Learning about some of the limitations of the game has made me more optimistic, actually. BGS is a big studio and they've been working on this game for a long time, but they don't have infinite resources. Just from a quick google, BGS has 420 employees, RSI 600, CDPR 1000, and Rockstar 4,800.* We've all seen games which try to do everything and the result is endless delays or worse. The big question is did they efficiently spend those resources on things which make the game fun to play (for me).
Having a smaller number of planets, many of which are pretty simply procedurally generated and barren, having a pretty simple flight model, not having seamless flight from land to space, etc. Should have saved a lot of effort which has hopefully been spent on the things which make Bethesda games fun. When they were first showing off the huge size of the game I was a bit worried but I think they can pull this off. I hope.
    * Yeah those numbers don't tell you all that much. Different numbers of those employees are involved in game production. They work on multiple projects at once with varying numbers assigned to each. They have contractors and contracted third party studios, etc.

However, most tend to claw their way back to acceptable, but it can take time. That said, I am indeed waiting anxiously for this one, as Bethesda does tend to put together some interesting sandboxes to play in. But what really sells me is Bethesda's commitment to the modding community, and how that will play out with this title. I can imagine, and in some cases have even heard rumblings, that a good number of modders are chomping at the bit to get their hands on this one. The potential should be (no pun intended) astronomical. Looking forward to this one.

I'm glad you put emphasis on "Not a simulator." That's crucial for those looking to invest. It's an RPG at its core. That we expect the following:
    1. No lateral or vertical thrusting - I have seen no evidence of either. The flight model may more resemble No Man's Sky, or Star Wars: Squadrons.
    2. No physics mode - No assistance off/ decoupled (Newtonian) modes.
    3. No free flight space flight mode - It might just be that you only go to space as a means of going to a new destination, or an objective. Possibly not unlike Destiny's "Return to orbit" option, or Mass Effect's cutscenes of your ship leaving the port and exiting to space, where you then choose on the map your new destination. Space flight may only occur when you have a mission to track a target, or situation to load into.
In a nutshell? Starfield may just be a Skyrim, whereby the means of travelling to another planet is met with a space flight cutscene or loading screen and you are then dropped into a holding area called "space" with your ship seemingly traveling, until you choose a destination to transition to on foot. It's possible it may not even be as dynamic as No Man's Sky's handling of ship to space transition. That said? Until I see/ hear exactly how it works, depends on how quickly I throw down for this game. Just another Skyrim? I can wait a few months. Full-on space to ground flight? I'm in right now.

  • @jetind
    @jetind Год назад

I am pretty convinced that the lack of any (mentioned) land vehicles is for a good reason: no seamless transition between land tiles.
They have mentioned how they can procedurally generate these land-tiles, which are then "wrapped around" a planet. But I have never heard them say anything about travelling seamlessly between landtiles. So I expect that we can't.
Picking a landing spot means picking a tile. And the landing/takeoff option then works as a teleport (=loadingscreen) between that landtile and space. Same as a door teleported you inside/outside of a room in skyrim. This was called "scenes" (IIRC, or was it "world spaces"?) in the creation-kit, so the core design would actually fit. I expect we will either have to take off and land again in order to go to another landtile, even one right next to the current one - or, the edge of one landtile teleports you to the next tile.
Of course, I don't know how large these tiles are, so maybe not a big problem. But I expect you would just hit an invisible wall at some point.
Adding land vehicles would only make players hit it sooner - so we don't get them.
Adding atmospheric flight, sooner still - so we don't get that either.
So I fear this is an architecural limit, which can't just be modded in, or added as a DLC. Hope I am wrong, though.
It would not totally ruin my experience, though. I just hope everyone keeps their expectations in check on this issue.

Why did they chose to not create a practical ship and use that to demonstrate how the gameplay systems all work together? They could have turned the starter ship into something like a dedicated bounty hunter and shown us the non-lethal detainment of a criminal from contract acceptance to detainment and delivery to prison. But they didn't. They showed us a lady who likes to make ships that look like platypuses, and we got a giant mech ship. I don't get it, and it makes me a bit wary.

To me that makes the whole "1000 planets" pretty redundant. I'd much rather have 3 - 5 planets that are fully explorable and have multiple cities etc within one solar system. You're just hopping between different places and in the end the gameplay is going to be about going across the solar system to another planet just to get some different resource, and that's gonna take 10 minutes to do + waiting for some long loading screens most likely. No Mans Sky came out many years ago, and is able to not only provide a lot of cool ground transport (that's fun to use), but the ability to call your ship to your current location. Bethesda seems to only offer two options: walk back to ship or fast travel to it. That's kinda crappy in my opinion. Other than that, I was very happy.

