  • Back in 2012 he WP RXR museum in Portola put together a museum train for Dunsmuir's upcoming railroad days, with the DD40X on the point followed by SP heritage unit UP 1996 and GP20 WP 2001. This was a fun train to chase, not a million people to deal with and damp gloomy skies in Portola turned to sunny skies in Oroville. Fun day!

Can’t imagine what the crew on the BNSF was thinking as soon as they saw that massive DDA40X

Still love the classic paint of the SP unit with tribute to the steam engine it's profiled after.
And that DD40AX is a beast of an engine(s).

crazy how large it is. You wouldnt think so by just looking at it alone but sitting next to a SD70 at 20:00 you clearly see that its maybe 30% larger

Yeap and they were going to scrap it but the public dictated otherwise. People didn't want to see it go. So they repaired it, made some safety modifications and put it back out. But since 2017 I don't think it's moved out of the round house. But at least it's safe from the elements.
