It's awesome to have the old girl give a flawless performance after her rebuild. Also I love how the fire fighters at Lasalle are busy taking pictures, lol!
It is always a great joy to see footage of Union Pacific 844 in action, this engine is one of UP's prize possession examples of steam locomotives and is the only operating member of the UP's four surviving FEF class 4-8-4 type engines.
I have good memories of UP steam excursions coming through Greeley in the first half of the 1970s. Thanks for showing this video that the engine is still at work more than 40 years later. Born in the late 40s, I am a time traveler from the age of steam.
Enjoyed this immensely. Maybe a shot of the full train passing at one point would add to this video. Where all the whistle sounds coming from that engine we saw steaming away? Thanks ever so much sharing it with the world!
History on the Rails. Congrats to Ed Dickens, Manager of the UP Steam Shop & Crew. Now onto the UP Big Boy. 4000 Class. 'Cool' • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
A very impressive video on two counts. 844 looks amazing. Did it look and run as well as this 72 years ago? Top Marks to UP Steam Shop. And this is one of the best quality video clips I have seen - the camera must be a real state of the art model - just 'pause' the clip and the still is superb.
Why is it on Northerns and Mountains that the connecting rod is attached to the second axle, whereas most locomotives with eight drive wheels have it on the third?
Most of them have large diameter drivers and extending the main rod to the 3rd driver would increase reciprocating mass. That would require heavier counter-weights on the drivers and would probably decrease maximum speed.
Skip, my friend, you've done it again...... By far some of the best footage of all the UP Steam and Heritage operations....... Have to give it to the Steam crew for making 844 look her best after 3 long painful years of restoration and rebuilding, but I have to give it to you for the awesome highball running shots. Not sure what cameras you use, but damn if they don't make 844 look great
I am proud that 844 is finally fired up ane is under steam again. That trip of the Cheyenne Frontier Days trip was a success. Do you think Big Boy 4014 will pull the Cheyenne Frontier Days special when its restoration is complete.
Great to see the 844 performing its magic again and of course your video capture is excellent. I am looking forward to seeing her with the Rocky Mountains and hopefully the Cascade Ranges in the background. Will there be some kind of schedule available that you will follow in order to capture more footage of this lovely engine in America? Cheers from Australia.
I wonder if the worked on the oil injection system in prep for doing the conversion on the big boy. 844 seems to be maintaining a really clean stack compared to the past.
+Terminator X lol, apparently when it was converted, the fire couldn't be stoked evenly to build up adequate steam pressure and was converted back to coal. but the big boy they are restoring now has way more technology than available when it was retired in '62
Could you tell me what the 2 cars right behind 844, what do they carry for it, and that flag that is attached to the front of it, have see that before but just cant remember which one it is, can you tell me please?
they are water tenders. the black one is split so the front half hods fuel oil and water the yellow one just water and it used just 18,000 gallons for the run into Denver on the 21st
July 24,2016 it went from Denver, back home to Cheyenne. Till next year probably as they have 3 years to do the same type of rebuild to the 4014 Big Boy
This is Awesome it's the Second or Third time of UP #1989 with UP #844! and my Second time Seeing UP #1989 and my 5th time seeing UP #844. And I Feel Like This Train is or maybe going to be in A Movie?
Cool vid! Someday can someday can you guys run 844 down south on an excursion on the Mykawa sub and pass Alvin as soon as you can?and keep up the good vids!
what is the fastest they run the engine these days, and in the past before the new rules that come into play in the 1990's, and does a hard run make her hotter or is that just coal fired engines like 1225 and 765, I know it was said when you ran them fast they get more effecent and the cutoff can be used to make it perform and really use that steam they run off the expanding nature.
Can anyone explain to me what those big blinders on the front of the engine are for? Are they to prevent the wind from buffetting the engineer, or is it something to do with how they want the headlight to not leak light off to the sides?
Smoke Deflectors, or elephant ears. The 800's were prone to having the smoke floating down towards the cab, so The UP put them on. Provides a draft so the smoke goes up and not down.
Are you talking about the Smoke Deflectors? Those are used to push the smoke away from the cab at highspeed. They are sometimes refereed to as "Elephant Ears". Much of the FEF Class had these Smoke Deflectors including the only other persevered FEF-3 No. 838. However they have been given to 844 since then. 838 is mainly used for spare parts.
Donatello, as many told you, these are SmokeDeflectors. The moving air by driving will be guided along the boiler and a little upwards, which prevents smoke and especially steam to get down aside of the boiler and flooding the cab. So on high speed, the signals stay visible - which is important. Some engines were very prone, some engines very not, so not all engines got those deflectors. You have large defelctors and small deflectors. In Germany we differ betwan big ones, called "Wagner" and small ones, called "Witte" deflectors, but there are also other deflectors, like very small ones beside the chimney. In cold winter this problem is awefull, because smoke isn't the problem - as a good fireman ensures the engine NOT to smoke, because smoke is wasting fuel - so here steam which is the major amout what comes out of the stack, will quickly accumulate in the cold air as white dense clouds and will whirl over the boiler down into the cab, making the seight of the fottplate staff nearly impossible... so hjere the deflectors generate an air stream, which prevents this, leading the steam up and above the cab roof, where it now can spread out, whitout being a disturbance to the footplate staff
It's awesome to have the old girl give a flawless performance after her rebuild.

