Love your videos. One thing I did is make square gradiated swatches of each of my paints. Then put each swatch in a plastic “business card holder sheet, the pages organized by colour type. Then I can take each one out as I like, and put them next to other colours or against the painting im working on to see how it goes. It works really well.
Can’t tell you how helpful your lesson on Mixing Chart was for me. I pulled out my old palette and cleaned it up, opening up old tubes and filling the cubes, and making a list of paints that I might be needing to replace. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy making the grid sheets but surprisingly once I found my rhythm they became enjoyable. Your tip on changing the water for each sample resonated with me and I dutifully commented to the process. Thank you for inspiring me to put forth the effort to create these wonderful and valuable painting tools.
Prayers for you on your path to recovery. Amazing that you are making videos and are not letting the challenges of your treatment lessen the joy you give to your viewers. I am new to watercolor and have been searching for a good method to swatch my watercolor paint. Yours is the best.
Standard letter size in America is 8.5" x 11", of that hasn't been answered yet. So glad I found this video. People mention these color charts frequently and I was very curious how (and why) to make one. Also, enjoying, very much, your instruction videos!
Really appreciate your lessons, just received my first full set of winsor and newton to get my watercolour journey started, bit scared on how best to get going, but ❤this is the best practical beginners swatch demo I’ve seen, really useful, thank you very much. ❤
I have lots of color charts; if I get painters block, I do color charts - very relaxing! My pigment swatches are painted on a single "trading card" sizes of good watercolor paper and stored in plastic trading card sleeves. I store the swatches by pigment and can easily move or reorder them. Good video.
I am going to start doing this too, because every time I start a chart it gets abandoned as I get more paints. Manufacturers have started sending me samples too! (lucky me). Am actually considering uploading all the colours to my website, as it would be a good resource for people.
I have made many color charts. None of them for hue and value (dark to light). I was surprised at the changes some of the pigments showed. Now I have to think about a dark to light chart!! Helpful video, thank you.
I’ve been watching videos all day obsessing about which style, layout, cards, charts and what to include…I’ve had the paper, rulers, knife, stencils on the table and overwhelming myself. Thank you so very much for giving me permission to just get the paints on paper so I can learn about them ❤ you suggested that I not worry about all the things like opacity and lightfast and pigment numbers. For now I’m going to make small charts that will go with each of the tin pallets then make the chart like you did that I can fit in page protection in a binder to see the values I can achieve. Thank you 😊
Yes - so excited to get on with my colour charts now - I'm just starting out and already finding the art of watercolour colour totally fascinating - who knew! I'm so happy to have found you on RUclips and already watched quite a few of your videos and taken your advice on materials, stretching etc so feel almost ready for your rose tutorial🌹but first I'll also check out your video for a secondary /colour mixing chart . All totally inspirational stuff and explained so well - so grateful Michele🙏🕊❤
I'm so happy I found your channel. You make me feel better about how obsessive I am about my new art habit. Thank you for putting out such quality content.
As a geeking mathematician who is a perfectionist your video is PERFECT for me. I always fuss about the best way of doing these kinds of things and you’ve solved my colour chart problem. A HUGE big thank you for that. Now to see your video on mixing. Just found your channel this morning and find your “geekiness” perfect for my way of learning. And yes, I DO need to know those pigments - that would be the chemist in me. 😁
Another RUclipsr I watch is always talking about pigment colors, and I don't know what I'm doing with pigment colors, but I figured as I got paints that actually show pigment numbers, I would use them on my charts. Lo and behold, I bought a set of 12 (Chinese) Winsor Newton professional watercolors. This was the first time I was ever using decent watercolors even though I got them cheap, and realized there were a couple of colors that I wanted to add, burnt sienna, dioxazine purple (which is my favorite and acrylics as well), Payne's gray, and cerulean blue. However, money being tight, I just got them in the Cotman line. As I was swatching them, I noticed that the same blue pigment made up both the cerulean blue and the Payne's grey. I wouldn't have noticed that before. I decided to buy the 36 colors set now and later as I have to replace them, I can spend more on the individual tubes. Of course it takes a long time to get the orders from China, I'm in the US, and I decided to start planning out my palette (magnetic eyeshadow palette, separate mixing palette), I chose to put the blacks and grey's across the top and my blue coming straight down so that I could have the cerulean blue and the Payne's grey together. I would have never thought to do that otherwise without having the pigment numbers. For the record, not everybody is artistic, I'd take that over math skills any day. Your nails are beautiful, and I do hope that was your last cancer treatment, and all is well now. {{{hugs}}} PS. Thank you for introducing me to Davy's grey as well.
