  • Tour of Union Pacifc Roundhouse and Yard Storage during Cheyenne Depot Days 2018. Not much has changed in the roundhouse since 2017, except locomotives have been shuffled around. 6936 still resides in the same stall as last year. Strung about between the stalls lies parts to Big Boy 4014. Stuff stored out in the yard between the Roundhouse and Steam Shop looks like it has not moved at all since Depot Days 2017.
    Video shot with Galaxy 9 Plus in 4K 60FPS mounted to Zhiyun Smooth 4 gimbal stabilizer. Video has been rendered down to 2K ( 1440p) so make sure to set your quality setting in the player to 1440p if not already selected by clicking on the gear icon.

    Looks like you were there on the Sunday. I was there on the Saturday when the weather wasn’t nearly as pleasant. But, having made the trip all the way from Australia for this event, I wasn’t going to let a freezing cold, wet miserable day (certainly by Sydney standards) get in the way. Seeing all these iconic UP locomotives up close was a childhood dream come true for me. Hope to make it back again soon to see 4014 in steam rather than in pieces. Thanks for posting this video. DD40X 6600 horsepower two 645 V-16 E3 engines on a common under frame, E-9 last built in the early 60's two V-12 567D engines 2400 total horsepower, Challenger 4-6-6-4 3985 soft coal burning originally now burns bio diesel or diesel fuel, 6500 horsepower and finally the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 originally soft coal burning now burns oil exactly like the challenger, 7000 horsepower one of 25 locomotives built and the only one of 8 remaining to be rebuilt to service. The other big boys will remain static displays.
    When I ran Amtrak trains in the mid 70's we had two ex UP E-9's that were regular power on the Montrealer from New Haven, Connecticut to Montreal, Canada equipped with two 645 engines and the electrical systems were completely rebuilt by the UP still equipped with two ok 2225 steam generators. They were in far batter condition then the other E-8's and a Few E-7's we had.
    Geared for 117 mph they were great locomotives, approaching Hartford, Ct. One morning had an alarm bell sound off, I went back to see what was wrong and found three of the 4 engines dead, out of fuel. I immediately killed both steam generators then hightailed it to the cab to tell the engineer we had to stop and run for fuel with the engines or we were going to run out. Where he asked? Hartford tower I replied and back through the tunnel into the freight yard then the fuel pad. The last engine died just as we rolled onto the fuel pad at 10 mph. After fueling and refilling both engines with water went back onto the main and went back to our train hooked up turned the steam back on and when we stopped at Hartford station the car department was there with number 50 size propane burners to thaw out the ice from the condensate drains. Having 18 cars it took close to an hour before heat was restored to the entire train. We found out several days later the Central Vermont railroad failed to fuel and water her the night she ran out. We normally arrived at New Haven around 5 AM, that morning we didn't get to New Haven till after 10 AM.
    It was an interesting and cold night ( -5 below zero ) and the E units heat the cab with steam from the steam heat line. Seeing as the UP now uses 480 volt 3 phase electricity to supply heat light and air conditioning to the train I suspect cab heat is now provided from the low voltage system on the locomotive.

I had seen a video of these units being towed in a Union Pacific freight not long after C&NW became part of Union Pacific. Some were scrapped, I think. What a shame. They should've kept them all. They announced it was retired late last year. When they finally had a chance to get a good look at it, they discovered it was in worse shape than 4014 (before its restoration). Deferred maintenance will do that to any piece of equipment. They also discovered improper boiler patches made with unapproved material. • @NicksCollectableCreations
      @NicksCollectableCreations  3 года назад

      I have no idea. It has been removed from the roster of locomotives for the heritage fleet. Eds official statement when asked was that 3985 was undergoing it's government mandated boiler inspection but none of my tours of the roundhouse did it ever appear to be in a state of inspection. I go back to 2012 on this channel of touring the steam shop and roundhouse and you can see it is in the same state every year. Looks like dead storage to me. People don't like when I say that and tell me I don't know anything. But then after the Big Boy was put into service, 3985 was removed from the roster and it's tender used for the Big Boy so... I've read over the years before Big Boy was announced or rumored that Ed has stated to people he didn't like 3985 and it would never run again under his management of the program. Whatever the reason is, he stated during the rebuilding of Big Boy that 3985 was slated to undergo a similar rebuild after Big Boy, but that has not happened to my knowledge. Sadly it does not look like they will be opening the 2 buildings to the public this year either so I can't get a look at the state of things.

  • @pikachuthegayatheist6215
    @pikachuthegayatheist6215 3 года назад

    This is why I rather than Museum make the video not the tourist, because the tourist focuses too much on random things without giving any detail, because they can't, while spending as much time filming to keep it as a memory not actually as a documentation. The museum on the other hand has to document everything and keep it short to 10 or 15 minutes, which means that only the most important highlights are going to be talked about, it also means you're not going to get the person use filming focusing on single random areas or focusing on the same area for longer than 15 seconds.
    This is the problem with somebody's vacation video that they filmed at the Museum, then uploaded on RUclips and then upload. On RUclips nobody cares about that shit. They'd rather see the actual videos by the museum then by people walking through it, however the same cannot be said when somebody is riding one of these trains and filming it.

      It’s a tour video. Of course you won’t see anything in action.

      That has been my question for a few years now, along with the E units. I'm suspecting not but would love to be wrong

      Yes, as is the E. They are not equipped with PTC yet so they have just been mothballed. Nothing major wrong with them. But once time and money permits they will be equipped, tested and back on the rails. Without PTC they cant lead a train.
