The Battle of Zama was fought in 202 BC near Zama, now in Tunisia, and marked the end of the Second Punic War. A Roman army led by Publius Cornelius Scipio, with crucial support from Numidian leader Masinissa, defeated the Carthaginian army led by Hannibal. This is the final battle in the second Punic war series, hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks for the video. Almost ironic in a way how the same Numidian cavalry that Hannibal used so well for so long would play such a large role in his final battle and defeat as an enemy.

By some accounts, there was a lull after the cavalries first left the field, and Hannibal had his ranks spread out to try to envelop the Romans, but Scipio matched the new Carthaginian formation.

This battle is a victory for rome, but both countries have won tactically and historically.
Scipio Africanus, who learned the lessons of the past, Hannibal, who systematized "Hammer and Anvil Tactics,"
The soldiers of Rome and Carthage, who fought to protect their country, feel well deserved to be recorded in history!
I think this video need some background music. Opera or rock would be better than the shouts of soldiers!😆😆

I do oftentimes wonder about the supposed 4000 Macedonian phalangists that Philip V sent to Hannibal. I also wonder if Hannibal considered using them in his rear line, about facing for the impending cavalry return. Perhaps thinning their line to 4 men deep, thus widening their formation to cover most of Hannibal's veterans. Acting as the rear guard, protecting Hannibal's veteran 3rd line as they were engaged and apparently besting the combined lines of the Scipio's romans. Could have possibly worked, having cavalry unexpectedly charging into sarissas.
It doesn't sound that alien to me if Hannibal did consider that... He's come up with far more outrageous (and very successful) tactics.

Lol, the Scipio that Hanibal encountered in Italy was the old Scipio, the father. Scipio who defeated Hanibal was young Scipio, the son. So Hannibal had never got a chance to kill young Scipio.

Start watching for the possible graphic Visual artifact; dropped out after few minutes. The story as told here is lacking and omitting the real battle data, preceding, moves, forces and outcomes.
But also graphic effect is kind of weird, say naked war elephants (in reality each has a tower, which is the deadly hi-rise force), or warriors (at the beginning of clip) waving their shields, like made of paper or cardboard (which is not the case of a real heavy shied); and more. I dropped out.
The name by the way is Scipio (pronounced as Skipio), and not sipio or cipio. (and there are 2 narrators here, one is pronouncing correctly, the other one, not yet learned)

Good question. Those germanic tribes had huge numbers and already infiltrated in Roman army ranks. So contrary to what people believes, they knew very well romans tactics, strategies and had similar war equipment. Most of the romans army of 4/5 century were overwhelmed by the germans tribes.

For many reasons but not for military discipline... kind of. By the time the barbarian invasions you mentioned happened, Rome enjoyed almost 200 years of more of less peace at the peak of their power and extension. During that time, corruption spread between the Roman higher ups, causing in-fighting and various small scale civil wars.
When the barbarians "invaded", the Romans were too busy fighting each other to really pull up a real fight.
Add other various internal problems within the empire, like plagues, and it's a recepie for disaster.
There is also the fact that the barbarians really didn't invaded. They were fleeing from the Huns and most of them asked to enter Roman territory peacefully and Rome accepted and let them in. By the time they took over, for the most part, they were fully integrated inside Roman society and a lot of them joined the Roman army as mercenaries. When barbarian leaders saw the sorry state of the Roman higher ups, they just kinda took over the local regional governaments.

They had more cavalry, Hannibal had less cavalry, they were under the control of a better general, 1 third (though it might have been less depending on the number of Hannibal's veterans) of Hannibal's army was untrained and another third was trained but had been serving under a different commander than Hannibal until very recently, so Hannibal didn't have much time to train them to perform specific maneuvers and had to rely on what they had already been trained to do. The poor quality of Hannibal's troops makes it difficult for him to perform any complex maneuvers, to be honest it's pretty shocking he even managed to get his first to lines to reposition to become the wings of the army after they get routed (there's a break in the fighting after his first two lines are beaten). Hannibal does have elephants but they are likely poorly trained as if they weren't Carthage probably would have fielded them in other battles against Scipio. You can see Hannibal is cautious of elephants being routed and attacking his own lines because he only supports the elephants with the light infantry only who have a loose formation and won't be too affected by elephants running through their lines rather than both the light and heavy infantry as is typical. Hannibal likely outnumbered Scipio in terms of infantry but how large this numerical advantage was is unknown (there is varying estimates, some that give Hannibal quite a large numerical advantage and some that give him a moderate numerical advantage) and given the superior quality of Scipio's forces Scipio may have had the advantage in both infantry and cavalry. At one point Polybius and Livy tell us that Hannibal's first too lines starting fighting each other rather than the enemy, which is bad for Hannibal. This is more speculative but it's possible Hannibal isn't in the best state of mind as his brother Mago died only a year ago and he must realise it's unlikely he'll win this war even if he is victorious in this battle (he even tries to surrender before this battle but Scipio rejects his terms).
And lastly quite a few Historians actually think the battle of Zama was pretty close and that Scipio's victory depended on the time his cavalry returned.

    • @macobuzi
      @macobuzi 2 месяца назад

Elephants weren't invicible, though, they were actually double-edged swords. War elephants were big targets for pilum, pike and arrows, once they were heavily wounded or their rider was dead, they would lose control and potentially ram their own troops. Sometimes, even loud noise can cause poorly trained elephants to panic and wreak havoc in their own rank even before the battle begins. The Roman counter elephants effectively in the battle of Zama, that's why they won.
