I’m not sure if the new boss from the DLC, the Moonshine Mob, completely proves or disproves your theory. Although it would explain where the alcohol goes…

Is Miss Chalice supposed to be the intended player character for the DLC? I mean, you technically have to rescue one of the brothers from Chef Saltbaker in the cutscenes, so according to canon, Miss Chalice is actually the one who fights them, not the brothers. So the Moonshiner theory could still be true..
Cuphead was my favorite game matpat.
I still like it and my feeling haven't changed. This just made it more interesting

Ah yes, perhaps MatPat should have mentioned that it was not necessarily moonshiners who were causing the 65,000 deaths but a Federal Law requiring that methanol, and not just ethanol, be added to alcoholic drinks to make the pain of drinking worse as to discourage drinking. This is where some portion of those deaths came from.

The US would never experience that kind of hyperinflation, even at the very height of the Great Depressionm but in Germany at that time, paper money was so worthless people would get paid with litteral wheel barrows of banknotes, which would barely cover a loaf of bread.

Look up Fleischer Studios, a big animation company during the time period that these games were inspired by. Watch some of their old cartoons. Occult references, demons, etc. were all very common. Especially as antagonistic elements/characters, things that would get the main characters into trouble.

It's like Booze Bootleggers from a faraway backwater town suddenly got into debt with the mob at a casino in the big city, and reluctantly, becomes collectors for the mob and agrees to take down the mob's debtors. That's an even more awesome narrative added to the already awesome aesthetic of Cuphead's 1930's feel!!
