- A sarcastic deconstruction of "Rock Around the Clock" by Telex. I say pop a valium and leave the tempo knob where it is. Just kick back in your rec room with a nice glass of water and enjoy!
Artist: Telex
Title: Rock Around the Clock
Year: 1979
Label: Sire/Warner
Little known fact: Bill Haley was still alive when this came out and a copy of it was found in his possession when he died, with words "Really good!","Fun!" and "Thanks, guys" written on the sleeve.
It meant that Bill Haley was flattered! That is/was big! Being on Bill Haley’s radar or any celebrity’s radar is always good for any up and coming entertainer. I’m talking about the positive part!
Telex helped prove that Rock Around The Clock will never go out of fashion! They simply gave their own wonderful spin!!
Hahahaha I like this cover version it is so funny how they turned a 50s rock'n'roll jive classic into an ultra laid back synth pop groove with the lead vocalist sitting back totally chilled out drinking a glass of water n reading a newspaper, so funny hahaha love it!!! I've heard quite a few of their songs n they are a great group, my favourite is "Moskow Diskow".
Fantastic piss take!!!
I'd forgotten this exsisted. I'm 56 after all...😁
lol nice 👍 Amd yes
Moscow Disco rules
Totally blew my mind in 1979 , I was 20 years old. Always a massive fan of electronic music, still am @ 61 years old
Me too. But I'm a yoooful 58! 😉
I liked this song when it first came out, 1979. Still good to listen to. Steve.
I honestly thought I'd never see this again (I was beginning to think I'd imagined it!) - thanka for posting! Telex were excellent, way better than Yello, I don't understand why hardly anybody knows about 'em...
EXACTLY THAT! For years I thought I imagined this. I'm so glad to have found this.
Not better than Yello. On the same level, but Yello is far more goofy.
I grew up with this! Had it on vinyl! Absolutely loved it back in the 80's and still in 2021. Excellent!
I argue the best cover ever in music history.. timeless
I miss the 80s so much 😟
Best version EVER!!
Always loved this. I thought I was imagining it when I first saw it in 1979. A great memory.
TELEX - Rock Around the Clock and MiSex - Computer Games. From the late Fall of 1979. Unforgettable!...
This year, there seems to be a Reissue Edition of the Album "THIS IS TELEX" 😊😊👍!!
The first time I understood that this song had anything at all going for it was when I first heard Telex's version. Why wasn't this an absolutely gigantic hit, seared into our collective unconscious?
So this is what happened to Ringo Starr when he left the Beatles.
Beautifully done. Rock around the clock on a downtempo easy fun beat.
The contradiction is what these guy's are after, and that makes them hilarious.
Fantastic piss take
Been looking for this for years, thanks.
Excellent! I remember Terry Wogan played this on Radio 2.
At the end, there was a pause, then Terry said, "What the heck was that?"
Classic.
This edition of Top of the Pops is on Vimeo - presented by Jimmy Saville, no less. It was the 800th edition. Telex are nestled amongst ELO, Supertramp and Patrick Hernandez (followed by Cliff Richard and then The Police!). Ends with I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats. Truly bizarre programme.
What a mix! A successful, Birmingham 70s prog band-turned-to-pop, one French (of Spanish/Italian heritage) vacation disco guy, a new "white reggae"/pop band, a former punk band with their only real hit, an American, world famous band at the dusk of their era, a Belgian version of Devo on valium, a dinosaur and a pig...
I discovered this just because of a vinyl found at home...this song now toke control of my mind I can't get rid of it, i think I'm getting crazy
This is sublime for August 1979 - have a look at the charts from that time and see if there was anything like this in there (apart from Tubeway Army) - thank you Belgium. If you like this check out "Moskow Diskow" Bearhug. Tx
Marc, RIP !
Most comments here have a boringly predictable lack of sense of humour. Not everybody enjoy the wise humour of Buster Keaton either (world is a sad place sometimes). My opinion is that Telex is -after Kraftwerk, influenced by them but with their own personal style- the most intelligent band in Europe I know: elegant and comical at once; true pioneers in the use of electronics; being a deep comment of pop music itself, but without taking themselves too seriously.
