    With the purple the colour red you are using is a warm red with a yellow bias,pthalo blue has a yellow bias ,any time there i s yellow present one can not achieve a vibrant purple,this colour you achieved can be very useful when a duller hue is required,good demo it helps people realy get into pigment mixing,once learnt a valuable tool.

    I've been wanting to do a color chart for my watercolor paints but it seemed so overwhelming. After watching many videos on it, I found this one to be the best because you only use 3 colors to show us how from start to finish and by using only 3 colors, I found it easy to understand and follow. I'm really looking forward to doing my own, thank you!

      I agree -- where I live, Pebeo is the brand most easily available to me, but I wasn't happy with the colors I bought even though the packaging implies artist quality. Now I see why - your color charts make it very clear I prefer brands with much greater color saturation, like the Sennelier or Daniel Smith. Thank you for all this helpful information!

    WOW. It is awesome that you made so many charts.. I can see this can almost become an obsession! This is a great idea and so useful to compare across brands. My watercolors are all single tubes of different brands, so this opened a new world to me. Too bad I can't afford all these paints! Thank you so much for sharing your time and work!

    Very interesting exercise that's more intriguing than expected. Good to know that the thalo/pyrrol mix went more black than purple. Better to find it out on the color blocks than a painting. Delightful demonstration! I learned a lot.

    Pthalo blue and any cadmium type red won't make purple. ~though not a bad thing, you're going by the thought that Red Yellow and Blue are primary colours.
    Try the CMYk system colour chart. ~ in which you'd use yellow, magenta and cyan as the primary colours... and from that you will get Red, Green, and Blue as secondary. colours.
    Really good video as a colour study.

      To mix black, it is best to use primary colours that you are already using in your painting. If not, some quick convenient blacks can be produced with French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna, Phthalo Green BS and a cool red.

    This was a pain in the butt to do, almost 6hrs for a 24 colors palette (goauche, so i added white instead of diluting on other half).
    But i realized how much unnecessary greens I have (well that should be obvious since japanese palette tends to have a lot of greens)
    and was able see how a warm and cool red yields completely different results.
    Though, i felt that alot of my squares where not a 1:1 mix so my chart is not super accurate.
    I'll try the zorn palette next since it's super useful for portraiture. I dunno if it's applicable for watercolors though since white is important.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 лет назад +1

      24 colours is too much. With the right primary colours, maybe three sets of three, you can probably mix a lot of the secondary colours that you already have.

    This was very educational. I love how you have created different color for different brands, and compared them one to the other. Do you usually purchase your boxed sets and if so, do you have a favorite brand, and why? Thank you so much!!!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад

      +Jenny Moon I guess my favourite brands of box sets currently would be Winsor & Newton or Kremer Pigments (14 full pan) set 1. Nowadays I get tubes to squeeze into pans as I can buy the colours I want.

    Primary lemon yellow, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, primary red cadmium, alizarine crimson, primary phthalo Blue, prussian Blue, colbat blue, and SAP green 10 pigments. Advise please - thank you

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +2

      You can create colour charts if you have the paints already. But if you don't, I do not recommend Pebeo. The quality is not very good. It difficult to achieve good color intensity with their paints.

  • @lydiabosley9152
    @lydiabosley9152 3 года назад

    Hi Teoh - Thanks for all of your many useful demonstrations, you do a great service to all of us aspiring artists! I see that you do display the Cotman Winsor & Newton colors in a chart, but not the "artist grade" Winsor & Newton colors, which are the first ones I learned to use from my online tutor Louise De Masi. Did you omit the W & N colors because the Cotman versions are very similar? I think it would be cool to see the two (W/N, and W/N Cotman) compared - unless there is little difference? I will check through your other videos to see if I can find more on the W/N artist grade colors. Thanks again. Teoh!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  3 года назад

      With certain WN Cotman colours, you sometimes have to use more paint to achieve the same intensity/vibrancy.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +1

      +Fiona Plum WN artist grade should be similar to Daniel Smith. I've just reviewed the W&N box set that I've been using for a few years.

