Blackmagic making Resolve free was such a gift to filmmakers around the world. Their one-time fee for the studio version also is so competitive compared to Adobe and others in the industry who charge subscriptions.
I got a copy of DaVinci Resolve Studio given as a gift by my friend Nik a few years ago, and that was how I got introduced to this software. Yeah, you're so right, the decision to release a fully functional free version just works so great, it's aligned with spirit of time and where the industry is moving (towards open-source, free stuff or let's put it like this: towards democratization of production).
That's one of the big reasons I said goodbye to Premiere Pro. I was also tired of it crashing and just not being intuitive. It feels like Premiere was always working against me whereas Resolve is actively trying to work WITH me.
Indeed, that is crucial for our community to have the tools and resources accessible. This monetization model is quite an experiment for us (although we tried it before, just not on that scale). Thank you for your support, it means a lot to me!

I hope hobbyists realize how lucky they are, that people like you took the time to vulgarize one of the most complicated topic in VFX, especially through people like Troy. Color management is no joke, a lot of pros dont't get it and had to figure it out themselves over years of experience. Making this stuff available for free is a big privilege, I invite everyone to at least give a little thing for this knowledge. Kuddos 🙏
We've been working with Troy and other professionals to proof-read (proof-watch and proof-talk? :D) this series. Well, chances are that despite all our efforts we STILL got a few things wrong or at least ambiguous, but oh gawd we spent some time disambiguating the terms and so on to make it accessible. p.s. I still think it ended up being a bit like math or coding videos in the end.
For those struggling to think of a price to pay, start low and then as your skills improve and your income increases as a result of using this course, you can always go back and pay again and again.
We're blown away by the rays of encouragement we receive from the Blender community (and not only Blender btw? maybe there are folks coming from other backgrounds or even some filmmakers here?).
It's just one of the View Transforms, not great, not terrible. Nothing to write home about, comparing to AgX or Filmic (at least for the type of graphics we tend to do, that is).

Hi, first of all thank you for this freenium tuts, will donate whenever I can, question: do you have something a noob can start on resolve, downloaded it after seeing your tut, Thank you sir Gleb
We felt obliged to share what we've learned from the best: Juan Pablo Zambrano, Troy Sobotka, Joe Genco, Adriano Oliveira and many other luminaries of that hybrid space.
I wonder what will also happen of DJV. That tool used to be really powerful in previewing exr sequences real-time but since blender 3.3 the luts no longer work with it. I really hope it gets updated one day to work with blender 4.x
this will be great. Will mostly be using this course to denoise the exr sequences from blender. I might sound dumb but can we pair this with Blender octane edition instead of cycles?? thanks a ton!!
Any render engine will do! :D The temporal denoising requires the paid Studio version of Resolve though (mentioning it for posterity). It's a great feature though.
Sir, do you have the captions file for the video on Gumroad, or is there a way to download it? The terms used in the videos are difficult to understand, and I would like to use it with ChatGPT for simpler explanations..
Sure, it's possible to apply post-processing and color-grading right in Blender via compositor for instance. The Blender's colorist's toolset isn't, agruably, as extensive as Resolve's and you can't apply Optical Flow to smooth out the footage and regenerate the missing frames, or use Temporal Denoising (at least for now) without resorting to the paid third-party add-ons, but of course it's possible to do color grading in Blender.
Hey Gleb (: I just saw the first episode of your course and I am a bit confused rn... you are saying that however the Color Management is set, the OpenEXR Output will be the same, but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference. Now I wonder if I should use the raw or the filmic color management set in Blender to get the exact same result as you. Thank u!
Hi! :) I'm not sure what your process looks like, if you could share more details on it it would be much appreciated :) Basically when you save EXR in Blender, the color management section just gets ignored, this format doesn't save any of this data. So it doesn't matter whether the view transform was set to Filmic, AgX etc. "but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference" - if I get it correctly, when you drag the .EXR file into Resolve, there's a difference in how the EXR looks depending on what view transform was set in Blender?
Can a macOS user follow this course? Colors don’t look right in DaVinci; the colors and contrast change after rendering. You need to switch to the REC709-A option in Color Management.
That's not strictly required, yet ALWAYS appreciated, I won't deny. It took a looong time to put it together (and redo a few times under the supervision of those industry professionals who know their craft).
Yup. You don't need to export in ACEScg though or whatever, just export as a regular LinearRec709 EXR (the default EXR encoding in Blender), then in Resolve, use the ACES Transform node with the following settings: Input Transform: sRGB (Linear) - CSC; Output Transform:ACEScct - CSC

