  • Dave talks about a few other imperative issues which will be taken to Washington, during Operation Black and Blue, October 3-8, 2017.
The ongoing PARKING issue and the ANTI-IDLING LAWS.... these are issues AFFECT YOU AS A TRUCKER.
It's NOW OR NEVER FOLKS..... support this movement to push for improvements for truckers. If you do nothing, expect nothing.
Support the movement however you're able.... go to Washington if you're able, or just a day or 2 off the road at home, in support of the movement, without moving freight.

Something that needs to be brought up. Ever see a CARB or trooper car, not running the full shift? Why can they have air or heat. But a Driver that's forced to spend 10 hours in a sleeper. Have to do it without heat or air? Every cop, from county, state or Fed's. There auto is running all the time. Make those people sit in a hot car, while the car is not moving.

That's a Dang good observation. I always thought that was a huge waste of taxpayer money, never thought about all the environmental destruction the excessive unnecessary idling was causing California.

Exactly! They act as if gasoline is a "renewable, green resource" idling patrol cars all day! Global warming too.

The trucking industry will only get worse as long as good drivers don't unite & say something, take a stand to say enough is enough.. every year it seems bus drivers go on strike somewher and after few days they come to some sort of an agreement.. the real drivers that make the heart of America beat dont do this so they'll just keep doing & taking more & more.. because as long as drivers wont take a stand & shine the publics light on the problems & says enuff is enuff!! Then they will only keep adding & taking more & more from the drivers cuz they know they can get away with it

I'm going to take off of work. I have been over the road for about 9 years now and about 13 years experience. I'm an OO now and have witnessed the decline in this industry. These training companies are ruining the whole industry. Please if you don't drive a truck let someone know who does drive so we can get these rediculous regulations removed

I have to agree with this. My example; this trip, this week. 78 hours to load 30 pallets in and around Salinas, ca. I logged 91 miles at .40 per mile. This is becoming a pattern. This truck runs furniture out of grand rapids, mi., to California, then produce back to Detroit, toledo, etc. And this is one truck that won't operate between the 3rd and 8th. I will loose my job and I'm prepared to accept that.

    • @SmartTrucking

Loading for Steelcase in Mi? dave

    • @joelewis593
      @joelewis593 6 лет назад +1

Not much of steelcase anymore. More of knoll and Haworth. Going out isn't the problem. Getting loaded out of California seems to be the issue. No matter anymore. I'm pretty sure my company is "parking" me enough to make me leave. Solo's won't make good paycheck's with obr's. And we all know this. They want team's to run. My truck is payed off, so they can afford to park it. So, starting yesterday, 10/02/17, I'm parked in Santa nella, ca., 2600 miles from home, again. Guess they're helping me participate in operation black and blue.

How about Canada, let's have paved parking lots, with electrical outlets for engine block heaters, also modern fuel pumps so you can fill both tanks at the same time. And a bypass for trucks around Ottawa so you don't have to drive through downtown. And in Quebec, how about road signs in Both English & French for American drivers.

    • @superturboawesome1
      @superturboawesome1 6 лет назад

Paul Wicklund Yup. Canada is pretty ghetto comparatively. Even the squeegees at the fuel pumps have handles that are too short, so many things aren't gesred towards truckers enough here

I work at a warehouse. We unload trucks all night. Sometimes it comes down to the union workers and there work ethics. They work really slow. A driver will come deliver a 5 pallet load but the receivers take there time just to receive the load. They spend to much time talking and do the minimal work required, believe me it very little. They will skip the live loads to receive easy drops loads which doesn't make any sense to me since they are drops and don't need to go nowhere. I see the frustration from the truck drivers. I talk to a bunch on truck driver here at work. Very interesting people to talk to. Hope you guys get what you guys are fighter for.

All OTR tractors should come stock with a real geni, the battery APUs I've dealt with where only good for about 6 hours, after that the electrical system shuts-down to insure a small charge on the battery to crank the engine. I can remember more than once waking up during my sleep-break freezing my nuts off with no power because my Bunk-Heater drained the batteries to shut-down. If its got a sleeper, it should have a geni to keep the driver safe and secure.

I say they need to pay for On-Duty hours at a mile per hour rate for company guys. 50 miles an hour x .40 cents a mile equals 20 dollars an hour. Eliminate lumper fees for drivers. About 2 years ago I started refusing to pay them.

