  • Taken from our 2015 release "Through the Oregon Cascades Part 1," follow UP trains as they depart Oregon's scenic Willamette Valley at Eugene, and enter the foothills of the Cascade Range.
The Cascade Mountains of western Oregon are thick with tall timber growing along steep slopes broken by waterfalls and streams. This is the setting for a mountain railroad that climbs from deep within the Willamette Valley to nearly 5,000 feet above sea level at Cascade Summit.
Part 1: The Long Grade, begins at Eugene Yard and heads railroad south into the foothills of the Cascades. A forty mile 1.8% grade between Oakridge and Cascade Summit puts UP’s newest locomotives to the test and keeps train crews on their toes. The line wraps around horse shoe curves, crosses trestles, and disappears through numerous rock sheds and tunnels before reaching the top of the pass.

Just found this channel. Subscribed!! My Dad worked that line from 1946-1986. We we’re living in Klamath Falls. He use to bring home beautiful Christmas trees on the Caboose from sidings up on the mountain ❤ we lived next to the tracks off the highway and went he would go out and come in we would wave the railroad lantern he had at home, and he would wave his. Great childhood memories 🥰

"DO'OH!!" The video ended right at the part that I was waiting for!
In 2018, I camped at O'dell Lake for the first time. In the middle of the night, I was awakened by the sound of a train horn. I didn't know that there were tracks nearby.
It's amazing how the forested mountains can make a train horn sound like a perfectly tuned symphony!🎵
These videos from 7idea Productions are of documentary quality, and I can't wait for part 2!! I ❤ the Cascades!😁👍

@@7ideaproductions I also meant to say how much I love seeing the rail grinder. You’re right, it looks like something out of an apocalyptic future.
I was sound asleep on the Empire Builder one night and woke up to strange sounds, and bright light bleeding in around the curtains of my roommette. Half asleep, I pulled the curtain aside to see some kind of train straight out of Hell and it was right next to us.
It was moving slow and it looked like the whole thing was ablaze with sparks and fire and smoke and noise. I didn’t know about rail grinders then and I had no idea what I was looking at. It was a very surreal Dante’s infernoesque sight to see. The next morning it almost seemed like a dream, or maybe a nightmare, lol.
Thank you again for all these videos.

Probably the best railroad video I've ever watched. My dad worked on the SP Signal Gang all over this line in the first 5 years of the 1940s. He bid on the Signal Maintainer job at Glendale on the Siskyou Line in 1946, got it and never left until he retired in 1979. He and my mom lived in an Outfit Car at all of these sidings from Springfield to Cascade Summit and Crescent Lake.

Back in 2001, I was working in a small design studio located in the east end of the Eugene Amtrak station. I got used to all kinds of trains running literally 6-8 feet away. One day, I hear this awful grinding sound coming from the tracks. I look out the window to see that rail grinder slowly passing by in all its flaming, sparking glory. As I'd not known such a contraption existed, I had no idea what I was looking at. Between the fire and smoke, it looked like a train straight out of Hell. lol
Any chance you'll one day cover the Siskiyou Line?

@@johnnyjones2255as I understand it, the Oregon Eastern built the line from Natron to Oakridge in 1912. The plan was to build over the Cascades and on to Ontario in eastern Oregon to meet the UP. This never happened. Later, the SP (being separated from the UP - both had been controlled by EH Harriman) finished the line over the mountains and on to Kirk in 1926. There is a lot more to the story but that is the jest of it.
