1947 is a crazy year to be opening an art store in Singapore, that's just 2 years after Japanese occupation, people were still starving and looting, plus there were several currency changes and inflation.
I'll be honest, if I went into that shop, I might never come out. Seriously. lol! Nice work Teoh and thanks to the owners for letting you showcase them! Very nice! :)
haha same here . . whenever I go to my art store, I take forever looking at things and feeling the paper textures and my friend/bro has to literally drag me to get me out of the shop even tho it's not really a large store XD
What a feast for my eyes. I haven't been in an art shop for many years. My home town once had two wonderful art shops - one fine art and one more graphic art specialist, both are now gone since the local art academe moved to the city . In the U.K there has been a rapid decline in the last 20 years. Those that remain are located around areas with large art schools. We do have some wonderful online art shops offering a wide choice of products but its hard not being able to pick up and feel if a brush is right for you... I just miss things like that.
I can’t believe how much I am learning. You are such a great instructor. I’m a real newbie, (old-bie perhaps at 68 yrs. ) But I am so sparked to learn color theory, and more. Thank you. Thank you!
Theo, you're the best !!! I don´t have a store like this where I live, but I loved knowing about these art supplies. And I learned a lot about cold and hot press. Make more videos like this, please. thanks
The folks at Straits Art are among the friendliest people in Singapore. Several months ago, I forgot my notebook at the store containing all of the painted swatches for my watercolors. I returned to Singapore last month for an event and dropped by the store for watercolor ground. They recognized me, and asked if that was my notebook. They import the best painting materials in Southeast Asia. I only wish they also carried the 5ml tubes of Daniel Smith watercolors. For specific colors, the 15ml tubes can put a big dent in the wallet. For quality supplies and caring service, Straits is among the best hands down.
I’m from Singapore and I always go to art friend and they don’t have so many brands ! Thanks for sharing this awesome shop I’m going to visit that shop this weekend!!!
We have nothing like this near where I live - Just watching this is like all my Christmases rolled into one. I tell you, if I was there, I'd bring my sleeping bag.
When I visited Singapore last June I wanted to go to Popular and Art Friend shop in Bras Basah Complex so bad, and so I did. And then I watched this great art shop and realized that it's only across the street and I regret I didn't explore much around the street. Hopefully next time I visit Singapore again I will definitely checking this shop and get overjoy! Thank you!
That store looks like a really nice place to be! The owners are also very nice people. Tha ks for this video Teoh.. it's great that you're becoming more interactive and maintaining good connections with your audience. Btw I can't wait for the Rembrandt Watercolour review! *pleaseee*
Hi Teoh! I like this type of video every now and then, especially inside the store as it's a feast for the eyes and a change of pace from your studio/tutorial videos. It's nice to see what's out there. Thank you for all you do!
Wonderful video. I loved touring the store because I haven't been able to indulge myself during the pandemic. Years ago, when the Pearl Art Supply store shut down, I bought a bunch of Winsor Newton Series 7 kolinsky brushes on sale - maybe 75% off. They're still going strong. Best Deal Ever! I was going to stock up on huge gallery wrapped canvases, but was driving a VW Beetle convertible at the time. Wouldn't have been able to fit them in the car. So I made a much better purchase and the brushes fit it the flower holder that that Beetle had as a special feature :D
I wish I knew about this shop when I lived in Singapore between 2004 & 2007! But I agree with some others. I might never come out once I went in! Thank you for the tour!
i got myself my first schminke and other art supplies from this store. the workers are very nice and enthusiastically explain to me about the watercolors. wish i could come here again soon for another haul. Malaysia have limited store with this variety of art supply
I love the way everything is available to purchase individually. Here in the USA, you usually have to buy entire packages or sets of markers watercolors and paints.
I really like watching you videos. They're very informative and helpful for beginners like me. I'm currently at Singapore and finding good art stores and products. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you, Teoh, for this walkabout in the shop... It's great that you have such a well-stocked art supplies store in your city! I think Beginners should jump into artist grade watercolours. I teach watercolours, and i think student grade colours are good if you're using White Nights for their pigments, but a really good artist grade for cost and quality is Jackson's watercolours, and at the get-go the quality pops but in a traditional way. Their colours are made with pigments, gum Arabic and honey. Students and beginners can pick out warm and cool primaries and a few other essential colours like earth tones or neutrals and you can go really far with just 10 colours. It's more cost effective to know a brand that delivers. The ten colours I picked for my workshop, and recommend to people, are very well balanced and mixes out into 55 colours on a basic colour mixing chart so you don't really need more than just those ten to start with. You don't need a large set that might end up shooting you in the foot in terms of price and range of colours.
It's June 2020 and this is by far the most informative and helpful video on watercolor materials. Thank you for your dedication to educating beginner watercolorist and also for your honest product reviews! I thoroughly enjoy your videos!!!! Thank you, Teoh, I appreciate you. From your new fan from Boston-USA ^_^
I really like to see your progression from digital ( I know you still use it ) to traditional painting. Personally I think real paint is more rewarding. Great stuff.
wow.... im not a local there but when i was still working at singapore i was searching for the art supply shop and straight art was the number 1 on the list... the staff are really nice there...
Teoh I love your video series. It's so useful & helpful with excellent information. With you showing us around Strait's Art Supply it's just like being there. Thank you.
Fantastic and informative video! You should definitely do more of these types of videos if they're convenient for you, especially if you know of more art shops in Singapore! Ah, I really wish I had known about this store when I visited last summer...
Good information, very nice of the owners to let you make a video there. Most of what I buy is on line. If I went into such a store I would not want to leave. Guess I would have to leave the check book and credit card at home. The prices do add up quickly.
This video is educating and entertaining. I learn a lot of stuff from this ahaha. And I just really like to see people vlogging through an art supplies store because there aren't many stores in my country that provides art supplies as varied as this. Nice 👍
wow... them making actual swatches of the paints esp of DS is awesome and super useful. thanks for making this video, Teoh! [add: I wish I knew about this art store before I went to Singapore just last June 😭]
Yesss!! This was extremely helpful. I have never seen any other video like this and will definately check out straits shop if i happen to visit Singapore in future. Thanks for making this video😊😊😀
Yes great place! I found ceramic mixing palette there and Russian White Nights (or is it Knights? Hahaha.) and also big tube Schmincke. Awesome place that carry art supplies I thought Singapore don’t have; but it is all in this little shop.
Teoh this was an awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to make it! I feel like hopping on a plane now just to go check out that art store lol it looks like heaven on earth 🤗
Such high quality editing and overall composition in this video!! Thank you for putting in so much effort for us! 😭❤ I enjoy all of your videos so much!
I'm not sure if they're still made, but Windsor Newton Spectrum II are sable/synthetic mix and work well for watercolors, and have good water carrying capacity. They're a lower cost alternative to full sable. Squirrel are good as well, but Kolinsky sable are the best.
This is a very good video, packed full of very helpful information. Your style of doing videos is excellent, and you appear very approachable. Yes, more Q and A. (Awesome store.)
Really useful advice, thank you! I have been a subscriber for a long time and love your vids. I have a request, please don't put background music on. There is no need and it is distracting. It is only a minor point as the content is excellent