Superb master piece of extreme engineering who attain quick acceleration in few seconds and can haul unbelievable load
Speed based on two periods between 8:00 and 10:30, (using driver revolutions counted at 1/4 speed), 57.1 to 57.2 mph.

Follow up question: When the UP 844 is doing 60 mph, how much of the work load is being done by the UP1989 Diesel / Heritage Locomotive? 😎
@@trainroomgary it’s trailing just in case 844 breaks down.
You have very high quality videos, and I thank you for these. Look forward to seeing all have posted. Thank you.
Such a beautiful machine. Just watching the drivers is a wonderious sight.
I could watch this all day!

Skip has paced this locomotive many times, and none of his videos disappoint! :)

Mighty fine sight there! I'm so glad to see the 844 on the high iron again!
Great job of chasing it!!! The sounds is particularly great.

Thanks for sharing this Great H/D Video. You keep on out-doing-your-self.
I was going 80 MPH just to keep pace with the 844

Amazing Video! She looks so beautiful going fast!
I wonder if the worked on the oil injection system in prep for doing the conversion on the big boy. 844 seems to be maintaining a really clean stack compared to the past.
I believe they're debating over that because none of the big boys were oil fired if they do go for it that's a big thing in steam engine history
+Terminator X the big boy here in Denver was converted to run on oil, though it wasn't very successful.
theshapeexists i guess the oil was bad
+Terminator X lol, apparently when it was converted, the fire couldn't be stoked evenly to build up adequate steam pressure and was converted back to coal. but the big boy they are restoring now has way more technology than available when it was retired in '62
theshapeexists so it has a computer, free WIFI, and GPS
You 844 whistle drew me to ogden union station tw0 years. Ago i met ya
FANTASTIC !
the footage is spot on as always.
Yea, it is even though it's a piece of film being run over and over
Great Skip, just great!
She seems to burn alot cleaner now! Whistle also sounds a bit different to me.
Could you tell me what the 2 cars right behind 844, what do they carry for it, and that flag that is attached to the front of it, have see that before but just cant remember which one it is, can you tell me please?

thank you so very much, and what were the flags on the front of the train????
I think the flag with the red "C" is the flag of the state of Colorado.
Yep your right, so guessing that 844 was Coming from somwhere in Colorado when this was filmed or is it there right now????
July 24,2016 it went from Denver, back home to Cheyenne. Till next year probably as they have 3 years to do the same type of rebuild to the 4014 Big Boy
Awesome Machine, she's definitely booking down the track....
Awesome chase video. Thanks for sharing :-)

how fast was she clocking in at? 65-70?
We'll it was over over taking traffic on the road so probably around 60
If it was a highway she was next to, then over 60. If it was an interstate, probably over 70. Maybe even close to 80.
+Steamtrainz this engine could do 110 in its days
I wonder how fast they will let 844 go now that the rebuild is finished, and everything is like new again?
what is the fastest they run the engine these days, and in the past before the new rules that come into play in the 1990's, and does a hard run make her hotter or is that just coal fired engines like 1225 and 765, I know it was said when you ran them fast they get more effecent and the cutoff can be used to make it perform and really use that steam they run off the expanding nature.
Majestic!!!!!
I loveyour whistle yup
Great footage! How fast was she going, and is there the possibility that it can be recorded and uploaded to 60 fps? Thanks!
she sounds awesome
Still one of my favorite locomotives, but I miss the MARS light. She looks kind of naked without it (my opinion)
guess it helps if you know the area and have a good driver
844 had a different whistle for a couple of years recently. Right Skip?
Can anyone explain to me what those big blinders on the front of the engine are for? Are they to prevent the wind from buffetting the engineer, or is it something to do with how they want the headlight to not leak light off to the sides?
Smoke Deflectors, or elephant ears. The 800's were prone to having the smoke floating down towards the cab, so The UP put them on. Provides a draft so the smoke goes up and not down.
Okay. I saw in a documentary that the Big Boy got around this problem with a modified smokestack that changed the angle at which the smoke came out.
Tbh it looks cool with them

Terrific video. You and your driver did a great job. Was the 844 at top speed or was there more in the tank?
Hey curious question , but how long was the #844's rebuilt?
Looks much better without the red Mars light on front.
You have to be an absolute Philistine to give this clip a thumbs down!
Ironically the video repeats itself at 8:44 back to 4:00 until 13:43.
Hello to 844 come to utah soo again union station ogden show yourself off again 844 my favorite ghostly whistle
Isn't it burning oil?
Are they not going to put the Mars light back on?
Engines these days don't need them
most I know is the bolts holding it in place failed. Thought they'd put it back on in the overhaul.
oil didnt set off so many fires as coal sparks did.... not too expensive.....
WHEN THE 844 GET'S UP SHERMAN HILL THEN IT'S THE HOME STRACH
the flag is Colorado state flag, the cars should be oil and water
She probably runs better now than the day she came out of Alco.
“1.000”
speed up the video
1.000
1st
Big deal?
british steam is so much better
