So beautiful, it's amazing how graceful and effortlessly the 3985 moves, as if she's gliding. It's hard to believe that the 3985 is well over 1,000,000 lbs
I LOVE this old steam engine! And to see her still alive, well, and operating today makes me want to cry. I'd love to afford a ticket for an excursion pulled by this locomotive. The ride would just about have me in tears the entire way.
I saw one in motion once. It was a freight train. I'm thinking I was about 10. We were on the highway parallel to the tracks and I'd been counting the cars as we overtook the train slowly. Then I saw the locomotive in the distance and was mesmerized. He must have just left a yard and was getting up speed, for the drivers were spinning on the tracks and sparks were flying. It seemed that the smoke shot 50' into the sky before it even thought about dissipating. The engineer saw that I was mesmerized. He waved to me. It will always be the grandest machine that ever was.
I sure hope that someday UP3985 and N&W 1218 both get to run again. The steamers that could do double duty pulling heavy freight or fast passenger service always have been special to me.
Que hermoso diseño de la locomotora,se parece mucho a las que se utilizaron en la Revolucion de mi pais, hermosas maquinas.Saludos cordiales desde Mexico.
Couldn't keep watching as this was giving me a steamgasim. Hope to live long enough to see the triple beauty’s all in operation, without a diesel locomotive anywhere in sight. Best would be with them all burning coal, but the steam is most important.
Why don't they run 3985 anymore? I've never seen a steam locomotive in motion/running condition, only static display. Seeing 844 or any other steamer at that is on my bucket list.
Because Ed Dickens is hell bent on restoring 4014 (I personally think he wants to "out-do" Steve Lee and his way is by restoring something even bigger. Then comes 844. So 3985 is last. She may sadly be unnecessary after 4014, too close in size for both to be needed.

+Jacob Woods they won't go be up on her
I've heard that she had an oil injector malfunction on this trip. It would certainly explain the volume of smoke plus how low it's hanging.
ZeldaTheSwordsman Heard that too. Also heard it was about 0 out too, letting the steam show up more in the exhaust.
How fast was she going it seemed quite fast
Wow no dislikes
someone please buy Skip a tripod