I live in Finland and heard watercolour paper are cheaper in Estonia, russian brands. Russians are talented in classical art so I guess good quality. Traveling to Russia is more expensive with the train and visa.
Does Straits Arts Supply store have an online shop? Been trying to get Saintograph black ink and can’t find it anywhere here in Pennsylvania. Thought maybe Straits would have it. You are so lucky to have such a wonderful art supply store to go to.
Thank you for a great video. Can you please share what kind of watercolor book you use for the urban paintings? Brand and size. I was looking for something similar in online shops - but didn't know what to look for...

+Ульяна Мельникова There are so many other colours to help save time. For example, if you use a lot of greens, it may save you time to mix the green. Another advantage is sometimes it is difficult to get the precise colours that you want, so it may be more convenient to get a colour closest to one you want.
Just discovered Straits Art a few months ago when I've been to Singapore over 10 times. I bought a couple of art supplies there last time (White Nights Watercolour Set, Oil/Acrylic Paintbrushes etc...) and I'd like to ask you for some suggestions to what watercolor-related art supplies that are affordable in this art supplies shop? +Awesome Amazingness The White Nights set is quite affordable. Or you just just get Daniel Smith tubes or their watercolour sticks. Just get a few primary colours will do. Prices are not too different from online. I usually buy there if I'm just buying a few items.

The first time I used a piece of Arches, I was IN FREAKING LOVE! Paper is actually MORE IMPORTANT than the paint.
I'll be honest, if I went into that shop, I might never come out. Seriously. lol! Nice work Teoh and thanks to the owners for letting you showcase them! Very nice! :)
+M.D. Campbell But this is not even the largest art shop here 😂
I have a Dick Blick here in Chicago and I sometimes spend hours in there because there is so much to look at.
Yeah I could spend a day in there looking around, feeling paper textures, looking at the markers and colored pencils.
haha same here . . whenever I go to my art store, I take forever looking at things and feeling the paper textures and my friend/bro has to literally drag me to get me out of the shop even tho it's not really a large store XD

Aww this video of yours is so helpful! I might visit that store to buy one or two things in future if i have a chance
