The Battle of the Trebia (or Trebbia) was the first major battle of the Second Punic War, fought between the Carthaginian forces of Hannibal and a Roman army under Sempronius Longus on 22 or 23 December 218 BC. It took place on the flood plain of the west bank of the lower Trebia River, not far from the settlement of Placentia (modern Piacenza), and resulted in a heavy defeat for the Romans.

The year is 218 BC the place is tje River Trebia in Nothern Italy
On one side an Army of The Roman Republic
On the other side an Army of the African Empire of Carthage which dominates the western Medditerrainian
40 Years prior Rome clashed with Carthage in the First Punic War after 23 years of Fighting Carthage suffered a crushing defreat.
But then a 27 year old Carthiginian General rose to power and plotted his revenge against rome his name was Hannibal
Hannibal's first move against Rome was to sack the Roman held city of Saguntum not far from modern day Valencia.
Rome was enraged the Second Punic War had begun Hannibals first move was to take the war to the ennemy in Spring 218 BC his Army including 37 War Elephants set out on a epic march across the Alps to invade Italy. During the treacherous 500 mile march Hannibal lost Men,Supplies and Elephants.
By the time his Army entered Italy it had been reduced to just 26'000 men however in Hannibals first brief encounter with the Romans he used his agile Numidian Cavalry to ambush and outmenuver a small Roman force
Rome was alarmed by Hannibals bold invasion and sent two legions to deal with him once and for all the leader of this force was the Roman Consul
    Sempronius Longus
A Roman legion consisted of 5000 men including light and heavy infantry with cavalry in support a common Roman battle tactic was to march the almost unstoppable legions forward in an attempt to overthrow the enemy in brute force but Longus's army contained many new recruits inexperienced in battle
In the winter of 218 BC longus and his reinforcements joined 2 more leigions on a wide plain in Northern Italy the River Trebia that cut through the plain is freezing cold but fordable.
The Roman commander Longus is an aggressive and arrogant leader he values quick confrontations and he's desperate to fight knowing Victory at Trebia will bring him personel glory and wealth and Longus has good reason for optimisim he has 40'000 infantry 10'000 more than Hannibal.
But the Roman Cavalry is weak tired and reluctent to make detail scouting experditions persuming a ambush on the open plain is impossible.
Hannibal is camped just a few miles away across the River Trebia Hannibals Infantry the survivors from the long Alpine crossing are the best tougthest and most loyal of all his troops and his large elite cavalry is unparrelleled.
If the Roman Army is victorious Hannibal's dream of conqouring Italy could be gone forever but if he wins he will be able to strike at the Roman heartland and even Rome itself
    the stakes are high
    battle is imminent

This doesn't include the significant fact that Hannibal induced the Romans to cross the freezing cold Trebia River, which many of the troops having to wade through water chest deep. The Romans were thus fighting hypothermia, as well as the Carthaginians. Morale is more imporant than the actual fighting ability of the soldiers or their ability to sustain injurities. Infact the main reason these things are important at all is that they boost moral. Most battles are lost due to the army running away which happens after only fairly small percentage of the soldiers are actually killed. The vast majority of deaths happen after an army has started running away and not in the battle itself. If a battle is won few will die or be injured. In this case, the centre of Hannibal's army routed and many of them died but they were made up of gauls that Hannibal was able replace fairly easily after this battle. Soldiers on a full stomach will feel better and thus be less likely to run away. Ancient warfare is more psychological than physical.

@@MarkHoppusy It is not a real good simulation of the Triple Axes formation that the Republican army used. What the Romans did was to split the basic 8 rank battle line into three battle lines. The Hastati and Principes fought three ranks deep, The Triarii two ranks deep. In game terms, you would have 2 thirty man units and one twenty man unit facting off against one 80 man enemy formation. I admit that this is kind of picky, but this was my line of reasoning for making that statement. I think it does a much better job of modeling cohort battles.

No, Hannibal screwed up by not marching immediately on a defenceless Rome. He was also hampered by internal Carthaginian politics who did not want to see him succeed.

No, not marching on Rome was very likely the right call. After Cannae Rome still had 10000 soldiers manning the walls of Rome and within a week were able to raise 8000 more soldiers. They also had 11000 surviors of Cannae that likely would have made to Rome faster than Hannibal could because Hannibal would be traveling through enemy territory, so they probably would have been able to muster 29000 troops to defend Rome. These numbers aren't enough to beat Hannibal in battle but they are definitely enough to defend a fortified city from Hannibal's army. He can't starve the city out either as he would be in the middle of enemy territory with no way of supplying his army if they tried to blockade the gates of Rome. The only possible way Hannibal could have benefited from marching on Rome would have been if it had spooked Rome to make them surrender to Hannibal.
Hannibal's italian campaign was hardly a disaster, he managed to cause southern Italy to defect and Italy's second most prominent city. He also kept at least 100000 Roman troops occupied dealing with his much smaller army at all times. That's 100000 soldiers who aren't sent to other theatres of war. Had the other Carthaginian generals been competent they could have taken Sicilly, kept a foothold in Sicily and kicked the Romans out of Spain. Sadly for Hannibal the other Carthaginian generals are terrible so they lose basically every battle he isn't there for.

Sorry, I do not know what battle this is supposed to be but it certainly does not support Lake Trasimene. Longinus was a typical patrician idiot who thought he knew best. The Romans moved forward, in fog along a narrow front, deaf and blind without scouting ahead and were drawn into a trap by Barca's forces engaging and then withdrawing pulling in the romans until cutting off their retreat and then attacking the flank. The romans were trapped, essentially in line of column, hit hard with the lake on the right and no escape route.

This is the worst description of the battle I've read. You forgot the Romans standing for hours in the cold weather w/o breakfast. Then again forcing the Romans to wade across the freezing river. Hannibal had his men rested and fed a hot meal. There's lots more I;m leaving out. Man do your research much better.