My mouth is shut. My goal is to take all the money you send our way, without breaking the silence! As they say, money loves silence :D
Thank you so much for this course!!
We're blown away by the rays of encouragement we receive from the Blender community (and not only Blender btw? maybe there are folks coming from other backgrounds or even some filmmakers here?).
Wonderful! What a about new color system called "Kronos" in blender to Davinci may I ask?
It's just one of the View Transforms, not great, not terrible. Nothing to write home about, comparing to AgX or Filmic (at least for the type of graphics we tend to do, that is).
Broke Boi from Nepal reporting in, Sir!!! Will tip after earning, Sir!
You're most welcome. Don't worry about anything :)
Just bought it! Thank you!!!
It means a lot to us! Helping the content makers to sustain their business, even though the product is available for free. That is some dedication!
I'll take it, this something missing for me with AgX and that's why I was stuck to ACES, because AgX was a pain for me, but it's better than ACES 1.3. I'll take it tonight !!! Thx for your work.
Thanks for the course!
That is our pleasure (through the pain of actually conceptualizing it and learning it first, and I think we're not NEARLY THERE after these years, honestly).
You are the man, thanks.
Hey gleb this really means a lot ❤️
Your cg shorts are impeccable, I forgot, do you use some sort of a Blender-to-Resolve workflow or do you compose it in AE?
Thanks a lot. I love your tutorials. and bought your course on Davinci. I hope it will cover your 3 cups of coffee. Cheers.
Thanks for resupplying us a bit with coffee!
Sorry for the inconvenience but could you pass me the specs of the equipment you work with? I need that speed and quality, mine is about to burn out.😅🎉
Sure! RTX 2080TI, 32gb ram, i9-9900k
you are amazing Gleb, Thanks for the video I love you!❤🎉
Thank you so much!! Looking forward to your gamedev projects btw :)
@@GlebAlexandrov thank you so much!❤
Hi, first of all thank you for this freenium tuts, will donate whenever I can, question: do you have something a noob can start on resolve, downloaded it after seeing your tut, Thank you sir Gleb
Amazing! Thank you so much! 🙌
We felt obliged to share what we've learned from the best: Juan Pablo Zambrano, Troy Sobotka, Joe Genco, Adriano Oliveira and many other luminaries of that hybrid space.
Uma pena não ter legenda em PT-BR, seria meu sonho assistir entendendo completamente tudo. Mas obrigada por disponibilizar gratuitamente!
Amazing, thank you!
That's very kind of you, thanks for this tap on the shoulder :)
Incredible !!!
Thanks!
I wonder what will also happen of DJV. That tool used to be really powerful in previewing exr sequences real-time but since blender 3.3 the luts no longer work with it. I really hope it gets updated one day to work with blender 4.x
Yeah it needs an update, I agree. It's useable, but it doesn't understand the recent OCIO configurations indeed.
i dont know anything about davinci ..can i buy this course?
Sure, you can either buy it (or rather, donate), or get it for free. Whatever options sounds better.
@@GlebAlexandrov i mena does it cover the basics of davinci resolve ?
@@CreativeHubFx In the context of this workflow, yes, to some extent at least.
amazing!!!
this will be great.
@@GlebAlexandrov Got to try how well the free version does. Thank you for your course. I'm yet to grab it.
Damn, unbelievable 😮❤
Haha, hopefully it's not unbearably techy and full of lingo, for your taste! You know, color management can be such a b***ch.
Does this require the full version of resolve ? Haven’t bit that bullet yet.
Not necessarily. 90% of it is applicable to the free version, so no, technically it doesn't require the Studio.
mind blowing!
hopefully not in a bad sense, as in, the brain exploded seeing a sheer impenetrability of the content :D
just kidding :) thank you!
Can I import and edit my rendered png image sequences in Resolve?
This is amazing 😮👏
Looking forward to your feedback 😀 It's such an X factor, how the perceived difficulty of this subject will present itself.
U needed this
Sir, do you have the captions file for the video on Gumroad, or is there a way to download it? The terms used in the videos are difficult to understand, and I would like to use it with ChatGPT for simpler explanations..
Sure thing! There's a zip archive called English Subtitles just below the videos, if you open the page with the product in the library on Gumroad.
@@GlebAlexandrov Thank you very much, I was digging through the inspector of the site for the file.
Can I do these in Premiere Pro as well?
Is there a way to do all of this process inside blender? Is it necessary to use resolve?
Sure, it's possible to apply post-processing and color-grading right in Blender via compositor for instance. The Blender's colorist's toolset isn't, agruably, as extensive as Resolve's and you can't apply Optical Flow to smooth out the footage and regenerate the missing frames, or use Temporal Denoising (at least for now) without resorting to the paid third-party add-ons, but of course it's possible to do color grading in Blender.
Hey Gleb (:
I just saw the first episode of your course and I am a bit confused rn... you are saying that however the Color Management is set, the OpenEXR Output will be the same, but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference.
"but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference" - if I get it correctly, when you drag the .EXR file into Resolve, there's a difference in how the EXR looks depending on what view transform was set in Blender?
u are the best !!!! thank for sharing
The credits go to those who shed light onto that workflow before us.
Hey, I wanted to know if we will be needing the studio version of the davinci resolve or will the free version be enough?
Can a macOS user follow this course? Colors don’t look right in DaVinci; the colors and contrast change after rendering. You need to switch to the REC709-A option in Color Management.
It even feels bad no to donate to this master piece😮
That's not strictly required, yet ALWAYS appreciated, I won't deny. It took a looong time to put it together (and redo a few times under the supervision of those industry professionals who know their craft).
Can i implement this with ACES workflow , exporting the exr in ACES from blender and using it in resolve
Great course btw !
Would this result in accurate colors or is it better to export in ACEScg
@@GlebAlexandrovi am currently using ACEScg and then i convert it back to Rec709 in resolve
this is too much to be free...... God bless you and certainly every should try atleast to give them a kiss
You're so kind!
LETS GOOOO
Let's go indeed! I'm super intrigued to see whether it has legs... or wings :D WILL IT FLY?!
Maaan can't thank you enough for this
Feeling sorry for 0$ cz I don't have the money .... forever in your debt 🤝🌼
No need to feel bad, it's a 0+ product and 0 is a perfectly viable option.