If you want a space between your colors I have tried washi tape. Washi tape comes in every width size, colors and/or patterns. It is quick and easy and can look quite lovely. You can also remove the tape after you are finished if you like.
To confirm, “standard letter size” is the general term, though younger kids will call it by dimension, “EightAndAHalfByEleven” almost all one word. “Legal size” is 8.5 x 14 inches but almost never used anymore, even by lawyers. (Once court documents went to PDF electronic file format, legal size pretty much went dead because printers were happier with standard letter size.) Adding some old school detail since you seemed curious about those details. I hope you’re feeling healthier now, and thanks for all the great videos; I was taught pen-and-ink photorealism decades ago as a kid, and recently took up watercolor after my hands gave out and I couldn’t knit any longer. I need all the help I can get, and you’re exactly at my skill level. Have a nice weekend. 💖
You are such a good teacher! I have learned so much from your tutorials. You may not be good at math but your painting skills are awesome...which in, my opinion, is way more important, creative and fun. Thank you 🎨
I never knew the point of making our own colour charts with the paints one has. Your reasons for why and method make a lot of sense to me Thanks!!! Now i understand and also know how to make them! 💖😁
As a beginner painter, I've had trouble deciding which colors to choose for whatever I'm trying to paint. Your video on color charts is very helpful and I'm going to make one before I do any more guessing. You explain everything so it makes sense, Thank You! 😸
I really like the idea of of making a a same size list of of colors samples for the set. Good practice painting in square! I also tried painting square in a square going lighter.
I have made the small charts to fit in the 2 paint boxes I have & sealed them in plastic that I re-purposed 😁 And I've made a larger one that hangs on the wall for my W&N set of 24 half pans on which I glued the little labels next to each colour swatch so that I'll have all that information. I have a set of 12 Royal Talens tubes & a set of 6 tubes of Daler~Rowney paints also. Not enough to have to have a notebook for them. Yet 😆 When I can, I'd love to get some of your Jackman's; especially the shimmer ones. GOD bless you Michele❣ You've gotten me through another night! ~ Kathie in Lebanon, Tennessee
Because I always seem to be adding new paint colors and brands I had to switch to a different system for myself. I purchased the page protectors that you use for like baseball card collections. Each sheet will hold 9 cards. I cut my watercolor paper into the dimensions of baseball cards now when I need to swatch out colors. I include the name of the color at the very top of each card. A bit below the name of the color I write the brand. Below the brand name is where I start my paint color, starting with full strength color, and fading out as I get towards the bottom of the card. Since the paint color is so pale towards the bottom of the cards I can then write the pigment information on the left hand bottom side of the card, and the lightfastness rating on the right bottom side. This has worked out well for me because I can always insert new colors into my collection of swatches just by shifting the cards around a bit or if necessary inserting a whole new page protector into my system. Anyhow not sure if I explained that well so that you can picture it, but it has worked out okay for me. I appreciate how organized you are :)
Thank you so much for all the wonderful tuition. You save us from so much trial and error and the frustration that comes with doing things the wrong way. I intend to do some colour charts and will photocopy some spares for later.
Thank you, Michele. I found this so informative and useful. Who cares about Math when you can make Art, right? I was a completely atrocious at Math in school! Am recovering from a stroke, and I decided to do Graphite sketching and Watercolours as part of my therapy. So glad I found your channel!
Very helpful. Thank you for permission to accept the inevitable mistake and focus on the usefulness of the chart. I would like to add a note for each color, i.e. is it warm or cool. That would help with color mixing, right? You are knowledgeable, organized and care about giving students the most helpful information. I don't think anyone as talented as you can be boring! We just shine in different circles. Thank you for all that you give.
