    From a UK viewer this is an impressive line up!
    We have generally smaller locomotives here but it would be unheard of to see a rebuild loco on the main line.
    There are specialist companies that move locos between heritage railways.
    Well done UP

    • @commodoresixfour7478
      @commodoresixfour7478 2 года назад +1

      Yeah, it happens often enough here but I wouldn't say its common. My local Steam engine Soo Line 1003 gets on the main line about once a year. This year it made two trips. Once on its home railroad Wisconsin Southern for a photo excursion and the second time down to Chicago on the Metra railroad.

    • @UKHeritageRailways
      @UKHeritageRailways 2 года назад +1

      It's not unheard of in the UK as there are plenty of steam and diesel locomotives that have been restored and are certified for mainline running. There are plenty of tours on the mainline hauled by both.

      But public excursions on class 1 railroads other than UP are now non existent because of Amtrak’s charter ban started March 2018 and liability issues. Class 1’s don’t want the risk anymore of railfan excursions. Too many things can go wrong. NS allowed steam excursions again from Sept. 2011 to spring 2017 because then CEO Charles “Wick” Moorman was a railfan. He wanted steam to run on NS again and they partnered with TVRM then Fort Wayne with 765 and VMT in Roanoke with 611. Cheyenne is the only place in the US that has steam locomotives at a class 1 owned facility.

      Interestingly, UP had 5511 up for sale for YEARS, advertising it as a restorable engine for any tourist line. RRHMA has themselves a priceless piece of railroading history, as she's the last of her kind, the TTT-class (ironically, the Big Boys and Challengers are what replaced her in service on the Wasatch Range in the 1940s, that was originally the route that the "Triple Ts" had been built for 20 some years earlier).

    Up in northern Minnesota there are 3 Yellowstone's (2-8-8-4), all within 35 miles of each other and known for pulling some of the heaviest ore trains ever recorded. As much as I like to see any steam locomotive restored for posterity, it would be gratifying to see one of those Yellowstone's restored to operating condition, especially No.225, which is kept outside exposed to the elements.

      Yes I agree! I am surprised nobody has even talked about restoring a Yellowstone.

      Caje1962 Indeed, that would be great to see one of those restored to operational status.
      Were Yellowstones Mallets? True “compound” articulated engines?
      Also, did UP ever have that class of engine on their roster?

    • @davidstrawn9272
      @davidstrawn9272 Год назад

      @@turkfiles No. Although Yellowstones are Mallets and ran between 40 and 45 mph (though it's not bad, it's just a same speed as the NS steam excursions speed restrictions), but they're simple Articulateds.

    • @Caje-zf8md
      @Caje-zf8md Год назад

      @@turkfiles The DM&IR RR Yellowstone was a "simple" articulated locomotive designed by ALCO and first used on the Northern Pacific railroad in 1928. I am not aware of UP ever using this type of wheel arrangement: UP favored their Challengers (4-6-6-4) and Big Boys (4-8-8-4). My late father used to refer to these giant locomotives as "Mallets", although a true Mallet is a "compound" locomotive.

    Sad to see it go from the UP heritage fleet, but nice to see restoration soon to take place. This could open the doors to a lot of possibilities. I ridden behind the Challenger twice, & the E9's twice. I also was old enough to remember seeing the Centennials in regular service during there second service life. The 6936 is one I wish they would of kept. Glad they did keep the E9's.