I refuse to pay anything out of pocket with the exception of expenses my truck needs or maybe tolls. Past that i refuse to pay for company related costs. Lumper fees get handled by my company or the broker, otherwise my truck will sit right there unloaded while I collect detention.

apu's or power inverters should be required equipment on OTR trucks. in my short stay with werner i discovered that werner does not allow drivers to have a inverter over 150W. 150W isnt enough to run a toaster. drivers need to have the ability to cook their own food on the road. trucks should all come with adequate refrigerators at the company's expense.
you expect guys to live in these trucks, certain things are required to sustain themselves. drivers should not be expected to pay for these things.
futhermore, companies should pay for laundry services for the driver. a prepaid card should be issued with a certain number of free washer and dryer uses per week.
these are part of the things that multi-billion dollar outfits like werner should be paying for. the drivers are making these companies filthy stinking rich. how did a company like that grow to 7,500 trucks. the drivers made it possible, yet they are the first these companies forget about.
no one working in the office should make more then any driver, including inexperienced drivers. those office people go home at night.

    @KentuckyRanger 7 лет назад +6

Sweet bald headed Jesus! They're STILL messing around with this???
Before I was disabled, it had been years since driving out west.
Back in the 90s, so many states, including Washington, were horrible for finding a place to park!
I remember the first company I worked for PST, had sleeping rooms at most of their terminals, but they were kept at a minimal standard. Still, they had somewhere to get away from your truck for a while.
The BAD thing they did thought, was make it mandatory to park at their terminals when close, and turn your truck off.
They also made it mandatory to turn your truck off while parked ANYWHERE!
When I first started, they were just introducing the Rockwell trip computers into PST's fleet.
They kept track of many things, including idle time...
Well, I guess the statute of limitations has past, so I can tell what I did back then. It was in the late 80s, so I'm safe... LOL!
Some drivers would stuff steel wool inside the data plug, I was a little more "Pro Active"... The steel wool just blew the fuse, easily fixed with a new fuse. What I did, after having my job threatened several times over idling, was this.
Because it was, and still is, illegal to carry a gun in the truck of an OTR driver, I had an original hand held Taser. Not the gun, but the zapper.
Anyway, after doing the steel wool trick, and assuming it wasn't working, and having my butt handed to me over idling issues, I got mad, and took the taser, and zapped the Rockwell computer!
The first time I did it out of anger. After doing it I got scared to death that they'd fire me over it!
Then I got my story straight, just in case they asked me, and they did...
I told them that I had been driving in a bad thunder storm, and lightning hit close to the truck...
after that, they kept me home for three days, while they replaced the computer.
That made me even more angry!
So, I waited about 4 days, and zapped it again, while I was away from the SLC terminal, because that was the only place that could do the work.
I'll never forget when I stopped at the terminal in North Platte Nebraska. While fueling the truck, they would plug the computer to dump the data and print it out, later to be sent to the SLC terminal.
Anyway, they plugged it in, and 20 minutes later, the printer ran out of paper!
The terminal manager asked when the last time I'd done a data dump, and I told him 4 days ago.
He went in and looked at the paper, it was full of gibberish...
I had 2 weeks of freedom from the computer, until I had to park the truck at the SLC terminal while they replaced it, again, which was fine with me, because I needed a few days off anyway.
After another 4 days out, I zapped the third one.
This time, they sat me at home for 4 days, while the Freightliner shop, and a tech from Rockwell, picked over that truck with a fine tooth comb, and couldn't figure out what kept blowing up the computer...
They ended up coming to the determination that there was a phantom fault in the wiring, (Yes, that is a technical term) and decided to stop replacing them.
I spent the next year and a half loving life as an OTR trucker...
I really feel bad for today's truck driver. Why? Because in today's tech, it's too easy to keep track of, and control *EVERYTHING* a driver does! The modern tuck driver has had their ability to think for themselves slowly stripped away, to the point they've become noting more than a biological unit, who's sole purpose is to start, stop, and steer the truck per instructions from a computer.
The next step, and it's closer than we want to admit, is complete automation, eliminating a human driver altogether...
It's so sad, that in all the years of trucking, from the very beginning, We have been a silent part of a machine, best not seen, and talked down about, as if we are just animals, a disgusting creature, that is a necessary means to an end, for the transport of goods.
The ONLY time we're talked of, is when we make a mistake.
Then we're paraded in the media, as another "Truck Driver" who mindlessly kills anyone who gets in our way...
We did have a short stent in the positive limelight, as Knights Of The Road. But those days are gone.
And right now they're really clamping down on truckers as an evil menace of the open road.
Why? Because the intruduction of autonomus trucks will be a hard pill to swallow. Demonizing the thing it's replacing makes it, "The lesser of two evils..."