Hi Michelle, oh I only just watched this video so only just discovered you had cancer treatment 😢 I hoped you are doing well... You always look well and seem so full of energy 😁 Just thought I'd let you know you are a wonderful teacher and thanks for sharing all you know 🙏 appreciate and love watching your channel... oh and I'm pretty rubbish at maths too! Kindest regards and wishing you health, Mary from Australia
I greatly appreciate your sharing your insights on creating color charts and organizing them in a binder is such a brilliant idea especially putting them in the clear plastic sheets. Makes it easy to compare colors when they’re all together. So many useful ideas in this video! 👍👍👍
Thank you so much for this lesson Michele! I did make charts a while ago, but I’m going to redo and pop them into a folder as you suggest. The suggestion for labelling your palette is great. I wrote names on my palette but now can’t see them as they’ve been rubbed off.
I so enjoy your teaching style and examples. Here in the USA, our standard letter size paper is 8.5 by 11 inches and fits nicely into page protectors. The actual watercolor paper may be slightly different size.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very helpful and good timing. I have about 34 new water colors to swatch and set up in a palette. I started swatching, but each new paint tube oozes out so much paint that I stopped. Am not sure how to keep from wasting that treasured paint. Love the way you swatched your colors. Thinking my swatches will help me to decide how to lay out the color palette. That presents a whole other dilemma & set of decisions. Off to see if you have a palette lay out video that will help me with those decisions.
I think I do! It's often if the paints have travelled or sat for a long time, it's just pressure. As long as you have a deep well or pot to hand you can still use the paint. :-) I tend to group primaries, earths, secondaries together on the palette. If you need to choose a yellow for example it helps to see it with all your others.
Great hack: I used an icecube tray with 21 compartments, filled each about half full, and after washing the brush between colors, used a different compartment to water down each color. Avoids having to wash out a water cup each time or contaminating one color with another.
I haven’t done this although most artists recommends it. I always have the tendency to jump in to the real thing. It’s needed in order to understand your color, not to mention, every brand is different. You convinced me. My question is ... does it matter what type of paper you use-hot or cold press? It has a diff effect. How about XL canson paper which is cellulose! Thx.
I use cold press, it's much easier to handle. I only use hot press if I am doing some kind of mixed media, like watercolour with charcoal, and I need a smoother surface for the other media. I tried Canson recently but didn't get on with it.
Also bad at math, but in the USA it would be letter size page protectors. Letter size at 8 1/2 by 11" is close to A4 size, so a 1/8 piece of a 22 X 30" sheet of watercolor paper would fit in these as well. I sometimes use Arches 9 x 12 pads and cut the sheets down a bit to fit. Thanks for all your helpful videos!
LOL! I'm not so good at maths myself! And yes, it's because we use the other side of our brains, you know. But like you, I tend to want everything to be precise...with the measurements & lines, etc. It's rather funny how much many different measuring things I have; yardstick, rulers, levels, squares & such. I'm sure you do too 🤪 We need them! Right!?!
You can also use pkg tape which is thicker than our regular scotch tape..its comes in about 4 inchs wide sizes so it can be cut in half or whatever your size is in to put in your travel palette for the wc chart this can adhere to watercolor paper so if you put in travel palette it won't get all mucky..
What would the world be without perfectionists. :-) quite boring actualy. Thank you for this video. I was wondering how to go about this. I think it is easier for me to combine both your methods.. Made looong rectangles instead. Wasnt trusting myself with the water pigment ratio in smalller areas. The plastic sleaves are a great idea. Cant wait to see vidoes with colour mixing charts especialy greens. :-)
I have a binder filled with clear plastic ATC pocket protector pages. I then take cut watercolor paper that is the same size to insert into the pockets. Swatch my colors and all pertinent info onto the cards and group them by hue. This way I can rearrange them as colors are added or deleted from my palette.
Brilliant idea... I have thought about the problem of new colours so many times. I feel we need our own product, especially for artists. I have a design in my head... If I ever have the resources I will get it made!
PS when I click on links that come up during your videos it DOES turn off the current video and opens up the new one. How do I get it to just add the linked video to my playlist and continue watching the current one?? 🤔 AND love the Jackman's colours 👌 I'll be buying some soon 👍😁
Sorry about that, it probably depends what sort of device you are viewing on. I don't know a way of stopping it from happening, probably best to note the details they search afterwards. If you ever can't find a video just ask on my Facebooik Group and I (or someone else) will know where it is. New Jackman's floral set launching tomorrow with my Thursday video!
