What I love & hate about Dundee University | Uni traditions, student safety & bad landlords

  • Here's the deal. I'm a UoD graduate. This is what I think about being a student at the University of Dundee. Disclaimer- I've stuck around to do a PhD. Definitely biased.
    When I was first considering Dundee University as a place to study, there wasn't very much info out there about what it was really like as a student. There were a few scripted tours and official videos, but I wanted more insight.
    WHAT I LOVE-
    Everything is close by. Walking from the accommodation in the student halls (Belmont & Heathfield), to the students union, its minutes. All my classes on campus were within walking distance. And the Uni library was so close, I could easily nip home for lunch.
    The staff are amazing. Both for Undergrad (life sciences) and postgrad (again... life sciences, just the shinier building), the staff are incredibly supportive & always receptive to emails & poking my head around the door.
    The union. Five floors of madness. Two night clubs, one pub, one cocktail bar, one takeaway, one shop, one swimming pool. It was the main place for a night out in first year. Now I just pop in for a cuppa or a piece to eat now and then.
    Dundee is CHEAP. The rent, the nightlife, the lack of travel costs... It's the cheapest place to be a student in Scotland.
    The Nightbus. Jump on for free and head home safely. What's not to love!
    The traditions. I signed up to Gaudi, the uni family tradition. Most schools do it (science, engineering, dentistry, medicine). Something to check out for sure. There's also a caring tradition of 2nd year students visiting the halls accommodation they used to live in. Wee bit of a welcome for the newbys!
    DUNDEE UNI HAS A FREE SHOP. Yep. Everything's free.
    WHAT I HATE ABOUT DUNDEE UNI-
    Ninwells (the teaching hospital) is a maze. Security passes. Connecting buildings. No sign posts. ARGH!
    The library is too small. It's really hard to find a seat during exam season. (but the library is open 24/7). Desk hogging is also very annoying.
    The campus is very noisy. We're talking nightlife every. damn. night. The gym is also very loud. (watch out Belmont & Heathfield).
    There are some accommodation traps for students in Dundee. Watch out for too-good to be true tours that promise the world. There are some lousy landlords out there.
    Overall, Dundee Uni was incredible as an undergrad. Fun, supportive, affordable. My postgrad is in progress. But so far, so good!
    #UniversityofDundee

    Great video! Dundee is generally a very cheap place to live but avoid Belmont Flats. I had to pay £700 per month for a shared kitchen with bills included. I now pay £480 per month for the same but with a private landlord. The uni knows students who are moving far away will be more enticed to pay the full price, even though it isn't worth the £700. Uni accommodation is a rip off. Don't fall for it!

      Was in Dundee Uni mid eighties and was a good time, pre-www & pre-cell phones😊
      I had a full grant so accommodation was paid in full and House of Residence was an old street leading up to the Union,,,,,looks like it doesn't nowadays run as accommodation.

    I’m so glad I found your videos. Many of the buildings I recognise from my years at Queens College Dundee in the mid 50's but it is a highly respected University in it own right these days. I would love to have had the facilities you have today. I knew the city well because I also went to school in Dundee. I love the city, but there was less in the way of guidance for the new student (bejant) at QCD. I do enjoy following your videos which bring back many happy memories. Thank you.

There is quite a bio-science cluster around Dundee and I know start-ups supported by UoD and ScotGov. Also people in my year changed tack a wee bit from what you might typically think, going into insurance, policy, finance. Best of luck!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 года назад +2

      Westpark is about 30 minutes walk from main campus. Most of the shops, pubs and all of the nightlife are towards campus or further east. I think Belmont & Heathfield are right in the centre of uni social life (being so close to the union & gym). There are very regular buses from main campus to Ninewells. Also the walk from Westpark to Ninewells is uphill. If you're super social, I'd say Belmont or Heathfield. Westpark was still social, but just that wee bit out of the center of things.

    • @EmmaSandy

      Hi Youness! There are lots of student jobs in Dundee. The most common job is working at the student union (DUSA). DUSA is 5 floors & has cafes, nightlife & a shop, employing lots of students. (Thinking about this more, the hours can be a little nocturnal, so for a post grad job you may prefer something calmer). There are lots of other cafes and shops nearby who employ students (on Perth Road, in the Overgate Shopping center or the city center). I'll list some specific places I know students work in if you want places to search up: Debenhams department store, Greggs bakery, Tesco supermarket, Mecca Bingo, Dukes Corner Pub, Lidl Supermarket. Part time work can come as either a set contract (I've had for example a 16 hour/week contract) or a Zero-hours contract (more flexible, but the employers don't guarantee you work, so it can be less reliable). The minimum wage is around £8.70/hour (age depending). It's illegal to pay less than than this (you can check the exact rates on gov.uk website). Hope you find something!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 года назад +1

      When I signed up for halls I remember answering a few questions about noise levels etc so they can match you with the best possible flatmates. Belmont and Heathfield will probably be the noisiest (as they both have courtyards to echo gym noise & nightlife). I think the top of Belmont tower might be quieter, but I'm not too sure. Those three are very central. Seabraes is a 5 min walk (with a hill) away. The newer build seabraes flats I remember had nurses/postgrads and I think that would be quieter. Westpark villas I would expect to be quieter too, and it's a 30 min walk from town/campus so less nightlife. Another option could be to find a flat of older students who may be quieter (south or west of campus as the city center area to the east is noisy too). Hope you find somewhere lovely!