Dave, I'm with you in spirit from this side of the pond, but at the same time, I can't believe that you blokes are still running your engines all night long to keep warm.
I don't think there has been a truck with a sleeper cab produced in Europe in the past 20+ years that wasn't fitted with a Webasto or Eberspacher night heater as standard original equipment.
OK, many years ago, I have done it for part of the night, not all night because I couldn't stand the noise (or the bloke parked next door couldn't and banged on the cab!) but there was a more serious reason. Traditionally in Europe we don't have exhaust stacks, it comes out at ground level, a change of wind direction in the night means another driver dies. We lost many that way.
On the air conditioner side of the equation, yes, once the engine was off in summer, we fried. But, now retired, when I drive past my old fleet just down the road, I see that most of them have independant a/c units on the cab roof.
Anyway, mate, I wish you all all the best with Black and Blue in October and I'll raise a glass ;-))

Well said Dave. I actually make more money now than I did in the eighties and nineties, but have less left over because of those ever rising costs you talk about. In the earlier decades, I had a pretty healthy savings account. Now, it is next to impossible to put any money away.
Years ago, truckstop restaurants were usually quite full at meal times. Not the same anymore. It's just getting too damned expensive to eat in those places anymore, and more drivers are packing coolers to save some costs.

I'm a Trucker and I support the much needed changes.
No idling: no problem, but every new truck must come equipped from the factory with an alternative and the existing trucks the carrier is responsible for equipping them.
Parking; we need more parking period
Waiting time; shippers and receivers must pay the carrier after 2 hours but drivers should get pay every hour that they are waiting
    Electronic log; should be optional
HOS; wouldn't be nice if I could sleep for 5 hours and then go perhaps after traffic get better

Is it true the 2290 fee we pay every year is direct contribution to the railroad retirement fund? If it is, truck drivers need to receive a retirement plan through the fuel taxes we generate. The Teamsters Truck Drivers, their pensions, the very backbone of our industry, are under attack by the teamster/politicians corruption, we need to demand creating a retirement plan for us Dave. I have 30 years myself. Thank you for ALL you do keeping America 35+ years. You deserve at least $100 for every year of service, for a monthly check of $3500.

If the truck drivers got together and came to an agreement on. Filling filling water bottles with piss. Then locating the best locations in each state. Where they would leave their piss bottles. With in one to three days. There would be a mountian so high and costly to remove. On a daily bases that this would force them to come to an immediate. Solution, which is to reinstall the rest areas. Which even the public uses!

I am on salary so the .02 cpm bonus they pay for not idling wont affect me. The pay I am getting now is almost the same as what I made in the mid 90s when you factor in the inflation. In my trucking career I have heard about similar protests with nothing happening. These mega carries should be ashamed of themselves paying a new driver .32 cpm.

I've had this idea for awhile. Each state needs to buy like 20 or 40 acres (for example) just for truck parking in several of the most traveled areas of each state. Buy those land, build truck parking, then put restrooms and showers, and put BBQ pits across that property. So trucks can park safely, shower, and cook there and be social w the other drivers. Just my idea.

Dave, if the trucking industry takes one day off, we'd feeling the pinch, several days off, yeah we'd all probably would sweat a bit. But the trucking industry needs to make the points to the powers that be in D.C. and in the various states like Commiefornia to stop chocking the industry out! Now if the railroads stopped for just one day, America would darn near shut down due to the coal needed for power plants, and also for the goods being sent via rail Intermodal that the trucking industry delivers! Yes, CARB is a freaking JOKE and I have lived here practically all of my life. It is just another money grab by the powers that be up in Excremento who keep going behind the scenes to up taxes and fees on the mass populace here because of there ineptitude! 'Nuff said! Well, here it is the 4th and there are as many trucks rolling down the highway as there was last week this time. You have too many new drivers from the PC crowd and too many foreign nationals, who care nothing, nor understand nothing about what's being fought for. This proves what I've been saying, hell, not just me, but alot of drivers have said it, it's to damn late for a change. Nobody was willing to come together at a time when protest would have made a difference and not enough drivers are willing to come together now. It's a waste of effort. Smart Trucking must not be all that "smart" if he believes otherwise.