Great idea! As a beginner, I’m excited to give this a try. To answer your question, in the US we use inches to measure paper. So standard printer paper (“letter paper”) is 8.5” by 11.” Art paper usually comes in: 5.5”x 8.5”, 7”x 9”, 8”x 10”, 9”x12”, 11”x14”, 18”x24”, etc., as well as square sizes. I do prefer the A and B proportions aesthetically, though. Question 1: I’ve seen several St. Petersburg White Nights samples in your videos. I love the fine consistency and strong color, and am considering buying a set from Jacksons. What is your opinion of these paints? Question 2: I’ve looked for you paint sets and brush sets on Jacksons and can’t find them. I’m not a very good “finder” so I’m wondering if I can buy them there or need to go somewhere else. Thank you!! Edit #2: OK, JackMAN’s, not JackSON’s. I found your paint sets. 😂
Hi Connie, I don't label my palettes, because I have them in a certain order and I remember which they are, I also keep a list on my computer in the same order so I can figure it out if I forget. But a permanent marker and initials underneath will do the trick.
I found that i can make a chart in my Excel program to make the chart. I I then print the chart on Arches 90 lb paper (90lb paper goes easily through my printer.). I let the ink dry really dry before using the chart. Letter size in the U.S. is 8,5 x 11 inches.
Sometimes it is impossible to separate into 7 groups (or even 3 groups), eg, between red and orange.... between orange and yellow, between yellow and green etc.....
Yes, all on watercolor paper. It's always best to use the paper you paint on, but if that's too expensive then choose a cheaper paper with a similar amount of whiteness.
i just picked a random video that i already watched but in one of you vids you sugested to join a facebook group that is a lot of fun so thanks for the sugestion
I do them that way for certain mediums. At the end of the day, do what suits you best, they are your colour charts and you should find them useful, so make them how you like them to look!
I wonder (disclaimer, absolute watercolor noob), would it be an idea to put a black line, indian ink fi, in the square before painting it to assess opacity?
I love your videos, the only thing I don't like it's that you shoot them upside down. I get motion sickness very easily and for this reason I cannot watch your videos at full length I have to split them up into sections at a time.
Great video, I will give this a try. It was very useful to see them in different boxes I have done them like your other example with one box. I would like to know about the same pigment number on the two colors since I just came across the same issue with some Paul Rubens paint that I just bought, did you get an answer?
Sorry Carmen, it's a long while since I made this video I can't remember what I said. If I was wondering about the same pigment number appearing different across brands there are multiple reasons for this. Quality of pigment, type of binder, and colour does vary strongly even within single pigment numbers. Also because pigments are ground, and colour is light reflecting off of a surface, how fine or course the pigment is ground will affect the final colour seen.
This is a great video, and i will tackle this over the weekend. Do you have a link to the follow up video you mentioned? Thank you for making this, and I hope your are on the mend now
Sorry Claire it's an old video and I can't remember which other video I referenced, plus I am not allowed to place links in the youtube comments. Ask in the fb group, describe the video and I or one of the moderators will find it for you xx
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Oooh! It just made me think - I made my own stencil of a palm leaf - I bought thin plastic file folders at a dollar store and cut out shapes that I needed. Doing this for stencils would probably work, and you can make see-through ones and it would be washable!! I am so going to try that.
It's a British company, sort of an online art society. You buy membership, get a magazine and discounts of art materials, both their own and other peoples. I used to be a promoter for them but am not currently. Originally SAA stood for Society for All Artists. But then the government changed the rules and they no longer qualify to be called a society (as you have to be non-profit), but they kept the initials.
Jackman's art materials sound very like Jackson's art materials. Is this company trying to play off that? Jackson's is a well known and respected brand supplier if artists materials and they also have their own paint range.
I see on further investigation these are handmade colours. I think it's just unfortunate that they have similar company names. First time I heard it said in these videos I thought you said Jackson's!
No Andy, yes Jackson's are great. It's just coincidence, they are a small family, Marc Jackman makes the paints, it's just his name. Fortuitous of course if someone spells a search wrong!