Most people who are at Abertay stay very near in student accommodation. I knew a few folk at the Qi student accommodation. Dundee is a very studenty city (in the uni areas at least). • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  2 года назад +2

      Hello, it's around £300-600/ month for renting a room. The university halls are most expensive. A private let is less expensive. Additional costs include internet ~£20/month, energy bill ~£60 (divide this by number of flatmates). Also my food costs estimating ~£160/month. All numbers are a rough estimate for me, you could spend more or less.
      Also be warned about the price of heating with electric radiators and electric showers, it can be high. Gas heating is cheapest and most comfortable. Tall ceilings do look nice, but it'll be cold in winter. Best wishes finding a place!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 года назад +2

      I'm very bias as I've had a great experience with Dundee Uni, so I can give you thumbs up that Dundee would be a great choice! I did go to Stirling Uni campus twice to look around on the open days. The campus is BEAUTIFUL. It's so green with a calm loch at the heart. I'll say it's probably the most picturesque uni I've seen. And the town of Stirling is also lovely. Stirling does rate higher on the uni league tables for accounting and finance than Dundee. But Dundee rates higher for student satisfaction. I can also confirm, Dundee is a wonderful place to be a happy student. I'll also say Dundee is probably one of the most affordable places for rent and food. I think the nightlife is better in Dundee, it's a bigger city and it's better connected. But I think you should go with your gut. I remember one reason I chose Dundee Uni was because I felt really happy walking around campus on the open day. One of the students hosting the open day just had the biggest welcoming smile. I felt relaxed and I was excited about the Dundee uni. Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you. And, they're both great options! Best of luck.

    I am from Kenya and I have applied to Dundee for Master's in Medical Art. Haven't gotten an offer yet but still waiting. How is the weather there and are there specific accommodation reserved for postgraduate students?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 года назад +1

      Hello Geoffrey. Good luck with your application. I've seen wonderful art from students on the Medical Art course. It has a great reputation. The weather is cold (5-10'C this month), but Dundee is one of the driest places in Scotland. You'll want to wear a good jacket outside from September to May most likely. But with enough layers of clothing, the weather is no problem :) One big difference between Kenya and Scotland will be the number of daylight hours in winter. You can get sunrise alarms which are great, and take vitamin D to make winter easier! Yes there are specific university accommodation in Heathfield (in the centre of campus, very near shops and amenities), and in Westpark (a 30 min walk west of campus). I show both of these in my "unofficial campus tour" video if you're interested to see them.

      Yes of course! You'll probably want to look at private rents within walking distance to the main campus. I've paid £590/month for a 2 bedroom flat (2 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom) and that was a good price, nice location. A 1 bedroom flat probably £450/month. If you want to share with more flatmates, there are some nice 4 bedroom houses nearby (Brook gardens/nearby) that would be about £370 per person/month. Good places to start looking would be zoopla.co.uk, citylets.co.uk. There are often single-rooms advertised on facebook groups if there is 1 room to fill in a house. Best of luck with your masters!

      Dundee has a great business school. I'm not familiar with the courses at Surrey or Swansea. Do you know what's important to you- university rankings, lifestyle, course content? Student life in Dundee is pretty good. The living is affordable, comfortable and friendly. It's a small city, everything is walkable and everyone is nearby.

    Whats the nightlife like in Dundee. Would I be disappointed coming from London?? X

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 года назад +1

      Probably.... haha. Especially right now. All night clubs are closed & honestly I have no idea what's happening this year due to coronavirus.
      There are three main clubs within walking distance to the uni:
      -The Union, it's 5 floors, 1 classic club, 1 sofa-type bar, one cocktail bar, one alternative club (pop nights, rock nights, specific bands etc).
      -Underground. Fine, but it is truly underground and you cant dance for beams being in the way.
      -Carbon. Pretty big, your classic circle dance floor club with VIP bits upstairs. Pretty standard. Sticky carpets. You know the type.
      The pubs are pretty good tho. Lots and lots of pubs with live music. Some speak easy types in town. Some amazing cocktail bars. Loads of beer events, lots of local brewerys.
      Hope this helps!x

    Is St. Michaels Reform school still open?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 года назад

      Hi Alfred, I had a wee look into St Michaels and it looks like the school building was taken over by the college and then demolished in 2012 for new housing (called St Michael's Grove). On my searching I did find a Facebook group you may enjoy called "St Michael's School Dundee Reunited". They shared this video recently. There is a school reunion happening next year!

      @@EmmaSandy Thank you Emma, I went to that school in 68/69. It was a tuff place. I can remember a teacher throwing a chisel at me in the woodwork class like it was a dart. I also remember a science teacher pushing my head into the gas taps in a science lab. I am glad they knocked it down I have no fond memories of the place.
      I am an old man now, I still continue to upgrade my education, and would advise all young people in Dundee to do the same., and then move far away from that place.
      All the best to you.

      It's 25 minutes in the car, or 30 minutes in the bus. The road is a winding country road past villages and farming fields. There is car parking at both Dundee and St Andrews. Commuting between the two is also common.
