Few months ago I had strange problem with the rear derailleur cable, when I took out the rear wheel, the steel cable got lose, so I pulled back towards derailleur, but the end of the cable (inside mechanical Ultegra STI lever) got stuck with its metal end. There was no physical way to pull it out. I had to drill a bigger opening in the plastic body to remove it. Never seen anything like it in my life. For smoother shift I use DT Swiss light grease (for paws). Also using better quality German made cable gives excellent results.
I think that's what Happened to me when trying to put the new cable through the shifter. It got caught on the outside, and I had to take it all the way out and push it back in again. Strange problem! I'll have to try better housing for the front cable, see if that makes a difference.