Great video... Only advice is to set camera so it doesn't feel as if we're upside down over stuff... Makes the stomach uneasy while watching. Thanks. ;)
Let me know if you have made colour charts for your own paints yet, it's really worth doing!

Janie Rimer great idea! I think I will do this and on the back I will add whether they are Transparent, Staining, and Granulating..
I have made several color charts, I have no idea if I was doing it right. This video is great so I can get an idea how to do it correctly! Thanks
@@janierimer7371 Great idea! That way if/when you acquire new colours you can rearrange them to keep like colours together.
Stretch the paper for these first?

Thanks Annette!
Another great video teaching thank you so very much.
It truely is delightful listening to you and learning from you. Stay blessed. ❤️

You're very welcome!
Thank you so much for all the wonderful tuition. You save us from so much trial and error and the frustration that comes with doing things the wrong way. I intend to do some colour charts and will photocopy some spares for later.
Sorry, Just realised my photocopy idea was a really dumb one because it is not the correct paper.
Well photocopies can be okay for an approximation when you are perhaps painting outdoors :-)
I geek for paint! 😂

Not to worry, I got off lightly and kept exercising right through treatment, with a small break. :-) Thanks for your kind wishes Mary!
Excellent method and well explained. I like this and will makewmy own charts. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I greatly appreciate your sharing your insights on creating color charts and organizing them in a binder is such a brilliant idea especially putting them in the clear plastic sheets. Makes it easy to compare colors when they’re all together. So many useful ideas in this video! 👍👍👍
Thank you so much, glad it helped you!
Thank you so much for this lesson Michele! I did make charts a while ago, but I’m going to redo and pop them into a folder as you suggest. The suggestion for labelling your palette is great. I wrote names on my palette but now can’t see them as they’ve been rubbed off.
I have made charts, but am looking forward to learning more. This was great! thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much for this, you’ve done a great job of explaining! I’ve just got some new colours so I’ll be doing this. Thank you!
Ah good luck and you are very welcome :-)
So very heplful ! I did a chart but only painted one block colour~ so back to the drawing board 😊😍
Even a single colour is more helpful than looking at it in the tube or pan!
Another brilliant informative video Michele
Thanks Marc!
That's a great idea!
I love the slightly longer videos you make. 4 minutes is a little short for such information. Thanks for all your work.
Thanks, 20 minutes seems to be about best for me, longer than that and people wander off!
Thanks!
Good info! Thanks 😊
No problem!
On my to do list! 🥴 for the next rainy day! 😂
Never far from a rainy day here in England!
Also bad at math, but in the USA it would be letter size page protectors. Letter size at 8 1/2
by 11" is close to A4 size, so a 1/8 piece of a 22 X 30" sheet of watercolor paper would fit in these as well. I sometimes use Arches 9 x 12 pads and cut the sheets down a bit to fit. Thanks for all your helpful videos!
Oh thank you that's interesting to know, I didn't think there would be much difference between letter sizes!
Right!?!
So true!
Thank you so much
No problem
You can also use pkg tape which is thicker than our regular scotch tape..its comes in about 4 inchs wide sizes so it can be cut in half or whatever your size is in to put in your travel palette for the wc chart this can adhere to watercolor paper so if you put in travel palette it won't get all mucky..
Ah good tips!
I am always changing and improving my colour charts! Glad you found it helpful 🙂
Everyone does that with the names! And White Nights are great paints too :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks for that feedback! I will invest in White Nights then. 😊
As usual, very informative and easy to follow lesson. Thank you. What kind of paper are you using, cold/hot press, printer paper, etc.?
It may be listed in the video description, it's an older video, if not it's likely just a practice paper like bockingford cold press 140lb
Once you have squeezed out the paint from the tube into the pallet how do you label them so you know what you have? How you do label pans of paint?
At watching this again I see you recommended how to label pan paints. But I don’t know what they are to stay with.
I then print the chart on Arches 90 lb paper (90lb paper goes easily through my printer.). I let the ink dry really dry before using the chart. Letter size in the U.S. is 8,5 x 11 inches.
That's a great idea, my printer would never tolerate it 😅
Love this! Think it would be possible to do color chart on both sides of quality watercolor paper?