For a while, I've been wanting a sandbox style with a real lived in feel. Like the inhabitants feel real and react to you over time like they have memories and hear things about you. I've heard about the AI mod for NPCs in Skyrim. It would be great for these games to do that, and then the world/galaxy/etc would feel more alive. I like the approach they're taking with this, but having the added sim like Elite would, as well as some clever NPC work would be the holy grail for me.
Constantly speeding from a station in Elite? The controller remember you and give you a crappy docking assignment, or charge you more. Want missions and mysteries? Talk to the NPCs and they will respond appropriately. It's something these LLM "AI" are actually good at generating and "remembering".

An endless sandbox like NMS is relaxing and can be fun, but there are times you want narritive breadth more than small scattered lore snippits. I think Starfield will scratch alot of peoples itches. Hopefully they use some procedural generation on those "unessential" worlds that dont contain storyline elements.

Regarding the frame rate, it was a bit confusing but I think Todd Howard was saying that internally the game can actually run above 30 fps on console sometimes reaching 60 fps, but they’re choosing to lock it to 30 to save that head room to cover the possible intense situations which can arise in this kind of emergent gameplay. Starfield on pc will be a different beast and I’m sure will run above 60 if you have the hardware for it.

  • @mightygingercles6481

Unpopular opinion: I'll be happy with no seamless landing/takeoffs. This is going to play a lot more like an RPG than a space sim, and I want to be able to get into and out of various game loops quickly. If I only have 3 hours per day of play time, I don't want 1/3 of that (or more) taken up by having to fly through atmosphere and looking for a suitable, interesting place to land. There's a significant amount of downtime in space sims, which is fine for immersion, but Starfield isn't that kind of game. I worry for the typical internet backlash when people think they're getting A only to get B, even though it was clear they would only get B. Time will ultimately tell.
Either way, if the final game runs anything like the preview (I have my doubts), it should be an absolute blast to play and I cannot wait!

I liked the style of the Starfield showcase, they didn't seem to over-hype it.
The biggest take-away for me was that despite there being "flyable ships", the vast majority of the gameplay will take place on-foot, like Skyrim and Fallout. My read was that your ship(s) will largely function as a mobile base, as well as being the "fast-travel" mechanism, with the "fast travel" interspersed with RNG encounters usually involving a bit of NMS/Everspace ship pew-pew. I like the idea you can dock with other ships, whether it's for peaceful purposes or for breaching and boarding.
The vistas shown had some "stunners"; I quite like what I've seen of the character generation and traits.
    - I'm certainly looking forward to getting my hands on Starfield and attempting to play through the main storyline.
Starfield definitely looks like it will be "its own thing" amongst the current stable of space games. In terms of overall gameplay, I think its 'closest match' is going to be NMS.
    - It appears like it will offer things that might take _some_ disgruntled E:D and SC players away from those games, at least for a time, but ultimately I see E:D, SC (and Squadron 404, _if_ that shows up this decade), NMS and Starfield as distinctly and sufficiently different offerings.
    One critique:
    - Considering the generally high quality visual "finish" of everything shown so far, there was one jarring feature: The character faces: They're a bit "bug eyed" aren't they? The facial hair on the player / NPC avatar models looked so bad, it was comical; You can see why Chris Roberts and co. made a lot of noise about modelling hair and "Moist Eyeballs" for SC/Squadron 404 🤣

your point about landing the ship and then not being able to fly around the planet is well taken. it begs the question if they have ground vehicles. in the showcase, there is no sign of player usable ground vehicles or atmo vehicles (like a helicopter, etc). all the exploration/resource collection is done on foot - no mining vehicles or rovers. with the loose inventory system, it's probably not needed, but i would still like to have a hover bike or some kind of rover to traverse longer distances. i also don't see where any of your companions accompany the player - it seems like they are only on the ship(s) or in an outpost. so doesn't look like that cowboy character or the robot would be coming along to help fight.

Thinking on past releases, it's interesting how Zenimax had Skyrim, and I feel like with the attempts to be acquired by Microsoft, they were trying to bolster revenue (just like Reddit is trying to do with their IPO). We had the multiple versions and re-releases of Skyrim in the past ten years, we had the spinoffs with the mobile market on Bethesda properties (Fallout Shelter, ES Blades), and they then tried to monetize mods in Skyrim after the initial sales were done.
Follow this up with the Fallout 76 product which was their first attempt at a live-service game with significant recurring monetization (which seemed to work.)
Given the feeling I have with that history, Starfield is not only a fairly old idea for the studio, but I have the strong feeling that this is treated very much like Skyrim and other offline singleplayer games Bethesda is known for. I expect jankiness, especially given that they re-wrote some of the engine for this project, but none of the red flags I saw for Fallout are present here.