I'm just so friggin frustrated by the trucking industry now days and by drivers refusing to join together, I allowed that frustration to manifest into an attack on someone who is trying to effect change. That's the opposite of what I want to be about. No excuse, I'm sorry

Have responded to your videos.for a long time without feedback and would l like to hear from you on this subject: In this day and age of tracking devices and instant communications why are drivers not being paid by the hour? Why are we still after upwards of 100 years not allowed to be part of the fair labor act? I live in Oregon and have been driving over 30 years and really resent it when the carrier dodges overtime laws by sending you across the border once per week just so he can keep from paying overtime. If we sit at a shippers or receivers facility why are we not compensated? Because we're not part of fair labor. Why are we expected to work 12 to 14 hours per day? Because there is no incentive for the carriers to negotiate on our behalf to streamline the "transition. processes" (loading and unloading). there is no incentive for companies to keep the equipment of other companies moving. If everyone knew that a truck on their property was costing them money there becomes a financial incentive to keep the equipment moving. I therefore believe a truckers bill if rights doesn't go far enough without demand fair labor participation. We need to mandate that truckers become part of the federal fair labor so it can be federally mandated that we are paid for waiting.

    • @SmartTrucking

I couldn't agree more, but part of the problem lies in the fact that we have let them away with it for so long. That's why I've gotten behind Operation Black and Blue. This double standard of us and them is completely unjust. Be sure to take the week of Oct.3-8 off because god knows this has gone on long enough. Dave

Unfortunately there is not much Washington can do about parking. The interstates belong to the states and it's up to each individual state to build rest areas as they see fit. But that isn't what drivers want anyway. We want truck stops, right? Those are limited by property taxes and zoning laws that are governed by local jurisdictions. It's also worth noting that sometimes it is the incumbent truck stops in an area that lobby to prevent competitors from being able to build.
As for CARB, the state of California was given an exemption from most of the national EPA standards because they had an environmental protection agency before Washington created the EPA. Congress could terminate that privilege any time it wants, but the Democrats will never let that happen. They see California as a pioneer for policies they'd like to implement nationwide.

Question: If there isn't enough parking, is there enough land to build parking lots? Not garages, not hotels, nothing fancy. i work for a great company now, good pay, and they treat drivers well... its a construction company and i drive dump truck.
i agree with allot of what is being said, but im not going to park my dump truck and say f' you to a company that actually treats their drivers with dignity and respect.
the best way to protest is refuse to drive over the road, if they fail to fill seats they might change their tune.
oh, and one more thing JB hunt calls me once a month. i already told them im being treated very well by my current company, probably much better then they treat drivers. quit calling me.

I agree with the sentiment but talking about rising costs of living and then going on to say we should all just not work for 5 days is contradictory. 5 days for me is $1200, and I need my money.
We as an industry have had a heads up on the upcoming ELD mandate as well as all of the bullshit related to being a trucker, why did the OOIDA decide to protest 3 months before the mandate was to be enforced?
I highly doubt truckers will be living in poverty within the next 5 years, that's a bit exaggerated. Appeal to trucking companies to get some money behind this goal and maybe we can get somewhere, otherwise this is going to fall on deaf ears unless you have OJ's attorney at the forefront representing us all.

Enforcement is easy because the amount of smoke is very noticable and it is enforced.

Then you send HOFFA and the mobsters to D.C. and see what happens to idling and lane restrictions and hours of service. It may cost lives but in the end it will benefit all drivers.

I feel sorry for a lot of these OTR drivers. These mega carriers really do treat drivers like a bunch of whores. I’ve had a good experience with the company I’m at. They only run W900Ls with the big sleepers and they let us run our trucks all night for pre-DPF trucks and they have APUs on trucks with DPFs. If the APU fails then run the truck. They don’t care about the fuel. My company treats you like you’re human. I mostly run in Wyoming so parking is not really an issue here, but it makes me not want to go out of state. I know this video is about two years old, but the issues haven’t changed. In California you can idle a truck if it has an SCR system. If not you’re limited to five minutes of idling in CA. CARB will now be enforcing a rule, for trucks that are domiciled in California, that will block the DMV from allowing you to register your truck if it is older than 2011. They will register it if it is older than that, but retrofitted with a 2010 or newer engine, which includes SCR or otherwise falls under some other exemption. I doubt they’d make you retrofit your 1935 Autocar with a 2010 engine and a DPF and DEF system, but who knows with that state.
