sort of ego which is so refreshing. The way she says that she doesn’t have the kind of voice that can sing all sorts of octaves and high notes, but she’s OK with that she knows her lane and she sticks to it. I just love her so much.
I agree!
From what I have seen in this interview.
She would be an healthy women to date.
One of the best female voices in the music industry
OF ALL TIME!
[Sorry, couldn't resist]
She started that singing tone and style... then almost every goddamn up-and-coming female singer tries to emulate it. It's getting ridiculous. It's not even their natural singing styles!

Norah is such a gem, I did not think that Katie quite "understands" her qualities enough to do a good interview. She did not get the essense of Norah.
She's just a pure unpretentious woman, Norah is my type of girl :D
What a beautiful lady and so talented!
It’s not simple music it’s beautiful music full of colours and moods .. It’s like the colours of a rainbow telling different stories.. It’s mesmerising.
She is the daughter of Ravi shankar! She is as talented as her father but in a different way
Miss Nora your singing voice is beautiful the way it is
It's so refreshing to hear a singer that focusses onsubtlety, nuance and tone and that sings the tune without wanting to bore us silly with off their vocal licks...
Norah Jones.. What a personality, what a voice! AND she's beautiful. And carries herself brilliantly considering the success she's had.
She´s a beautifull girl. Muito bonita and inteligent too. She would sing and play Bossa Nova. Then the miracle would be completed. At last!
'you want to make sure you're not messing with the song, just for the sake of messing with the song' EVERYONE ON DUMB TV SHOWS TAKE NOTE.
Wow, KC is so annoying. She probably doesn't know who she was interviewing.
My life without Norah is harder.
Beautiful soul. And wow she's fine! Lol
I'm inlove with HER !! Big respect from Poland

Malik
looks like rachel mcadams
es verdad!pero ella es mas linda.que rachel.
Yeah she does, well, abella anderson too haha..
Did she just tell Norah Jones...
to smoke cigarettes and drink scotch? lmao
Norah I love you and I'm sure Katie is an excellent person, way to come down to her level for a moment.
me encanta la separaciòn que tiene en las muelitas de adelante "
U_U
She has a voice that is best describes as... warm water pouring over ice... soothing... What Angel's might be like... kinda.

did she just say "raspy" ?
cigarettes and scotch?
does katie always interview like this?
Slow-burn jazz-americana is how I would describe Norah Jones' music.
She's awesome- they both are...but i thought that was just an awkward interview...maybe not?
Curic is phony
Tom Waits. She dropped the name. Always loved her and now one more notch up. Bless you, Norah!

i love norah.

By the way, the interviewer is Katie Couric. And yes, this interview is annoying. I hate Katie Couric.
Katie Couric, like Walters, has no insight into the human mind.
Thank You! It was just waaaay too much time spent on Norah Jones vocal analysis. Who cares how she describes her own voice. Move On!
Katie Couric was not the right person to interview such a great artist.
She make me feel like i had some type of connection with her in past like
Ok nobody is as beautiful as Norah
I know Katie Couric did not come for Mariah.
It blows me away that this video said 17 yrs ago.
Nora Jones is a good singer and she is so beautiful.
I love Norah. I can’t stand Katy
loved the short interview.. bout real music stuff
hahaha.. the interiewer has NO idea what she's talking about... hahahaha... she keeps trying to put words in her mouth.. very frustrating interview.
oh my. Couric sucks in this interview!!! She is trying to seem like she knows music -- while she's sitting in front of the one of the most NATURAL musicians working today.

i like being simple. It's really simple.
Katie Couric is so bad in this interview it's offensive.
She botched it big time, but since Norah Jones is perfect, I'm not surprised with how well she dealt with those stupid questions.
I know what vibrato is; she just prenounced it "virbato" which someone who knows what vibrato is wouldnt do. I guess.

her voice is NOt raspy.
SUBTLE TRUE + MATURE
yeh what a weirdo woman this interviewer is - she's obsessed with asking weird questions! Norah remains very positive and polite, all credit to her.
Also... Katie's voice sounds doctored and Norah's voice does not. I mean Katie sounds like she is down some pipe somewhere.
Funny. She sure fucked with Comes Love. It's on RUclips, check it out.

katie couric is very unflattering in the way she asks her questions.
"Verbado" @ 2:56??? WTF is verbado Katie? I'm starting the petition to fire Katie Couric! Who's in?
glad to see others were not happy with this interview, I thought it was rotten, on Norahs stile that katie should have been more complimentary it sounded like a vague insult to me. I think most people agree Norahs stile is unique as in superb.
what mistake? vibrato is that regular pulsating pitch change like you hear with alot of new artists :)
RASPY!?!?!?!? Would it hurt Katie to listen to some of her music BEFORE she interviews her?
Haha she was in Ted
If space was real and there was down as well as up I'd want such a question about beings in space to be whispered politely and not.......
Gente Simple?? HEY HEY HEY!! haha Adoro tu musica!

i just fell in love
Norah reminds me somewhat of The Late and Great, Miss Billie Holiday.
@PRroppaboi PJ harvey
I love how she plays the piano and sing ❤
I was just gonna post that very same thing.
Norah Jones rocks! I wish she was interviewed by a musician or a journalist with Music background, it was painful to watch 🙁
Go onto her official website. Check out Norah's "playing along with" podcasts. Only, she's the one doing the interviewing, but she answers what her guests [most of whom are also musicians] asked her.
Questions are to smart to interviev listeners......
Throwing shade on Mariah, LOL
She's not yet married.
Katie's tone is bordering on patronizing
shes 23 years old here
No she was 28. This was a 2007 interview and she was born in 1979
Ah, come away with me. ❤❤❤