    • @lollyplum
      @lollyplum 8 лет назад

      Thanks Teoh, I have seen that review and you did the paints justice in that. I am already a Winsor and Newton fan so know them very well. Was just wondering how they compare to the other brands. For example in your swatches I can see that some paints are more vibrant while others are more subdued. Some are very smooth while others are more granulated. I definitely like the vibrant colours more. Do you think Winsor and Newton is one of the higher ones in that respect?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +4

      +Fiona Plum Well, it really depends on the particular colour as well. But generally speaking, at least from the box sets that I've used, I find Sennelier to be less granulating, Kremer Pigments to be very granulating, QoR to be more subdued (when the tube paints dry as pans), and Schmincke, W&N and DS to be rather close in quality.
      In other words, if someone were to paint colour charts and show it to me without telling me which charts are from which brands, I can probably pick out Kremer Pigments and QoR. But I would not be able to tell the difference between other brands. They are all pretty good (except QoR or at least for the particular batch that I'm using). Just use whatever that you have. W&N is good, very good. I like it a lot too.

    Thanks for taking the time and sharing this . .but what if I have 40 colors Palette . .How do I make a color chart for that ? but since it's 40 I might get a lot of duplicate colors so do I even need a color chart in the first place ?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 лет назад +5

      +Scarlet Black I don't think it's feasible to create a chart for 40 colours. Many colours and mixtures may look too similar. If you do create a colour chart, it will help you reduce the number of duplicated colours. Whereas a colour chart for 12 colours serves the purpose of letting you know the variety of mixtures possible.

    @Teoh Yi Chie , I have painted before but let the skill go for several years. Now that I have a stable job as an adult I want to paint again. What would you say is a good watercolor paper brand/series that isn't too expensive for "regular hobbyists" but aren't the cheap student kind that really behaves poorly and buckles really easily.

    In these 200+ wonderful comments/questions, I'm curious if anyone has asked about doing the chart as big as yours... Is it possible to buy that format of watercolor paper in single sheets.
    I also am a huge fan of yours. One of my most valuable subscriptions. 😊

    • @carolkd4018
      @carolkd4018 2 года назад

      I should have specified.. I hadn't realized the size of paper you have 10x7" is not huge as I thought. (I watched this video too long ago to remember🥴.) I have a set of 18 pans. My paper is 9x12" or 22.9x30.5 cm. I calculated and found that every square should be 1.13cm each. It's very tiny- so that's why I was curious about the paper size, due to the quantity of my set.
      Ugh, just had a brilliant 💡 idea-- I'll use 2 sheets of my paper and connect them with tape.
      Silly to have not brainstormed before I wrote here! You're a great artist and teacher.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  2 года назад

      9 x 12 inch paper is probably just big enough for 12 colours but the squares will be small like the ones you see. If you want larger squares, get 12 x 16-inch paper and cut it yourself. It's better than using tape to stick two pieces of paper together.

    Thanks for the demo of the blue, red and yellow primary color mixing. Please clarify: if the color mixing of red and yellow - which is Orange, has a value difference? If yes, what is the estimated mixing ratio or the vertical and horizontal. I am just wondering, how can I make a lot of color using the blue, red and yellow --- for example the brown , yellow ochre and sap green.

    Teoh, thanks for the information and all the great videos. I just purchased the full 105 line of Mijello Mission Gold watercolors. Would you recommend creating a chart using that many colors. I'm guessing I would need probably a full uncut sheet of watercolor paper, or do you think this process is more useful for limited "working" palettes? Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +10

      +James Darrell Wow. 105 colours?!? It will take a lot of time to create a chart, and you will need a huge piece of paper. And have to be very careful not to make mistakes! I don't think it is necessary to paint colour charts for so many colours. As long as you sort of know what colours to start with that's good enough.

    Q: I have the 12 color Cotman set and have bought some additional colors. I am about to make a color chart. Any tips how to add the ever growing amount of additional colors in a mixing chart? What do you do when you buy additional colors?
    I can't think of anything other than just adding them to the side and top of the chart. But that will make the neat chart look very messy.