I think so! I would just use a strong colour on a scrap first to check it doesn't show :-)
In the US our letter size is 8 1/2" x 11".
Ooo thanks 😄 now I have to convert it to cm 😆 to see how it compares.
It’s important that the colours are tested, that’s why a mixing chart is useful. I always test my colours when I buy new paints or pencils.
Great tip!
recently i switched the paper i use from canson student grade to blick 100% cotton paper and the colors look quite diifferent should i redo my charts
It really depends Michael on if you feel it would be helpful :-)
Sometimes it is impossible to separate into 7 groups (or even 3 groups), eg, between red and orange.... between orange and yellow, between yellow and green etc.....
Are your colour charts all on Aquarell sheets? Thanks your video answered this question! So is cancelled. Thanks
Yes, all on watercolor paper. It's always best to use the paper you paint on, but if that's too expensive then choose a cheaper paper with a similar amount of whiteness.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber I think years ago on a short course I did our swatches we’re on a card type paper. Thanks for answering.
Here in Australia the size is A 4.
i just picked a random video that i already watched but in one of you vids you sugested to join a facebook group that is a lot of fun so thanks for the sugestion
No problem!
Somebody said it's easy to do these blocks from lightest to dark .....reverse of what you did . What's your opinion?
I do them that way for certain mediums. At the end of the day, do what suits you best, they are your colour charts and you should find them useful, so make them how you like them to look!
letter size in America is 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches
I wonder (disclaimer, absolute watercolor noob), would it be an idea to put a black line, indian ink fi, in the square before painting it to assess opacity?
Absolutely, yes, many people do this. Just don't paint the paint so dark you can't see the line, a mid tone will work best :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks!
I'm so sorry I made a color mixing chart before seeing this video. I may do it over
Colour charts are never complete I find. Always new colours and a better way to do it :-)
US letter size is 21.59 centimeters by 27.94 cm.
Thanks Holly 👏🙂
In the U.S., letter size paper is 8 1/2” by 11”
Thank you!
love gramerly
d. caeton
I love your videos, the only thing I don't like it's that you shoot them upside down. I get motion sickness very easily and for this reason I cannot watch your videos at full length I have to split them up into sections at a time.
Letter size in us is 8.5” x 11”
Letter size in US is 8.5 x 11. Legal size 8.5x15
P.S. will you let me know that you received a payment from me as I have never done this before. Thank you.
Thank you so much Karen, yes it worked and they will add it to my monthly ad revenue. I'm so glad I was able to help you 😊 x
8 1/2 inches × 11 inches is the U.S.A. standard Letter size!
Letter size in US is 8 1/2” x 11”
Why do some colours granulate and others don't?
Some pigments are naturally larger than others
This is a great video, and i will tackle this over the weekend. Do you have a link to the follow up video you mentioned? Thank you for making this, and I hope your are on the mend now
Sorry Claire it's an old video and I can't remember which other video I referenced, plus I am not allowed to place links in the youtube comments. Ask in the fb group, describe the video and I or one of the moderators will find it for you xx
Awesome. Why not make a template of the chart lines in google docs or excel and print it instead of drawing it each time?
It's a good idea. I sometimes use cardboard stencils too :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Oooh! It just made me think - I made my own stencil of a palm leaf - I bought thin plastic file folders at a dollar store and cut out shapes that I needed. Doing this for stencils would probably work, and you can make see-through ones and it would be washable!! I am so going to try that.
What is SAA?
It's a British company, sort of an online art society. You buy membership, get a magazine and discounts of art materials, both their own and other peoples. I used to be a promoter for them but am not currently. Originally SAA stood for Society for All Artists. But then the government changed the rules and they no longer qualify to be called a society (as you have to be non-profit), but they kept the initials.
commenting for the algorithm.
I took an 'O' level in maths and got a D. Retook it and got an E 😂 Know how you feel 😏
😂😂😂 who needs maths
Great video... Only advice is to set camera so it doesn't feel as if we're upside down over stuff... Makes the stomach uneasy while watching. Thanks. ;)
Ok thanks!
I ruined an entire chart because of the lack of separation between colors and everything ran and mixed🥵
And I’m worse at math and measuring than all of you😳😩🤣😘