Beauty+fun+elegance=Telex
Sigue Sigue Sputnik?
Kids these days......Lady Gaga and Justin Beaver.
Give me a break.....
France got "les Rockets" Germany "Kraftwerk" USA got " Devo " Japan got "Y M O" and Belgium got those genius from " TELEX " awesome !!! ^^
And UK had ultravox,Gary numan just to name a tiny few .
And all of them are musical geniuses. 👍
THE CYLONS FROM BATTLESTAR GALACTICA JUST ROCKED UP AND JOINED THE PARTY!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Bought this single when it came out in 1979, I think it got to around No. 40 in the charts. I liked this one and the original by Bill Haley.
that's amzaing...
they wanted it so boring,
because of that it's art xD
New Wave rules. He reads a newspaper during the instrumental break! A great piss take on the rock n roll industry/lifestyle that was born in the 70s and is still hanging with us.
This is so full of funny sarcasm that many (stupid) people won't even understand this cover and find it dull I am sure.
awesome !!
Timeless classic, there is nothing else like Telex covering the oldie.
And sitting down having a drink!
Great piss take 😉
Telex = GENIUS
Telex = SHITE . you = COMPLETE TWAT
July 1979. I was nine and laughing my head off!
Remember watching this classic preformance back in 1979.
love this version. Telex fan tooo
magic - i've been looking for this for AGES!!! Thanks x
Still have all the old Telex albums on vinyl from the late 70s and 80s :-D
They love their 70s and 80s in these cheesy bars in town on Friday and Saturday nights? Bang this on! A whole new level awaits.
classic version of Rock Around The Clock
Thx 4 the info!I'm gonna check it!
I really think Dan Lacksman is a largely overlooked pioneer. He was the first person in Belgium who had a Moog Modular. Before Telex he did some awesome recordings in the '70's.My favourites are Electronic System 'Disco Machine',and Transvolta (Great name). You can check some Electronic System on RUclips.
Pure analogic flashback, thank you.
Totally agree.I think their surreal and self-parodic sense of humor wasn't understood and they were perceived as a joke/novelty group. But they are well skilled musicians:both Dan Lacksman and Marc Moulin have very interesting recordings during the '70's.
Nice pure electronic rock'n'roll
Good bye, Marc. In name of all those that we love electronic music through people like you, thank you very much by everything.
Descansa en paz, amigo.
Wonderfully understated yet enormously effective rendition of this song !From Adrian Browne
Brilliant! Who said Belgians have no sense of humour?
i remember the honeymoon killers from belgium (oh i think it might be time to look them up also) - once saw them live and - yes, they had a good sense of humour, too...
or zap mama? same...
I don't know I think no one has ever said that...
no, I can"t laugh with it. And I don't like beer/bear eather.
Compared to Germans they're a
laugh a minute ! But then , who
isn't....?
Not heard this for donkey's years ! Nice one You Tube. Yeah, I remember this, it came out in the Summer of 1979 and reached #34 in the UK singles chart. A one-hit wonder from Belgium, following in the steps of their other one-hit wonder Plastic Bertrand ! Let's hear it for those Belgians. An electronic sound, but not quite in the same league as Kraftwerk. A quirky little number that I quite liked. As for the "vocalist" who finds time to drink water and read the newspaper does look a bit like Ringo Starr, while the keyboard player in the white jacket reminds me of that keyboard player in Sparks. I wonder what Bill Haley thought of this ? One more thing, how did Jimmy (now then guys and girls) Savile manage to get in at the end ? (3:30)
You have every right to your personal opinion. I totally disagree with 'not quite in the same league as Kraftwerk'. First a couple of facts for you: 1. Telex had a major no. 1 hit "Moscow Disco". 2. They were pioneers of the use of the sampler in their later work 'Birds & the Bees' etc. (Still sounds great today). They were in every way as high quality as but different to Kraftwerk as they had a different much more overt individual sense of humour. The style of their music had both Kraftwerk style rigidity but also more fluid jazzy lines - both these elements were masterful. Less popular I admit. But then not everyone gets their humour. Check out one of my favourites (no video unfortunately ruclips.net/video/WDvOXCdAVfg/видео.html
I'd forgotten it exsisted. But I am 56. 😉
Check out 'Space Invaders' by, ummmmmm 🤔
Aussie band, if you can call it a band.