    Im so confused. I have dyslexia and I have 36 White Nights that I got yesterday. I want to make a chart but my math is terrible and cant figure out how many squares I need for a 8x10 paper. I appreciate your videos, Ive learned a lot from you. Thank you

      I don't really recommend making a chart for 36 colours. It's too many colours. But if you're up for the challenge, you need a 37 x 37 squares. 8 by 10 inch paper is too small to fit that many squares.

    I have a 48 color kuretake set :'). Maybe 4 sheets of paper, and not have all the colors twice? Could use the white diagonal to put 2 colors in for above/below instead of the colors in the top row?
    And then maybe start with some interesting colors and fill in the rest when I use them?

    • @bunnysm
      @bunnysm Год назад

      Why would you try mixing everything? If you already have 48 colors in your pallette, there is no need to do the mixing chart. A mixing chart of 12 colors produces 12 * 12 / 2 = 72 colors, and the
      24 extra that are not in your pallette are probably the muddy ones, which you are never going to use anyway.

    I'm excited to do this. But how big of paper will my 24-color need?!?! Haha...

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +2

      +Dindin Lagdameo I used a 10 by 10 inch sheet for 12 pans so I guess you would need a much larger sheet of paper. Maybe close 20 x 20 inches. Make sure to write the names of the paints in first so that it will less likely to paint colours into the wrong box. Be careful not to make any mistakes.

    Really enjoyed how you explained this. I have so many sets that I'm not using wisely. I intend to make these charts right away. One question. What is the palette you are using to hold your paints? I like the system so much.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +2

      +Mary McCaslin I use a variety of palettes, metal and plastic. The usual one is the common 12-half pan box. This one farm3.staticflickr.com/2759/4386962997_15cbf9dd73_z.jpg

    It may be my monitor, but I couldn't really see a saturated lemon yellow except for the Schmincke. Good colour comparisons b/n the manufacturers. The Cotmans were a surprise but are they lightfast ?Thanks

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад

      Not sure how lightfast the Cotman are.

    • @pw6titanium
      @pw6titanium 8 лет назад

      Yeah, I think they would do well for journals. I will keep my Daniel Smiths for the studio. The good thing about modern high chromatic colours is that you can always dull them down but you can't brighten up low saturation colours except for simultaneous contrast tricks. Have you any experience with Old Holland w/c paints. ? I hear that they are supposed to be very strongly pigmented.

    Teoh, do I understand correctly?
    The mix above the white squares might have more of the colors listed horizontally?
    And the ones below the white squares might have more of the colors listed vertically? Or vice versa!
    And in order to have the white squares I need to have one more square than colors i have in grid?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, you need an extra square. For example, if you have 12 colours, then you need a 13 by 13 grid. You can write the colour names beside the square to guide you and make sure you don't put down the wrong colours.

    Great video.. ty for sharing. I was wondering what you do when there's moore paints from the manufacturer? I just picked up a 36-pallet from White Knights.. do you swatch out all 36 colours or however many you buy? and if so, do you put it over two sheets? thanks, I appreciate your feedback.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  4 года назад

      36 colours is too many. I'll just swatch individual colours but I won't swatch mixing charts.

    • @keves11

      @@teohyc Ty, so then perhaps I should pick out the single pigment colors only?

    • @teohyc

      +Nora Pavia Perpendicular or diagonal? The diagonal boxes are those not mixed because they are same colours.

    Hi, great comparison of the different colors. Why do you paint each mixed square twice though (blue-red, red-blue)?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +2

      +SerenityReceiver So that the chart looks nice and no space is wasted.

    • @SerenityReceiver
      @SerenityReceiver 8 лет назад +1

      +Teoh Yi Chie Fair enough. I thought there might be some color perception theory reason.
      One could arrange each color to be only on one side of the rectangle (5 left, other 5 top) and thus end up with no empty space. Thats how I did it until now, but I think I am going to try your way because I usually have to much color mixed already and this way I can add a shade for every square leaning towards one side of the mixing colors. Have a nice day :)

    • @pw6titanium

      +Teoh Yi Chie ....you could put more info into the charts by having the mixes biased to one colour and then the other so that the chart will not just be a repetition of the 2 halves.You could also use a dropper to make a smaller dilute section in the square which has happened anyway on some of your charts in the corners. Cheers.