Ultimate one hit wonder.
I preferred Galaga myself
super cool!
This version is so good!
This was the opening hit played on Retro Charts Radio this morning. RCR is playing EVERY UK Top 40 Hit (1952-1999) on elimination random from 8am to 11pm every day. Over 15,200 hits, one at a time. Give it a try, you'll probably never hear the same hit twice! It’s a music journey no-one has been on before :) #RippingUpTheRadioRuleBook
89 people wouldn't know irony if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.
wow this is awesome, spectacular and magnificant
This remnds me a lot of some of the Residents' deconstructons.
Played in New York on WPIX_FM "New Wave" format back in 1979
I could certainly enjoy a benzo and a glass of water with this
lisa praun mach doch
I' ve always liked these guys.
Had the 7" single and on the other side......... Moscow Diskow! What more can you ask for!
Great inventive band!
I always chuckle over this version. It sounds to me like it was performed by drunk robots...
Telex always had a weird sense of humour. I like it.
They don't really look like there into it very much ahaha I mean he's reading a newspaper ahahah
Too Funny
Flippin' great. Thanks for this!
Bought this single (Sire Records) when I was 14
Cool. I had this on vinyl when released. Moskow Diskow was the B-side, I think. Another cool choon.
Classic! Got this on a 7" vinyl in the loft and yes Moskow Discow is the "B" side.
I don't know about you guys, but this sound terrific to me...
I'm starting to dance right now....
Is that John Thompson from the Fast Show on the right?
Nice.
lol they're so weird i love it
I’ve always loved this song just can’t seem to down load it from my iTunes into my music list
wonderful
it's like music for the shopping mall in the remake of Bladerunner, that they haven't made yet... background music for indentured robots
This is great stuff - Johnny Haliday must have hated Telex !!
If you wait for the last 2 seconds, none other than Jimmy Saville appears ! That's the icing on the cake really !
Whoa, this is borning.
didn't know Eric Clapton was in a band like this together with Rudolph Muoshamma.
Great stuff!
xanax theme song
Thank you - I appreciate that!
Yay for Lorazapam!
Baromi jó :) Nagyon vicces fiúk :D
- :D A sarcastic deconstruction of "Rock Around the Clock" by Telex. I say pop a valium and leave the tempo knob where it is. Just kick back in your rec room with a nice glass of water and enjoy! LOL Thank you for sharing
hAHA.....I'M SO PROUD OF BEING BELGIAN !!!
Thank you Marc, I will don't forget you.
What makes this better is I'm fairly sure they played it for Eurovision
presumably the top of the pops studio in london
I recorded this on my reel-to-reel off the radio and played it rather a lot until my neighbour complained. Sad eh?
this is like hypnotizing
classic new wave ...
TELEX = TRULY AWESOME.
geniale cover!
Classic Telex!
Thanks. I bought a copy of "Rock Around the Clock"/"Moskow Diskow" on a 7" vinyl single. The record that I bought is a German pressing, so I wasn't sure.
STAY AWESOME! :)
The best version.
Thank you for your delightful comment :) Seems like today's music is being produced by copier machines...Song after song they all fail to produce quality music. I love telex and there is a huge electronic underground movement that follow pioneers such as telex
Killed the song...... You made the 50's cut itself......
50's are boring
Hahahahahah, you are my hero!
Epic.
Ingenius belgians👍😀
If Kraftwerk had a sense of humour ..? But, of course , they're German..
I have this on 7" vinyl single on the German Sonet label. The flipside is "Moskow Diskow."
STAY AWESOME! :)
